Matt le Tissier says Southampton need more defensive cover
9:25am Tuesday 14th August 2012 in Saints News
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Matt Le Tissier
SAINTS legend Matt Le Tissier admits the biggest surprise of Saints’ transfer dealings this summer is that they have not yet signed a new centre half.
With just five days until the club’s opening Premier League fixture at defending champions Manchester City, the only movement at the heart of defence has been in an outward direction, with Aaron Martin moving to Crystal Palace on a season-long loan.
That has left just the regular pairing of Jose Fonte and Jos Hooiveld, with only Dan Seaborne and untested youngster Jack Stephens providing backup.
Le Tissier believes Saints need more in that position if they are to cope with the sort of firepower that their top flight opponents will be attacking them with.
“The biggest surprise to me is that there have been no centre backs brought in,” he said. “I think we’re lacking a bit in that department, in terms of strength in depth.”
The man voted the greatest Saints player of all-time by supporters admitted he had expected additions in another area by now as well.
“I thought maybe a wide player with the kind of real pace that’s going to frighten defenders and make teams defend a bit deeper,” he said.
“With the amount of money that was made from the club getting into the Premier League, I don’t think we’ve spent much of it yet.”
Le Tissier is satisfied with the four players that have arrived this summer, though, highlighting former Palace right back Nathaniel Clyne as a “bargain signing”.
And he believes that, as they have done for the past few seasons, Saints can follow in the footsteps of Norwich and survive in their first season back among the elite.
“I look at what Norwich did last season and I think the squads are pretty similar, so I see no reason why we can’t get somewhere near what Norwich achieved. I would certainly be happy with 14th or 15th place – somewhere around there,” said Le Tissier.
With the visit to Manchester City being followed by contests against Wigan, Manchester United and Arsenal, the Dell legend concedes that it might be a bumpy start for Saints.
But he is confident that, even if they are down at the bottom after the opening few weeks, they will still survive.
Le Tissier has plenty of past experience to point towards, having been part of the Saints team that lost eight of their first nine matches in 1993/94 and managed to stay up, as well as the 1998/99 side, which escaped the bottom three despite winning just a single point in their first eight games.
“If we had four points after four games I think that would be pretty decent,” he said.
“I think most fans looking at that now would take that.
“Three wouldn’t be disastrous, but anything less than that would probably be viewed as not a great start.
“I remember playing in a side once that I think had one point after eight games and we still survived.
“So my message to the fans would be yes, it’s a tough start, but if it doesn’t go great then don’t lose the faith, because we have overcome worse.”

My concern is that we are limited as to the players we can sign by NC's insistance on a strict pay policy. We simply are not competing with the top half dozen clubs in the transfer market and if the club is indeed amongst the richest then that is just not tenable and shows a lack of realism not to say ambition. Saints are not a bank and while it is great running a tight ship trying to recruit bargains is not viable and is gambling with the club's future. What really takes the biscuit is this extraordinary lack of understanding some diehard fans have whose one and only slogan is in NC and NA we trust. its folly and some need to realise these people do not walk on water and are I think making serious mistakes.which will cost the club dearly. No good moaning if we cop a five nil beating on Saturday it will be too late to put things right.

Also missed out on getting Buttner to strengthen the Defence.
Goalkeeping situation not entirely sorted out - we lost Bart and got a similar player in to play second fiddle to Kelvin.
Need to spend and get in more quality.

Need to fight in the League Games - as if each game was a Cup Final to secure points.
Keep Barney etc for Cup Games where players will be too exhausted to fight in all competitions.

Although I do think the agents make things worse by raising prices and hanging the deals out to the last minute so they can extract the maximum from each transaction.
I would like to see the transfer window closed at midnight on the Friday before the season starts, with clubs having to submit their player lists by midday on the following Saturday, or have points deducted.
I am shocked by the blind faith some fans have in NC and NA but there again that is what religion is all about!

