Gillingham's Paulo Gazzaniga linked with £1m move to Southampton

Daily Echo: Tommy Forecast Tommy Forecast

SAINTS have again been linked with a move for Gillingham keeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

Nigel Adkins is keen to add another stopper to his squad with Kelvin Davis and Tommy Forecast the only senior keepers at the club following the release of Bartosz Bialkowski.

“It is fair to say we are going to need to bring another goalkeeper in as Bartosz [Bialkowski] did ever so well for us but didn’t play enough games,” Adkins said last Friday.

“We will bring another one if not two goalkeepers into the fold.”

Saints had a £6m offer turned down by Birmingham for Jack Butland are now reportedly eyeing the £1m-rated Gazzaniga.

The 19-year-old, who has also caught admiring glances from Everton, played for Gillingham for much of the second half of last season.

Gazzaniga has reportedly not travelled with the squad for a pre-season training camp, fuelling speculation he is close to completing a move.

Gillingham manager Martin Allen is hoping, if he does lose Gazzaniga, that he will be loaned back for next season.

He said: “He will be here at the start of the season and if there is a deal to be done then hopefully it will be with a view to keeping him here on loan, for one more year.

“That would be good for Paulo and obviously it would be good for this club because he is a good goalkeeper.

“Hopefully he can stay here for one more year and achieve something special at Gillingham before he moves on.

“It’s what the chairman is hoping to do.”

He's got a bit of the Grobelaars about him, but Adkins should know his stuff when it comes to keepers.

Will be honest, I don't know a scooby doo about this guy, but I'm sure NA has done his homework.

I think this guy is a good option! - Have heard some good things about him, and to be honest i'm much happier spending £1million on him rather than £6m on Jack Butland who effectilvely played in the same league last year!

Hes nothing like Grobelar, but he is a special kid. If you get him b4 Everton you will be very lucky.
He's just talented and probably could have played in any position on the pitch.
Sad to say as a Gill's fan, we won't get to see him this year and doubtless he will be sold on for millions.
Hey Ho. Good Luck Saints in Prem!

cropper is the keeper released by ipswich, but he was named, as is the keeper who has replaced "trialist". But do not think a player who was turning out for Gillingham would be asked to play in a trial. the management would know what he can do, without that. but for me gazzinga fits the profile we need for a new keeper.

Gazzinga sounds like the catch phrase of a children's cartoon character. Lots of scope for a decent song for him.

Actually Gazzinga's not his name. He is Paulo Gazzaniga. Not quite so much scope for a decent song then.
