Southampton's desire to sign Jack Butland may need record bid

Jack Butland on England duty Jack Butland on England duty

SAINTS may have to splash out a British record fee for a goalkeeper if they are to land Jack Butland.

Birmingham have already rejected a £6m offer from Saints for the 19- year-old and are adamant they will only sell one of the most highlyrated youngsters in the country for a massive price.

That may have to rival the £9m Sunderland paid to Hearts to make Craig Gordon the most expensive British keeper in history.

Whether Saints will wish to part with such a high fee for a keeper whose only first team experience is a loan spell at League Two Cheltenham remains to be seen.

Butland made headlines recently when, despite not having made an appearance for his club yet, he was called into Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2012 after an injury to Norwich’s John Ruddy.

Saints will sign a keeper this summer having released Bartosz Bialkowski at the end of his contract.

But, with such large sums of money being spoken about, it appears they may be looking for someone to take over from Kelvin Davis rather than find him a new understudy.

Signing a young keeper may mean they play second fiddle for Davis, pictured right, for the time being with a view to being his long term successor.

However, in Butland’s case, it is understood he would only leave Birmingham if he was to get first team football elsewhere.

Butland is believed to be quite content at Birmingham as he is virtually guaranteed to be the club’s number one next season, at what is a very tender age for a keeper, with the Blues set to sell Ben Foster to West Brom.

The Blues are on something of a charm offensive with their fans having failed to get promoted and losing manager Chris Hughton to Norwich.

They have appointed Lee Clark as their new boss and are keen not to be seen to be losing their best assets, hence why they will only sell for a fee they could justify to their fans – which probably means over the top.

Clark said: “He’s (Butland) got a huge part to play in the future of this club.

“The club are very lucky to have the standard of keepers that we have on the books.

“Everyone can see that Jack’s an international star of the future and it would be nice for him to do that with Birmingham City.”

He added: “Jack and Nathan (Redmond) are two fantastic young players that Peter Pannu has already come out about, in his words, and said ‘eye-popping’ bids and what he means by that is crazy bids, so it would have to be a fantastic amount of money.

“The people that get involved with that would deal with it, but it would take big, big numbers – huge numbers.

“So those lads will be part of the group that start the season because they are fantastic young players.”

Clark is not too backward in coming forwards though when it comes to Butland’s ability, which has earned him a place in the Team GB Olympic squad and is what is attracting Saints and covetous glances from other top flight clubs, all of whom had scouts at his last game for Cheltenham last season.

“Jack can push Joe Hart all the way to be the number one for his country,” said Clark.

“The Olympics, it’s great kudos for the club, it’s great for the lad to have that opportunity to compete in such a fantastic arena. You can never stop that for a young player.

“We are all delighted and proud for Jack.

Hopefully he has a successful time and then comes back to us because he will be super-confident.

“But that’s football.

You can’t hide good players, just like you can’t hide bad players.

“They’re always in the shop window.”

I don't like this. He's only played at League 2 level! How can anyone actually be sure he's any good? Because Brum say he is?? Not worth the gamble in my opinion. We should have loaned out Bart and bought Casper schmeichel in my opinion. I do trust in NA and NC though.

Young expensive keepers have a habit of not fulfilling their potential.
Unless he can be bought by paying in installments based on achievements leave well alone, let one of the big boy's take a chance.
There are plenty of goalkeepers out there good enough and better value, Craig Gordon for instance, available free I believe.

Paying £6 million for Butland would be handing over the proceeds from the sale of 10,000 season tickets - on top of the 12,000 season tickets proceeds already paid for Rodriguez. Given where we've been in recent years the mind boggles.

It's also very difficult for us to judge this when we don't know how much the club are prepared o spend in total pre-season ie if we buy Butland will it be at the expense of other needed reinforcements?

The only thing we can be pretty sure about is that Nicola is no mug and will know exactly what he's doing.

Nigel knows quite a lot about goalkeepers. Let's trust his judgement on how much Butland is worth.