-think-pot-of-toss), we cannot generate teh income to pay wages to compete with the top 6 clubs; maybe not even the top 10. I want the club to be self-sustainin, not funded from the pockets of someone who might pull the plug any moment. So, we cannot sign anyonewe want; that's the blatant truth.
So, I trust NA & NC to know what we need, and know how to look for it. I also trust them to buy people who fit into the Saints system (playing and financial), without mucking everything up. And I trust them to do this because they've proved perfectly capable of doing it so far.
And if we dont get more than 4 points in the first 4 games, so what? The season is 38 games, and we wouldn't have expected much more than 3 points from those particular games anyway.
I keep the faith until I see reason to do otherwise, and I support the team & manager all I can during that process. I suggest we all do the same; the worst thing supporters can do is pass fear and negativity on to the players.
Listen to Red Army (and, of course, Confucious, who is a genius. Mad as a bag of monkeys, but a genius), and not the negative cr@p. Support!!!!!!

The UEFA Financial Fair Play rules which are being introduced will prevent rich owners from subsidising large operating losses (as in Chelsea and Man City).
Should eventually result in a more even league although the smaller clubs will always be at a disadvantage.

Agree that Kolo Toure would make a great signing, as would William Gallas to add top experience and character in the heart of defence. However, this goes against our transfer policy and breaking the wage structure for an ageing player may disrupt harmony with the playing group. I believe what has made saints great the past couple of seasons is that there are no 'marquee' players, and so better targets may be the lad QPR are looking at Kurt Zouma who looks quality and Danny Rose who had a great tournament at the olympics for GB, looks out of favour at spurs and could be the perfect alternative to Buttner. Also Lens, Butland and another CB would be nice but think were going to have to put faith in our scouting network... Be nice if they hurried up though!
Obviously the usual procedure for the purchase of a player in an already over abundant area is to offload to reload, but the reloading is take somewhat longer than expected and with the Premier League less than a week away, we don't have time to implement the potential signings into our tactic, so patience, hopefully new implented signings will be on show against Wigan.

I suggest we all do the same; the worst thing supporters can do is pass fear and negativity on to the players. Listen to Red Army (and, of course, Confucious, who is a genius. Mad as a bag of monkeys, but a genius), and not the negative cr@p. Support!!!!!!

As it is, everyone thinks we should strengthen and the club is trying but (and I think some people haven't quite grasped this) the market is very quiet, which is making things very difficult. People aren't going to sell to anyone if they're not confident they'll be able to sign a replacement. It really is that simple.

And if Wolves get their £15M that will be a gross profit of £8M which will be a net profit £6.8M after Burnley take their 15% of the profits. Not a huge return and then they have to replace him in a short times scale with all the selling teams knowing what they have to spend. So it is difficult out there to sign players at the right prices and wages. I appreciate that.
But, I do worry about our first 6 games and what it will do to the players confidence if we come out of it with say only 6 points or possibly worse. And yes I know it could be 10/12 but the odds against that are quite high I think.
And there is another thing of course. I can't stand losing!
And I don't subscribe to the idea that going down again will be O.K. because we will still be within the 5 year plan. I think we need to maximise the opportunity we have now. Not throw it away and return to the Championship where the 5 year plan could turn into a 7 year plan.
So I am sympathetic. But I still want a CB, LB, RM and a striker now! Then perhaps we can get 10/12 points out of the first 6 games and head for a mid table position early on.

As one who constantly complains about our lack of signings (I am happy with the ones we have made so far, but think we need another 4). I do however, have some sympathy with our management team when I see Wolves turning down £12M for Steven Fletcher and hanging out for £15M. What a joke £15M for a one in three striker who has played in two relegation teams.
Stop bricking worrying-back the boys to the hilt-you might be surprised or even bricking shocked..

