Saints aiming to beat the bookies

Saints have been made second favourites for relegation from the Premier League just weeks after their brilliant promotion to the top flight was confirmed.

Virtually every major bookmaker in the country believes Saints will be one of the three teams to go down next season – even before a ball is kicked or signings completed. Saints and their supporters are unlikely to be too bothered, with an underdog mentality sure to suit Nigel Adkins and his men upon their return to the top flight.

But it may be a slight cause of frustration that Saints and Reading are overwhelming favourites to be relegated, while West Ham, who finished third and only came up via the play-offs, are longer odds to join them back in the Championship.

Reading are generally the favourites for the drop, with bookmakers offering a best priced 11-10 on them going down.

Some bookies have pegged Saints at the same odds, but several others have them slightly wider at 5-4.

Remarkably, West Ham, are only the fifth favourites for the drop at 5-2 while Wigan, who narrowly avoided relegation last season are third favourites at a best priced 2-1.

One of last season’s promoted teams, the much heralded Norwich side who, like Saints, secured back-to-back promotions to get to the Premier League, are fourth favourites at 9-4.

The more optimistic Saints fans might consider the 5000-1 on their team to win the Premier League, or even 11-2 for a top ten finish or 20-1 for a top six finish.

PREMIER LEAGUE RELEGATION ODDS 2012/13

Reading 11-10, Saints 5-4, Wigan 2-1 Norwich 9-4, West Ham 5-2, QPR 9-2, Swansea 9-2, West Brom 5-1, Aston Villa 7-1, Stoke 7-1, Sunderland 10-1, Fulham 12-1.

OTHER SAINTS BETS

Saints to finish in the top ten - 11-2
Saints to finish in the top six - 20-1
Saints to win the Premier League - 5000-1

Unless thay start spending some real money they will be classed as underdogs, the released list is frighteningly short in my opinion, players like Chaplow,Davies and Sneiderlin will look like chumps in the prem.

This is to be expected, every year the promoted clubs are favourites to go down. However in my opinion we are better than a handful of teams already in the Premier League, like Wigan, Norwich, Swansea and QPR. Norwich and Swansea had a fantastic season but I don't think they will find it as easy next year, especially Norwich as can see Paul Lambert going to Liverpool or Villa.

I do not gamble. But I believe there is greater chance of Adam Leitch losing his job at the Echo than Saints going down
.
Echo should stop scare mongering, and start thinking why its circulation keeps going down. Saints are big enough to survive in the top division where they very rightly belong.

Drivel, Davies was voted the best keeper in the Championship last season, better than Rob Green, who is in the England squad. The players you list will do well. Try and engage your brain before posting rubbish or you will look like a chump.

The released list is just players who were out of contract other players may leave but they will be sold on or part of a deal to bring others in you can't just release players who are under contract as they have a contract thats what a contact is for to protect club and player.

This would be the same bookies who at the beginning of last season put us mid table finish at best yet we went on to be top 2 all season. I think we're an unknown quantity which will work in our favour. People don't know much about us other than we're rubbish on TV and play in red and white. With a fully fit squad for the beginning of the season we will be straight out of the gates. I predict witha fit forward line we'll score a shed load of goals and let in quite a few as well. Entertainment value will be high and some of the football will be sublime.

These are very good odds if you want to back Saints next season to stay up. Silly odds really when you look at the club set up and the owners.

At 5000-1 its worth chucking a £1 bet .. what is there to lose?

11-2 for a top ten finish is also a gift bet. There is so little between the clubs outside the top six that Saints could easily achieve this. Got to be worth at least a tenner for the timid.

I would also suggest that a few of your earth pounds on West Ham going straight back down would be a wise investment. That team is flawed, they nearly blew it this season and their squad is not strong. Unless Fat Sam has a big budget he will be getting a "Chairmans statement of full support" very early on in the season and will therefore probably be gone by January.

Isn't guesswork wonderful !!

Im suprised Villa are'nt in the mix to go down. No manager, weak squad & no money. My Three next year are Villa, Swansea & Reading. I am off to the bookes for some of the 11/2 for top ten..... I have full faith that next year will be one of our best ever.

It will be interesting to see how/if the odds move if we sign 5/6 decent players. Goalkeeper,CB,2MF,2 strikers.

I would say with the squad we have, we are bottom 6 but not bottom 3. Our major problem is pace through the centre of the team.

I hope we sign players quicker than we did last year. We can't afford to get off to a slow start and wait until January before we sign strikers. It could be too late.

Reading seem to adding more
wingers to their squad. They already have four.

just a caviat here on how bookies work.. their goal here is to stop vast amounts of money being won on triple bet relegation combinations. Compared to betting on other sports, this is a relatively easy bet to win a lot of money on. A couple of bookies almost went under on relegation triples a couple of years back. So, to prevent this and to balance the risk they issue these early odds set as they know full well that come August , the new odds will relflect more reality and that come christmas ( another time betting on this sort of combo is popular ) a third balancing phase takes place. So when they do their sums then they know whoever goes down they will be quid in for the triples... If you talk to those close to football rather than betting, No-one is saying Saints are probable relegation material, and that before a single dime has been spent. Reading also are not being talked about in that way either... Most pundits seem to think its WBA, swansea and Wigan who are favourites for the drop.