All I would say is that £6m on a top keeper who, if he lives up to his potential, will be between our sticks for the best part of the next 20 years is, actually, a massive bargain. It's the most important position on the pitch and worth investing in.

Completely agree with these comments. Would be a huge gamble. In what I think is going to be a hard season to re-establish ourselves in the Premiership the money would be better spent in finding a "mid-field general" (hopefully NC/NA have found one and he is under wraps!!). The one lesson from the Euros is control mid-field, control the game. Saints have enough firepower to trouble most, if not all, Premiership defences subject to decent service from mid-field.

Totally agree with above posts. Scott Carson, Chris Kirkland and Richard Wright, 3 keepers that spring to mind who were supposedly talented young keepers. Liverpool spent big bucks on 2 of these keepers and they never fulfilled there potential. However, Liverpool already had Reina between the sticks, would be difficult for any keeper to be picked in front of Reina. Man City got it right with Joe Hart, they spotted his potential early bought him for a decent price and loaned him out which helped his development. Problem is I don't think Saints are in a position to spend £6mil+ for keeper to send out on loan.

far too much for a young keeper who was not 1st choice for his club.now an experienced keeper with the relevant premier league games behind him, fine, goalkeepers tend to improve with age and top keepers will play and perform well late into their thirties.
if we take this lad and give him the games and experience will he still be around in 2/3 seasons will he not be looking to move to a"" bigger club""

I heard something recently from Birmingham's goalkeeping coach saying he believed Butland to have the potential to be better than Joe Hart, who he worked with during his time at Birmingham. If true, (and not him doing a favour for his employers to up the price), 6-9m is a good investment and one would think there is some truth in it given his call up to the England squad. 'The Saints Way' - To develop from youth up and get them all playing the same attractive passing style of football. I for one am very happy for our club to be the England youth team and eventual England first team - Works for Barcelona / Spain. . .

The most Important word "IF" for that sort of money you should "KNOW"....I wonder how Kelvin feels....he has got more experience than Buckland and it seem he is to be dropped to second slot...or are we to waste that sort of money on a 2nd keeper to put on the bench???? They know they're going to sell him at some point, be it this year or next, so they would say that. He certainly sounds good, but I don't see us paying 9m for him, BBC report we didn't even bid 6m...

I don't think we'd still be reported as being in the mix for him if we couldn't afford it! Usually no smoke without fire - even in our case with Signor Cortese - and whilst I know nothing about the lad's ability, you have to ask yourself, would he have been called into the England set-up unless he was already considered to be very capable.

I still think we'll end up with a young up and coming foreigner though!

'If' is the middle word in life and it's the whole skill of buying players. Unless you can afford to go around buying established greats then you're always going to have to take a bit of a risk in finding emerging talent.

To be honest, I've no idea how good Butland is but it's very exciting that we have a management team in place with a vision of a young, skillful, mainly English group of players and is prepared to back that by handing over serious amounts of cash for pure quality. We're not 'making-do' or doing things on the cheap any more.

Unless there's a load of money available I'd prefer a cheaper known quantity as back up to Kelv and serious money slashed on a quality midfielder and central defender.

On Butland...I remember a local keeper who went over to play for Norwich one season, started the first game of the season, had seven put passed him and was kindly sent home on compassionate grounds.

Point being, the keeper IS a rather important part of the puzzle, but as many have said, not the only one to be discovered.

to be honest its not the money i worry about, if we have got the money to take a punt and thats what NC NA want so be it, i am concerned that if we get him and put him straight into the starting lineup and he makes a mistake or two, will he be lambasted like bartosz was after the blackpool game. that could ruin a promising players career before its started. we saw what nerves did to bartosz, who i thought could have been a decent backup. time will tell with butland and lets hope if hes the right player for saints the right deal can and will be done.

Still no confirmation from SFC as to what we offered so this is probably Brum trying to push up the bids.

