No sign of interest in Upson
6:20am Wednesday 6th June 2012 in Saints News
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Matthew Upson
Saints’ reported approach for former England centre half Matthew Upson is apparently simple rumour.
The Daily Echo understands that, contrary to reports in national newspapers, Saints have not contacted Stoke City regarding the 33-year-old defender, who has an estimated value of £500,000.
There has been widespread speculation that Saints will attempt to sign a new central defender this summer with Radhi Jaidi having retired leaving Jose Fonte, Jos Hooiveld, Aaron Martin and the recovering Dan Seaborne as options in that area.
None of those four have played in the Premier League and Saints are keen to recruit some greater top flight experience into their squad.
Upson certainly fits that bill having spent virtually an entire career amongst English football’s elite, having won 21 caps for his country and played in a World Cup. However, it is understood that no move has been made for Upson and that it is currently thought unlikely that any will be forthcoming.

Back to the future signings, how about jamie o'hara, i know he is an ex skate but only on loan so that doesn't count, but he would provide that extra bit of quality and bite in midfield, just a thought.

What more is there to say - it appears to be an unsubstantiated rumour during the usual close-season rumour mill.
As much as I enjoy reading all the speculation about who we have/might/may/won't sign in the coming months, I do get a bit annoyed when people become impatient that we haven't signed anyone yet & sound like they are losing faith in the team & management that have taken us so far so quickly.
Sure, speculate as much as you like, but don't lose focus - we have a great team, manager, chairman, back-room staff, etc.
Back them to make the right decisions & just support the Saints through thick & thin. We had the 'thin' from '05 - '09, now let's keep on enjoying the 'thick'!
We are Premier League, & it feels great to be back!

Far more important things did not happen yesterday - many of them quite sensational.....
No key player or management official was fatally injured in a holiday accident whilst on holiday.
St Marys stadium is intact after a freak storm, (destroying 75% of the stands - which would certainly delay our season start), did not happen.
No club official has been arrested for fraud following discovery of a massive financial black hole which would, had it happened, have plunged the club into liquidation.
No key player was caught in bed with three other players wives and their pet dogs and therefore there was not a huge fight causing total destruction of club morale and team ethos.
Nicola has not had a nervous breakdown and doubled the cost of all new season tickets plus put a 500% premium on all fat blokes' entry prices.
I'm sure most on here will be well aware of many other crucial events which haven't happened -much to our joy and relief. You may also feel duty bound to inform the Echo as and when they don't happen.

So the Sun have us down as getting Kevin De Bruyne from Chelsea on loan ;) I hope so, great player...
Now to sign some defenders! If Shaw and Stephens have been promoted who's going to go out of Richardson/Butterfie
ld and Fox/Harding. I'd keep Butterfield and get rid of the others personally. Bring in a prem left back and CB to give us more of a chance to cope with the world class players we'll be up against. Thoughts?

When there is no news I think the Echo is absolutely right to highlight the fact that an enquiry for Upson hasn't happened. However, I do think their sense of 'news value' is somewhat flawed.

what signs should i look for ?.
the fact that the echo has or has not reported my demise doesn't seem to help.
we need the daily echo to be more positive with it's reporting otherwise we could have a lot of dead people walking the streets and not knowing they are extinct

Just an update regarding Jay Rod.
Whilst stood by the reception desk waiting to go into the gym this morning at 5.45am, my mate mentioned had we signed Jay Rod yet and without any prompting the girl behind the reception said "did you say Jay Rodriguez", I said yes and she replied (without knowing I am a saints fan) " he's off to Southampton. Turns out she is best mates with him having known him since they were kids, she then went on to say that he is on holiday at the moment and will be joining when he comes back, we will se how that pans out then.COYR”
And good news all round at that. Good news for Saints, good news for Jay Rod, good news for you because you'll have a decent chat-up line every time you go to the gym and good news for the receptionist who'll now become a Saints fan just as we're on th crest of world domination.
I'm just a little worried that any sane person would go to the gym at 5.45am. In fact, come to think of it, I've yet to meet any sane person who goes to the gym at all.

At the passport control they asked "Nationality"?
She said "German".
They asked "Occupation"?
She said "No, not this time, it's just a short holiday".