Until we have 50,60 thousand attendances and millions of supporters buying merchandise all over the world we can't afford to pay high wages. It would be financial suicide. We signed 4 in July. If we get 4 more in during August we'll all be happy!
I'm hoping...
GK experience about £2m if we can't get butland at £6-8m.
LB - olsson. £3.5m
CB - dann £5m, Davies £3.5m or a class foreigner £6m.
RM - would love Matt Phillips £3.5m or lens £5.5m.
Total spend on these around £20m including clyne £2m, j rod £6m, Davies £1m, gazza £1m (£10m already) total £25-30m. It has to be around these figures to be competitive.

Until we have 50,60 thousand attendances and millions of supporters buying merchandise all over the world we can't afford to pay high wages. It would be financial suicide. So, those like montecristo who are acting like spoiled kids need to wind your necks in. 3 years ago if I thought I'd be hearing Saints fans moaning we can't afford Kolo Toure for our first season back in the Premier League I'd be jumping for joy that we still existed. Good times ahead. We will sign someone when we sign someone, same as every club. It's not exciting being so prudent and it is frustrating but if you don't like it, go support Barcelona or Man Ure.

I don't recall us ever having spent this much before and we are obvious trying hard to spend more! We know they want more players because they've said so. However not getting ripped off or paying wages that are out of kilter with the squad has to be a golden rule never to be broken. Breaking it becomes a habit and ends up in League 1 losing to Plymouth 3-0 with a team of kids and no prospect of improvement.

For those scratching their heads trying to remember which team had the biggest support at Wembley, let me help you; this team plays on the South coast and the name doesn't contain the word 'mouth'.
As for the topic, some good points made by the usual people (including Tony in Liberia, Tugboat, Alices Dad, Spud and - a bit new to me - Murray Mint and New Forest) but I think Retford summed it up early on, what we 'literally' need is for the Echo to unearth an ex-Saint (ideally one we've all long forgotten - who was that tiny left back that Dave Jones brought with him from Stockport?) who can suggest something utterly, utterly wummongous, like, 'Nige should sell a few of his senior players so that more of the youngsters get a game or two'. Until such time, these ex-Saints' views are a wee bit repetative and predictable. The most important point in Matt's interview is the very last sentence.
Still, it's a good night to be a Janner! Safe drive home Laff-a-mo, you wouldn't want to get done for speeding during that long haul home ...... from your local.

Like some are saying we had the same comments at the start of last season and we were in the TOP TWO all season. Dont get me wrong , i dont expect to be in the same position this season but, i cant understand why saints fans are shouting relegation..sack the manager before a ball has been kicked. We hav'nt won all our games pre season but i feel nigel learnt more from the 4..0 defeat than he did with the 2..0 win over wolves.
We all know were we need new players but we dont know what efforts the club are making behind the closed doors. The players that are on some peoples wish list just might not fancy living in our lovely part of England. Because of this they start shouting we lack ambition. Back to back promotions and we lack ambitions?? says it all in my book.
The club is being run within our means which is the only way forward . Wonder what they would be writting in three years time if we were back in administration??. Something along the lines of ...i told you so..
Keep up the good support from oversea's as it is valued by us over here. C O Y R.

Have a look on the BBC at the players they have signed. Including a CB Ramis who we were associated with.
I'm with Wobbly Cat and a few others. I understand the economic constraints we have, but this is the Premier League. And as for the defensive attitude of some who say it doesn't matter if we go back down because we are still inside the 5 year plan. Joke.

If that does happen, and I hope it doesn't, I think Nigel will be in danger of losing his job come October.
I am 100% behind the team and the manager but I think our current squad (without any additions in key positions) will struggle to keep out of the relegation battle.
And I don't think comments like MAN UP! and grow a pair (St Retford) will help us get many points in the P.L.
At the end of the day good football teams are made out of good players. I don't believe we have enough good players at the present time to keep us out of the relegation battle.
In the Championship that was never the case, we were always going to be in the top half of the league. At the moment we have a bottom 6 team in terms of the P.L. and I think we will struggle until the squad is improved in key positions.
