Kelvin's praise for new skipper Lallana

Kelvin's praise for new skipper Lallana Kelvin's praise for new skipper Lallana

New Saints captain Adam Lallana has received the blessing of the club’s former skipper, Kelvin Davis .

Saints’ return to the Premier League has coincided with Lallana being handed the armband by manager Nigel Adkins .

The 24-year-old midfielder led the side for the first time in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Manchester City, nearly helping the club record a famous opening-day result against the defending champions.

Academy graduate Lallana, who has been with Saints since the age of 12, cut a proud figure at the Etihad Stadium, particularly as he strode out from the tunnel at the head of the line before kick-off.

And Davis insists there is no one else at the club he would rather see in possession of the armband.

“It’s fantastic for Adz,” he said. “He’s spent a long time at the football club and he’s come through the ranks.

“I’m pleased, he’s a good lad and a good friend, and I wouldn’t wish anyone else in the team to have it.”

Davis used to wear the armband himself, before he agreed with ex-manager Alan Pardew that an outfield presence would be more suitable.

The captaincy was given to midfielder Dean Hammond , while Jose Fonte skippered the side on the occasions of his absence.

Now, though, the baton has been passed again.

Davis, who has always retained the role as club captain, believes that Lallana has all the attributes to make both a magnificent leader and player in the Premier League.

“I hope that he can really go on and grow as a player in this league and, certainly, if he’s got the armband on while he does it then fantastic,” said the keeper.

“I think when you get that armband on it does give you something extra and it certainly gave something extra to Adam (at Manchester City).”

Lallana clocked up his 194th first-team appearance for Saints at the weekend, with Adkins revealing that he felt the time was right to bestow the honour on him.

“It again just epitomises the vision we’ve got,” said the manager.

“He’s been with us since the age of 12. He trains so hard every day and I think he’s now ready to go and be a leader, and at a young age I’m going to give him the opportunity to go and do that.”

Adam has always had that little xtra class and it is really good to see him progress. Morgan has surprise me but over the last two sesons his rate of development has been outstanding. Those two in midfield with JWP or Steve Davis bodes well for the future. So glad i am not a skunt. COYR 3 points agains Wigan on saturday please.

Good to see the club is rewarding Lallana for his loyalty, not many players with his quality would have stuck around after dropping to League 1 and going into administration. If he can stay fit and show the sort of form we know he can produce then I can see him getting an England call up.

Solid choice. The responsibility will also help him to keep a level head when he gets a little "over exuberant". A good move by Adkins.

If your reading this Adam well done to you, can't think of anyone else more deserving! If all the future academy scholars follow in your foot steps and have the same loyalty, work rate and talent then the saints have a great future!

Pleasing to see and well deserved, Adam is a true Saint. He's stuck with us unlike others who have jumped off the bus at the first opportunity (Ox), Adam is now sat at the back of the bus smoking and chucking sandwiches at people on the pavement, well stepped up.

Just found Ramirez real quotes..nothing about money....

“The truth is that I think, yes, this time I am moving,” the player said. “Bologna has reached an agreement with Southampton, and there are only a few details to be found but the agreement in principle is done. The English club has reached an agreement with me, it is the classic offer that you cannot refuse for my life as a whole and my family. But they believe in me in every way, I will be essential and above all they are going to grow. Southampton is a newly promoted team in the English top-flight but they will become a big team in years to come. They have told me they are going to build and that is very stimulating.”

I read this on Friday on the Sky Sports website. If this quote is genuine then sounds like he is happy with the terms, but obivously Saints can't reach an agreement with other parties which are involved. Personally, I think this deal will collapse. Everything sounded really positive on Friday and now I haven't heard anything apart from a story in the Daily Mail this morning.
I really hope it does go through, think he would be a quality signing. Part of me does think if the Ramirez deal falls through then Cortese will look at Walcott. Don't ask me why, I just have a gut feeling.

The trouble is the captain needs to be a outfield player that when fit is automatically picked for the side. Jos may be under pressure for his place once the new signings come in and Steve Davis is one of many midfielders who may get rotated alot. He didn't start Sunday and that's with an injured Jack Cork who played in every match last year.

I think he looked absolutely knackered by the end of it, but that was because of the shift he put in. I think it will have given him just the boost he needs to feel confident at this level.

Anyone who criticises NC for pulling out of a deal when the player spouts off to the media, should bear in mind that he has the clubs interest at heart (bigtime) and is up to speed with the tactics employed by foreign agents. Unfortunately "long memory" thats the kind of deals that NC has to try and pull off if we are to compete with the best. And that is the ambition that the club now carries forward.Perhaps as a burden.

All serves to highlight that it's about more than the 11 players on the pitch everyone at the club has there part to play in saints future success and all will have to learn quickly, management included, I have faith in our management team, but as the players have found out the opposition are alot more wily and trickier in the prem, this I think can be said for there backroom staff aswell! Not to mention the players agents, to succeed on the pitch it's vital we succeed off it aswell.

ive checked the italian press and it seems to me theRamirez deal is difficult because Bolonha do not hold the whole of his registration as Penarol have30 per cent. NC has to negotiate with both added to which Spurs may go back if Modric is sold at.least that is what the Bolonha President is hoping
Not being funny but why don't we just buy 70% of him? He only plays for one club even though another club has 30% ownership. Let them keep their 30% we have 70% and he plays for us.

