Rickie Lambert will score goals in the Premier League, says Matt Le Tissier

Daily Echo: Rickie Lambert celebrates scoring against Portsmouth Rickie Lambert celebrates scoring against Portsmouth

RICKIE Lambert can establish himself as a regular Premier League goalscorer, providing he gets the right service, according to Matt Le Tissier.

The Saints legend is a big supporter of the man who now wears his old number seven shirt and has scored 88 goals in just three years at the club.

Having never played at Premier League level before, Lambert will likely come under scrutiny in the opening weeks of the campaign.

But Le Tissier believes there is no reason to doubt the 30- year-old, providing Saints can create opportunities for him – something he is not sure they have done well enough in preseason.

“A lot depends on the system that we play and how much service we get to him,” said Le Tissier, pictured.

“From what I have seen so far this pre-season, I don’t think he has got great service.

“Maybe he will take a little bit of time to adapt to the new system.

“If it’s a Barcelona-style system they’re looking for then it’s going to take the players a bit of time to adapt.

“We’ll see whether they’ve got the quality to play that way and create the chances for Rickie.

“But I’m sure if he gets the service then Rickie will put them away.”

Manager Nigel Adkins has switched from the fluid 4-4-2 that served Saints so well the past two seasons to more of a 4-3-3 formation this summer.

The system involves three central midfielders, with one usually playing deeper than the other two, and a pair of wide players supporting a lone striker.

“It doesn’t look that comfortable at home,” observed Le Tissier. “It looks like a formation that might look better away from home.

“I think at home it maybe doesn’t put as much pressure on teams as you would like to see.”

So, should Saints be making the change?

“That question will only be debated when we get to Christmas and see how we are doing,” said Le Tissier.

“If we’re flying high then it will look like a genius decision.

“But if it doesn’t work then it’s a big call and that’s the stick he will get beaten with.

“It’s down really to how quickly the players adapt.”

I'm pleased that Nige is sticking with the equiangular polygon formation with a cyclic quadrilateral rhomboid, but Rickie, who's obviously best suited to the more traditional Reuleaux triangle, needs to get into the ellipse much faster.

If Lambert is a bit better than Holt (as a few people have said) then he will probably get 16/17 goals. Then again, if he gets good service he could be our next Shearer and smash in 30. Good finishing, strong, good in the air, not lightning quick but neither was Super-Al. He'll get a fair few assists too because he's good at holding up the ball. Last season he looked much improved and will definitely fit in. Anyway, Pompey fielded only three subs last night. One of them was a 15 year old. Chuckle.

Does MLT know that comments he makes stating the bl**ding obvious are being quoted every day? I imagine someone overheard him having a chat with his mates in a six-pies-and-a-pint queue somewhere.

Hasn't anyone asked Mick Channon about the new season yet? As an expert on betting odds his opinion would be more relevant than someone who nearly lost a few grand on rigging the first throw-in bets !!

No disrespect MLT, I'm just fed up with people using your name and comments to add credibility to what we know already.

It does give the experts like Confucious the chance to demonstrate their skills I suppose. He is fast becoming the new Bard.

The question I'm asking today, though, is for Seedhouse. What happened to your potential bid? Are you still intending to make a late, desperate land grab?

Rickie will score his fair share I’ve no doubt about it. The great news is that we have other goal scoring outlets as well who can help do some damage. That make us less predictable and takes the pressure off Lambo. Sharp is going to be a revelation this season, watch him take to the prem and look as if he’s been there all his career.

Rickie Lambert will be use as more of a play maker, supplier.
He will be used just behind the forwards, with his control and passing ability he will be a fulcrum of many of our attacks, particularly at home.
He is more than likely to be used as a single front man away in difficult matches.

