More Saints signings on the way - Adkins

NIGEL ADKINS NIGEL ADKINS

Nigel Adkins has assured Saints fans he will bring in more new faces before the transfer window closes.

With the start of the Premier League season looming, there have been just four new arrivals this summer.

While Adkins is delighted with those additions, he has promised that the club’s business is not yet done.

The manager has admitted, though, that the transfer market has been slow.

“I would imagine there would be more players coming in,” he said.

“If you ask every other manager the same thing they’ll all be saying the same thing, because it’s been very quiet actually.

“Like everything, it can be like a domino effect that goes on.

“We are still very actively looking to bring some players in and we will do.

“We have to make sure we get the right ones in. We have to get them in, but we have to get right ones in.”

Saints’ business has so far consisted of £7m striker Jay Rodriguez, who joined in a club record deal, midfielder Steven Davis , right back Nathaniel Clyne and keeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

While the first three are expected to be regular starters, Gazzaniga is likely to provide back-up to current number one Kelvin Davis .

Adkins insists he is thrilled with the quality of players that have arrived this summer, but admits he is also hoping for more before the window shuts at the end of the month – and probably before Saints kickoff at champions Manchester City a week on Sunday.

“The additions that we’ve brought in are excellent additions so we are pleased with that,” he said.

“We still expect to do business and if you look at all the other clubs they are going to be in exactly the same situation and the same boat.”

Having already addressed certain areas, it is fairly clear what positions Saints are still hoping to strengthen in.

They are certainly light on numbers at the heart of defence, with Blackburn’s Scott Dann a notable link in that position.

However, a £6m buyout clause in his contract makes a deal prohibitive any potential suitor.

Adkins is keen to inject some pace out wide, with PSV’s Dutch speedster Jeremain Lens having been on the radar.

Saints had also been expected to bring in Vitesse Arnhem left back Alexander Buttner, who can play a more advanced role too, only for that deal to collapse.

“There are positions that we’ve targeted, there’s players that we’ve targeted and there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes at Southampton to make that happen,” said Adkins.

I realise that this article is just to keep the fans happy but actions speak louder thank words. Yes we need to bring in the right players for the right price, but we have known what players we needed since that 4-0 thrashing of coventry. So come on saints, feed our hunger for new signings!

Well put, Osprey. His memory lives on.

As for signings, I think we should go out and sign everyone from anyone, especially those who demand twice what we can afford in fees and wages. It's the best way to ensure we resume our local derby soon.

Adkins knows what we need - the problem is every other club is also looking for it and the transfer market has been rather subdued this summer. With Euro 12 and the olympics. I am sure that plans are a foot to get the players we need at the right price on the right wage and contract. Like the post said above we dont want these hasbeens rocking up on £90K a week with no passion or interest.

I'm very confident about our forward line and midfield. A lot of top quality here, and also strength in depth which will give the versatility to play different formations best suited to the opposition - and cover for any injuries or suspensions. Defence and goalkeeper? Well that's a very different story. Urgent action required please.

My newspaper today reports an alarming result - Sutton 4 "Southampton XI" 0. I did not even know there was a game. What side did we put out? Sutton are Ryman League FF$.

The top Euro teams only touch the ball three times from the back to the back of the net ie pass, fast run, cross, volley in it goes. We appear to be pass pass pass pass stumble **** pass slip pass scuff muff at both ends. BUT!!!! we do have the potential to hone that on the day to play some smashing football and I hope like heck we do.. not like that wetspam lot playing hoof ball.. Amazing and unbelieveable.

However, as all adjectives denoting astonishment and disbelief have been devalued by the deflationary effect of ridiculous over use in the Olympics coverage, I think we should now use the new word 'dragoobi' for amazing and 'umptious' for unbelieveable. Thus someone jumping into a sandpit can be described as amazing and unbelieveable but a big asteroid hitting London or the skunts surviving can be described as dragoobi and totally umptious.

The problem is with a tough chairman, you are limited to what you can get. If you want good top level players you have to pay more than 1 or 2mil. We did that for Jay but have shown no real ambition in the close season to bring proven quality in. We have bought in Davies who has experience at this level but the rest are championship players with potential. Which is what most of our squad are.
Whilst we should not be held to ransom over players. We also need to realise that premier class players come at premier prices.
A little bit of proven quality would be welcome before the start of the season, otherwise we are going to face a massive fight.

