Rodriguez edges closer to Saints move

Jay Rodriguez Jay Rodriguez

JAY Rodriguez looks set to complete his move to Saints in the next few days, with the striker expected to undergo a medical before the weekend.

A £7m fee has already been agreed for the 22-year-old Burnley forward, who is due to return from a holiday in Mexico today.

Saints are understood to have been discussing personal terms with Rodriguez’s advisors ahead of his arrival back in the country, and it is hoped the finishing touches can now be applied to the deal.

The Clarets’ star frontman could be put through his St Mary’s medical as early as today, with the indications being that it will likely happen at some stage in the next 48 hours.

Barring any late hitches, that should pave the way for Rodriguez to officially become a Saints player by early next week.

O, just had a look on the OS and it seems they're discounting the kit by 50% and only have fat b@stard sizes left in stock. We're blatantly getting a new kit for the prem. I just hope the away kit doesn't change too much - it's mint.

Until a couple of major signings are on board (including a 'keeper) the fans will be restless. Not much can be done about that. NA and NC must do their jobs properly, and that takes time. In the meantime we have to sit and wait and shuffle around until some real news breaks.

I suggest the Echo puts up a few Sudoku puzzles each day.

I think that was the original plan. Obviously, now we're a Premiership club we need to bring out a new kit every season. I wonder if we'll have a different sponsor, too? In a way I hope not as I like having a local company on our shirts but, equally, I can see us buying our way out of the deal and getting some international brand on board.

O, I saw the new Manure kit 'in the flesh' the other day. It's the ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life. If we can manage something better than that then it would be good. Thanks.

There's a weird mood ahead of the Euros, isn't there? I don't know anyone who a) thinks we'll get out of our group or b) cares if we don't.

I don't know whether it's because having John Terry in the team makes people actively want us to lose, or whether the appointment of Roy Hodgson has forced us all to admit to ourselves and the world that we're the West Brom of international football.

On the site they're now calling our present kit the 2011-2012 kit, whereas once it was the 2011-2013 kit.

There's definitely something 'afoot'.

As for Roy, I think he's a specialist in making small clubs hard to beat and that's where his expertise ends. You can see from his time at Liverpool that when it comes to open, expansive football of the kind played by any of the decent international teams that he just hasn't got what it takes.

Yes, the less optimism we have about England the better. Then we won't be disappointed, especially with John Terry in the team. In fact, the less interest we have, the better too in that case.

I think Rodriguez has real potential and could grow into being a great premiership striker so understand the high transfer free but I am worried about the constant speculation that he does not want to leave the north and is holding out for a Everton, Sunderland etc bid - Hope this is all just rumour and bulls*it as I dont want players at the club who dont buy into the Southampton way and dont necessarily want to be here - Our team has an incredible team spirit that has brought about back to back promotions and dont want that disrupted. If Jay can come here long term and give us 100% even if he is not starting every week then I welcom him because with the striking talent we have we will have to have some rotation and bench warming going on for either Sharp, Lee San or Rodriguez.

Yes, but if he sh@gs team mates partners then it's hardly going to do much for team spirit is it?

His racist comments have led to Ferdinand being left behind which is a bit tough on an innocent party! It has also led to a media frenzy. These are all part of the negative impact caused by JT.

That's your perogative. But the thing is he's not that good any more, plus he's carrying an injury that could well mean his first game is his last and we'll have alienated an awful lot of people (including Rio Ferdinand and a lot of fans) for nothing.

The best way to lead your team is to lead by example once he puts in some full hearted crunching tackles all will soon be forgotten.

I believe terry is head a shoulders above Rio,

I think he should still be England captain. he has numerous black team mates for chelski and he gets on with them fine ...

Yes, but if he sh@gs team mates partners then it's hardly going to do much for team spirit is it?

His racist comments have led to Ferdinand being left behind which is a bit tough on an innocent party! It has also led to a media frenzy. These are all part of the negative impact caused by JT.

As far as the Euros go, I think we should have left JT and Rio both at home, I think their best at this level is behind them. As it has turned out with the injury to Cahill the story has grown into a monster with Rio still not selected for “footballing reasons”. When did we not go into a tournament without the press finding a dark negative angle to blow up into a frenzy and the England team fall apart in the process?

We should learn from the Italians. Yet another scandal, yet another average team, but I expect them to get through to the latter stages.

IMO Germany to beat Spain in the final, top scorer Benzema

His loss. Now, what do you think about England's chances? I think that what's really holding us back is that no one could even be bothered to do a song. It kind of sends out a message that we're prepared to let the whole shitstorm sink before we set sail. But there's still time: if One Direction can come up with a slightly more 'up' version of David Bowie's 'Warszawa' by tomorrow lunchtime we can save this.

I think to say it's the wrong place to hold the Euro's is unfair. If you limited to places where there are absolutely no problems at all, then it would just switch between 3-4 countries each time, which might not include us because of current Premiership racism problems and violence at derby matches. Holding it in places like Poland and Ukraine brings the problems to light, and gives them an opportunity to deal with them. I think Panorama was especially harsh in its documentary, as this doesn't seem to occur at international matches, and is generally a minority of fans. I think that these countries are just 20-30 years behind ourselves in terms of development. I would agree that awarding the World Cup to Qatar was a decision purely based on money though.

He looks a cracker. The only problem I have is a question of ethics. I’m not sure it is a good idea for teams to be able to farm out players to opponents in the same league, remember West Ham trying to scupper us last year.

Having said that, if we can get him I’m willing to accept I’m a man of low moral fibre when it suits :)

Why can't they go and see him? Last I heard there were loads of tickets available for Monday's match.

