Franny Benali concerned about lack of new signings by Southampton ahead of Premier League season

Saints legend: Lack of new faces a worry
FRANNY Benali admits he is concerned at the lack of summer signings ahead of Saints’ first game back in the Premier League .
Saints have added four players to their squad since the end of last season; Jay Rodriguez , Steve Davis, Nathaniel Clyne and young goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
Dell legend Benali believes more are needed.
“It was a fantastic achievement to get back in the Premier League, it’s very pleasing to be back after seven years, but I would question whether there are enough new faces at this stage,” he said.
“They’ll need more to see them through the campaign and give them a real fighting chance of staying up.
“You need a strong depth of real quality in a Premier League squad.
“Ultimately the person that makes that decision is Nigel Adkins and I’m sure he’ll be making those additions because a number of players who have figured a lot in the last couple of years won’t be as involved as much this season.
“That is a shame from the players’ perspective but it is what happens when you go up.”
Saints have won three of their last four league games at Manchester City, but a draw would be an outstanding start for Nigel Adkins’ side.
“City away is a real baptism of fire,” says Benali, pictured right. “They’re a real force these days and playing away to the champions will be a very stern test.
“When I played at Man City at Maine Road it was usually a relegation battle and in 1996 we managed to stay up at their expense, despite losing at Maine Road.
“Manchester City have always had a very passionate set of fans so I’m sure it will be a wonderful atmosphere.
“Going there will be like a trip to Old Trafford used to be for us but I’m sure they’ll go there in a very positive frame of mind.
“But talk of qualifying for Europe in the club’s first season back is somewhat unrealistic.
“Finishing fourth from bottom has to be the starting point for them, and then they can go from there.”

This country has just told the world what a great thing it is to be British.
Last season Saints showed us what a great thing it is to be a Saints fan.
It's all good !!
Now .. altogether . .deep breathe
WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE.
THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE.
SMILE !!
Therefore no doomsayers needed.
Let NC and NA get on with it.
We are in the Prem prematurely to expectations, so it's a massive learning curve.
Mistakes will happen, we may have to fight relegation.Who knows?
Be positive.
If we go down we can get up again better for the experience.
We will be able to chant,
WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON, WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE, again.
Once more back onto the rollercoaster, love it.

As much as it would be nice to see signings by now, look around and nearly every other club is in the very same boat due to Euros and Olympics! Only two days ago Mancini was moaning about the lack of signings, the richest club!
This week will see signings as something will give that will trigger off the market into action. It's not unique to Saints, just a little closer to home. Don't question what NC can do or not, as not one can not say he has not delivered on every front in so many ways already. It makes me laugh when some question if his way of dealing is the problem. Just look at the players brought who talk with real passion of where the club are going! Regards possible signings, Saints have not confirmed or denied them, which either says they could still materialise, who just may be NC is not letting the club be held to ransom, ie Butner third party. The club are clearly getting the right sort of team player in, who wants to play for the shirt.
So stop stirring it DE as you are clearly frustrated with the lack of real knowledge of what actually the club are doing!
Lastly Franny and others are looking at fourth from bottom as an success for Saints, which is negative. When NC and NA are loudly saying we are looking at Europe places or more, which is positive. NA has also clearly said signings will be coming for sure, and he is excited.
Please all remember we are well run club with a plan, and will not pay over the odds and go down silly street. We are positive and moving forward. The owners promise us prem in five and did it in three. They hardly not going to be aware of what the club is entering into and what is need to not stay in the prem, but succeed in the prem! Enjoy the ride Saints fans!

Realistic. Two centre-backs of definite Premiership standard required. Not cheap, but cannot afford not to have. (And a change of tactics regarding the use of Rodriguez.)

For those of a particularly gloomy disposition there's a hypnotist in Portsmouth, Vladimir de Higgins, who's been doing a roaring trade with football fans throughout the year.
He has adapted his popular therapy for the fear of losing an erection to deal with the now locally even more prevelant phobia - fear of losing football matches.
He charges £5 an hour and after two hours supporters find themselves singing "Sh!t on the b*stards above ie that's nearly everybody" with happy gusto. He can even make ugly female fans with fat @rses think they are Jenifer Aniston.

