Southampton rumoured to be interested in Ivan Ramis

Daily Echo: Lee Barnard Lee Barnard

SAINTS are understood to have expressed an interest in Wigan Athletic target Ivan Ramis.

The Real Mallorca defender has also been the subject of interest from Premier League rivals Sunderland, Aston Villa and Swansea City.

Wigan are hopeful that a recent £4m bid for the 27-year-old will be accepted within the next 24 hours.

The likelihood is that Ramis will join fellow Spaniard Roberto Martinez in the north-west.

But Saints’ interest is confirmation that Nigel Adkins is after an experienced central defender with the sort of top-flight experience that Ramis has gained over several seasons in Spain.

It is easy to see why Ramis would interest Saints.

He is the sort of ball-playing centre-half that matches Adkins’s ethos. And as he enters his peak years he is believed to be ready for a new challenge.

Other than a loan spell at Real Valladolid six years ago, the former Spain, U19, U21 and U23 international has spent his entire career with Mallorca, who he helped to finish eighth in La Liga last season.

Saints are also rumoured to be interested in Sweden’s Martin Olsson, who put in a transfer request at Ewood Park following Blackburn Rovers’ relegation from the Premier League.

Blackburn are believed to want £5m for the versatile, left-sided 24-year-old.

Meanwhile, Swindon Town have scotched reports that they have bid £500,000 for Saints striker Lee Barnard , above.

Swindon Town chairman Jeremy Wray said: “There is absolutely no truth in that story whatsoever.”

This report is a little strange. You open it up and there is a picutre of Lee Barnard and you think what does he have to do with this story???
Then you get to the bottom and there is a small sentence about a possible move to Swindon. It would make more sense to put a picture of NA on the story.

I have heard good things about Ramis, could be a great signing, hoping that a few of our clingers on move on sooner rather than later. Barnard, forte, dickson, harding and maybe even hammond have done a fantastic job for us over the last couple of years, but they are not prem quality and they are just taking up wages that could be spent elsewhere. Also they could bring in some funds to offset some of the money we have been spending in the transfer market this summer

Sorry? Thought Puncheon was being played pre season and some say has had man of the match performances.

Seaborne was a question mark last season but actually started really well, better than Jose IMHO, before his horrific attack so how do you know what he's capable of?

Firstly because of Martinez being Spanish, secondly he will demand wages he's not worth which Nicola won't pay, thirdly he's 27 and it seems our current transfer policy is to buy younger players, If it is solely down to football reason I no doubt he's come here, however sometimes that's not the case, the Buttner deal is an example.

I would take a £5 million punt on Martin Olsson young, keen and played really well last season in a poor team.

You guys don't seem to have any loyalty to the players who got us to the premiership, I'm sure you would be slating them if they had the same loyalty as you.
Take a look in the mirror before you post a load of cr4p.
Personally I think you will be surprised at how well some of them do this season.

Both of these philosophies has merit. Last season I would say that Norwich and Swansea reaped the benefit of loyalty to their players and keeping a settled, happy squad without changing much. QPR on the other hand, tried to buy their way, and struggled. Hmmm....

It's finding a balance between loyalty and improvement where needed. Both Swansea and Norwich did sign several players to augment the core team that got them to the prem. QPR went too far and signed too many new players which ripped the team spirit out on the squad and then they struggled. NA has got it right so far IMO as he is building around the top players who got to the prem but not naive enough to expect that they don't need some help now they are there.

Great point rackers!!!! We don't wanna be taking too many players out of the side which have built up so much momentum and no doubt pride amongst themselves as a squad over the last 2 and arguably 3 if you wanna include the JPT? NA has publicly said where he wants to strengthen and we have been given no reason thus far to worry what he and NC are working on. I think the "blue print for the club is chuffing fantastic!
