Who know's he might star for Cheltenham and then get head-hunted by the big-boys?"

Saints make Butland enquiry

Saints have enquired after England goalkeeper Jack Butland – but are likely to have to offer first team football to land him.

The 19-year-old was a shock call-up for Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad, despite having not yet played a single club game for Birmingham.

Saints will sign a new keeper this summer after releasing Bartosz Bialkowski, leaving only the unfancied Tommy Forecast, who has not made a single appearance for the club in four years at St Mary’s, as the only back-up for Kelvin Davis.

The Daily Echo can confirm that Saints have enquired after the young stopper, rated at around £3m, but are one of a number of Premier League clubs to do so with Newcastle, Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham also interested.

It is understood that Butland, who is contracted to Birmingham until 2015, is only interested in a move away from St Andrew’s if he can be guaranteed some first team football.

He is likely to get that at Birmingham next season with the Blues expected to cash in on Ben Foster this summer.

For Nigel Adkins that would mean having drop Championship keeper of the year Davis or somehow change Butland’s mind to convince him he will be the long term replacement for Davis who turns 36 in September.
