New keeper be warned: Kelv won't go without a fight

Kelvin Davis Kelvin Davis

Kelvin Davis has pledged to fight for his place, despite Saints’ intentions to sign at least one new keeper this summer.

The 35-year-old moved to St Mary’s six years ago and has been with the club as they dropped down to the third tier, before enjoying back-to-back promotions into the Premier League.

Davis has been named in the PFA team of the season for three successive years – twice in the League One XI and once in the Championship’s – but his place is now under threat.

Saints have already had a £6m bid for Birmingham’s Jack Butland rejected, and Nigel Adkins has now admitted they plan to sign one, and possibly two, new keepers before the transfer window shuts.

But Davis insists he is not feeling sore about the club’s search for new blood in his position.

“I’d like to think if there is something I see or a bit of advice I can give (to a rival), I would let them know if I thought they’d accept it,” he said.

“I am not too long in the tooth to accept a bit of criticism or help. I’m all for that.

“I think you’ll find with most goalkeepers – and I say most – the case is there is a good team spirit and I am all for that goalkeepers’ union.

“I am a big believer that you train as well as you can and you reach the standard that is your best possible.

“If that is not good enough to get you in the team, then so be it and good luck to the other guy. I’ve always been the same.

“As a goalkeeper there is one position, one shirt, and if I’m not good enough then that’s football.

“I’ll support the club and will continue to do so while I’m here.”

Davis will feature today as the club hosts the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup at St Mary’s, against Arsenal and Anderlecht.

Nigel Adkins could field new signings Jay Rodriguez and Steven Davis, who he insists is available despite Rangers’ objections to his international clearance, as well as Dan Seaborne.

The defender suffered serious head injuries following an assault outside a nightclub last September but is set to feature this afternoon.

“Dan has been training full on,” said Adkins. “He was back in the fold towards the end of last season.

“He has had the two weeks with us now and he will play at the weekend.”

Top man - loyal, honest and been worth a good 12 points a season in the last few campaigns. We all know loyalty is a rarity in the Premiership so give him the shirt then let the others show they can emulate him and fight for their chance. Right now Kelvin Davis represents all that is good about our club - he'll do for me!

This only my opinion and I don't want to upset all the KD fans, but he is not good enough for the premier league.
This is a tough league and mistakes will be punished.
In lg1/championship we could recover from a mistake or 2, it'll much more difficult in this league..... imho

If football pros were chosen on loyalty alone....KD would be everybody's choice for the No1 shirt. Personally, I think he has earned his right through shear talent (he had a great season last year). There is little doubt that we need someone in to challenge and eventually take the shirt off him though.

Elland Rd last season tells me he is still at a top level. Granted, any cracks in our armour will be ruthlessly exposed at this level. We will find out soon enough

give Davis half a season and see if he cuts it. If so bring a youngster in (like when we had Shilton and Flowers) to be brought through gradually. If not get in someone with better experience.

I was disappointed about the slow progress regarding a new GK, until I realised that NA has a cunning plan.
Think about it, he is a Goalkeeper and would love to play in the Premier League. If push came to shove he could pull on a jersey.
Made me think.

Precisely. Kelv has been voted keeper of the season three years running by his fellow pros and there have been some seriously top keepers to beat like Schmeichel.

However, this is the Prem. He thoroughly deserves to start and it's his position to lose. That's why a young keeper like Butland is the way forward as he will replace Kelv eventually be it due to form or age.

Kelvin Davis is fabulous role model for any saintly kid. Kelv won't fight.. he'll train hard and perform as well as he can. If an up and comer or newcomer does better, Kelv will keep trying but will support his team mate whatever and would be ready anytime to serve. This is the proper way. None of the primadonna rubbish just professional dedication to your team... Good on you Kelv.

Good luck Dan Seaborne and pos thoughts for Steve Davis not playing due to a minor injury he's carrying.

Do you antipedians ever sleep?

Now that IS loyalty.

Just heard Kelv on Solent (online). Top bloke. In a year or two, he could be another Jaidi-esque mentor to all the youngsters, be they mad goalie types or 'proper' footballers.

I have to say- I agree with first posting. While I am the first to say "thanks" KD for being the best in League 1 and Championship, he's simply not going to be able to handle the "pace" of the premier.
I am actually a huge fan of KD, so this has nothing to do with that and I think people should learn to separate the two.
But this is not about "appreciation" its about "talent" and particularly "speed and mistakes"!
When it comes to the sheer speed of the ball in the premier league the GK's have to be very fast and KD is not. When he was in this division last they called him "Calamity Kelv" Do we think adding 5 years of age will help that?
This is not a dis on him cause I actually think he is great and has been perhaps one of our best 3 performers over the last few years but I just think that Nigel knows this is 'one step too many'!

I sometimes find comments amusing. Such as 'KD has made mistakes' Lol every keeper makes mistakes.
Over the years I have seen the best and the worst from the likes of Sprake and Bonnetti who on their game were unbeatable and on another day let the softest goal in. The likes of Flowers, Burridge, Neimi etc
Have all done the same.
There isn't a keeper past or present that doesn't get caught by the odd soft goal.
He is one of the best keepers around, worth his starting place. Yes we need a good keeper to push him for the top spot. That is healthy. Yet we had the third best defence last season and three seasons on the trot he has been voted top keeper. He has laso been the difference in us being promoted and not. His performance at Leeds for example.
Every player will make a mistake, just in goal its more crucial and he makes less than most. Wish the knockers would get off his back. No one says every time Rickie misses a shot, or Adam losses possession he should be replaced. One or two need to give the guy some respect and slack.
He will perform well enough.

Sorry you feel that way Joelster. Who ever comes in Kelv will get his day to show his worth. He's a loyal dedicated man who's trained hard and has the respect of the players. It's the other managers who voted best in the league and championship.
It'll take a proven top keeper to take away starts from Kelv. not an unproven kid or lower half prem player.
I think the last few years have improved the man out of sight. We'll differ on this one. Good Luck Kelvin.

His pathetic attempts at saving penalties was certainly good for a laugh, the guy is a clown, bless him. A bit worrying when KD took a knock when Arse scored, Priority Number One, get instant GK cover or we will surely fail.

KD should rightly keep the number 1 shirt! He has been loyal to SFC and his proved his worth with the last 2 season seeing some of his best performances!
However on yesterday's performance by TF, no disrespect but he is clearly not a challenger for the number 1 spot and will not survive in the Premier league! With BB gone, we really do need to sign a good keeper or two pretty quick!
We are going to need a strong squad, with plenty of competition to be in the starting 11 week in week out! Hopefully this will ensure top performances and battle through a tough season ahead!

Kelvin is 35 not 45 or 55.
He is in his prime as a goalkeeper.
I believe Kelvins position is assured even when we bring in a new goalkeeper.
He got us promoted with that incredible display at Leeds.
He has played his best football these last 2 seasons and I don't see any reason for that to change.
We need cover in his position there is no doupt and this will cost a lot of money.
Kelvin needs a player of quality
to be pressing for his place, this will keep his keep his standards right.
