Blackpool boss Ian Holloway insists Matt Phillips will not be joining Saints after turning down a £5m offer

Ian Holloway Ian Holloway

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway has insisted he will hold on to Matt Phillips after turning down a £5m offer from Saints.

Phillips pulled out of the squad for the Seasiders’ 2-0 victory over Millwall after handing in a transfer request to try and force a move to St Mary’s.

But Holloway has no doubts he will keep hold of the 21-year-old winger and will make a stand to make his player honour his contract.

“I just want to keep the players I have here now,” he said.

“What we do we do together. We had a meeting about the Matt Phillips situation yesterday.

“The situation was so public I couldn’t lie to my players and tell them otherwise. He has handed in a transfer request but that means nothing.

“They (Southampton ) have offered £5m but we don’t need the money. So what can they do? The player is on a contract and he’s signed it.

“The lad (Phillips) is very disappointed and he is very stubborn and he didn’t feel he could play today.

“He was in my line-up until he told me that, and (Tiago) Gomes came in and he set up the first one so that’s the way it goes.”

Saints have only recruited four players this summer and have had messy public dealings over moves for Alexander Buttner, Phillips and Gaston Ramirez, who Bologna are still insisting will not be sold for less than £16m.

However, they are still keen to recruit new faces but for now, thankfully, concentrate again on the real business as they take on Manchester City in their first game back in the Premier League tomorrow.

Have never joined in on slating of the Echo, but the bit at the end got my goat. ONLY signed 4 players...lots of clubs have signed the same or fewer. Saints haven't done any dealings in public...it's the foreign newspapers and players that release the info. The Philips deal is the only one that may reflect badly on us and I'm not even sure of that I thoughta lot of people were being too touchy about this paper, but I don't now.

If we are guilty of tapping, which I doubt, it would seem very difficult to negotiate fairly with people who turn their phones off or change the numbers so that no one can get hold of them! Contacting a player would be the only way to find out which way the wind is blowing! Blackpool are behaving like a load of spoilt kids.

I think it's quite a vulgar, showy-off way of scoring goals. Cultured teams like us and Barcelona walk the ball in through 83 passes while smoking a fag and having a natter about the Eurozone crisis.

I know what you mean. For anyone who has spent the last three years following Saints around various cr@p towns doing their small bit to help nurse the club back to health, the visit to the Etihad will feel like a really far out dream. So the result really doesn't matter - the fact we're there is all that matters for now. I shall be singing and celebrating even if we only win by the odd goal or two.

Spare a thought for the poor Man U players. Their silly chairs used to be sponsored by Audi, who gave them all free cars. Now United have signed up with Chevrolet, the players have all got to give their Audis back and are being given rebadged Vauxhalls instead. My heart actually bleeds for them.

Everyone, I come in peace.

Please ignore laff (I always thought the word is laugh!!!!) a minute (is that a minute as in 60 seconds of time? or minute as in very miniscule and insignificant) and he will go away.

When you are out on a lovely sunny day having a couple of beers and a BBQ (or whatever takes your fancy), you will always find an annoying wasp that tries to get in your wine glass or on top of your burger. The more you flap and try and get rid of it, the more that wasp comes back.

If you just ignore that wasp, it will get fed up and go and find another wine and burger to infestate.

Laffaminute is that wasp.

Thanks for your time.

Are you actually a Pompey fan? If so why don't you worry about getting your £1000 to keep your club afloat for another week rather than being a sad'o on the SOUTHAMPTON echo website **** at SOUTHAMPTON fans because we are having good times? It must bother you, it's clear you are very very bitter because you spend every day on here! And don't worry about City stuffing us, if they do at least we will be playing the Prem Champions this season, instead of Crawley and Yeovil :-) that must gripe you and your small minded "friends" now jog on moron :-)

you really are funny, have you ever thought of making a living out of comedy? i havent laughed so much since i saw poopeys team sheet, a list of whos who of whos no one! i remember when saints were in that league that you have temporarily stopped of at on your way to the blue square south. we beat allmouth 3 times in 1 season. but we did do it with players we could afford though! your `team` lost any dignity it had left, yes i know there wasnt much left` when you had a team of players you cant afford playing for you instead of your youth team, like every other club in your position has had to. you are paying a bunch of players wages that should be going to the players that you forced and bullied out, because you had no money! think for 1 min what those players who left and havent got a club to play for must be feeling when they see other players getting wages that should be payed to them, do you think they will renegotiate now? goodbye to our fishy friends! still if you still want to watch football this season we wont mind if you watch the mighty saints, tv only though we dont want to disinfect sms again. oh and if we do lose to city i expect this forum to be full of your lot giving it loads, but just remember when you are sat at your pc typing with 1 hand (0ck in the other that we have just played the best team in the country and are in the prem and will be for the foreseeable, so if and that is if we lose enjoy the moment cause it wont last.

It's Saints playing Man City today not Portsmouth :-) The only oddball hillbilly fans are Portsmouths with Westwood and his freak show followers, it is not really normal dressing up like that and banging that drum and ringing that bell...... Quick prediction:

If Saints lose (and we probably will, given Man C's home record last season) then the usual suspects (Pompey fans plus our tragicomedic posters such as ghk, montecristo, etc) will be on here gloating that we're doomed and that NA must go.

If we draw then we'll just have been lucky and it'll all go wrong next game

If we win (and I stress, reality tells me how unlikely it is no matter how much I want it) then it'll be a flash in the pan that cannot possibly last.

Get your comments ready, Pompey fans (sic) and negativity kings.

It's going to be hard but it's one game and the hardest we'll have all season so let's not have too much bleating if we get a bit of a lesson! Wish we had got more defenders in for this one but sure (like laffaminutes c*ck) it's in hand.

I assume we're not after both Phillips and Ramirez so who's the better value? £16 million, if that's the price for Ramirez, is staggering!

Don't be silly, Retford, we'll be lucky to win by more than 4!
You've always been the sober realist of this board and I'm afraid you're probably right. I suppose four would at least put us in a Champions League position.
As long as we give a good accounting of ourselves we will have some positives from this game. I expect us to out hussle them and let them know we are there because we deserve to be!
Flip side is we stay out of the bottom 3 by avoiding defeat by 3 or more.
I'm wondering whether the lack of progress on a CB is due to NC leaving it to the last minute to get a bargain on Aug 31. He's presumably not expecting points at Man City anyway and we will beat Wigan at home with the squad we've got.