Are you lot for real??
Until the players are tested at this level how do you know they aren't good enough?
Swansea and Norwich didn't add a great deal of quality to there squads when they came up but they held there own.
I think Swansea in particular have shown if you can stay in this league it will be a lot easier to attract higher calibre players, because I have been impressed with the signings they have made, although I think some that is due to now having manager that most people have heard of. I bet Swansea couldn't believe there luck when Liverpool came in for Brendan Rogers. I wouldn't mind seeing the odds on Swansea finishing above Liverpool.

I doubt if swansea are bothered after getting Michael Laudrup. And look what he has done already, started building his squad from the back, not the front.

I don't have a problem with that. If we didn't have a "proper" chairman, holding the purse strings, we would be no better than the skates.

You criticise NA for not signing the list of players he wanted.
How can you make that comment without knowing who was on his list, unless of course you do know. If that is the case then please tell us.

You also claim we have shown "no real ambition to bring in proven quality".

Can you support this with proof, or are you just frustrated and letting off steam without knowing jack schitt about what NA is doing??

Possibly, though Davis will do a similar good job. My disappointment was missing out on Snodgrass. We have not come here just to make up the numbers, the necessary faces will arrive to complement an already decent team and we will be fine. It will be a tough baptism of fire in the opening games. You may be excited by that, but not as excited as I am... I can't wait for Portpin to take over your club again, now that will be interesting.

By the way, I personally do not go onto your site, I find it very hard to understand the lingo! But I find it ironic that you should mention about Saints fans being on the Portsmouth site when you are sat on our site most of the time!

Portpin (who?) are on a mission to recoup losses, and rest assured they will succeed.
Whats of more interest is who the new CB will be.

It was Saints under 21s that played Sutton, similar line up that played Sholing FC,and Winchester City, included Dickson,Barnard and Forte in the line up.
the Saints U21: Cropper, Young, Stephens, Turnbull, Dickson, Chambers (Rickard 84), Reeves, Moore (Curtis 60), Hoskins (Forte 63), Barnard (c), Sinclair (Isgrove 60). Subs not used: Johns (GK).
Give them a break. Hardly a reason to panic SGT Wilson.

Excellent points there Tugboat.

I agree about the CB, I fear Fonte is a weak link and that hurts to say as I don't like to get down on any of our players, but I feel Stephens is more secure at the back. So an additional CB would be great.

Overall I think we have a good squad of players and if we can just secure a couple more signings then things will be fine. I agree about Jarvis, far too much money... I like the look of Lens, from what I have seen of him (pardon the pun)!

And to that end, I recommend that we set up an interdepartmental committee with fairly broad terms of reference so that at the end of the day we'll be in the position to think through the various implications and arrive at a decision based on long-term considerations rather than rush prematurely into precipitate and possibly ill-conceived action which might well have unforeseen repercussions. – Sir Humphrey Appleby

Here in Australia we have not got excited about the Olympic medals table, in fact it has become a bit of an embarrassment, we expect and indeed usually do far better.
So the clever wags on morning TV have come up with a new format (tongue in cheek). We show the medals table based on wins per capita of population.
That throws USA, China and GB out of t he top 10 and surprise surprise Aussies are now in the top 10.

Costa baz
There is nothing wrong with being a tough chairman. I am not saying we should spend beyond our means.
I agreed we should not be held to ransom over players.
I think it has been pretty obvious to most that we have missed out on players wanted for whatever reason. Which are probably not the club's fault.
As for ambition, other than Steve Davies what other player do we have who has had a more than a couple of seasons in top level football none?
We have lots of good young players who may or may not make the grade at this level. We have a few championship players who have earnt their chance. Yet we also need some top level experience to steady things and give us that little extra.
This jack schitt sounds like a friend of yours.
I am sure NC and NA will come up trumps as they have done before.
I just believe we need a few players who know their way around the top leagues, to give us our best chance of staying up.
Maybe its nerves remembering BIg Mac's first season when he took charge at christmas with us in 4th place, brought in the young players and we ended up relegated.
Need a little top level experience in the mix is all.
Give my regards to your mate jack schitt

I have to say, Mush, for all the many Aussie qualities, being able to take a defeat ain't one of them. Just watched the Woman's BMX Final and see it was the Aussie failure Buchannan who shed tears at the end, while the Kiwi lass went straight over to the Colombian winner to congratulate her.

