Saints' interest in Blackpool's Matt Phillips all above board, says Nigel Adkins
2:55pm Monday 13th August 2012 in Saints News
Matt Phillips
NIGEL Adkins confirmed Saints’ interest in Blackpool winger Matt Phillips – but insisted the club have not made an illegal approach for the player.
Seasiders boss Ian Holloway claimed that a Premier League side had tapped up the 21-year-old, with a report at the weekend naming Saints as that team.
Adkins admitted they had been in contact with Blackpool about Phillips, but was adamant they had acted responsibly.
“It’s a shame that Blackpool have had to go and do things via the media in the way that they have done,” he told the club’s website.
“I don’t think there is any hiding from the fact that Matt is a player that we have been an admirer of for the past few years, and in the last couple of weeks he has probably been identified as a target for a number of teams in the Premier League.
“I know that from the chairman’s point of view he has been in contact with the Blackpool chairman and that we have had a conversation with their chief executiv.
“I have spoken to Ian Holloway myself, so it’s not as if there has not been an interest demonstrated from Southampton .
“As I have said, we like to think that we do everything properly, by the book, and we will continue to do our matters privately and behind the scenes.
“Obviously, this situation has now arisen and we will take action on that and respond in the appropriate manner.”
Holloway had earlier claimed: “Somebody has made an illegal approach and we can prove that.”
When it came to matters on the pitch, Adkins said he was happy with what he saw in Saturday night’s friendly against Udinese, despite Saints suffering a 4-0 defeat.
“We didn’t want to be on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, but I don’t think it was a 4-0 game, because it was cracking,” he said.
“Until they scored their first goal we were well and truly in the ascendancy.”
Adkins added: “We have taken a lot from this game, which is positive.
“It was the final game of preseason and we have worked all the way through the campaign in a 4-3-3, implementing and improving different things.”

A. sue them for slander.
B. Blackpool should give us first refusal as an apology and we should sign him.
BUT... if it is true which I think that it might be to some degree we are in trouble and fast getting a repuation for ourselves of being tricky negotiators.

I believe NA is correct in saying we didn't 'tap up' Phillips and that media implentation was a pointless endeavour.
Phillips is a fantastic winger and would be a fine addition to the squad.
Good job on expanding the story Echo, best report I've seen on the subject thus far.

NA says he is happy with what he saw in the udinese game, that is seriously funny.
Like all good managers in front of the media you stand up for your team, behind closed doors he can say what he likes. The only manager I know not to follow these rules is Harry Redknapp.

Really wanted a settled team ready for the start of season, IF we do make signings yesterday they will need 3 months to settle at the best.
There is such a thing as false economy and I fear a panic and pricey spend in January, possibly without Adkins. New man in charge means new ideas and players he may not fancy, more un rest.

Obviously some signings in pivotal roles ASAP is what everyone wants but in the grand scheme of things 3 of our first 4 games although points would be great NA won't be banking on any, if we do get a draw or even a win it's a bonus. So with Wigan aside any news signings have time to settle before they are needed to collect vital points.

Its Holloways gamesmanship he wants to keep Phillips and one way to do it knowing Saints attitudes to keeping things quiet, is to create a storm in the hope Saints scupper the deal. Not hard from there to let out who the club is to someone so it becomes public knowledge.

That is NO club.
Nigel said a little while ago exactly the positions he wanted filled and it was what we were all saying on here.
Since then there have most certainly been negotiations.
Man City just signed their first player of the season, one who probably won't get a game for a while and then almost certainly get injured.
We have got 4 that we wanted and are in the hunt for more, as demonstrated by the fact Hologram is getting all aerated again over Saints.
A little patience, a little more positivity.

ALAN PARDEW has launched an astonishing attack on football’s agents.
The Newcastle boss has yet to make a single star signing over the summer.
And Pardew, preparing to kick off 2012-13 against Tottenham on Saturday, declared: “You ask any Premier League manager, outside of Chelsea, and we are all worrying about where to pitch.
“The big problem we have as football managers and chairmen is the valuation agents are putting on their players.
“They need to understand times have changed.”

Fulham and West Ham were interested in Clyne.
Others were interested in Davies.
So its not quite right to say players will not come here.
Its what reaction its has cooling Saints interest maybe or getting the price pushed up cos of other interest.
But certainly a bit of gamesmanship by Holloway. The latter giving Holloway a bigger transfer chest.
