Saints wait for J-Rod to jet in

Daily Echo: Jay Rodriguez Jay Rodriguez

SAINTS are hoping to complete the signing of Jay Rodriguez when the Burnley striker returns from holiday in Mexico.

A deal, thought to be worth about £7m, has been agreed between the clubs for the 22-year-old, who is due back in England next week.

The fee would smash Saints’ previous transfer record of £4m, which they paid for Rory Delap in 2001.

Rodriguez’s representatives are understood to be discussing personal terms with Saints in his absence, with the hope being that the player will be able to undergo a medical and finalise a switch immediately on his return.

Some reports yesterday suggested that midfielder Richard Chaplow was being used as a makeweight in the move.

However, it is thought that the Rodriguez transfer is simply a straight cash deal and there are no plans for Chaplow to leave St Mary’s at the moment.

The 27-year-old has also clearly stated his desire to remain at the club.

Writing on his Twitter page, Chaplow – who started his career at Turf Moor – said: “A lot of RUMOURS flying around on my future, I am still a saints player and it's somewhere I want to stay 4 a long time!”

has been chased by a number of clubs since breaking spectacularly into the first team at Turf Moor.

But the forward has not wanted to leave his boyhood side unless it is for Premier League football.

Rodriguez is understood to be impressed by the ambition shown by Saints, who won promotion back into the top flight last season.

And, while terms are still to be agreed, it appears as though that could be a cruc i a l aspect i n persuading him to leave his home town.

Saints attempted to sign Rodriguez last year, but were met with unwavering resistance from Burnley, while the player himself indicated he was not ready to move at that time.

However, with just one season left to run on his contract, the Clarets have been resigned to cashing in on him this summer.

The Championship side had valued the player at £8m, but the soundings have always been that they would be prepared to accept something in excess of £6m.

Rodriguez, who has one England Under-21 cap to his name, scored 21 goals last season. The year before that, in what was effectively his first full campaign, he bagged 15.

Should he move to Saints, he will be reunited with former teammate Danny Fox, with the left back having joined from Burnley last summer.

Rodriguez also played with midfielder Jack Cork, when he was on loan at Turf Moor in 2010/11.

Think Chaplow will stay as a squad player. Only question is, his continual injuries.

i still think we needed a player with premiership experience, but he is a player the premiership defenders know nothing about so that is a positive i suppose, but 7 mil is a lot of money, bit of a gamble really. The next position is an attacking midfielder please NA and NC.

J-Rod is Burnley born and bred which is probably why he didn't sign for us or anyone else last year, because don't forget we were a Championship club just like Burnley, there is nothing wrong with being loyal especially when your being loyal to a club you love. And before we start debating his price tag lets see if he actually signs on the dotted line and if he does the business in a Saints shirt.

£7million Premiership quality, not many of those about, which is why we've signed a very promising youngster....and he's English. Of course he unproven, but watch his stock go up if we have a good, sorry when we have a good season, and do we really want to buy failed "Premiership" quality players, Yak and Reo-cocker, and even Michael Owen being mentioned, big ego's, and even bigger wages, not for me thanks chaps.

This falls in line with NC wanting a younger squad.
Saints have had him watched for over a year. So they are confident he will do the business.
I would not be surprised to see a player exchange, maybe Barny and Punch. With, Bill,Rick, Lee, Guly and Jay if he comes, in front of him seemingly. It would seem sadly Barny is on the surplus list, but who knows.

Odd then that 4 or 5 other premier teams are after him, we should be pleased that we are seen in first place, and as St Retford said "was it his choice" last season, as for other potential signings we know the Don does his business behind closed door's so I don't see this going through

I hope Chaplow stays. He is premiership quality and fits the "Southampton style" that we are establishing.

Since Adkins' arrival, Saints have given him his first chance to build a team with some money behind him. His approach appears sound to me so far.

This all bodes well in my opinion.

Fingers crossed for Ince as well, although I suspect that may be rumour mongering. We shall see.

Now come on NA and NC, beef up the midfield, defence and between the stix, before everyone does!

