Saints fifth best supported away side in 2011-12 season in Football League

Saints fans Saints fans

SAINTS were roared on into the Premier League by the fifth largest away following in the Football League last season.

The amount of fans travelling to back Nigel Adkins and his players in away Championship matches was on average a storming 2,311 per game.

That was up 55 per cent on Saints’ average away following in the League 1 promotion season of 2010/11.

Only Leeds and West Ham could boast a bigger average away following in statistics just released by the Football League.

The other two clubs with a bigger following than Saints were League 1 pair Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United.

Saints’ away following was almost double that of arch rivals Portsmouth.

Pompey’s 1,166 average, though, was an increase on their 2010/11 figure – by just one fan!

The amount of visiting fans at St Mary’s last season, meanwhile, was virtually doubled on 2010/11.

On average, there were 1,568 away supporters for league games at Saints’ stadium last season – a rise of 92 per cent.

That was no real surprise, as many Championship sides are far better supported than League 1 clubs.

The biggest percentage ratio increase was reported by Brighton, whose promotion and move to the Amex Stadium saw an average away following of 1,859 – up 486 per cent on the cramped Withdean.

Stevenage (237%), Peterborough (207%) and Torquay (204%) also saw huge increases in away followings.

This can't be true. Everyone knows the skunts are the bestest bestest fans ever anywhere. FACT!

I only hope they both support us after August 10th. Herein after to be known as The Glorious 10th. It should become a public holiday.

And another thing. It's not their fault. I know this because they told me. Picking 5 appalling owners and three thieving managers and eight overpaid crap players was pure bad luck! What odds would you have got on that? Just bad luck FACT.

I'm surprised by these findings as according to most Skate fans they take 15,000 to most away games. ;o)

St Retford says...

This is ****. There's no way we can have twice the travelling support of the skunts.

As they always say to me, "We might not have an owner or any players and we might be about to go bust, but we have the best fans in the world."

Imagine how it would feel for them if their fans were, in fact, really sh1t.

Got to take your hat off to the Sheffield sides. Considering their league positions last season (league 1) that's pretty good going. Thay had around 1000 more fans at away games than when we were in that league. Just saying. It will be interesting to see the stats at the end of this coming season to see how we fair.

The thing in their favour is that they are closer to the likes of Huddersfield, Oldham and Rochdale where you can get the whole end for away games if necessary. But like you said credit where it's due

What's that funny little blue creature with the bell going to do next season? When you allow your entire existence to be defined by association with a really, really sh1t football team you have to wonder what'll happen when that team has gone.

Actually, it would make a good documentary series. The whole 'gypsy' thing is done to death. We need a new section of the underclass to laugh at.

St Retford says...

"Lynn, idea for TV series: 'My Big Fat Gypsy Football Club'. I, Alan Partridge, wonder around Portsmouth of a Saturday afternoon tracking down locals who find themselves shopping rather than watching football. As they stare at the floor of New Look, sweating gravy under the heating which is pumped in from the flames of hell, ears bleeding from Olly Murs or some such sh1te being blasted out over the tannoy and unable to muster anything even resembling an opinion on the dress their wife has just tried on other than 'please make this misery end', I ask them: 'Was the FA Cup WORTH it?'"

Presumably the bell ringer will become a dead ringer....and it will herald the end of the bell end's bell.

Or he could buy a cow costume and go to Switzerland. Or get a job as an ice cream van.

Help!!!

Hey Great Saints fans! I need some help.

I am coming over to watch Udinese game with my family from Canada. (First time I have seen saints live since I was like 12 (25 years ago)

Anyway, can I get some help from you on a few questions-
1. Where should I purchase tickets for my family that don't have to hear much profanity. What section? (little kids)
2. When does the game usually end?
3.What else should I know about the stadium? (things to buy at store...food...)
thanks a lot
Joel

family section is block 22-26 , buy them at the ticket office or on-line , game ends 2 hours after kick-off , not a poor view in the stadium and buy your food before you get there !

They won't believe the figures...they still live in a bygone age when the best supporters were the ones who threw the most missiles from behind a fence. Alas, their delusion has led to their near extinction... they still think the thesis of Charles Darwin is poppycock...but then again...so would Neanderthal man if he were here today! :O)

Another idea for a TV series: Undercover documentary series following a southampton millionaire trying to infiltrate the portsmouth underclasses in persuit of the infamous old woman on a mobility scooter. Is she real? is she a myth? is she in anyway conencted to the demise of the fratton based club?
.
It could be screened either before or after 'my big fat gypsy football club'.