Walk away Nicola, there will be other good keepers for less than this. In any case the lad should be screaming to join us and I'm not hearing anything along those lines.

Alicescat also confirms this is bad business, we should stick our noses in the air and walk proudly away from this "deal".

I guess the plan (if indeed we are interested in buying him) is for this to be a season of transition, with Kelvin starting as number one but showing him the ropes in a master/apprentice way so that by the end of the season the roles will have swapped and Butland will start and Kelvin will be the understudy.

It's a bit like in Star Wars when Ewan McGregor is doing work experience with Liam Neeson but then that funny bloke with the double-ended light sabre comes along and kills Liam Neeson to death and suddenly Ewan McGregor is in charge.

How many players stay clubs for 5-6 years? Let alone nearly 20 years.

If it goes above £6 million I hope we don't buy him. Not at 19 years old.

However, I do think this should be a transition year for Kelvin and I would welcome a younger keeper with more agility. If a player like that earned us 6 more points over the course of a season it would be worth it.

It is nice to see a "real red" (darker red) in the shirt instead on the "slightly orange tone" of red that we have used for a few years.
Here are our previous kits to compare :-
http://www.historica
lkits.co.uk/Southamp
ton/Southampton.htm
.
A very MINOR issue which could have made the shirts even better is if they had made the "white stripe" slightly thicker, say 1/4 inch instead of 1/8 inch.
.
Anyhow I hope they make the players shirts out of a material that "shows up the red" under Floodlights, some "darker reds" do not.

Rubbish Kit..gutted.

I can only think that it is was a ploy to keep Ricky from going to Liverpool. Away kit looks more like a saints kit. The home kit looks like 80's Notts Forest.

Firstly must say the only thing I have to complain about as an Aussie Saint is that the new strip is revealed at 2:30am local time! Other than that, just subscribed to Foxtel for viewing the (inevitable) Saints victories over the coming season...yay!!

On Butland...I remember a local keeper who went over to play for Norwich one season, started the first game of the season, had seven put passed him and was kindly sent home on compassionate grounds.

Point being, the keeper IS a rather important part of the puzzle, but as many have said, not the only one to be discovered.

Having seen Stoke's and Sunderlands new kit, we had the potential to have the best red and white kit in the league.
Isn't this kit only for a year? I hope we go back to red and white stripes next year as we contnue in the PL.
.
Reading signed Guthrie and Podg..... I am sure we will have a couple more signings soon. I think £6m for a reserve keeper is to uch as we need kelv's experience this year in the PL.

Brum's owner (~20%) has stuffed that club, his funds have been frozen, he has been charged with money laundering.
Their finances are at least as bad as ours ever were, their parent company has delayed releasing it's finances (and was raided a couple of months ago) so... they are in the same type of situation we were in 5-6 seasons ago.
They do need to sell, they will have a figure in mind, Butland alone will not be worth it. Would we look at getting Redmond in too??

On the new kit. I am not so sure yet, though I do love the complete red shorts and socks. I am liking the white one more, and I always thought our away kit should hold something of the home kit even if it is trimmings. So many other clubs do this, and its cool.

Has anyone seen it in person so to speak? What sort colour red is it? Blood red?

Why is the goalkeepers shirt left out. What he wearing? Is it nice?

Bottom line is I think I may grow to like it, and maybe a lesson to learn is that Sweden was wearing it in the Euros just in a different colours. Umbro have not made a unique kit for us. I hope they now put our shirts up and down the country especially in London where all the tourist come to buy Prem shirts! As a club we always lost out on that revenue!!

End of the day it still fits with COYR!

I can see us having a third kit of all black with red trim like the current kits, so that we could then mix and match with the 2 new kits for when we play the likes of Man Utd. As shirts to wear with jeans, they will probably look a lot better.

This would have been better I think.

I’ve just taken a look at the shirt, call me old fashioned but I prefer more traditional variations of stripes. It looks good, but I don’t think it is particularly representative of Saints roots.
Nearly as important in what can make or break a shirt is the sponsor logo. Ours look OK, who can forget classic Skunt blunders like Jobsite or that silly red heart.