Francis Benali's comments lend support to my views. He is right to be concerned. So far we have not brought in a single player with any credible Premiership experience. The current squad would do the Championship proud, but at Premiership level they will be slaughtered - starting next week.
I still do not think Nigel has the influence and clout to persuade class players of Premiership quality into St Mary's, end of story. He has done a marvellous job at St Mary's, but I simply cannot be persuaded he's the man for the future. I would love to be wrong, but as a staunch supporter of Saints for over 55 years - I don't think so.
My prediction is that after the first four games we will have one point. By Christmas we will be bottom of the league with no prospect of saving our status, Nigel will be fired, and we will have to start all over again next season in the Championship.
No, I am not a manic depressive killjoy, and I want Saints to be successful - but with the present manager and squad, that ain't going to happen! Of course I hope I'm totally wrong - please God let me be wrong, but ..............!!!

I'm all for getting in a new centre back and right winger before the season starts, but I trust NC and NA to bring in the right kind of player and not just fill squad numbers with absolutely anyone available. I suspect they'll end up like QPR did last season. No need to panic for us most deals are done last minute. Keep the faith.

He knows what he's doing and the last thing we need at St Mary's is turbulence in the managerial position. I'd be gutted if he left us and personally I'd be struggling to think of anyone who could instantly do a better job. Inexperienced managers learn quickly in the EPL, look at Brendan Rogers. He hardly had that much previous experience and is now at Liverpool. I'd rather it was him than Nigel. I also don't think it's a lack of influence that stops Nigel signing players. If you look at Clyne and Rodriguez they are great signings. Inexperienced maybe, but they will be quality. I just don't think he's in the market for paying over the odds for players that don't fit the mould. He’s building a team not bulking up the payroll.
A couple of weeks or so ago, I posted that I thought Nigel Adkins was out of his depth at this level, and I got some stick for it!

You cruel bastid. ;0)))))))
Anyway, Franny has said nothing that most of us haven't already thought.
Transfer windows are like this every year, for us. In fact having signed 4 players already puts us further ahead than usual, for this time.
We will get who we can afford and who wants to buy into the "Southampton Way".
Very few people know who we have actually made bids for, but as everyone does know, as soon as a bid is made the player's agent will be letting other teams know what has been offered, ensuring that the process gets dragged down into the mud, taking forever to come to fruition or fade away.
It's a marathon, not a sprint.

If the players approach this season with your thought process-yep were done for.
As for NA not having the flair to attract top players-get a grip-their attracted by big bucks and success. who would mancini attract with no dosh ??The Great manager theory is pointless.
seeing as we have just arrived back, are you really surprised that messi isnt beating our door down ?
Alicedad,s post made a very good point,we are in the Prem earlier than anyone imagined we would be,so if anyone thinks a club can put together a side that can challenge in the prem in one closed season their madder than me.
Yep this season will be a battle royal-cant wait bring it on and please stop underestimating the players we have .
Last point ,if we changed the manager now ,would that make a difference? how can you condemn NA,s ability in the prem without the proof.
Some people have tragically short memories-look back with pride then look forward with optimism.
Please re -read your post ,dig deep and find some enthusiasm for the forthcoming campaign and back the lads.

Both he and the vast majority of people on this site are regurgitating information that everyone already knows! "We need a new CB, number one, and some pacey wingers!"
The fact that we havent got either is not because NA doesnt know that, its because he cant get the ones he wants at the right price. People are saying he hasn't got the pulling power but selling our club and its vision to potential signings is something that both NA and NC are hughly adept at. This summer alone Buttner, Clyne, and Rodriguez all had other established prem teams after them but after coming to saints they said this was the place for them.
In NA and NC we trust!

Oh get really Saints fans (including Benali)!