I seem to remember that Billy Sharpe didn't want to sign for us last year as he was holding out for a move to a Premiership club. Comments on this forum then seemed to be that if he didn't want to come at that time then we would want him at any time in the future, but he did sign. Plus he scored plenty of goals for Donny but initially could get a kick here. NA and NC knew what they were doing then as they knew when he signed he wasn't Saints-fit but they started down that path and we all saw the result, with more to come I think. I expect the same thing with J-Rod. NA and NC can see the potential not a finished product, so J-Rod is a work in progress.

100% agree! 7mil for a player that hasn't been on form and is in the last year of his contract seems a lot! Is he better than what we've got upfront??

I'm not excited with this signing at all. I'd prefer an unknown foreigner worth half the money! We could get a crackin defender for 7 mil or even a midfielder. I'm worried we can't attract 1st class players!

Burnley fans rate J Rod very highly (much like we rate Lallana)
but few of us have seen him play, so if our managerial team at SMS are paying this much for him then he must be worth it.

I rather have a young hungry player with something to prove than a washed up premier league has been.

Get the shopping done early Nigel, no last minute panic buys.

it's interesting reading Gaz1976's posts as you'd almost think they never say anything positive about the club. J-Rod could be a great signing and as others have said i'd rather have a hungry 22 year old than a 32 year old money grabbing player like I suspect someone like Yakubu would be. And with j-rod how do we know he's only a championship player- could you not argue that Ricky, Billy et al are just championship players but that they have earnt a right to play at a higher level so although 7m does seem over the odds give the guy a go. Could recoup some money by selling Barnard, Guly, Dickson, Puncheon to name just 4

My lad was mascot for the Coventry game and we watched it again the other night. I made the point of watching Guly. Try it. He was outstanding.
IMO, Guly and the mascot (your lad) were joint men of the match.

Why do people pre judge? The same people who now rave about Jos are probably the same ones who said he was rubbish when he joined, 'why sign a Celtic reserve centre half?' If NA and Cortese believe JRod is the man for us then I am prepapred to accept that. The great thing about football is we all have opinions, that said if our opinions were any good we would be the one on the touchline at St.Mary's on a saturday instead of Nigel.
As for Guly he is Marmite, love him or hate him. I love him, double figure in goals and assists last season. He does not run around like a headless chicken, but he tracks back and covers far more than most people realise. I would guess that most people who reckon Chaplow in Premiership class would not rate Guly. To me Chaplow is a hard working all action player, but the final ball is too often wayward. If Jrod signs we will have attacking options, football is now a 14 man game so to have firepower on the bench is vital. Now we need a centre half, at least one fullback and a central midfield player. For the centre half and midfielder I would prefer to go for some experience, either premiership or international.

JayRod should be a good addition, even at £7 million. He scored 21 goals for Burnley last season and we can expect more from him once he is brought up to full fitness by Saints' rigorous training programme (not to mention being surrounded by better players).

Remember that Billy wasn't deemed fit enough to make the starting line-up when he joined from Donny.

And Rickie's fitness is hugely improved since his Brizzle Rovers days.

Onwards and upwards.

Clearly some disagreement on here about this prospective signing, but my view on the matter is crystal clear.

If Jay flops then gambling this extortionate amount of money on a non Prem player is a disgrace and a slap in the face for fans struggling to meet the new higher rip-off ticket prices. Adkins and Cortese should apologise and depart.

If Jay is a roaring success, then this wise investment in a budding talent, before he matures and becomes completely unaffordable, should be applauded - and Saints ticket prices hailed as the greatest bargain in world football.

I can't believe some of these comments. How can you say Jay Rod hasn't been on form? He scored 21 goals in a very average Burnley team. People saying he wasn't special against us, well maybe it's because we are a very good team and stopped them from playing to their front men. He's only 22, so much potential from this guy, also why is it that 5/6 Prem teams are also after him? This guy is young and hungry eager to prove himself, why would we want journey men like Yakubu/Reo-Coker who are only in it for money. Not to mention J.Rod has played with Cork/Fox so he should settle in fairly quickly.