Sorry. New kit looks like something Barnsley might have worn in League 2 in the 90s. Horrible. Red shorts as well. No way! Only redeeming features are badge and socks. The sash kit was OK because it was 125 year anniversary one off retro. I might buy the new away shirt but will stick with last year’s home shirt.

I agree with every word. Where is Kirkland these days, for example? There loads of good goalies out there. If someone really good came along, the manager would want. Don't forget one of the clubs Shilton played for was Saints. Buckland is right to stay where he is, Saints would be wrong to pay a lot of money for him.

I think the plan is to alternate each year between the stripes and something a bit mental ie this/the sash. Those that don't like it can have normal service resumed next year and those that like a bit of a change can enjoy this. Personally I think it's ace and am about to buy two for my kids.

As you said, not a very good translation but I get the gist. AND once again a player that no one else has noticed and we are in there ready to bid!
It has been picked up though and is now appearing on one or two other sites. Perhaps we should all go schtum and let the Don do the business in quiet !

Fulham and QPR are also said to be interested.

One report said he was having talks over the weekend.

Also, depending where you read it, he's a left back and/or a midfielder.

He was in Holland's pre-Euro 36-man squad but didn't make the cut.

Okay, fair point, shtum, shtum, ..... ssssssshhhhhhh, shtum, shtum!!!!!!!!!

ps Sorry I do not like the new kit, absolutely nothing to do with Saints heritage. We play in some version of red and white stripes, not a cross between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool. Never though I'd react this badly to such a thing but really Nocola what were you thinking of, and in our first season back in the premier League. Whichever marketing company came up with it should be shot. Second only in stupidity and bad judgement to Cardiff going from blue to red. Good grief

Well for once I'm playing the curmudgeon, fans will always buy the teams colours, I just think these are misconceived and an even more blatant marketing ploy than usual, ie how many different visions of red and white stripes can they come up with, now theyve extended their palette, absolutely nothing to do with red and white.

Nail on head when you say "how many versions of red n white stripes can they come up with"...I loved last seasons shirt and wouldn't have wanted to have seen a mish-mash update to it. Assuming the fact that our first season back in the prem had to be exploited by marketing a new shirt, a radical change to a tasteful shirt (imo) seems like the right way to go. The stripes will be back...fact. In the meantime...COYR

Hi PiS,
I looked for pompey fans in SE Spain when we played you last season on the telly.... sadly there were none.
The Almeria Saints Fan Club numbered around 30.
Watched the return game live in Koh Samui again pompey fans were out numbered 6-1.
It seems that the blue few are becoming fewer by the year all over the world.
Enjoy Gibraltar Pis, It could be the last time you see your club.

it would appear that the blue few are in danger of becoming an endangered species, and as such could be afforded all sorts of protection e.g. no hunting or shooting out of season,no sending of a human being in a saints shirt into their lair's (baiting).
they could become such a minority that the term lovingly used by saints fans "skunt"could even be deemed rascist.
official thoughts on this are that it could be very short lived, once the "skunts" are liquidated, and the human race has completely forgotten they ever existed, probably within days

i see the poopey few have won an award worth £30,000 . how three football fans from poopey can win anything these day is beyond me, but they are the biggest cheats in football.
anyway the cash can only be spent in three ways.
1) free ticket for kids.
2)improvements to farton park for disabled persons
3) a statue
now take no1) free tickets for kids ,inflicting such damage to young minds is inhuman and cruel and should be stamped out .
no2) improvments for the disabled, i may be wrong but i think £30,000 is not enough, it would take more than that to demolish farton park, but the local charities are willing to have a whip round as a gesture of goodwill
no3) a statue???? of what ?just an idea but a £30,000 turd would still be a turd wouldn't it? statue gets my vote

Nonetheless it would be quite nice at half time at home matches if we could have greyhounds chase round the pitch perimeter after a tracked lure consisting of a miniature toy skunt. Imagine the cheer at the end of every race as the winner gets the skunt.