Not a fan of Sam Allardyce, but I think West Ham will do alright next season. They were also in the mix for most of the season, but couldn't quite catch us. We had a great start and then wobbled at the end...shows how important early points are. Hope we get a few good results early and then settle in nicely. Making promoted sides favourite for relegation happens every year. I think we will do better than a few sides including QPR and Wigan. It's important that the team get used to losing games and rise above it...next season will be very different from last three, but am sure we will be ok.
Adkins hoped for some early signings and not try and get players in January, but I am not expecting the activity that some fans seem to be.

spot on. I still think there will be only three new signings straight in and maybe player+cash deal. So nailing by colours to the mast We will sign a keeper, a centre half and a holding midfield player directly in, and we will buy a right winger with cash+player...perhap

The Echo may be doing us a favour by producing this story. What better motivation for the squad to prove the every one wrong. Agree with George we need 6 additions to the squad I would argue that we need pace on the flanks as well and as I have said many times all ready a quick box to box attacking Central midfielder who can score goals, Joe Ledley or Steven Davies would be the sort of players we should go for. The little fella is talking a load of tosh when he thinks Morgan and Chappers are not good enough. Morgan has got better of the last three seasons and was one of the best midfielders in the division last season. Saints played their best football last season when both players were in the side. Morgan is a future French international. I still think Barnard, Seabourne , Forte, Forcaste and Dickson are on their way out and Hammond and Puncheon will follow. I think to two goal keepers we should look at are both Scoland keepers Alan Mcgregor at Rangers and Matt Gilks at Blackpool. We also were looking at a Dutch keeper. I understand Nigel was at Wembley on Saturday, I wonder who has caught his eye. Read this morning that Reading are interested in Matt Philips.
Being a good Methodist I don't gamble but a believe with some divine guidance we will finish around at mid table next season.

At the start of last season the 3 teams promoted to Premier League were all favourites for the drop, with all the leading bookmakers. Barcelona were favourite to win the Champions League, Man U favourite for Premier League title, Birmingham, West Ham were favourites for automatic promotion to the Premier League and Leicester were favourite to take the 3rd spot.

We didn't get a mention in the Championship title race betting nor did we get a mention in the automatic promotion betting odds.

My response to this article is a simple one ''Argh the wonderful bookmakers WTF do they know''`

I haven't seen anyone yet mention anyone that takes us up to Premiership standard. Its dubious as to whether these players are better than our first eleven. I really hope NA has more vision than most fans on here that keep naming championship standard players.
We need players that have proven themselves in top flight football.
Lambert is looking to leave Norwich, because they have little money to strengthen.
West Ham are still quite heavily in debt.
As for Seabourne our best form of the season was when he was playing. When he got injured followed by Chaplow we won 1 out of 10. I think he deserves this season to see if he can get back.
Chaplow will be a good squad player, despite appearing injury prone. KD deserves his chance not only for loyalty but for over all standard of performance.
Spider will be cool.
What we need is pace and top level experience. We need 3/4 players who will step this team up a level.
QPR, Stoke, Norwich, to go, if we get three or four players of proven class. Stoke have a lot of players coming to the end of their careers.

Will you start booing if your 'demands' aren't met?

When the pressure is not on and there are not games to WIN - Saints fans sometimes out of boredom and fruustration turn on each other ...

I'm not going to do that !!

SAINTS are undergoing a revolution ...

You can only applaud the Squad the Players - the Stars like RICKIE and ADAM ...

Nicola and Nigel have been awesome as a Team - long may it continue !!!

As we stepped up to the Championship - there were posts of concern about our placing - and what we accept - whether we would be flooded out at St Mary's by Away Fans like leeds or be intimidated by millwall or wet spam.

IMO - we passed all the tests last Season - albeit there was a bit of frustration having travelled to Boro Away to see us lose our lead to a deflection and Jose going for the man instead of the ball ...

SAINTS FANS LOVE TO WIN.

You ask for 100% commitment and there is not argument with that. I respect that point of view.

If Saints are in the bottom three next Season - I won't need to boo :O) or do anything

IMO Lots of fans will be calling for Nigel's head.

NOW IS THE TIME TO STRENGTHEN THE SQUAD. THERE IS MONEY.

Many Managers would like to be in Nigel's position - Money and Support from the Chairman and success with the double promotion.

LET'S BE AMBITIOUS AND TOGETHER AS ONE FIGHT FOR EUROPEAN FOOTBALL.

The Daily Echo are also guilty IMO of selling THE MIGHTY SAINTS as some second rate football club on the AOC issue.

They would not let it off the back pages until AOC was sold and now we've all got to kowtow to ars*nil and welcome alex back and all say how well he has done to go to a bigger club.