Also here's a comparison, Powell from Crewe (League 2) could be sold for 5m, I know who I would want if I had the choice.

No doubt it's a lot of money but quiet frankly he is 100% worth it and I fully expect him to be worth more than that as the years go by.

Why are people complaining about this signing?
Admittedly hes not a big name signing. But shouldn't we be happy that Adkins is adding to the squad with players who can score goals.
N.A has not lead us wrong yet. Some saints fans should have more faith in him.
The guy is Only 22, playing for England U21's.
For all we know who could be the next best thing with a bit of training. Some fans need to Have more Faith in the club.

You're right we can't attract established 1st class players. We know we are good enough to stay up but why should all these "1st class players" that we should be buying think that? The bookies have us second favourites for the drop. We aren't the big boys in this league. In league 1 we bought the best striker in the league because we could. The equivalent in this league is RVP! We need players who want and need to prove themselves at the top level and that NA and NC think can do it and do it in the Southampton way. IF we buy Rodriguez then it will be because they think he is right. I trust them.

Worrying news today (yes - it really is true in this mad world!) that an All Party Parliamentary Committee has called upon the government to make calling someone fat a 'hate crime' on a par with racism, homophobia etc. This throws into doubt our plans for a Jumbly Stand and would certainly turn most occupants of the Northam into criminals if they persist with their 'Whooaaa - you fat b@stard' goal kick chants.

Some creativity will now be required and I am checking the legal efficacy of the term 'Fat Pride Stand'.

A rolling of the eyes from here, too.

Out of interest, how accurate is this £7m figure? Oh, and what % of the transfer budget does it represent?

I guess, like me, no one can answer either question with any degree of certainty.

I'm a 'not sure' above, but that's on the basis that I've hardly seen him play. I would have been a 'not sure' for all of the following ...... Rickie, Billy, Tad, Spiderman, Jos ...... stop now, the list is too long.

Welcome, Jay; one more piece of the jigsaw.

hmm no i know nothing . just saying the team that have done the job of getting us up there should be given their chance ( which i have been to st marys watching in the lower divisions unlike others who have come out the woodwork all of a sudden) why spend 7 mill on another champ player who didnt want to know same as some fans only interested now were back in the prem
He was loyal to his boyhood local club, but he is also ambitious. I see nothing wrong in him deciding to stay and carry on his progression last season.

To be honest, 7 million for a quality young striker is good business, especially for an English player.

I enjoyed our time in the lower leagues, but we are dealing in a different world now, I for one am delighted!!

Also, whilst I have stuck with Saints through thick and thin I welcome all fans to the club, regardless. The only way our great club will improve and grow in stature is by new fans joining the journey. Fine, if you want us to remain a low budget struggling club with 18000 fans, all well and good. I personally would like to see as many new fans as possible and eventually it would be great to develop the stadium or even build a new one (as NC has already stated).

I want to see the kids along the South wearing Southampton tops and not Man Utd or Man City. This is the vision we should all have for our club. So, all fans are welcome.

Regarding Chaplow, I agree his passing isn't what it should be, but IMO he could be what we need in central midfield.
He is the only midfielder we have who consistently gets ahead of the forwards.
That movement will be priceless in the Prem, because it will unsettle defences and help create space for Ricky, Sharp, Chun etc. Without midfielders disrupting and distracting the defence, with their runs from deep, the opposing centre backs will just be able to man mark the strikers out of the game.
He would also give the team energy in the centre of the park, chasing the ball down, before giving it to the players who can pass it well.

The way of thinking about it is this: Lee gets injured for 2-3 games at the same time as Rickie. We're then left with a dilema of only having one game plan with Guly and Sharp up front. For the prem this isn't good enough and why teams get relegated.
.
Also it's worth taking suspensions into acount. Losing key players a game here and there costs points. I know we got results when Rickie was suspended but if that happened in the prem it would be different. JR is a good player and I think he'll have to bide his time to break into the squad because I think Rickie, sharp and Lee will be ahead of him. Also remember we'll have domestic cup games to play where we want to rest players. I think to have an exciting team with 5 strikers is a must. Taking players off with 20 mins to go and replacing them with equal players is a must. Keeping suspensions down is a must. The teams who fail to spark in the prem are ones with a good starting 11 but not 15.

