Paine: Ex-Saint could be Roy's secret weapon
9:00am Saturday 9th June 2012 in Saints News
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
TERRY Paine believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be an important impact player for England at Euro 2012.
Legendary Saints winger Paine believes former St Mary’s star Oxlade-Chamberlain’s pace and attacking threat will make him a potentially vital weapon for manager Roy Hodgson.
“It will be limited,” said Paine, when asked what involvement he expects Oxlade-Chamberlain to have.
“I just feel that Roy Hodgson is going to set his team up in a defensive formation, with one up front and five in midfield.
“He will go with the more tried and tested in the wide areas, and certainly Theo Walcott will be one of those, with Ashley Young probably on the other flank.
“There will come a stage against the better sides where England will concede and have to chase games, and that is where Oxlade-Chamberlain could come into his own.”
Paine, a member of England’s 1966 World Cup winning squad, knows a thing or two about playing out on the wing.
Saints’ all-time record appearance holder believes Oxlade-Chamberlain has the necessary ability to be a devastating presence out wide.
But he thinks the Arsenal player’s lack of experience will be the biggest obstacle in his way this summer.
“I looked at him against Belgium (in last week’s friendly) and the first thing that came to mind was his inexperience,” said Paine.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that, certainly in the future, he will have a big role to play.
“I can see the sense in him being used as a sub, to get at and run at full backs.
“On the occasion he was allowed to do that against Belgium, he showed he has got the ability to be able to turn defenders and run free from them.”

Shame he's not there as a Saint, we were one year out in his case. No matter how good our academy and no matter how much we spend on it you won't see his quality come through often.
It's a feather in our academies hat and there will be others, we are churning out more players so law of percentages proves we have a greater chance of unveiling more gems!

Don't spread the word, but I have written to Nicola suggesting that we spot talent much earlier and put things on a more scientific basis.
If, as I expect, my idea is taken up then soon you will see the opening of the Saints Soccer Sperm Bank.
The club will pay world class players such as Messi, Rooney and Lambert for a 25 cubic mm sample of the old John Thomas yoghurt which will then be frozen and banked. It will then be used to fertilize eggs bought from leading female athletes/tennis players etc.
Before long the exciting future of our club will be on full view in a large St Marys laboratory displaying hundreds of test tubes each containing an embryonic cloned saints star.
Of course sperm and eggs will be carefully matched to produce ideal players best equipped for various positions eg Jos Hooiveld/Fatima Whitbread for big strong centre backs (no doubt you can imagine your own ideal combinations).
I've not yet had a reply from Nicola so he's obviously not back from his holiday yet.

Arsenal's top players have gone to Man City because of the lure of big money and international recognition.
Sadly I don't think we will ever hang onto great prospects until e can fill a large stadium and be consistently in the top six.
England managers won't pick players from the lower reaches of the premier league and clubs below the top six can't pay the wages to keep their home grown players. Sad. The Bosman ruling deregulated football in favour of the rich clubs and the best players.
Scarce resources (large amounts of money) acquire scarce resources (highly talented players).

The hit and miss nature of our academy production is inefficient and entirely unneccessary in this modern age.

Ronnie Corbett and Paula Radcliffe would give a similar result. Or any combination of those four people would give very interesting results. Male and female combinations that is.

I dont know about other Saints fans but I'm getting really p****d off to keep reading about this kid in the echo, get over it he got off the bus, therefore of no more interest to us.
It is also of interest as there may well be more money due to us, as a condition of the sale to Arsenal, based on England international appearances.

According to the Evening News he is a Portsmouth ace. We have a slightly better claim than them. England will not win this tournament (without a big run of luck), but it would be good if players like Theo and Alex get a chance to show their potential for the World Cup.

Sounds to me like the kind of story an agent might plant to increase pressure on NA to give better terms.
And all the worries about his not having sealed the deal yet; JR only got back from Mexico on Thursday and spent two days in Southampton since then, which suggests he's hardly being dragged here against his will. (That news is from the BBC website).
As for all the people saying he won't want to move south...I'm from the Yorkshire branch of Cloggieland and it didn't take much to get me to move here to the subtropical paradise that is Southampton. Given the choice between that or Liversoddingpool, it's no contest.
I predict that we'll get him. And I'm NEVER wrong. Just ask my wife.