WE ARE IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS ars*nil AND WE AIM TO SMASH THEM WHEN WE PLAY THEM.

At the start of last season the 3 teams promoted to Premier League were all favourites for the drop, with all the leading bookmakers. We didn't get a mention in the Championship title race betting nor did we get a mention in the automatic promotion betting odds.

My response to this article is a simple one ''Argh the wonderful bookmakers WTF do they know''`

just a caviat here on how bookies work.. their goal here is to stop vast amounts of money being won on triple bet relegation combinations.
How on earth is that going to stop people betting on combinations!? lol

It will take a brave person to make those kind of bets a week after the last season has finished anyway.

The bookies are going on where the money is going. So at the moment a lot of people seem to be betting against saints. Fair enough, they probs still see us as that small team who used to struggle in the lower half of the prem...

Also I don't think any respectable pundit would be making such rash judgements. Show me a quote from someone with good football knowledge, I dare you!
"Southampton will finish at least second in their first season back in the Premiership. That's an absolute banker. They are completely brilliant and with a little strengthening they could easily win it." - Gary Neville, Sky Sports 20 May 2012

"If Southampton don't make the top two next season I'll put peanut butter on my willy and a ferret down my pants live on Match of the Day." - Alan Hansen BBC 15 May 2012

"The team everyone in the Prem is fearing next season is Southampton. If they aren't six points clear at the top by Christmas, I'll eat a bag of hornets." - Lee Dixon, BBC Radio 5 Live, 14 May 2012

"If Confucious says Saints will finish runners up, that's good enough for me. The guy's an absolute genius." - Jamie Redknapp, Sky Sports News, 12.05pm today

Those of you knocking this thread by Adam Lietch have obviously not read his article in the Echo he ridicules the bookies odds and is writing in a very positive mode.

I agree with what Milton Road posted earlier on, 3/4 players to move us up another level, as for people posting advising? english goalkeepers, this country have not produced a decent goalkeeper since David Seaman and he was not that clever, ok the ball being that much lighter hence the bending and swerving confuses the keeper but there is not one English keeper that is worthy of playing for his country and as for calling for championship players we already have a whole squad of them only time will tell who will step up to the plate those that don't will be replaced with better players.

what were Saints odds for Automatic promotion for the last two seasons, the odds will surely change the nearer to the start of the season

I certainly don't 'demand' a top ten finish.
Well said Sainty, this guy's a tool
RedArmy's our sergeant major and his valued role is never to be reasonable and never to be quiet. It's okay for you cerebral types, but the rest of us - especially the drunks like Wobblycat and the idiots like me - need a good kick up the @rse on a regular basis. RedArmy retired himself for a week or so a while back and was called back urgently by very popular demand before we became a complete shambles. Even my Auntie Elspeth, who scares everybody, says RedArmy is the only one on here who isn't a silly rag, tag or bobtail.

There's lot's of arguing on here all the time, but the one thing we all agree on is "The higher they get, the fewer."

There's only one RedArmy and they don't get fewer than that.

Saints belong somewhere between the Premier League and the Championship, along with a number of other clubs, who struggle at the top level.

Have they invented a new league?
I'm confused.

If you look at the Premier league this year you will see it splits into 5 divisions. Saints will be in division 4 with aspirations to move into division 3. It has been like this since about year 4 when the brands of the major clubs became globalised. Since then the influx of foreign money, I include Saints in this, has further defined the divisions within the league. With the investment we have had and assuming we improve the squad by 5/6 players we can establish ourselves in division 4/3 next season. I don't see us as a no man's land club.

Unless thay start spending some real money they will be classed as underdogs, the released list is frighteningly short in my opinion, players like Chaplow,Davies and Sneiderlin will look like chumps in the prem.
Sorry, you are so wrong.

One thing you are forgetting is these players would never be included on the released or retained list as they are under contract. Only out of contract players are listed on the list.

However, I do feel that the experience of Chaplow and the ability of the young schneiderlin will be a good asset in the Premier League. I also can't believe you have listed Davis on your list.

Sorry, but I don't believe Saints will spend sill money. But they will strenthen and I think we have the spine of a good team.

If my memory serves me correctly, we were odds-on to go straight down last time we were promoted to the top flight, not only with the bookies but also with the pundits. Instead, with a great manager and indomitable team spirit we retained our place in the top flight, and stayed for for 27 years. Just as then, we have a manager, as yet unproven at the top level, but whose track record inspires confidence, a team if anything with greater cohesion and spirit, and an astute chairman (or CEO or whatever) with more solid financial backing. I believe we can be quietly confident of not only staying in the PL, but of making progress in it.

Top ten is worth a few quid bet surely, but i reckon survival is all we need this season and build from there

Money cannot buy that and that is why we will survive our first season back in the EPL.
I might have said this A4 but Football's not played on paper, and today's news is tomorrow's chip paper, and you have to keep moving or you will be stationery. Alas, we all have reams but generally they're not worth the paper they're written on, you can watermark my words on that, so take a leaf from my book and take note.