The teams who fail to spark in the prem are ones with a good starting 11 but not 15. dopplershift

Completely agree, Only just last week people where saying that N.C Was going to sell the club ... now he's investing real money. This shows he means business. and he wants to go up the prem and fast.

All the fans complaining about this signing ... its quite preposterous, If this lad turns out to be the next best thing you'll all be saying, ' i always thought he would be a great player ''

Man up and be a true fan. have Faith in NA AND NC there in it for the win. The lad has shown he has talent in the Championship.

People always said Sir Ricky would never hack it in the championship ... Look what happened. i Think i saw one football pundit put saints to finish at best 6th last year, every other football pundit said below. N.A knows what he is doing.

Trust the man.

If Jay is coming to Saints? I am concerned that our strikers are all in the role as second striker alongside Ricky. Guly Lee, and Sharp all played well as the second striker.
I do not think Barny is Premier class. Thus he will be on his way out. I do think we need a good understudy who could step in for Ricky. Prehaps Holt could be that person.
I really doubt whether we will pay 7 Million for Jay with only one year left on his contract.
The fee will never be disclosed, as that is Saints policy these days. Prehaps it is a ploy to warn off the likes of Celtic, Everton, Newcastle and Wigan who are all after Jay. Celtic don't have 7 million to spend on Jay. They would have to sell Hooper to finance the deal.

Nicola and Nigel already identified their targets the week before the Coventry game. I wonder if a few deals have already been done and dusted and when the Echo least expects it a news conferance will be called and the new signings will be unvailed.

Now that you're going to change your name, can you confirm that the 'Rob the Saint in NZ' line isn't an incitment to anyone in New Zealand to hunt down Dan and steal his Saints' shirt off his back?

It's just a thought because my friend, Pat, who's a regular in the Itchen (which he likes to fondly call 'The Itchen Terrace' - or T!T for short), says he's planning to join the forum and wondered it would be okay if he called himself 'Pat the Saint on the T!T'.

If Jay is a roaring success, then this wise investment in a budding talent, before he matures and becomes completely unaffordable, should be applauded - and Saints ticket prices hailed as the greatest bargain in world football.
Why aren't Arsenal, United and everyone else after him?

7 million is a lot of money to just have a punt they must think he's got potential! Even if some of us don't think so!

100% agree! 7mil for a player that hasn't been on form and is in the last year of his contract seems a lot! Is he better than what we've got upfront?? I'm not excited with this signing at all.
Chappers was two different players last season either side of his injury. Before it he was our best and most important player. After it he was average. If he can get back to his pre-injury form then he'll absolutely smash the Premier League.

Agreed. I think the same was probably true (for a time) with Lallana. For a few matches after his injury, he struggled a bit before finding his feet again and proving his class.

Chappers didn't have the same opportunity and was just getting back to his best at Boro when he picked up another injury.

Agreed. There's nothing more depressing than the sight of kids in Hampshire wearing United tops (well, other than the Eastenders omnibus, obviously). I'd rather they wore Pompey tops than Manure or Chelsea.

But the skunts are a dying breed. We, meanwhile, have a great opportunity to capture a massive, massive fanbase who could be filling out a 60,000 seat stadium every other week by the end of the decade. Nicola and Nigel will build it and they will come.

Buying a striker in Premier League, there are 3 options:
1. Buy a young, proven premiership striker who is approaching his peak .
2. Buy a proven premiership striker who is passed it.
3. Buy a young, unproven striker from Championship, SPL or abroad, who has premiership potential.
Option 1, Saints can't afford the fee and it will blow the wage structure, so its not an option for us.
Option 2, you get premiership experience but with all the baggage that comes with some past their best (attitude, fitness, lack of speed, team spirit etc). For me, this is not the Southampton Way.
Option 3 IS the Southampton Way; someone young, quick and fit with plenty of room to improve. The only doubt is whether the potential can actually be achieved - but isn't that what we NA and his team of coaches and scouts are paid for?

