Premier League bosses vote Rickie Lambert as a threat

Daily Echo: Rickie Lambert Rickie Lambert

Premier League managers have voted Rickie Lambert as the lower league player most likely to succeed in the top flight.

The 30-year-old will graduate from the Football League into the elite level of the English game when the new season begins, writes Gordon Simpson.

And Lambert, who netted 31 goals for Saints last term, has received the firm backing of Premier League bosses.

In a survey commissioned by Barclays, title sponsor of the League Managers Association, they were asked which one player from the lower divisions has the potential to play in the top flight.

Lambert, pictured, was the runaway winner, polling 33 per cent of the vote.

Burnley’s Jay Rodriguez, who looks set to complete a £7m move to Saints in the next few days, came second among those who responded, with seven per cent.

A total of 40 per cent of voters picked Saints to fare best next season out of the three sides promoted from the Championship.

Second tier champions Reading polled the same amount, while West Ham garnered just 20 per cent of that particular vote.

Former Saints boss Alan Pardew’s proficiency in the transfer market was also recognised.

The research indicated that 33 per cent of managers considered striker Papiss Cisse as the best buy of the season.

His Newcastle teammate, Demba Ba, was second on 20 per cent alongside Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, A whopping 73 per cent of respondents picked Spain to win this summer’s European Championship, with the remainder of voters choosing Germany.

The same numbers appeared when top flight managers were asked to give their opinion on how England will fare in Poland and Ukraine.

Quarter-finals was the choice pick, with 73 per cent, while the remaining 27 per cent plumped for a semi-final exit.

Joe Hart was picked as the man expected to be England’s best player at Euro 2012, polling 60 per cent.

Rickie Lambert is the best English centre forward in the country and has been for the last 3 years.
Ignor the leauges he has played in, it would have been the same had he have played in the Prem.

Contrary to these managers' expectations, I am sure he will play in an advanced midfield roll, this coming season.
Using his great positional sense, ball control and passing ability, he can be used to the full.
Billy Sharp and (Jay)or Tadanari will play further forward.
I think he will be very distructive playing there as he proved early last season. The other benefit it will cut down the tendecy of the defence going long.
We can't do that in the Prem, if we do we then have 50-50 chance of losing posesssion.
Absolute no-no in the Prem.

Excellent post. Once again SFCOLDBOY you are talking a lot of good sense.

I reckon NA is thinking along these lines, hence the interest in Rodriguez. His next purchase will shed more light on how the line up will play.

We do however need another midfield player of Lallana's calibre to add creativity and also to win the ball. We also know that we need further investment in defence as we are prone to being caught on the counter attack.

I hope NA can weave his strategy together with the signings he still needs. At this stage its all looking good.

I didn't say that Rickie wont be scoring goals. He will almost certaily be our top scorrer again.
In this position he will be harder to mark and will be more involved in the game, similar to Matt Tiss in his hey day, particularly when Alan Ball was manager.(this brought the best out of him).

Like to see a new CB because of Jose Fonte's performance last Season which was inconsistent.

Like to see a new RB - Danny Butterfield will struggle against Top Quality in the Premiership.

Take your point about a LB - the whole Defensive Line needs to be reviewed with only Jos Hooiveld's place safe after some good football and goals last Season.

Looking forward to news on the Keeper - hope he is Top quality so Kelvin and him can fight to be Number One.

Interesting discussion on Ricky, I felt that NA has got much more out of Ricky and has used him less as a 'direct' target man, which Pardew did when signing him, to get us out of league 1. NA has got him playing a bit deeper and pulling into space near the channels and his control & vision (Not as good as Le Tiss) brings others into play. Now with Lee, Rod & Sharpe we have pace attacking defenders (not Sharpe...yet). However, he still could score 20+ this season with set pieces & penalties. I think NA needs a big praise for developing the team & players and the reason Ricky wasn't gambled on by bigger teams 3 years ago was because he 'appeared' solely as a target man without pace, Pardew saw goals in him, correctly, but NA has developed him further and he's now a main cogg in the 'southampton way'.

Thanks,
Can't wait to see our new signings, the season can't come too soon.
Haha! Are you two mad??

Lambert's scored 88 goals upfront in 3 seasons and you wanna see him play in midfield?? God help you!
I didn't say that Rickie wont be scoring goals. He will almost certaily be our top scorrer again.
In this position he will be harder to mark and will be more involved in the game, similar to Matt Tiss in his hey day, particularly when Alan Ball was manager.(this brought the best out of him).
Anyway the last time I looked, I havent found any hairs on the palms of my hands (usually the first signs of madness) and my opinions do not need the devine help of god.

Lambert will continue to lead the line, but will also continue to drift wide or come short, a la Teddy Sheringham.
Therefore we need players that will be willing to get ahead of him, into the space he creates.

I like the idea of that and it certainly makes him harder to mark as he will definitely be the man the opposition managers will be looking to nullify

Lambert started his career as a midfielder and has evolved into a striker. I like him and he plays good football............
.... But he is a poor mans t sheringham and the wrong side of 30, he can play on but does struggle with fitness and needs outlets, pacy ones at that. This won't be popular but it is realistic.

I agree he lacks pace and a certain amount of fitness, true, but Le Tiss wasn't exactly a greyhound, but what these players do possess is instant ball control along with team mates postions & this then means they have more time on the ball and create more opportunities. The reason some strikers/players who have more pace than skill struggle to play 1st team football when injury hits or pace slows eg Owen, Johnson, Dyer, even our own Marion Pharahs was never the same after his injury. It'll be interesting how RL does against the top defenders after years spent in lower leagues.

fat chant from a Poopey fan ?
they had the original fatty, the curly haired , mustachioed, pie eating Micky Quinn ?
the chant was invented for him!
and he had no where near Ricky's goal scoring record, so go away and invent some new chants, start with "we are now in league 1 and going down again !"

Voted Championship top player by his fellow pros just ahead of his team mate Adam.

Both top players but not in the league of some of yours, well if salary is anything to go by that is.

How are TBH, Kanu and the others? Prepared to kill you club off for a dollar more I see.

Are you a Chainrai or a Trust man?
