Saints to revamp St Mary's?
11:25am Wednesday 20th June 2012 in Saints News
An artist's impresion of the revamped St Mary's
SAINTS have released artist’s impressions that appear to show possible plans for a St Mary’s Stadium expansion.
The drawings were contained on a DVD given to fans who have renewed their season tickets.
They look to show extensions to the Kingsland, Northam and Chapel stands, with a fresh frontage on the stadium.
A new building is also attached to the back of what appears to be the Chapel end in the drawings.
The designs are included on a DVD which features a review of the last three campaigns, as well as a selection of interviews.
Fans shouldn’t get too excited yet, though.
Rumours of a possible St Mary’s expansion have been circulating since Markus Liebherr’s takeover of the club was completed in 2009.
But no plans have been lodged with Southampton City Council, and Saints themselves have not so much as mentioned the artist’s impressions on their website.
The drawings were also featured under the hardly-definitive heading “our future?” in the DVD.
Saints are unlikely to consider putting any expensive plans in motion unless they can safely establish themselves as a high-flying Premier League club.
They would also need to be confident of a season ticket base that is both big enough and loyal enough to warrant the initial costs and sustain the necessary crowds to make an expansion viable.
While attendances last season were impressive, Saints’ average St Mary’s crowd was still nearly 6,000 below the ground’s current capacity.

Needs to be done quite frankly, we've got to be ambitious and this is the way to go. Income in the future will need to come from sales and extra seats, even if at reduced ticket prices is the way forward.
COYR build it and we will come

Spending money in the hope that more space will somehow fill itself would be a very odd decision. I'd rather there was a struggle for tickets every match than overspending.
You only have to look down the M27 to see the end result of overreaching in the pursuit of some future pie-in-the-sky hopes.

Have I ever mentioned that I bloody love Nicola Cortese? He's said he can only imagine spending top wages on truly top class international players once we've got a stadium big enough to pay for them. This stadium is a big deal and will take us from mid Premiership to top top six.

It's a drawing. It has pretty colours, looks super cool and was included to inspire faith in the fans for the future investment in the club.
Remember it was part of a season ticket package freeby. Nothing more was said.
The Echo rightly points out there is nothing lodged with the council. This would be a major development and it would take years to put in place.
In addition we all know NC plays his cards close to his chest and is one crafty dude. I think he will enjoy this speculation as it is stirring up debate and interest which is exactly what he would want. It's all good publicity designed to attract supporters and get the building developers all excited and sharpened up ready with bids for the work.
Shrewd NC..Shrewd
I reckon he does have plans for ground expansion. But we all know we will find out when NC wants us to find out. That's OK with me, better to have a thought out reality than a failed pipe dream.

No harm in getting plans approved for a future time, but I feel consolidation on the pitch is our key focus right now. It will take a few years to establish ourselves as a force again at this level and then expansion may be more viable, Mr Cortese is smart enough to know not to rush these things.

Never shall his name be uttered didn't build the original SMS big enough for the same reasons as stated about selling enough tickets first then once we were doing well he said it would cost too much to build when adding an extra 10k seats originally would have been much less. Lesson: more ambition in the infrastructure would have made us even stronger.
I like Cortese's ambition and this is where we need to be. We have massive potential. Comparing spending on this to the bunch down the road is also futile as they spent more on players, which if they'd invested in a stadium development and youth policy, they may not be in the situation they are in now. Anyway, this has nothing to do with P*****y at all and everything to do with a team who is going places :)

We went into Admin because Crouch and Wild spent 7m we didn't have and then failed to get the investment they promised and we lost in the playoffs. The returning Lowe tried slashing costs to the bone and did reduce borrowings but not by enough to satisfy Barclays who put the club into Admin over a 5m overdraft. SMS had nothing to do with it.

Football gags don’t always work, mind. The head teacher at my daughter’s school got suspended a while back for unknown reasons. (Well, I say “unknown” – obviously I started a rumour that he’s a paedo because you’ve got to and everyone’s been taking this as gospel, but the ‘actual’ reasons are still unknown) and it was announced today that he’s returning to the school. “Bugger me,” I said to the mums at the school gates, “That’s the most surprising comeback since Jason Puncheon.”

Saints fans need to get realistic, you did well last year and even though I'm not a fan I want them to do well. You got relegated from the premiership in 2005 with at least 12 internationals in the squad with the likes of, lundekvam, crouch, phillips, delap, niemi, le saux and the manager that everyone wanted as England manager! Staying up for the first couple of seasons would be a great achievement, I do hope they do because it's great for the city. Also too an earlier comment about the club of course Saints are still in dept 99% of football clubs are Mr liebherr didn't just hand over 30 million as a present his family will want that back, plus don't think Cortese is good for the club he is trying to get as much money out of the club as he can before he sells, fact!

Saints never had a CVA, so didn't pay pence in the pound. All debts were paid. The mortgage was paid up in the same way as if anyone paid their mortgage early....saves a fortune. I know because I settled mine...it's not illegal or dodgy. The club is owned outright by the Leihberrs, so they can sell it of course...but they're spending an awful lot of money for people intent on a sale.

For the people above saying that it's a great idea, shouldn't we fill the current stadium first?
Spending money in the hope that more space will somehow fill itself would be a very odd decision. I'd rather there was a struggle for tickets every match than overspending.
You only have to look down the M27 to see the end result of overreaching in the pursuit of some future pie-in-the-sky hopes.
Pretty much sold out every game!!

The SKUNTS are here,
The Skunts are there,
The fcuking Skunts are everywhere,
There down rat holes,
There down the pipes,
The poor little Skunts are covered in sh!te,
It's not their fault that they dont know,
The difference between sh!te and snow,
They think their ground is something grand,
Pity it was'nt built on quicksand,
It would not take long to swallow that sh!te,
Then the world would be rid of the parasite,
arthur dalyrimple is filled with hate,
He cant even get his facts straight,
Were on the up,
There on the down,
Its really not worth listening to the clown.

S Pance wrote:This is St.Marys stadium. This pic shows the stadium after it has been expanded. So you think that they will knock down curent ground to build new one. They will build upper tiers along 3 of the stands. so yes this is a pic of st marys and yes i have watched the dvd today after my season ticket arrived.
This is NOT a picture of St Marys..it is a picture of a proposed new stadium to be built on the land Saints own.
Plans have not yet be submitted, but bear in mind that when they do it will be EASTLEIGH planning office that deal with it, thus it won't show up in a search of the Southampton Council planning website..