Surely the two clubs must have made an agreement as to what would happen if and when he got sold on. It's not rocket science!
Unless I am mistaken in the UK part purchase of registrations are not allowed remember the Tevez saga clubs must acquire all of a players registration and third part ownership is banned. This being the case NC would have to get a binding option from Penarol before dealing with Bolonha otherwise they could hold a gun to his head.I live in a latin country and am no stranger to contract law there so id say this is the problem.
These chairmen and agents earn vast sums of money surely to god they've got a little bit of savvy! If they agreed a split ownership someone must have posed the question: 'what shall we do if someone comes in for him?' Maybe if the 70% owner accepts a bid the 30% owner has to take a pro rata amount? They must also have been aware that the big bids would come from the Prem and as you rightly say English football doesn't allow split ownership.

Ye gods!

Don't think iv gone soft on pompy because of my last post. I'd still sell my soul to the devil to beat em (not that that will be needed for the foreseeable future) ;) I just tire of the hate that infests these forums from both sets of fans. Infact if it were legal can wouldn't jeopardise saints future I'd have us buy a share in pompy along side the supporters trust, with a view to the trust buying us out somewhere down the line

He played a blinder Sunday as did the whole team, punched above their weight.
A bit of class is required, cortese don't penny punch and get some in.
A centre back now is a must...... Enter gallas
Yep, Im surprised cover for this position hasnt been brought in by now,but I suppose the best deals are late deals.
Makes me slightly nervous if we get an injury to jos-still sure their trying.
I see buttner has signed for man u,a classic case of the player going public on a deal to try and get a better move.
I just hope ramirez,s agent isnt playing the same games. Good job we have NC at the helm to ensure saints dont get ripped off.
We need more strength in depth for sure, but its on the way.
What about the keeper, we desperately need cover for that.
But this is saints,we ran man c close,so should do OK-bar injuries.
Tugboat, you could well be right. If these players are playing the mercenary card, maybe we are better off without them, as good as they are.Our strength in recent seasons has been team work, and these players may not fit into that mould.
There are defenders out there, bassong has just gone to Norwich and Michael Dawson is possibly going to qpr.
I think Ramirez deal is over and was possibly encouraging an auction, don't think the position he would have filled is as critical as central defence/ keeper.

Nobody was slating him, you made a comment about him having the weight of the world on his shoulders, and I replied saying he looked like he coped really well considering the circumstances.
I don't think Nige signed S.Davis purely to be a captain, I think he signed him because of his experience and footballing skills.
If Nige decides to give the armband to someone else now then would could that do to Adam's confidence? Adam deserves the armband he stayed when others left and helped pull us out of the trouble we were in.
Le Tiss was captain probably because of the same reasons as Lallana. They are both loyal, quality players and clearly love the football club. Le Tiss wasn't particuarly vocal on the pitch but he lived and breathed Southampton Football Club and therefore lead by example. You don't have to be vocal to be a good captain.

Whoever you are, and you could be me for all I know, I'd like to add that I enjoyed watching the match with the little Strassies before taking a hike back to France. As to the question about 'time', I had a somewhat similar experience at the start. I checked the clock to see if half time was upon us and it read '15 minutes'. I know Prem matches cost a lot more, but if every 90-minute match is going to last four and a half hours in my imagination, I'm in.

I rose an eyebrow when I saw that Adam was captain and I still have very mixed views. My trouble is, I compare every new Saints' captain to Alan Ball and always come up short. However, he's definitely worth a try, and, as you say, it could be like Gerrard at Liverpool (but without the silly voice, of course).

Lets hope he does well. Just seems there could be a lot being put on him in his first season in the Prem. The expectancy is high.

I could of understood it once we had bedded in. Just thinking he may need to find his feet in this division.

Too much of a puzzler that.We can measure time through motion but nobody knows what it actually is. It can't be stopped and studied under a microscope or experimented with. It just keeps passing non-stop and we can't tell why.

Worse still the present is an unimaginably tiny thing as it instantly becomes the past. And of course the future does not exist at all.

Nonetheless, the present is essentially a state of consciousness/awaren

Still, in two days, tomorrow will be yesterday so just when you think tomorrow will never come, it's yesterday.

I agree , I like the banter ,but now they have taken a hike were back to saints things, matters that concern us all. Its refreshing.
A few posters ,including me ,have even challenged them to come and talk, footy matters to no avail.
My policy is now to skip past the trolls and unfortunately the responses.
This is about saints-no-one else.
If I feel the urge to converse with the blue few-they have their own site I can visit. But have no desire to.
Skunt alert!

Watch out that skunt who has copied Bad Bill and Osprey's login is now impersonating tugboat and landdo.

Got to stay alert, those pesky skunts!
It looks like the Echo has cleaned out the nuisance posts, my thanks to them, I was suffering from a serious sense of humour failure earlier!
