Manchester City 3 Saints 2

This live event has finished

Latest

  • Manchester City beat Saints 3-2.
  • Dzeko and Nasri strike late to rescue game for champions.
  • Subs Lambert and Davis had put visitors 2-1 up after Tevez opener.
  • 17-year-old James Ward-Prowse starts his first ever league match.

5:58pm

FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 3 SAINTS 2. A fine effort from Nigel Adkins' men, who fought back from a goal down to lead 2-1, before City turned the game on its head late on.

5:52pm

Nigel Adkins has made his final throw of the dice, bringing on Billy Sharp for Jason Puncheon. The last two subs scored within moments of coming on, so you never know.

5:47pm

GOAL (80): MANCHESTER CITY 3 SAINTS 2. Clichy's cross from the left towards the back post looks harmless enough, but Fox inexplicably heads the ball sstraight to Nasri, who slams home from 12 yards out.

5:39pm

GOAL (72): MANCHESTER CITY 2 SAINTS 2. Kompany's shot from the edge of the area hits Toure and eventually drops to Dzeko a few yards out to sweep home and level the score.

5:35pm

GOAL (67): MANCHESTER CITY 1 SAINTS 2. Quite simply astonishing. Steven Davis receives a lay off from Lallana and fires a perfectly-placed right foot shot into the far corner. Like Lambert, the midfielder had only just been brought on when he scored.

5:26pm

GOAL (59): MANCHESTER CITY 1 SAINTS 1. Incredible! Rickie Lambert places a beautiful shot past Joe Hart to equalise for Saints moments after coming on. Slightly fortunate the ball broke for him just inside the area, but the finish was sublime.

5:22pm

55mins: Substitution for Saints. Jay Rodriguez off, Rickie Lambert on. City are all over Saints right now, though. David Silva clipped the cross bar from just outside the six-yard box.

5:19pm

52mins: Now it's Clichy's turn to miss from six yards. Yaya Toure's angled ball to the back post picks out his run, but the left-back blazes over.

5:16pm

49mins: Tremendous skill from Nasri to beat Clyne on the byline, before picking out Dzeko six yards out. The City striker makes a terrible connection with the ball, though, leaving Davis to comfortably pluck it out of the air.

5:09pm

Saints get the second half underway. They will be kicking towards their own fans in this half.

4:51pm

HALF-TIME: Manchester City 1 Saints 0. Saints have been under enormous pressure since conceding, and will probably be slightly relieved to have reached the break just one behind. Undoubtedly some positives for Adkins' men to take, but City look like they are starting to hit their stride.

4:44pm

GOAL (40): MANCHESTER CITY 1 SAINTS 0. Nasri's clever through pass released Tevez, who peeled off Fonte and slotted past Davis at his near post.

4:37pm

32mins: Tevez works some room on the edge of the area, but hits a tame shot straight at Davis.

4:33pm

Saints have reached the half-hour mark with the score still 0-0. The game descended into a quiet spell after the penalty miss, with Saints retaining possession well, but City are slowly beginning to exert a bit of pressure again.

4:21pm

MANCHESTER CITY PENALTY (17): Carlos Tevez is tripped in the box after turning Jos Hooiveld. David Silva steps up to take it and MISSES. A poor penalty - he almost passed it back to Kelvin Davis, who guessed the right way and made the save.

4:18pm

Manchester City have lost Sergio Aguero to injury. The forward damaged his ankle in a tackle from Nathaniel Clyne. No complaints about the challenge from the full-back, though. Edin Dzeko is on in place of Aguero.

4:11pm

Saints will be pleased with their start here. They have kept City at bay so far and have even managed a couple of forays deep into the hosts' territory. The game is still awaiting its first opportunity, though.

4:02pm

Manchester City get the game underway. They will be kicking towards the end housing the Saints fans...

3:58pm

The teams are on their way out of the tunnel to a huge roar from the supporters inside the stadium. Kick-off is in a few minutes.

3:40pm

The teams are out on the pitch at the Etihad Stadium for their warm-ups. The rain that has dogged Manchester for most of the day appears to have eased off, although it is still very overcast.

3:24pm

This from injured Saints midfielder Jack Cork on Twitter:

3:11pm

Substitutes:

Manchester City: Pantimilion, Kolarov, Savic, De Jong, Milner, Balotelli, Dzeko.

Saints: Gazzaniga, Lambert, S. Davis, Sharp, Richardson, Shaw, Seaborne.

3:10pm

The Saints team is now in, and there are some real surprises here. Rickie Lambert is benched, while 17-year-old James Ward-Prowse, who has never played a minute of league football, starts. Adam Lallana captains the side.

Saints: Davis; Clyne, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox; Ward-Prowse, Schneiderlin, Lallana; Puncheon, Guly, Rodriguez.

