FIFA to investigate Lundekvam claims

Claus Lundekvam Claus Lundekvam

FIFA's chief investigator in England will look into claims by former Southampton skipper Claus Lundekvam that he, team-mates and opposing captains were involved in betting fraud.

In an interview in Norway, Lundekvam said the players manipulated incidents such as the first throw-in for betting purposes.

The world governing body FIFA today announced they will investigate the claims.

A statement said: "FIFA is monitoring this issue and involved its chief investigator in England. Once all information is known it will be decided who is leading the investigations."

Lundekvam claimed the spot-fixing took place in Premier League matches in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

He told Norwegian TV station NRK: "It's not something I'm proud of.

"For a while we did this almost every week. We made a fair bit of money. We could make deals with the opposing captain about, for example, betting on the first throw, the first corner, who started with the ball, a yellow card or a penalty.

"Those were the sorts of thing we had influence over."

Lundekvam insisted he and his fellow players never rigged the result of a match.

He said: "The results were never on the agenda. That is something I would never have done. We were professional competitors. Even though what we did, of course, was illegal, it was just a fun thing."

Why is FIFA getting involved in this now?

Hasn't Lundekvam just repeated what Le Tissier said in his book that was published quite some time ago?

I would assume that, with Le Tissier, it was a matter for the FA. As Lundekvam was a foreign player, playing abroad, then FIFA take an interest.

Its sad but Claus has had many problems drug and drink related since retirement and I'm wondering if this is sensationalism to make some $?

Either way It is from another Southampton era one under another name I dare not utter on these boards.

A non story IMO

News Flash: a washed up footballer makes up crazy story that looks like it holds some kudos because Tiss spoke about it as a one off in his book.

Cue the papers all taking an interest and Claus getting some money.

Lundekvam has blown this up into something major. I used to like this man but how dare he drag Saints good name into the mire like this. just because he has allowed his life to go down the tubes. Nicola must be fuming.
How can he say it didn't involve match fixing and yet admit it involved timing of penalties. How can manipulation of penalties not be match fixing.
Benali has come out and denied it..said he would know if it was true. Sounds like Claus may have been up to stuff but has made it a bigger thing so he comes out better and to sell a story. He'd better not show his face round here again.

Do they think it makes them cool or something? I was disappointed with Matty but now Claus. Why can't people just keep their mouths shut. Trying to make a buck from the attention no doubt. Problem is some saints fans opinions will be changed by this and rightly so. There are a lot of ex-players thinking 'oh heck' right now. Sad for them and sad for the supporters who weren't watching a 'true' match.

Matt's referred to a one off incident that the FA looked into but decided to do nothing about it. Claus is saying that it was rife on the prem, hence FIFA looking into it.

No

So why Claus?

Its just because Tiss spoke about it...

Claus is a sick man. Addiction is a terrble thing.

This is a non story and will be dropped by FIFA as soon as they look at Claus and his history over the past 4 years

People keep asking why Claus had to say what he said, what he hoped to gain from it, even if there's a book to sell.

The point is, Claus is a pundit in Norway with an "interesting" past and when the press wanted to dig up some background on betting and match fixing they thrust the microphone in their favourite "nice guy with a bit of a dodgy background"s face. They asked and he answered. That may have been a poor choice from the Saints side of the fence, but he's been brutally honest about all the other **** he's been through so why not this as well. I guess its blown up a bit bigger than he expected.

Stupid statement? Maybe. Should he have lied when asked? I dunno. Does he have anything to gain from all this? Maybe respect for his honesty. Financial gain = Zero.

Little bit annoyed by this, this has already been said in LE TISS's book so why all of a sudden it's said now and being front page news, bit of a joke I think. It's also done no favours for us and the timing of this just a little to perfect don't you think? "now we are a prem club" and as for talk sport's Adrian durum saying the club should be demoted back to the championship is just laughable, why should the fans and club with new owners have to suffer that when we had nothing to do with it, it also does not look good on the club who are trying to sighn players and I'm sure NC is not liking all the publicity. Rant over just had to get that off my chest good old sun know why Liverpool fans won't buy that Cr#p.

If this did happen how is this any different from what the Pakistani Cricketers did? Disgraceful. Perhaps we deserve to be demoted- until this sort of thing is treated seriously and firm action is taken by the authorities it will continue and go on and on and on. Lance Armstrong allegedly, John Terry, Itailians- the list of cheaters involved in sport is endless. And its more fool for us us mugs who pay our hard earned cash at the turnstiles and then conveniently brush it over. These people desrve our derision but as long as we win, all is forgotten

anyone who has ever watched football has seen stupid results, refereeing decisions, incidents that give us good cause to suspect that skulduggery is involved in the game and that sports betting is behind it. The decisions at the top of the game lead us to believe much worse corruption is rife. The game is like the X Files... we'll never get to the truth... where are Mulder and Scully when you need them.
If some players have taken money for spot fixing then others have rigged games. It's the law of human averages. To be honest the only cases of rigging that have come to light have been through media set ups and clandestine cameras and microphones... never from the authorities.. That to me smacks that the authorities are in it up to their ears. SHAME on the lot of em. Claus, Le Tiss etc see it as harmless fun.... yep like giving kids pills in clubs it's the tip of the iceberg. I hate it through and through. When Pompey finally get wound up and offenders get jail time I'll believe that there is some honesty in the game.

Strasbourg Saint says...
8:41pm Wed 11 Jul 12

There was a game of pétanque going on in the park here in Strasbourg last Friday and I popped my head over the fence to take a peak.

I must say, I was more than a little suspicious when one garçon strode up with his pair of balls, gleaming in the sunlight, lobbed one of them skywards and failed not only to get close to the cochonnet but managed to land his silver orb way outside the entire terrain.

On route, much to the disgust of her owner, the boule caught a passing poodle smack between the eyes and, as the boule rolled gently across the road, it caused several cars to swerve their way through a red light before embedding themselves in the local boulangerie.

'Spot fixing', I thought. Then I caught sight of the culprit, he reached for his bottle of Château du Chiasse, took a gulp, swaggered violently and fell to the ground in a drunken stupor before being dragged unconcious to the side.

Turns out most of the players lost a few euros because they had bet that monsieur would stay off the plonk long enough to throw his first boule.

Left me wondering what odds I'd have got for predicting that the poodle would have been blinded.

Oh well, I guess it was more entertaining than reading the bl00dy Sun.

There's 2 ways this will go either the powers that be will sweep it under the carpet, or this will turn into a full on sh*t-storm and tarnish the reputation of the game - and the premier league big time.

I'm reminded a little of the 1919 Boston Black Sox scandal - it seems the authorities first response then was to go for a cover-up not asking too many questions preferring to preserve the good name of the sport as a whole, but eventually the story came out.

Say it ain't so Claus

I said yesterday that if FIFA get involved it will be trouble. They will be very interested in the potential for match fixing. Once you confess to the smaller crimes you open the door to being accused of much worse.

However now FIFA have expressed an interest what can they do? Interview Claus ? Where will that get them?

I doubt this will affect the club directly as everyone involved has long gone.

On reflection, unless they can get hard evidence and a whole load of confessions from players or others involved, or some other tangible proof then it will be like knitting with water.

Having mulled it over I reckon it will be a dead story in less than a week. FIFA may make some noise, but nothing will come of it.