Haim? With 30k, I'd have thought they would be able to create one of those group sculptures comprising every one of their greats and call it something dumb like 'In memorium to the best fans in the world - EVER, and the greatest club in history'.

Mind you, a sculpture of Bell-end Westwood playing with his ding-a-ling, Jimmy Dickenson in baggy shorts, Linvoy Primus holding an empty charity tin, Kanu goal hanging, Alan Biley clearing the bar from 3 yards, Alan Knight fumbling a back pass and (like one of those talkie action men with valcro hair I had as a boy), Steve Claridge with a vocal pull-cord that fans can tug on when they want to hear him talking b0ll0cks doesn't really add up to much, does it?

Mind you, a sculpture of Bell-end Westwood playing with his ding-a-ling, Jimmy Dickenson in baggy shorts, Linvoy Primus holding an empty charity tin, Kanu goal hanging, Alan Biley clearing the bar from 3 yards, Alan Knight fumbling a back pass and (like one of those talkie action men with valcro hair I had as a boy), Steve Claridge with a vocal pull-cord that fans can tug on when they want to hear him talking b0ll0cks doesn't really add up to much, does it?
I'd go and see it.
and the whole thing set on quick sand so they can slowly see that disappear, like poopey, and all that would be left is the string and steve claridge asking where did it all go wrong

now take no1) free tickets for kids ,inflicting such damage to young minds is inhuman and cruel and should be stamped out .

It was done on biggest percentage of your fans to tweet so once two skunts did they were bound to win.

That's where the new shirts missed a trick. A nice trio of yellow streaks down the sleeves would have finished them off nicely :)

... amd with that, Torres has finished the Italians off nicely.

Just think, if Rickie and Adam were Spanish, they'd have won 8-0.

Over all, a number of great performances from some of the old guard. How about this for an over-30s Euro 2012 side:

Buffon
Jacobsen, Sharonov, Terry (hate to admit that), Evra
Pirlo, Gerrard, Rosický
Ibrahimović, Shevchenko, Di Natale

With the likes of Casillas, Cole, Karagounis, Parker, Tymoshchuk, Alonso, Arshavin, Kuyt and Klose on the bench.

Makes me want to scrub up my boots and beg NA for a trial.

Either the Echo hasn't heard that Nigel took Rickie Lambert's wife hostage at knifepoint yesterday and demanded £32.50, a cheese and tomato pizza and a plane to Tonga - or it simply didn't happen.

they now will be very lucky to survive due to not being able to reduce the over the top wage bill they are stuck with because they overpaid for players and did not include relegation clauses.

yeh apparently won it in 1939.
don't know if it's true but rumour has it they actually started w.w.2 to enable them to hold on to it.
the other rumour was the F.A. asked for it back and poopey told them to foock off, they thought they had bought it.

The question to really ask here is can Saints develop Butland further and make him a better keeper? The structure at Saints points to us developing players and making them the best they can be...it was clear with Bart that he will be a very good league 1/2 goalkeeper but no Premiership. Why would Butland have gone to the Euros over Stockdale if he wasn't any good and why would he be in the GB squad?

The return on the investment with young English players is such that you are very rarely going to lose your money on them. I'm sure Cortese is the king of negotiations will provide the best outcome for all parties. £7m upfront and maybe an extra £1m when he reaches 10 full England caps.

Very unfair old chap or chapesse. I feel sure that real Portsmouth football fans would not have liked to have seen Southampton FC be liquidated, as I am sure true Southampton football fans would not like to see that happen to Portsmouth, or any other club for that matter. What goes on in the boardroom is not the fans' fault. The fact that you refer to Portsmouth as "Poopey" would indicate that you may be devoid of rational thinking. I have never called Pompey fans skates, or fishy things, and never will. I am a football fan first, and a Saints fan second.