Anyway, let's be a little optimistic, a little pessimistic and a whole lot realistic; any of the teams there could win it, just as Greece and Denmark proved; it's unlikely to be England because, let's face it, there has probably never been a more ill-prepared, average, injury-ridden England squad packed off to a tournament. Somehow, the Scotland WC teams of the '70s spring to mind.

Meanwhile, it's great to hear the views of fans from other teams (i.e. Burnley in JR's case). Alas, they're no more or less informed than we are. If he comes, he comes, if he doesn't, he doesn't and we move on.

Kammy? Do you think he'll get more votes than Engelbert?

Absolutely. The success of the last three seasons has been based on a massive team spirit, a unity, everyone playing for everyone else. Whenever I'm with the players, which I'm lucky enough to be several times a season, you can feel the team spirit - it's very real. So there isn't room for somone who believes he should be somewhere 'bigger and better' as he simply wont fit in and will do himself and the team a dis-service.

aoc does not have my respect - or his greedy money hungry dad for the cowardly way they left THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON when there was a FIGHT in the CHAMPIONSHIP TO JOIN THE PREMIERSHIP ELITES !!

oxo has been average playing for ENGLAND during his short appearances and all the running in the world showing him warming down after the norway game does not impress anyone - certainly not me. Instead of playing for the NUMBER ONE CLUB IN THE SOUTH - he chose to sit on the bench for much of the Season - playing his football on the Training ground and feeding his bank account.

DAVID CONNOLLY - I have respect for after his class goal against brighton at the withdean - whereas aoc used to play for us in League One only to go off with muscle cramps.

There are so many heroes for SOUTHAMPTON - and I applaud them and every single SAINTS FAN.

You can rest assured that the Saints management are working hard behind the scenes to bring the right players in.

But what right do any of us have, season ticket holder or not, to be told what's happening every step of the way.

For one thing, it would alert other clubs as to who we are after and what we might have bid for them etc.

Well he can whistle out of his jacksie if he think I want him back. I'm going to get Franny Benali in to do the rap instead.
He didn't whistle out of his jacksie, but he did eat alphabet soup and sh!t the lyrics.

Dunno if it's been said or not already, there will be new kit, mainly due to the problems on some with the logo turning pink in places. From what I've seen on various links it could be mainly red with thin white stripes and according to a total random the away kit is going to be white. Dunno why we have to change the away kit too as there was no problem with that

To be fair, he probably could have done. Have you ever heard Bowie's Warzsawa? The entire lyrics are: "So-lavie di-le-jo, So-lavie di-le-jo, He-li venco -de-ho, Chi-le venco de-ho, Malio, He-libo se-yo-man, He-libo se-yo-man, Malio, Malio!"

It's nonsense, really, but you can't knock the thin white duke.

While we're on the subject of experimental late-70s Bowie tracks, they could do a version of 'TVC 15' but ammend it to 'AOC 15'. Admittedly, that would work better if Alex Oxlade Chamberlain's squad number wasn't 20, but you can't have everything.

KANU: I'm not dead!
MORTICIAN: What?
ADMINSTRATOR: Nothing -- here's your nine pence.
KANU: I'm not dead!
MORTICIAN: Here -- he says he's not dead!
ADMINSTRATOR: Yes, he is.
KANU: I'm not!
MORTICIAN: He isn't.
ADMINSTRATOR: Well, he will be soon, he's very ill.
KANU: I'm getting better! (I could play next season)
ADMINSTRATOR: No, you're not -- you'll be stone dead in a moment.
MORTICIAN: Oh, I can't take him like that -- it's against regulations.
KANU: I don't want to go in the cart! (I’m only 48)
ADMINSTRATOR: Oh, don't be such a baby.

Well that just shows how little you know about football then St Retford!! I suggest you google Hodgson's career as a manager before you base his expertise on a short stint at a club, that quite frankly is still living on its past history! I don't think the likes of Inter Milan employ you twice as a manager just for the fun of it!

If we are signing Jay we will not know how much we paid for him. As we do not disclose transfers these days. Being in his last year of his contract I would safely knock off a couple million off the price.
Secondly Martin going to Palace could be more significant, who then is coming the other way Clyne or Saha! I really think things are going to start moving now. The window has been open since the 26th of May and it has been very quiet so far. I really hope we get Butland he played well last season for Birmingham. I Honestly did not see Martin moving out on loan. He was not on my list of ten or so players.

Doesn't sound the nicest does it? Saints shirts that have been predominantly white (eg the two most recent) have always looked better than mainly red designs such as the centenary shirt and the European shirt from 2003.
Always fond of a yellow away shirt too.
That said, as long as we're doing the business on the pitch I won't be to bothered

I was in the Saints shop at St. Marys on Saturday & asked about the new shirts. They said nobody in the shop knew what the new shirts would be like yet, but confirmed there was a new home & new away shirt coming. They'd not had any confirmation of the launch date. Personally I'd prefer a traditional red & white stripe again.

Ready in the gossip pages that Chaplow is part of the deal for Rodriguez . This would be a shame we played our best football last season when Chappers was playing. He would be a useful squad player. I would be happier if Puncheon was part of the deal. I have a feeling that aleast half a dozen players will be brought in. He is already clearing the decks. Barney will next , hopefully followed by Hammond.

NA has said he wants to bring the players in during the summer, and not next January, so they will be coming.
That could be a worry then as you are not famous for your summers are you?

Im afraid you are right. This deal is dragging on a bit and there just isnt the optimism about it that you would expect of a player joining a premiership club from a lower division. Most would jump at ay the chance but not Rodrigues he just doesnt really want a move south and is stalling in the hope of a northern club meeting Burnley's valuation although that does not seem likely neither Aston Villa or Sunderland have any real money. If he doesnt commit today its not going to happen period.
