Martin loan means Saints are in market for defender

Daily Echo: Aaron Martin Aaron Martin

SAINTS underlined their desire to sign at least one new centre back this summer after allowing Aaron Martin to go on a season-long loan to Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old will join the Championship side for the duration of the 2012/13 campaign, as he bids to gain more first-team experience.

His departure, coupled with Radhi Jaidi’s retirement, leaves Saints with just three senior centre backs in their squad – Jose Fonte, Jos Hooiveld and Dan Seaborne.

Reinforcement is needed, and it is clear that allowing Martin to go means the club soon plan to boost numbers in that department.

They have already been linked with a host of centre backs this summer.

Blackburn’s Scott Dann is a notable name, with Rovers’ relegation from the Premier League likely to mean his departure from Ewood Park.

Zat Knight, who is out of contract at Bolton this summer and is yet to sign a new deal, is another who has been linked, as has Zak Whitbread, who was released by Norwich.

Birmingham’s Curtis Davies, Stoke’s Matthew Upson and even USA international Geoff Cameron, of Houston Dynamo, have all been rumoured to be on the club’s radar too.

While specific targets remain unknown, what is crystal clear is Saints’ intention to strengthen the heart of their backline.

None of their current centre halves can boast any Premier League experience, although Hooiveld has played in the Scottish top flight with Celtic and has also appeared in the Champions League.

While Fonte has plenty of Championship games under his belt, Seaborne has very few, having missed almost all of the last campaign with a serious head injury.

Saints have also promoted youngster Jack Stephens into the firstteam.

While the 18-year-old is regarded as a highly promising defender, he is yet to be tested at senior level with Saints.

Former Eastleigh defender Martin still has another two years to run on his contract at St Mary’s.

Manager Nigel Adkins was insistent yesterday that allowing him to join the Eagles was not a sign that his future lies away from Saints.

“This will be a great move for Aaron in terms of his development at Southampton Football Club,” he told the club’s website.

Adkins added: “He has a long-term contract here and we see a bright future for him, but to keep progressing he needs to be playing regular football, and he will get that at Crystal Palace.”

If used regularly, the move should benefit Martin in the long run.

Since joining Saints in 2009, he has made just 29 first-team appearances.

He was perhaps an unwitting victim of Alan Pardew’s dismissal in August 2010, having begun to establish himself in the starting XI under the previous Saints boss.

Following Pardew’s sacking, however, he found opportunities more limited.

So the chance to gain regular Championship experience should prove valuable.

Breaking back into the side at Saints may prove a challenge, though, especially if the club can establish themselves in the Premier League.

But Adkins’ words will provide Martin with encouragement.

It is now up to him to enhance his reputation with the Eagles and put his manager’s comments to the test.

Cant see Seabourne being a back up this season.Needs t a full season playing again like Martin. Think it might be 1 permanent signing and 1 loan at CB

Surely Martin was better and more experienced than Stephens so I think buy one and loan one

I think we maybe looking at an older CB to come in, Martin has a bright future so not much need for a 25 year old player for example. Also maybe a loan for a younger player with Premier League experience

I can only assume that something has been sorted already. Saints would not make such an obvious move otherwise. I can see there being a couple of player unveiled at once, perhaps hence the Jay Rod delay.

I think this is a good move for him.
Although he put in some good shifts for Saints last season, he has a tendency to be caught out of position and been too close to his attacker at times , who, if quick, gets by him.
With game time, he will be able to learn more about the game and come back a much improved player.
Good luck for the season.

Knowing the way NC & NA operate, there are probably two CB signings on the way, & we won't have a clue who they are until they're unveiled (not literally.)

I think Nigel (and Les, for that matter) are being given quite a lot of money to bolster the team with real quality. I'd expect at least one very decent centre back and I doubt that will be the end of it. We went straight through the Championship with what was essentially our League One team and I don't think Nicola is going to be under any illusions about the step-up in quality at this level.

Remember when they interviewed Nigel when the players were coming off against Coventry? He was almost in tears and just wanted to be with his players. I suspect part of that was because he knew one or two of them wouldn't be getting in the first 11 again despite their magnificent efforts. It must have been really bittersweet for him.

But onwards and upwards we go. The Euros start today and it's time for the armchair pundits (of whom I'm one) to find us some new players with scant regard for wages or transfer fees.

It has been rumoured that Davies will join Houghton at Norwich. However Norwich are not that well off and I think we could nick this. Davies a great player although he is left footed thus Seabourne could be on his way. We will be in the market for a right sided centre back with some pace. I think Martin is going to Palace to gain more experience. I also think some one will come the other way either Zaha a pacy winger or Clyne. All prehaps the pair of them. Clearly Nigel will bring in players who will fit into our style play. It is also important that the balance of the team is right. Buying the players we need is a science. Hammond, Puncheon, Barny and Forcaste will be next. I read in the Daily Mail yesterday that it is rumoured that Chaplow is part of the Jay deal. This would be a shame as we played our best football last season when he was playing. He always plays for the shirt. I still think that we need back up for Lambert. Jay, Sharpy, Guly and Lee are all play the role of second striker.
So we need to replace Barny with a understudy for Lambert., Two centre backs a left footed and right footed centre back. I hear Chris Baird is available he also can play at right back? We need a central midfielder who has pace, a good passer of the ball, can defend our box and can score goals. Being based in Scotland two players fit the bill they are Joe Ledley and Scott Browne who is as hard as nails, a bit like Jim Steele. We need a goal keeper and Butland is a great prospect. Finally wingers are a must Ince and Zaha would be good additions and this would keep Adam on his toes, and also Adam does pick up injuries. I also expect some of our home grown players will get their chance Shaw, Stephens, and Prose-ward. My prediction is with in two years Stephen's and Shaw will be are full backs.

I would just like to wish Aaron Martin all the best for his loan spell at Crystal Palace. He is an inspiration to all aspiring young foootballers who don't get picked up by the academies. Aaron showed that with hard work, a great attitude and committment, you can still make it through less glamorous routes! I will also miss his little wave to his mates (?) who sit in the Itchen stand, which he did everytime he came out to warm up.He is a truly local lad who has made good via local kids football, Itchen College and Eastleigh F C and we should support him. Eastleigh have a fantasic youth set up under Danny Smith, so I wouldn't be suprised if some other young players find their way into the professional ranks from there. Good luck Aaron and thank you for inspiring my son and many others!
