Saints complete Rodriguez signing

Jay Rodriguez Jay Rodriguez

SAINTS have completed the £7m signing of Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez.

The 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year-deal at St Mary's.

The fee smashes Saints' previous record transfer, when they paid £4m to Derby for midfielder Rory Delap in 2001.

Southampton's bid for the player was accepted last month, but they had to wait for him to return from a holiday in Mexico before completing the deal.

Rodriguez landed back in England on Thursday and traveled south for talks, before passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

The highly-rated forward came through the ranks at Turf Moor and, in the last two years, had blossomed into one of the Championship's most sought-after strikers.

During the most recent campaign, he scored 21 times for the Clarets, while he netted 15 goals in the previous season.

The signing ends Saints manager Nigel Adkins' year-long pursuit of the player.

The club tried to prise Rodriguez away from Burnley last summer, but their approaches were resisted by the Turf Moor board.

However, the situation changed during this off-season, with the front man about to enter the final year of his contract.

That led Burnley to agree to cash in on the player.

Rodriguez told Saints' official website: "As an outsider, you look at the club from where it started, and the drive they have to move up the leagues in quick succession is amazing.

"The sky is the limit. You see how good the players are at the club. They want to push on even higher, and carry on the way they're going."

Where did the Echo get the fee from? It's not been mentioned on the OS, is it just based on paper talk? Just curious how we know that it's broken the record fee. Should be a good signing and will give us something different to what we already have.

Fantastic first signing of the summer - I wonder who will be next?
We know a goalkeeper is required after releasing Bart, a central defender after Martin going to Palace, and perhaps a ball winning midfielder with pace, an eye for a pass and goal! Right back also required I think - there are some young prospects out there - Klyne seems to be on the radar!
Getting greedy now...but think big and we may just get who we want.

Great news welcome Jay, and it seems Chaplow was not part of the deal, which is also good news. I have a feeling that 7 million is not the fee we paid for him. As I have been saying in previous posts we don't disclose what we pay for players. We have put the marker down on our intensions to sign top rate young players. I wonder if Ince will follow this week. Aitkins has a master plan and it is to get in early and sign the cream, while other managers eyes are on the European championships.

Checked what they were saying on Burnleys website they would only say it was undislosed fee. Also they said he only had one year left on is contract. We seem to have a colony of ex Burnley players, Chappers, Fox, Cork and Jay. I wonder if our Chairmans cunning plan is to buy players with only a year left on their deals. Now that would be good financial planning.

Rest easy, you are not in a parallel universe and very soon I'll be able to prove it.

The answer to all this time issue lies in a calculation not yet made even by Einstein - the exact speed of dark.

Once I illuminate this mystery all that speed of light stuff will be shown to be a blind alley.

It will also debunk a lot of other scientific heros - showing, for example, that if Darwin was correct cats would have been able to use a tin opener ages ago. More usefully, it will also reveal that the rings round Saturn are composed almost entirely of lost airline luggage.

It will also cast an entirely new insight into making future predictions based on past experience - even in the most complex situations. For example, if you strap a slice of buttered toast to a cat's back and then drop it from a high window - which way up is it likely to land?

Unfortunately, I won't be revealing my new equation on here for some time. The last time I passed one of my ideas on to blabbermouth mates in the pub within six months Microsoft announced Windows.

With regard to Saints, of course Nigel already knows the stuff dreams are made of - but I will be able to show him the dreams stuff is made of.

So do I!

I'll be watching it in a pub with some English and some French mates.

Alas, whilst hope springs eternal (something to do with the higher the fewer, I believe), it has the nasty habit of falling to earth like a lead balloon whenever England kick a football in anger.

So, more important than the question as to whether England have a chance, is who else will Saints sign this month and where will the other French friendly take place? I guess the options are:
1a) a box-to-box midfield general
b) 2 classy centre-backs.
c) a top-draw goalie and/or
d) a nippy wideman or two.

2a) Strasbourg
b) Strasbourg or
c) Strasbourg

St Retford says...

I've been slightly underwhelmed by the supposedly top teams in the Euros so far. Spain, Italy and the Netherlands were all a bit meh. And this is dangerous because it makes me think England have got half a chance so, once again, I'm going to get my hopes up to have them cruelly dashed.

Still, it doesn't matter if it doesn't go to plan because Big Brother is AMAZING this year. Honestly, is anyone else watching it?

Could end up quite confusing with the Davis/Davies might as well bring back Kevin Davies and sign Sean Davis and Simon Davies whilst we are at it... Then again maybe not :)
How about getting in Dickie Davies? And isn't there a few David Davis's out there somewhere?

Top Goal scorers in the Championship last season, 1st Lambert, 3rd Rodriguez, joint 4th Sharp. Who do they play for now? Oh yes SOUTHAMPTON.

There is a saying in sales 'if you do the same this year as you did last year you will get the same results.'

Awesome thought .

should be scoring at least 6 goals every game.

Euros? - I Love England but I'm afraid to say to the Denmark/Greece narrative straw clutchers that we'll get our ar5es handed to us tonight - hope I'm wrong!

I think given your devtion to the Saints they should definately go to Strasbourg! Best book next pre season in New Zealand though - the nightwatchmen deserve it!
Definately need more pace and potency in the midfield and back -up for Jose and Hoover - are any of our Saints at the Euros?
England to go all the way - Chelski, Mersey 'B', Manure, Arsenil and ManC all knackered and we get em in our first 5 games 15 points, ta very much! That's a point - isn't the fixture list this week?? To t'interweb!

I've been thinking this for some time. I reckon you could make at least two top quality boybands from our squad.

It's worth bearing in mind, should we ever be looking for additional revenue streams.

Don't get your hopes up Stras. Nigel won't the team rushing about in a cloud of garlic breath and I know for a fact the players aren't at all keen on women with moustaches.

Moustaches? Take that back, sir. It is an undisputed fact* that all French women look like either Audrey Tatou or Juliette Binoche and they spend all their time smoking, drinking black coffee and having affairs. They're brilliant.

Hope so - I was at the game in Lisbon 8 years ago, by far the most painful international I've been to. Also, it took us an hour to find a boozer after the game.

Problem is that the current trend (like Spain) is to pack the midfield and start without any recognise strikers, it sounds daft but has been effective.

I know Lisbon pretty well. So, next time you're at a match there (probably Sainmts vs. Benfica in the Champions League), I'll give a few hints about the best parts of town for a good post-match p.up. However, the city thrives on one of it's two local teams winning and, when we win at the Estádio da Luz, only the Sporting fans will be out enjoying themselves.

Strange. The French say it's Portuguese women that are moustachioed. My experience suggests otherwise.

Anyway, I have to agree with you here Retford, if there's one redeeming feature of this place, it's the women. Alas, it always seems to be their ugly sister who I get to teach.

So do I. I know times have changed but while the quality of the defenders has improved, the production of the ball has, too. Heading a ball now must be a fair bit easier today. Yet, if any of our strikers get close to his top-flight scoring record, they'll have done well.

She was extremely untroubled by Immac shall we say. Could this be as a result of French DNA, skunt female hygiene or some terrible hybrid?