For me, if JR signs it would be a perfect signing.

Can't believe the negative comments on here about this potential transfer; probably from those who think we must blow a fortune on a well known name, just to make a statement .

I agree that some of our players deserve the chance to play in the PL, but there's no room for sentiment in football![/p]
7 million is a lot of money on a player who can easily be stopped by championship defences only 15 league goals , lallana an guly were not far off that amount . i personally think that could be used to bring in a couple of other players who have been in the prem an could be used if SHARP an ricky dont cut it , though am confident in lambert to score at least 15 . fair play youve had a season ticket that long not a dig at you personally , but where were the fans in league 1 funny how a bit of success an their back with knickers round their ankles gaz1976

Anthony Pulis was "value" and a few hundred grand but 3 or four players like him and you are looking at 1 Jay Rod

NC is not one to waste money and knows a good investment. £1 million for a late 20's League One striker. Money wasted?? Lambert I think his name was and unproven!! £7million for a young striker with record in Championship can't be bad. Next season he will have a proven track record in the Prem with Lambert and Sharp. Who wants old Prem strikers? Defoe and Yakubu scored hardly any goals last season and would demand huge wages.

Fickle lot, young fans. My fear is that, WHEN we're the top dogs and you can buy the brand that will be SFC in just about every shopping centre in the world, will everyone despise us as much as we despise the top teams now?

Watching a few highlights isn't going to give you a great insight into someone. And he's completely different to what we have, Lambert is our focal point of attack but he can play a bit like Sheringham in the way he links things up. Sharp is a predator, Guly is an anomoloy, and Jay Rod is a player that can link things up, or go past people with pace and skill, what you might call a "forward" as opposed to a striker. He will add another dimension to our game, if we sign him...

Let’s give this hungry young lad a chance! All these Yakubu’s and Reo-Cokers can’t be that good if they got relegated last season.

My lad was mascot for the Coventry game and we watched it again the other night. I made the point of watching Guly. Try it. He was outstanding.
Agree Guly is class and was ever present for the first half of the season when we were unstoppable - NA knows what he give us. I think for some on this site his failure to challenge for the Pompey equaliser at FP was unforgiveable. But I prefer to remember the two most sublime Guly moments of last season - his header from Fox's cross against Coventry away and his lay off to SDR for the equaliser against Reading away. Both things of beauty and such important goals too.

First of all we need to land Jay Rod, the deal is not done until he signs. For everything potential signing there will be many reasons why they would not sign for Saints, getting the right player is a tough task. We will miss out on many when we think the player will sign. Saints job next season is to beat the bookies and not get demoted. Realistically we are in competition with around eight clubs and who knows we may do much better. We will still need a new goalkeeper, defensive, attacking midfielder with possible cover at centre back and left/right backs. Sound like a big list and we probably will not be able to afford all of these. So we need to prioritise, keep our bits crossed and see what happens. Still need to move on a few more players who struggled last season. Either way NC and NA, both our best kept secrets, have already been very busy. This will be a tough year, we will no longer be in a small column on the Sunday paper and we will be front page when it all goes well. Every expert will be analysing all we do, the great news is we are going to be discussed again, it is important we get the deals done as early as possible and prepare for a rollercoaster ride of the PL. It’s all about opinions as they say. Me, I’m happy to let our management do what they are paid to do, make tough decisions and improve on the previous season. They seem to have done quite well up to now don’t you think?

If J-Rod signs on the dotted line, then I think you doubters should consider the P word, POTENTIAL.
I don’t buy this line that a player who has not played in the Prem before will not cut it. I know it’s a big step up but so will it be for a number of our boys, but they have POTENTIAL.

If you doubt me, I’ve two words for you – Andy Townsend.
Weymouth to Southampton, the boy did good, because our management spotted POTENTIAL.

Well, well, well.

Didn't take long for the doubters to turn up did it! Lets face it, they are probably the same people that said we'd struggle to get a play-off place, that Ricky wouldn't score in the championship, and that Cortese was looking to sell the club.

