Southampton considering £3.5m bid for Scott Dann

Daily Echo: Scott Dann Scott Dann

Saints are reportedly weighing up a £3.5m move for Scott Dann.

The Blackburn defender is being chased by Saints’ guests at St Mary’s on Saturday, Dutch giants Ajax, but Nigel Adkins could offer him a chance to remain in England.

Dann had been expected to leave Ewood Park this summer following Blackburn’s relegation from the Premier League , but clubs have reportedly been put off by a £6m price tag.

However, it seems Saints may be confident of negotiating a better deal.

The 25-year-old has twice been relegated from the top flight but would provide vital cover in the centre of defence with Adkins potentially set to try and recruit two centre halves before the start of the season.

2 successive relegations is irrelevant, he's 1 player so not solely responsible for either relegation or survival, we need as many players with top flight experience as possible and he fits the bill perfectly with Davis in the middle should provide a good experienced spine of the team

I suspect some people are confusing Dann with Jonah. Jonah was in the Dandy with Dann and of course everything Jonah touched went down. However, Dann wasn't unlucky. Indeed he wasn't really Desperate either - he got that name after first appearing in the Dandy as a 'Desperado'.

I think Nigel likely wants Dann to renew his partnership with Korky the Cat on his return from the Olympics.

A number of posters on here have been saying we need a no-nonsense centre back. I hope we get Dann. I'd love to see some of those prima-donna Prem forwards up against a Saint who can lift a cow with one hand; has his pillow filled with rubble and shaves with a blowtorch.

Just back from Evian and I think in Stephens and Seabourne we nearly have enough cover. Hooiveld & Stephens who played together in the 1st half were really excellent. Against a team ranked 9th in France Saints were so in control. Along with Jose & Seabourne there is nearly enough there already.
Jay Rod will prove to be a fantastic buy . So unselfish, good in the air and can play out wider or down the middle. I feel NA has so many options in how it plays it now. RL with JR one side and Adam the other would be my thought with Morgan, Davis and one of Chappers, Punch or Ward Prowse ( who works so hard ).
Now having seen them in the flesh pre season I am really confident. 10th place for me

Interesting and encouraging comments. How does 9th in France compare to 9th in England?

I haven't got a clue.

Did we play with three at the back in France with wing backs? Or a flat back 4?

My call based on last season, our new signings, plus whoever else we get in, is 12th at best, but more likely 15th.

Not sure about Dann.

good to read that Saints were seen as being so in control against a 'continental team' who are always apparently better at this than the English direct style. Though this is how we played in the Championship most of last season.
Great post though mate, very encorouging.
Anyone know whether Clyne is 21 or not..

Flat back 4 both halves
The other revelation was Clyne. Only 15-20 mins but fantastic. Don't want to get too excited but looked liked an Ashley Cole type full ( less attitude i hope )
By the way I think both Buttner and
Jens are on the way here !.
Sorry forgot Corkie.

If Buttner and Lens sign up now, then it would have been a great close season player acquisition period - to give it its formal name..

I would not pay any more than three million for Danns. I would hope we would set are sights abit higher and go for a European centre back with international experience. Danns does not tick the box for me. One things is for certain our chairman will not play over the odds for an average player. I think we will get Lens but in will be nearer the six million mark. Butland deal is none starter. We got our man last week. Looking at his stats for last season he kept 7 clean sheets in a row.

It would seem Fulham are now favorites to get Butner and Saints are no longer interested according to the rumour mill of papers and sky.
Would like to see Lens here sounds a good quality buy.
Palace are going to tribunal saying Saints offer for Clyne is a joke.
Is Danns a better player than what we have?
So far Rodriguez and Clyne are both young players who will I believe be special. Davies is the player that can fire our midfield. Gazza is one for the future I think.
As for team selections and midfield, it will change , I think they will change depending on who we play.
Certain players suit certain situations.
Ajax will be a very difficult test next Saturday but will be a good bench marker.

I've e mailed Nigel to explain that at 25 years old Dann would have to be included in the squad max number. He wasn't sure how the 21 year old exception rule worked despite the fact that I explained to him that 21 is the fifth discrete semiprime number and together with 22 forms the second discrete semiprime pair. Divisible by 1, 3 and 7, 21 can also be identified clearly by adding up the first six numbers we know exist..... ie 1+2+3+4+5+6 = 21.

Going by the friendly matches Nige seems intent on playing 4-3-2-1
this coming season, but I haven't been able to figure out why yet or how Dann would fit in - and Nige won't tell me. Indeed on my first follow-up phone call to the club today I was told by an underling to try and pull my lower lip over my head and swallow. On the second call another lickspittle said "If I you have a family, please let Nigel know as he may want to buy one of the puppies.

It worries me that such strange people seem to be holding responsible positions at St Marys - but hey ho there are a lot of oddballs about nowadays.

Not going to happen and now we are there!
Premier league and the youth team intact and 4 players promoted and more to come.
Looking forward to Alan Hansen saying we won't win anything with kids!

just had a brief visit to the news site , poopey in their death throes ....... not pretty but strangely intoxicating .
Mixed feelings on this one,the players never put pompey in the state they find themselves in,they just signed the contracts that were put in front of them. Would any of us be any different-I just hope the charities and small businesses dont get nailed yet again.
Why dont they just turn the life support off and re-invent themselves...... birch has had his bank balance topped up nicely.
Who will our rivals be now-not a lot of point shouting we hate pompey, when they dont exist.
Im guessing we wont be seeing them for 10 years or more,in fact its quite moving a bit like the final scene in the last of the mohichans.
Oh well life goes on,they banged on about thier history and now they are just that.
What will happen to westie-town cryer?
Imagine walking around tatooed all over with the name of a club that doesnt exist-how stupid.
I'll have mixed feelings too. I'll have a quiet pause for thought...and then laugh my socks off.
There will be a void without our bitter rivals...but I reckon we'll get over it really really quickly. Their true history can go down as a lesson for all football clubs to take lessons from...and their clown can be their living statue to the blight that was once portsmouth football club.

Would you believe this! my son in law from Gosport has been a Pompey Supporter all of his life (age 48) and has just purchaced a Season Ticket at St Mary's. this is surely a man with integrity, he has even admitted that it was either Saints or Reading.
I am going to buy him a new home strip. "with EX-POMPEY printed on the back, so when you sight him you can either shake his hand or kick his arse-ender.

Some fools on here referring to Dann as a Jonah, and only able to act as cover. If Birmingham hadn't almost gone to the wall a la Pompey last year, he would have commanded a £14m fee. He is one of the classiest centre halves about, able to walk the ball out of defence and pick his pass. I guarantee that if you sign him, he will be your rock at the back and demote those around him to a suipporting role. He really is that good (did anyonme perform well under Keen?). Buy him and relish a bargain. KRO SOTV