3:06pm

The Manchester City team is in. Those of a nervous disposition might want to look away now.

Manchester City: Hart; Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Clichy; Y Toure, Rodwell, Silva, Nasri; Tevez, Aguero.

3:00pm

Mancini on Saints in his programme notes: "Southampton are new to the Premier League and we congratulate them on winning promotion last season from the Championship. They will come here feeling that they have nothing to lose because people will say that they aren't expected to beat the champions on their own ground. We must make sure our attitude and mentality is correct from the start of the game. Southampton will have the excitement of being back in the Premier League and we must try to make sure that they do not enjoy their return - at least until next week!"

2:45pm

Welcome to the new season. Saints begin their Premier League campaign with arguably the toughest fixture that awaits them all year - an away trip to defending champions Manchester City. Can Nigel Adkins' team pull of a famous shock result, or will Roberto Mancini's side cruise to the victory that many expect them to? The Daily Echo will have updates here for you throughout the afternoon from the Etihad Stadium.

we will be fine beacuse of this:
`BBC Sport pundit Mark Lawrenson gives his predictions for the first round of Premier League matches

Southampton, in contrast, will be in a survival battle from the off and their biggest problem will be where their goals are going to come from.

It will come down to the half-chances. They are a bottom eight club and, for the clubs down there, someone who can convert those half-chances is worth their weight in gold.

Everyone keeps telling me Saints striker Rickie Lambert will score in the Premier League but they need him to weigh in the sort of goal tally Grant Holt managed for Norwich last season.

Saints boss Nigel Adkins is a shrewd guy and they will play some good attacking football but they need someone who can get 15 goals and, at the moment, I don't think they have one. ( no lawro we have 3-4 of them you numpty)
Prediction: 2-0`
if mystic lawro thinks this then we will finish mid table with Rickie Billy and J rod all getting hatfulls of goals! just look at his predictions for yesterdays games! he`s as good a pyschic as he is a commentator.
I myself am a great pyschic and i have just 1 prediction, i see many many fishy fiddlers all sat ready to watch the mighty saints play the mancs today, i see them cheering for the mancs on and dreaming of many goals, i then see them bombarding this site with all sorts of abuse about how bad we are and how we will go down and how they are the bestest bestest bestest fans in the world, they will tell us how good the mancs are, this despite previously slating them for ruining the game with all the money they spend! they will say how we tapped up players and how we must of failed in our attempts to match fix the game and how poopey must be the bestest team in the world!

totally disagree. the guy has been chasing, won critical ball and was quick and accurate with his passing. There will be changes shortly but no need to start the bash Guly brigade. This team is playing well against the premier league champions. First rate effort.. maybe a Ramirez or similar will add an edge to the squad but no need to knock the lads on this half.
COYR still plenty of time for a 1-3 victory

5:05pm Sun 19 Aug 12

They all look a bit nervous, hopefully 2nd half they have more of a go at em loose 1 - 0 or 10 - 0 it's still a defeat I'd like to see em come out and attack them, express themselves a little more and see what comes of it, no ones expecting a win away to the champions but if we could grab a goal and get a point it would feel like a win to me :)

Great start. Bring on the next team.
Our palce in this division will not come from playing teams like Man City, but the lower clubs and we showed today we are a force to be reckoned with. Great formation for most of the game. Excellent plan by NA and well executed.

Great team performance , Guly led the line well enough, lambert is a better link man, more clinical in his movementvand distribution , he also wins everything in the air. Far better than I expected we would do, v confident for the season ahead COYR!

OK so I streamed the game in the comfort of my home - and thought we did alright. There was a big gap in class - but our well drilled side kept it to 1-0 at half time.
Great to see Rickie equalise - and for a team with no pace we had 5 0n 3 on the break to make it 2-1.
Sloppy defending cost us really - but hey we knew that would be the case all along.
Really happy with the performance at last years champions - let's hope we add Ramirez and Philips before the end of August. Not sure where they will play - perhaps we will have to drop Lalanna?

I like the Daily Mail ("The Only True Word") because it upsets all the lefties - quite a lot. But now it has upset me since their review of this season said the Saints will be BOTTOM. Rubbish.

Well, they are very wrong and should admit it after this performance. The lads really tried and the City's third goal was such a shame, as that awful header "clearance" was just one of those things that happen.

If Saints play like this the rest of the season we can relax. Great stuff, great character and quite a lot of skill. But Manchester City are champions and the fixture list dealt us a toughie. But, it's out of the way and Saints are 14th in the table already!!

The Sky pundits were generous to the Saints in their after match review.

Please post other papers' comments on the Saints' prospects in their reviews of this season just being published. Be interesting to note any differences.

Well done, Saints - hold your heads high.