There was a certain amount of eye-opening last year with regards to goal scorers. Holt in the Premier, Ricky in the Championship, and Rhodes in Division 1. This has led more Premier teams to look at options from lower leagues.

There are apparently several teams interested in Jay-Rod, and if this rumour is true, it shows that we have a bit of ambition about us; something that Marcus Liebher and Nicola Cortese stated from day one of their taking over this fantastic club. To date, everything that they have said they will do, they have done.

So, my first question is WHY?

Why are there still doubters?
Why do people question Nicola's loyalty to Southampton PLC?
Why do people still question the ability of the management set-up to target the right players, and who are you to say that Jay-rod wont go on to become a highly valued member of the Southampton and England squad?

Lets be blunt. If we don't get him, someone else will. Adkins has targeted him last year, as well as this, so he obviously believes he has something about him.

My second point on my rant is about Guly. I am sick to death of hearing idiots slating him.

As an ex pro player, my belief is that those of you who hate him ought to be taken into a field and shot for impersonating a football fan. Part of the problem isn't that Guly is crap, it's that he is light-tears ahead of many of the Saints team. The amount of times I've seen Guly play ball into space, just for it to go to the opposition is ludicrous. Most of the time though it isn't his fault, but other players fault for not seeing the opportunity in the first place.

Yes there have been games when he has hardly been involved, and yes there have been times when he doesn't seem to try, but I could say the same about Adam Lallana, or Ricky Lambert.

At the end of the day why don't you doubters either get behind every member of Southampton FC - "together as one"

Failing that, you should either shut u, or go and support the skates.
I don’t buy this line that a player who has not played in the Prem before will not cut it. I know it’s a big step up but so will it be for a number of our boys, but they have POTENTIAL.

If you doubt me, I’ve two words for you – Andy Townsend.
Weymouth to Southampton, the boy did good, because our management spotted POTENTIAL.
Thats right. RL has never played in the premier but he had potential when we signed him and he will do just fine now we are in the premier. That is the the knack of a good manager, being able to spot potential and develop it. Oh ye of little faith, the premier kingdom is not got you.

Guly is the man as far as I'm concerned. Can't fault a player who contributed with goals and assists and we got promoted! What do people want from the guy! He's brazillian for heavens sake. He lives football and has quality built in. This season with more space on the pitch and the ball being on the ground more we'll see the real Guly. Can't wait.

You judge a player on one game?
no but have seen him on highlights programmes an dont see anything in him we havent got already
I saw some highlights of his goals, and they were class. He strikes the ball exceptionally well. One thing which I think we lack at times is directness. If you look at some of Jay's goals he's willing to take on defenders and create an opportunity for himself. Other than Lee, I don't think any of our other strikers really have the ability/pace to do this.

With the £7m being claimed, it won't all be upfront, I expect £4-5m will be upfront, then added bonuses if we stay up, he gets an international cap etc.

On his ambition for apparently not joining before, when Lallana refuses to join another club we call it loyalty, yet if another team's player does it, then it's a lack of ambition. I don't blame him for not wanting to join us before as it's a big move for a young player, and it wasn't certain that we would be up. I think he'd be a good signing and would add to our current squad

Mixed reviews on Guly, however the Cov game last day of the season he proved to me that he dose want to play for the saints.

he had 100% commitment and was 100% class.

take my hat off to him for that game.

his problem is inconstancy. if he can sort that out. he will be a top player. if not he will have to start on the bench.

what do people think about the possibility of lee or Rodriguez on the right wing?

Don't really think much else to say on this thread. There are those amongst us who judge a player before he has even signed for us let alone kick a ball for us. Others who are prepared to back the decision of the club to buy a young player who fits the profile of what we are trying to achieve. Time will tell whether JayRod is the real deal and whether he matches our ambitions or indeed we match his. Bring on the new season can't wait to see which side is right, the half fulls or the half empties!

It's worth remembering that it's not automatic that Jay Rod will pass a medical with us. So let's not count any chickens.