For all the endeavours of the coaching staff - I thought they looked OK against Ajax once they sorted out their playmaker.
Seen nothing since - but we lacked any penetration, pace and goal threat that day.
Pretty sure the players are finding it hard to adapt to new formations, plus the new guys joining. Feel for Jay Rodrigues - we need to play to his strengths, he's obviously not a left winger!!
It is only a game and as long as they do their best and give 100% I couldn't care less if we get tonked every week!

To be more specific. There was not one jot of similar sympathy expressed during our troubles back in 2009.

It does Murray mint credit to show a degree of empathy. However there are limits.

Football is now a business, a corporate level business at that. They are bust. Britain cannot tolerate allowing bust businesses to trade and pull others down with them.

It is therefore very much in the interests of football, English sport, Team GB, and indeed the United Kingdom, that this club is finally scuppered, sunk and their community of supporters is allowed to invest their interest in some other sport.

Football is now a business, a corporate level business at that. They are bust. Britain cannot tolerate allowing bust businesses to trade and pull others down with them. Feel for Jay Rodrigues - we need to play to his strengths, he's obviously not a left winger!! It is only a game and as long as they do their best and give 100% I couldn't care less if we get tonked every week!
Getting used to a new formation(s) may be OK but may take time. The bigger worry is getting used to the awful NEW shirts. I've got a bad feeling about them

It is noble, MM, but I genuinely believe it is in the best interests of the decent skates (and there are some) that the current vestering puss ball of a club dies and a new club is started on a sound economic basis.

Given 10 years, it'll be back in the leagues and the fans will feel the same pride as was felt by Aldershot fans when they climbed their way back.

We want the same, a proper rival, we just have differing ideas on how to get there.

I've had an idea to help the skates.

We could try to assemble a team of Saints players most of us never got to see play. You know, the Ali Dias and Anthony Pulises of this world. We could unleash the team in a friendly match against the current Poopey squad. The funds raised by ticket sales could pay their admin staff for a few weeks. Meanwhile, by sponsoring the match at a thousand quid per goal, Seedhouse could dig deep to buy the paint needed to spruce up the Fratton End.

The selection criteria should be threefold: 1. Played fewer than three games for Saints; 2. stayed for more than a season; and 3. failing either of the above, must be called Ali Dia.

So, who would make the 11?

Tommy Forcast is a must for goalie, with Sandy Davies (made one appearance in the '70s and living in Oz) on the bench. Pulis and Dia would be in and the little left back from Stockport I mentioned in an earlier post. Then there were the ones who came because someone better signed - the Strasbourg player who signed with Spiderman and the Ecuadorean who came with Delgardo. Would Perry Groves get in? Those with better memories can fill in the gaps, but no more than 15 in the squad please, we wouldn't want an unfair advantage at kick-off.

Stranger things have happened.

There is actually a family who takes their pet snakes out for a walk around the common at weekends. Including a python.

They appeared on one of those wildlife programmes last year. Apparently the python got stuck in a car panel and they had to seek emergency help. They were parked outside the Coweherds. True story.

What has this got to do with Saints?

Nothing. But we thrive on diversity.

They are not fit to play anywhere in the league, it's past the point of no return. Not even a skate would want to go and watch them getting thrashed week after week.

Start again in the Wessex League and maybe the "bestest, bestest fans in the world" (both of them that is) will cheer them on for a play-off spot next season.

Put them out of their misery!

I do realize that all their recent success was due to cheating, but come on they are our only historical rivals.
Do we really want them gone.
'historical' rivals? Surely you mean 'hysterical' rivals, no?
Nice wordplay Strassie.
Please!
since that lot got themselves into their currant situation there has been numerous suggestions on how to help them.and guess what, they always get met with a load of abuse from the skunts, personally I think they need to go through the humiliation and embarrassment of liquidation to fully rid themselves of the shamefull history of their club.so as well intentioned as those sentiments are I dont think there is anything to be done for the them and the supporters trust will just prolong the pain for the poor old skunts.so it's fire up the old liquidiser for me!!!
currant situation? Sour grapes if you ask me.