Dear oh dear, you lot must be more desperate than I thought? What a waste of space. Oh, and can the last one out of your disaster area remember to turn the lights off next week?

Nah, our right to claim we are a premiership team came with gaining automatic promotion at the end of last season, putting us in the top 20 clubs in England. We ARE a premiership team.

Today's game illustrated that while we have a long way to go if hoping to dominate the best we can at least compete with them rather than roll-over to them, and on that basis we hope to remain among the top 20 clubs in Britain.

The aim over the course of the season is of course to earn the highest place we possibly can and to hopefully continue an upward trend over successive seasons.

Nope didnt claim any such thing,re read my post-living in the real world ,as I do,we have only just got back to the top flight, but to be honest,I think we,ll hold our own quite comfortably. Now in pompey that would be a criminal offence.
As regards "dont cross the picket line",nipper,I come from that generation, research your history and I think you.ll agree,if you have the IQ,that its all hogwash.
I challenged you to debate footy matters and you come back with that tripe, would you like a good debate with some of the diehards on here or not? If you do reply politely, forget the childish rhetoric, its pointless.I await your reply and your meaningful deep rooted thoughts.
I should at this point ,point out that the footy topic can be anything meaninigful, even your own demise, and I will give a considered reply,Waiting.......

I think your lot should have gone up last season instead of Wet Spam.
When we visited your place last season I spoke to one of your stewards and asked if he thought that you would get promoted, he said we cant.
He said, we cant afford the cost to rise, due to all of the stadium changes that were proposed for the close season.

the most unsuccessful (1 l) saints! well done your doing your history lesson again arent you, success can be measured in many ways, cup/league wins could be 1 of them. consecutive years of top flight football could be another, being a well run top flight club with no debt another.
i think poopey are more successful than the mighty saints, yes i said it you are more successful than us at not paying taxes, at not paying your players wages, at ripping off charities, at blaming every one else for you troubles, at being in administration (3 times), but most of all you are the most successful club at bringing up your history! yes you won a league and cup 60-70+ years ago we know, you dont shut up about it. i will give you a little tip and listen very carefully i shall say this only once, WE DONT CARE!!!, history is a great thing but when all youve got to look forward to is your history then you really are in the poop!
enjoy your history because in a few weeks you will be.

ps i didnt mention the championship and cup you brought but have failed to pay for in the last few years. if you dont pay for it you cant keep it.

The last ten minutes showed Saints to be better than M City. I think it was the players who really needed to see that and from now on they should play with that confidence, swagger and attack. I'm not sure the Fox/JRod bit worked too well. Clyne/Puncheon showed how it should be done

Really happy with the performance at last years champions - let's hope we add Ramirez and Philips before the end of August. Not sure where they will play - perhaps we will have to drop Lalanna? Fans in good voice - Who the f*ck is laughing now - SKUNTS!

Laff, you are an idiot. Did you see how many saints fans made that trip? A long journey on a Sunday and we took well over 4,000 and being saints fans most of us have to work tomorrow after a long journey back. I bet you were seeing the empty seats near half time... News flash, most grounds have bars nowadays and so fans go and get a drink!

I can't believe you are thick enough to come on here when saints played a top side and played well.

Now, I'm not going to mention your team or pack the park, it's not worth it as you are too daft to understand the predicament your own club find themselves.

You come on here purely to get on people's nerves, but time to wake up, people on here find you funny, because most normal people would not be so idiotic as to poke fun at supporters of a team who are clearly in a far better position than you.

I rarely bother to respond to you, I probably won't ever again, but you are a first class fool who knows nothing about football, that much is clear from your idiotic posts on here today.

Well Toto, we are not in Kansas anymore - we are back in the Premier League!
We played a team that cost more than the GDP of a small country and came out with our heads held high.
What did we learn?
Lambert will score goals in the Premier League. 4 minutes - Brilliant!
Adam Lallana is Premiership quality.
Guly is fit and can chase back and defend.
Clyne can play and make important tackles.
Nigel Adkins is a quality manager who is not afraid to take a chance but can also change things with tactical substitions. He has the balls to give a 17 year old a league debut in a match of this magnitude. Adkins will send out a team to match the opposing side and have a game plan for each team. He has the conviction to keep his star player on the bench and then bring him on as impact sub if required.
Saints play as a team and work for each other.
Movement going forward can be electrifying even at this level.
The suppport was magnificent, singing to the final whistle.
We still need to strengthen the defence and the wings.
OK, City had a lot of chances but they didn't put them away. Pass for show and score for dough to paraphrase an old golfing adage. Lambert showed City the definition of clinical.
We are not up to the speed, movement and trickery of some of the City players and lessons will have been learnt. But there is no denying the passion and determination of the whole Saints team.
David Silva needs to watch the Matt Le Tissier 'How To Take A Penalty DVD' and there was some good fortune to all the City goals.
Overall a positive start but we still lost but this the beginning of the season and we usually start slow. There have been seasons in the past when I don't start my Christmas shopping until we win a game.
Can't wait till the Wigan game. That will tell us even more.
One word review: PROUD!