If, in your attempt to try and be superior to other posters, you had spent just a few seconds more thinking about it instead of rushing off to Google, you may have understood better.

Your definition is correct which is exactly what I meant about his negotiations with the club. Be open and honest and put your cards on the table, don't prEvaricate with our management in the hope that by dragging your feet a bigger and better offer comes along. Remember Kevin Phillips? Every time we met his stated demands the goal posts moved, meanwhile his agent was hawking him around hoping for better, his prEvarication was to buy time. He never shifted that cloud in his time here.

At the end of the day why don't you doubters either get behind every member of Southampton FC - "together as one" Failing that, you should either shut u, or go and support the skates.[/p]
Great Post. Our attendances will increase next year which is a good thing. A couple of my mates are buying ST's for them and their kids, one supports Villa another Fulham, places of their birth. They always like to see Saints do well but aren't true fans like we all are. Their attendance will do well for crowd numbers and our coffers but it wont add anything to the atmosphere, infact it will probably dilute it. I noticed when we got down to our core support SMS rocked more than it usually does when full. It's a difficult problem to solve, I don't have an answer. I suppose we hope the kids become true Saints as they are from here.

If we continue to do a good bit of business and get in a few Class Signings - then SAINTS will deliver with good football and WINS Home and Away in the Premiership.

Like Birmingham Away last season (to mention just one selected game when it was snowing) - the Support was Magnificent and all you could hear on TV (recorded to watch later) was THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

You lot can be miserable sods at times. JR seems to be by all accounts a promising player. Maybe another Danny Graham? Why not assume that NA recognises talent? He doesn't seem to have made too many mistakes so far (maybe Jonathan Fort, but at least he didn't cost us anything). If you look at these clips (below) it looks as if JayRod could play the Rickie role if we needed him to, the Sharp role, or more likely the Guly wide right role. Or any combination of the three. I think I'd pay good money (hang on, I'm about to do just that!) to see Lallana, Rickie, Sharp and Rodriguez ranged across St Marys. With Lee, Guly and de Ridder queuing up to come on...

People old enough to remeber PeterOsgood playing for the Saints will remember him being light years ahead of his team mates and playing the ball where they should have been. NC and NA will have been monitoring Rodriguez for a long time...if they think he's worth 6-7 mill then that is fine by me. Nigel will see a player he can train into the Southampton mould. If they want him, what is the point in going in at a low price and start a bidding war. Go in hard and frighten off the competition.
Guly can not only score and provide assists, he is also pretty useful as last ditch defender. You can't be effective all over the pitch and be lazy...he just has a laid back style.

Many Interesting comments on here today. I'm sitting on the fence with this one.
NA & NC have done very well up until now. Let us hope they have got it right this time.
I would like to point out that those who quote his 21 goals for Burnley should read the whole of his record for 2011/2012 season.
4 goals were scored against Burton Albion in the F.A. cup. 1 was against Barnet also in the Cup. 3 were penalties, in 37 appearances. Leaving 13 league goals.
I know it takes nerve to take penalties ( Chelsea v Bayern springs to mind )
I don't think Rickie will let hin take them as long as he is on the pitch.

Nice one, Confucious! Half of the correspondents will have to eat their words and the other half will smugly say 'I told you so'.

the thing is we have signed 3 Strikers in less than 5 months, so in my opinion it would be impossible for them all to be successful ,given that only 2 play, the only way to get a return is if a player get injured or losses form but the way to go is to have a small, versatile squad and that's where the likes of Gully who can play in midfield and upfront are so valuable.

COYR[/p]
the thing is we have signed 3 Strikers in less than 5 months, so in my opinion it would be impossible for them all to be successful ,given that only 2 play, the only way to get a return is if a player get injured or losses form but the way to go is to have a small, versatile squad and that's where the likes of Gully who can play in midfield and upfront are so valuable. Interesting debates ,why are we signing players with NO prem experience, blah blah blah, Well Im guessing that NA and NC and the scouting network know a lot more that most of us, Im a great believer in giving someone a chance, and Jay rod if he signs ?is hardly a gamble-great player, hungry something to prove, played in the england set up and can score goals .or would we rather have the YAK!!!.
No contest, and as for being called arrrogant by one poster for hoping that we aspire to overhaul the likes of everton,We have to be ambitious if we hope to do well in this league, should I settle for survival ,no, I want mid table superiority-at least. The days of hoping we just scrape by are long gone.Try telling ricky lambert that lower league players cant hack it the prem-Ill hold your coat.

