Southampton reach deal over transfer of Dutch defender Alexander Büttner from Vitesse

Daily Echo: Alexander Büttner Alexander Büttner

Vitesse Arnhem have said they have reached an agreement with Saints over the transfer of left back Alexander Büttner.

The Dutch club posted a statement on their website this afternoon.

The Eredivise side claim Saints today submitted an improved offer for the left back, meeting Vitesse's evaluation of the 23-year-old.

It is understood Büttner is now trying to sort out personal terms with Saints before sealing the move.

Fulham, QPR and Werder Bremen have also been tracking the player.

Buttner has made his name with the Eredivisie outfit at left back, even making the provisional Netherlands squad for Euro 2012.

But he has also played as a winger for Vitesse, while he came through the ranks at Ajax as a more central attacking player.

Vitesse have been resigned to losing the player this summer, with Buttner having just one year left on his current contract.

He has been allowed to travel to England to visit interested clubs, including Fulham and QPR as well as Saints.

German side Werder Bremen are also interested, but Buttner has made it clear from the start that St Mary’s is his choice.

ML

MC

Guly

There are 14 out of 23 spots complete in my mind. With 7 additions needed over the next three season to have a team assured of retaining its place in the premier league every season.

I'd also keep Chaplow, Butterfield and De Ridder until better players are found.

I'd listen to serious offers for everyone else.

Right side of midfield, a central defender, 'keeper and a central midfielder are musts for the start of this season.

Good to see the four kids join the first team squad, they'll hopefully fill a few of the slots over the next few seasons.

Really excited about this one, the moment any tiny piece of doubt creeps into my mind about signings Adkins and *see user name* seem to come up with the goods. He looked around Fulham, he looked around QPR, he choose Saints! In the preliminary squad for Holland, i've heard some fans saying that he should have started for them. He's ambitious, he's hungry, by reading his interview it seems that he wants to play for the name on the front of the shirt and not the name on the back. Welcome to Southampton FC Alexander Buttner, i think you'll soon become a favourite.

Don't see a lot on this I would disagree with. Cannot see Saints changing that many players though as i feel Nigel will be loyal to his squad. I think Hammond is under rated and is our engine at times. New left back a great signing

I'm not suggesting that much change this year or next, but those are the ones whose contracts I'd keep topped up.

The others I'd slowly offload as "Buttner Level" players are picked up by the bus.

Don't be surpirsed to see Buttner and Fox playing in the same side with Harding kept as back up. both can play upfield or defence and they can inter change and cover. This would see Adam move to the right of midfield. Which may actually give our flanks the balance they lacked at times last season.
We have Morgan, Jack and RC challenging for centre midfield, Need a strong tackling playmaker for centre midfield imo. Cover for at least 1 centre back and a second keeper. As a bare minimum.

If this deal is sealed next week it is a good bit of business. The future looks not that great for the likes of Dickson and Harding. All we need is a central midfielder, centre back, left midfielder, goal keeper, ( Possibly Mcgregor from Rangers). We could do with a tall striker as back up for Lambert. I think a few will be on their way next week. Barney, Dickson, Harding, and Punch to go. I see we are supposed to be interested in Jamie Mackie.Nigel will want to get some players in before the training camp in Switzerland.

I've heard from a Dutch work colleague that Buttner isn't a particularly good player. He was part of the Ajax youth squad, but didn't do too well, so they got rid of him, but that might of all changed, and from looking at his stats he scored about 5 goals last season, half of what he has scored in his career total. But am gonna stay optimistic about him, and hope he lives up to his expectations at Saints.

The options this presents for Nigel are enormous. The "Southampton style" is taking shape very nicely indeed.

Yes, "just what we need". But according to JasperAG (above) we also need another eight NEEDs (as listed). Given the SKY TV windfall, we should not remain needlessly needy. Indeed, I think we can well afford two MUST-HAVEs, an ESSENTIAL and three INDISPENSIBLES - plus a DESIRABLE and a REQUISITE.

As it is rather long I won't be having INDISPENSIBLE on the back of my new shirt even if we get him. I will stick with LEE even though it's only one letter less than NEED. Nevertheless, I may score some points for myself by buying a shirt for the wife with DESIRABLE on it.

but is she ?
Fair question, Slugger and, more importantly, does she get on with Aunt Elpeth?

As for your thoughts, Confucious, surely, that would leave IRRESISTIBLE on the bench and I thought he had only agreed to sign if guarenteed to start every match.

I just hope Man City sign Sneezy, Sleepy, Dopey, Doc, Happy, Bashful and Grumpy before the 19th of August.

Anyway, what ever happened to that guy in Scotland called INVINSIBLE? He seemed to score a few.

I feel it's just what we need, i am not going to sit here and tell our Nigel were to play the boys, oh no. I am wondering though wether he is thinking of playing FOXY left mid and move A L in a more central mid field position. It gives us so many formations now, that i am really champing at the bit to sit in my season ticket seat.
You can only sit back and admire the way the club is building for the future whilst taking care of the present day. Iwas miffed when my seat went up by so much but, it does not seem quite so painfull now and come the season K O . N C and N A with a couple of bits of more magic could have completely wiped the pain away altogether.
Cant wait for next SATURDAY 'S 5 pm kick off. Just hope there are THOUSANDS like me that feel they OWE IT TO MARKUS TO BE THERE.

They haven't really got on too well since Auntie Elspeth stayed here in May. Eventually the wife told her that she needed more space and so Auntie Elspeth locked her outside all day.

My Uncle Wei told me secretly that he plays the 8mm film of his wedding to Auntie Elspeth at least once a month. He plays it backwards so he can watch himself walking out of the church a free man.

Considering that Vitesse Arnhem posted a statement on their official website saying that we have agreed a fee for Buttner I would say it isn't media driven. Have a look for yourself.

You forgot Dan Harding is still here...one of our best players last season.

Just what we need.

The blocks are slowly being cemented into place.
