SAINTS have again been linked with a move for Gillingham keeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

Nigel Adkins is keen to add another stopper to his squad with Kelvin Davis and Tommy Forecast the only senior keepers at the club following the release of Bartosz Bialkowski.

“It is fair to say we are going to need to bring another goalkeeper in as Bartosz [Bialkowski] did ever so well for us but didn’t play enough games,” Adkins said last Friday.

“We will bring another one if not two goalkeepers into the fold.”

Saints had a £6m offer turned down by Birmingham for Jack Butland are now reportedly eyeing the £1m-rated Gazzaniga.

The 19-year-old, who has also caught admiring glances from Everton, played for Gillingham for much of the second half of last season.

Gazzaniga has reportedly not travelled with the squad for a pre-season training camp, fuelling speculation he is close to completing a move.

Gillingham manager Martin Allen is hoping, if he does lose Gazzaniga, that he will be loaned back for next season.

He said: “He will be here at the start of the season and if there is a deal to be done then hopefully it will be with a view to keeping him here on loan, for one more year.

“That would be good for Paulo and obviously it would be good for this club because he is a good goalkeeper.

“Hopefully he can stay here for one more year and achieve something special at Gillingham before he moves on.

“It’s what the chairman is hoping to do.”