Well said Tug, N.A and N.C are the best people to worry about who we bring in, and yes, we should aspire to do well, me, well I'm hoping a top 10 finish in the first year is on, with Europe coming the following season.

A point....Poopey got relegated from the 2nd level with players who had experience, and wages to match, from the top level.
Jayrod is a lot younger than Ricky and will learn quicker.
Potential is easy to spot, having the werewithal to go for it is something else.
Players that Saints have sold for large amounts in recent years were prospects that other clubs saw and wanted.
We are now one of those bigger clubs and we will rape other clubs youth systems, Stephens from Plymouth?
We are going to do well this coming season and that is because we are not sitting still, new young players will come in and some of our recent favourites may well depart.
There may well be an experienced head brought in, but not at the cost of disruption.
Do not be afraid of losing one or two games, just keep cheering for our team and hoping, and remember all the players in Saints shirts are our team, ALL of them !

Experience is one thing but having a manager who gets the best from both the experienced and unexperienced is the key. Pompey for instance had the experience but rubbish management. A good manager would have kept that club in the prem.
.
Saints have a great manager in Nige who has proved beyond doubt that he can get the best from the young and inexperienced as well has the more established members of the squad.
.
Personally I think Nige is best with players who don't think their way is best because they've played in the prem before for a 'top 6' team etc. So, players like Owen wouldn't fit in at St Mary's because his mind doesn't and won't work in the 'Southampton Way' and he may undermine Nige's approach.

I hope it will be a great purchace for us..what is the difference with us and Arsenal? maybe the "fact" that they have a squad of PROVEN EXPERIENCED premiership players, they can afford to "see" if he makes it. Yes we need to look at the future, But I think we also need to be looking at Experienced "loan for this season" players that have been there and done it. They might not be the best players, but once again I will use the words, Experienced, Proven, premiership players. that will teach the youngsters so much in training and on the pitch. All squads need the mixture..Di Santos, Dirk Kuyt, Yak, Reo Coker are to name some that are available. Not saying they should be the ones, but the sort of experience we will need for a season.

Who did you play for, out of interest?
I was on Arsenals books. made a handful of appearances. Went out on loan and got seriously injured. If it happened these days they might have been able to get me playing again. Not the greatest career.
Cheers for answering.
Still a career though, and more than most of us on here had for sure! Good to hear the views of someone who played the game at a professional level.(very much in the same way that Gary Neville is light years ahead as best TV pundit, as he actually analyzes and explains so it's easy for everyone to understand, instead of just shouting hyperbole like alot of TV 'faces')
I think the same about Guly-He puts in a hell of a shift usually tracking back(at least, alot more than he gets credit for) and generally he's if anything too good/quick minded for the players around him at times. I think alot of fans see a pass not reach it's target, and assume it was a bad ball, but actually if the players around you have made the runs that have been practised in training, or have had the instinct to make a surprise run, it turns into a worldy pass.

We can only wait and see what players come to us and i for one do not think THE DON OR THE KING will buy players who will not help us progress further as a PREMIER CLUB.

I have 3 questions this morning for everyone;

1) has anyone seen Jay Rod at SMS yet? (Claims of seeing him having a medical with Matty Holland will be ignored)

2) when are the skunts going to be liquidated?

3) how do you change your user name on here???

Now that I am no longer 'rob the saint in NZ' I have tried to change my name to something up to date & appropriate, but haven't fathomed out how to do it!

All polite answers to a technological luddite will be much appreciated!

You judge a player on one game?
no but have seen him on highlights programmes an dont see anything in him we havent got already

He will add another dimension to our game, if we sign him...[/p]