Na is putting pressure on the don to sign players as every man and his dog knows we need them.
The dilemma is can we afford them and their wages, can we take the risk? And that falls at the dons feet.
IMO he has got us back where the club belongs and I believe on all things fair we are a mid to bottom prem league team. Strachan got a team fit and we punched at about our weight. To move on it ain't just the club that needs to do more but supporters ( agreed ticket pricing needs looking at) and fill that stadium and then some! Give the don reason to extend capacity and then we can expect more.
We will struggle I have no doubt about that but we will survive, who is with us Xmas/ end of season is another matter. Hammond and de ridder are definate no's

LAFFAMINUTE
Nice that you went to Bristol, nice that you seem to go to all the games, interested in knowng how we're doing, and know everything about how our mighty team is preparing for the upcoming season.

Your interest in the mighty Saints is appreciated, you actually follow us. Hey any true supporter who wishes to voice their opininion/comments whether positive or otherwise is welcome here.

I am an old man who attended his first game in 1957 at the Dell and became a true Saint then. I never missed a game (home or away), until my career took me to Canada. There are people on this site that know I have crossed the Atlantic on many occasion to watch my beloved team, including league one, (when I am guaranted a ticket) and fly back home on a Sunday back here so the jet-lag doesn't kick in.

No - I am not a "superior" STH, nor do I go to as many away games as you apparently do.

But I commend you on going to pre-season away games as you claim to to make your comments on our site.

Whether or not you wish to be negative or not, you should be commended for your interest in SFC.

It's an exciting time to be a Saints fan.... lets just be positive about the whole thing that is happening here.

I would love to meet you in the Station, buy you a pint....and have a laffaminite

I would love to meet you in the Station, buy you a pint....and have a laffaminite Try takling to an air-stewardess when your voice is hoarse.
You obviously did not read my first post that says i had been working and staying in Bath for a week and decided to pop along to see the game at ashton gate for some entertainment not that i support you lot.Not sure what you seem to be rambling on about but good on you that you support your club.

More players the merrier Adkins that are well paid and on nice long contracts so if you manage to get relegated which is a very strong possibiliy, you will be just stuck with an over paid bunch of money grabbers doing Championship football, like we had at Pompey... to our bitter cost..
NC too clever for that. He will write in a relegation clause to be able to cut wages. Losers!

I see Blackpool have reported Saints for an illegal approach for M.Phillips. Old Holloway prob blowing it all up as he got a problem with the mighty reds. Would like to see Phillips join us on the bus.

Phillips ? needed him last year he's well past it for this level Owen ? Getting old

Saints need real quality Walcott definitely they need to be spending upwards of 10- 20 Million on 4-6 players or it's quite simple

Back they go

They scraped promotion they are not good enough to stay in the premiership

If we want to stay up we Definately need another centre back. Scott Dann is a great centre back who would most probally join now that Blackburn have been relegated. Also Matt Phillips and Thomas Ince are t good wingers at Blackpool, they would both join as we are in the league above Blackpool also. Matt phillips is probally the better of the two, plus he is only 23. I also feel Davies is a good keeper, however e is to short and weak from se pieces. I also feel that we need to sign a second new winger if we are going to stick to this new 433 formation, as De Ridder is never played, Guly is far to inconsistant and puncheon isn't good enough for a starting 11 place. Someone like Jarvis or Redmond from Wolves and Blackburn would be good as they have many years ahead still and are playing in te championshp also, making them more likely to join.

When we finished the season NA had a list of players he wanted, most didn't happen.
Yes I love Saints, but fifty years of following them has left me a realist.
I have faith NC and NA will sort something.

Are you sure you have faith in NC and NA to sort it, 'cos it doesn't look like it from reading your post?
I cant help thinkingat there is a problem at Saints. Th tere has been little investment in players relative to increased income and I worry that NC is making a huge mistake in insisti is theng on relying on untried juniors coming through the academy in what ise toughest league in Europe. Unless they want to go straight back down something has to give and it doesnt take much to realise that either there is a lackof faith in the manager or it may be that the Liebherrs are simply disinterested in the fate of threir footbal club. If I were them however Id be worrying about my investment and be querying NC's poor performance

what rubbish. Remove your blinkers NC and NA are not pop sstars to be worshipped as if they can do no wrong. Football is a tough business and they will know that they will be judged on results by all and sundry including the more knowledgable, wait till you see the headlines if we start to lose a few games.I cant help being surprised at the lack of transfer activity is the club being sold or something??