Nigel cant understand why you keep playing Guly ? nor not starting with Rikkie Lambert. You're playing into the hands of the hierrarchy. If we are ever in the relegation zone you'll be sacked and they willl use it against you !
Fair comment, but I think Nigel played the tactics just right on the day. I think he introduced Ricky at the right time, it created a new problem for City when they thought they had things sorted. I dont think Ricky would have had the same impact from the start in this particular fixture. It takes shrewd thinking from managers and Nigel did that yesterday in my opinion. I am sure Ricky will start more games, especially at home, but when playing the best team in the country the manager has to make difficult decisions.... I think Nigel will be fine, You know that when the pundits praise our performance it must have been good!

I am an optimist, but I honestly thought yesterday would be damage limitation and I was hoping we would not be bottom after our first game...As Jamie Redknapp said "You could see the managers personality out on the pitch"... That is very true!

I am so proud of this team.

He was good that Shakespeare but he didn't half speak in cliches.

Well done on Sunday, a tough match to start the season, to put it mildly! Having read through the comments, I think you should just ignore the wind ups from Pompey supporters, maybe they get a buzz from your replies? Thanks to Lee Barnard we drew at Pompey on Saturday....no thanks to our keeper who made a rare mistake! I can honestly say I didn't think I'd ever be grateful to a Southampton player, but credit where it's due.

Dear god almighty, such bitterness from our friends down the M27.

The result is what everyone expected. The manner of Saints defeat is so much more than we could have hoped for.

A great performance - the best positive I could see from that match was the fact that we were on the ropes for a while but we came back and took the game to Man City. Can't ask for more than that really. Need to bolster that defence up a bit but if we can turn in some more like that (with a better scoreline!) we will be on target for staying up. Can't ask for more than that really.

Its great to see one of the original Premier League teams back in the Premier League playing Premier League football with a great squad in a great stadium and no money owed.

The future is looking delightfully red and white.

yeah, I agree with this bloke who calls himself shLt.
What a performance, what a season we have ahead of us it couldnt be more opposite to the skunts.
Wait and see, we will be in the champions league in two years and they will still be sniping from the Beaxer Homes leage.. 'Its only a flesh wound, I could kick you with the other leg...'
What you gonna do? Bleed on me?

Was watching the game in Yorkshire - the pub goers (minus some Chelsea fan) all said Saints had played superbly and deserved something out of it. Very proud to be a Saint.

Much as I hate to encourage a troll, this post clearly demonstrates just how much you don't get Southampton and never will.

When we experienced all that trouble on and off the field and dropped down to League One there were quite a few rival fans queuing up to kick us and watch us fail. There was plenty of humble pie handed out to Southampton and its fans. More than a few so called fans from the other end of the M27 were first in that line.
Now I will accept that Saints fans have also handed out more than their fair share of humble pie to other fans whose clubs aren't doing so well. One might argue that this is Karma (or Just Desserts if you want to continue the food theme)

Now Saints are back where they spent part of the '70's, all of the '80's, all of the '90's and the early part of the 21st Century and it would appear that alot of so called fans from the other end of the M27 clearly cannot live with it. I say this because before Sunday, the posts from Portsmouth fans on this website were considerably less spiteful and vile than they have been since we put in that great performance against the League Champions. In fact, had it been Portsmouth playing against Man City on sunday I put it to you that you yourself would have been justifiably proud of that result.

Your argument that Saints don't win many trophies because 'they think they are bigger and better than everyone else' quite simply does not stand up to scrutiny. In fact it's a complete non-argument and taken as a statement on it's own it is clearly a spiteful, childish and ill thought out thing to say.

Saints have never ever claimed to be bigger and better than everyone else. Not once. In fact I challenge you to present a quote from any player or manager of our great club who ever said that.
The fans, of course, are a different matter - but I put that down to mere boasting and you could ask ANY fan from ANY team in the country right down to a sunday pub league team and I guarantee you that a significant majority would claim that their club is the greatest in the country and better than anyone else.
In fact you yourself have attempted to claim this very thing with your quotations of various attendance figures, cups won etc etc (as if these actually mean anything)
If you want to be swayed by the boasting of some rival fans, feel free - but please don't try to base a meaningful argument on it because it just won't work.

Now. Are you going to post sensibly or are you going to continue with the bile and hatred?
Your team need your support far more than they need you posting on the local news site concerning a team that is two leagues above you and planning on staying there for some time to come.
