Southampton target Alexander Büttner joins Manchester United from Vitesse Arnhem

Alexander Büttner Alexander Büttner

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of defender Alexander Buttner from Vitesse Arnhem on a five-year contract.

The left back was a target for Saints earlier in the transfer window.

Buttner is moving to Man Utd for a £3.9m fee, believed to be almost £1m more than what Saints had agreed to pay for him.

His move to Saints collapsed after the intervention of 'a third party' according to Vitesse, which was demanding more money.

The Dutch club however did make it clear that Saints had acted totally above board and were in no way to blame for the collapse of the deal.

The frustrating part is the way Saints' interest was turned into a method of alerting other clubs to the player. I fear this is the same thing that Bologna have tried to do with Ramirez but, fortunately for us, there are no bigger bidders. At least this shows we're going for quality signings.

ive checked the italian press and it seems to me theRamirez deal is difficult because Bolonha do not hold the whole of his registrationh as Penarol have30 per cent. Spurs are reputed to be going for him if Modric is sold as is likely

He's already turned down a move to Spurs.

This is annoying and totally agree with SlupsPups comment. I think Bolonga are waiting for the Modric deal to happen and stalling with Saints and wanting to push the price up to 15 million (or more than 12 Million at least) We have offered him crazy money and he is happy so lets hope this is enough to get this deal done and put Spurs off! Come on NA where are the CB's?

Sorry to say that our transfer dealing seems to leave a lot be desired from the outside eye.

Hooper, Celtic angry at us
Clyne, Palace angry at us
Buttner, unable to overcome outside interference.
Phillips, accusations of illegal approach.
Ramirez, deal done then it`s not.
Davis, signed him then realised we had to pay a fee after all.

Maybe these aren`t all necessarily our fault but there is a distinct pattern of things that are supposedly done in the proper manner not being quite so well done.

Believe me i`m a big fan and won`t hear a bad word said about the club or NA, but i wonder if NC uses the same skillls negotiatibg with other clubs that he used in the debacle with trying to charge photographers to take pictures.

I really hope that the Ramirez deal comes off, we were actually top of the news stories on Sky for an hour or so the other day, i consider the loss off Buttner to a prem rival a great loss, if he`s good enough for a 5 year deal at Man U, then i`m sure he would for us.

Whatever happens, mighty proud of the boys and especially to the back line who i`d so wrongly worried about.

Rumour has it that the "third-party" involved in the Buttner deal WAS Man U all along... They had been interested in Buttner for over a month but hadn't come in with any official bid (looking at other targets first).

So we put in our bid, Vitesse accepted, but Buttner and his agent were stalling waiting for a bid from United which didn't come. I imagine NC took exception to that so we walked away. Vitesse got angry at his antics trying to manoeuvre a move to a club that hadn't put in an offer despite there being a firm bid on the table from Saints so threw him in the reserves. Man U's other left sided targets fell through, they put in a bid for Buttner. Voila.

No idea about the others!

Why are you worried if we have upset other clubs. They either didn't want to sell to us, which is fair enough or when they did sell to us they wanted more than we paid. I would be very surprised if we have made an illegal approach because with the press and agents as they work today there is no need to make an illegal approach, We try to do deals without the press circus that surrounds football, and I am confident that NC will deliver quality players to the club. Hooper,Buttner and Ramirez show the quality of the players we are after. It is unlikely we are going to be signing 30 something prima donna's becaue they don't fit the profile of what NC is trying to achieve.Young hungry players from either within or outside the clubto grow and build over the next 3-5 years. We are ahead of schedule in the masterplan, we have one 17 year who has already palyed, Luke Shaw waiting in the wings and other catching up at a rate of knots.Be positive and keep the faith.COYR

Really don't see why we get so worked up about transfer rumours. All just goes to show that NC & NA are right to say nothing publicly until a deal is done. That way no one doubts they are genuine, dignified professionals that know how to conduct business properly. The people that look daft are the loudmouths like Holloway, greedy chairman like the Bologna guy and (bless'em) the simple minded players like Ramirez who get overexcited and give interviews before a contract's signed.
Those with high blood pressure should wait for the official site. In the mean time be reassured that no one will be pulling on a Saints shirt unless they really want to be with us.

First class language Shaun! Says it all about you!

Just a few points to think about. Are you in the room when NC is negotiations? Just a guess, but I say no. So how can you comment on the mans ability/ methods? Added to this the simple point that NC is negotiating for Southampton FC, not to please others. Moreover Shaun, NC has delivered on so many levels already that some people like you are never pleased. NC is archiving more in the transfer market as well than any previous board!

Your other issue Shaun, about charging for photos. Many other clubs do this as a matter of course and make thousands of pounds from it! So NC has changed something to make us run like a proper business bringing money into the club, and that's bad?

Buttner was a third party wanting money, and NC must of said not at our club expense. Hooper was not angry! May be Lennon a little. Davies was a strewed bit of business and was never going to be simple due to Rangers plight, which would you want Saints to pay over the odds here to appesie a struggling club like Arse did to us?! Rameirze is not done but will be, but that negotiation clubs have to go through. Clyne upset palace...well yeah Shaun he the best signing so far, I would be upset if I was palace! Lastly little arrogant Holloway! You belief this FOOL! NA has said he talking CRAP! Who do you believe? Lastly with all the above, has it accrued to you they all want MORE MONEY from Saints?

Your points are not facts.

Thanks for your comment. I'm no Pompey fan, but talking of professionalism and dignity, I think Michael Appleton deserves massive credit for what he's doing for your team under unbelievably difficult circumstances. Hooper, Celtic angry at us - because we wanted to sign their best player and they didn't want to sell him, so what?
Clyne, Palace angry at us - ditto, he was out of contract and we pay compensation when it's settled.
Buttner, unable to overcome outside interference - how is this our fault?!
Phillips, accusations of illegal approach - no evidence that it's Saints who made the 'illegal approach'; could've been Everton who are also interested, may have been no one. NA has clarified it wasn't us.
Ramirez, deal done then it`s not - we did everything by the book and now Bologna want more money - not exactly our fault!
Davis, signed him then realised we had to pay a fee after all - we never thought he would definitely be free; Rangers pwner always said from the very beginning that they would legally challenge any attempt to buy their players because of the newco situation. We eventually decided to give them a bit of compo to stop it going to court - and why not?!

Anyone know what is happening to this deal posted on footylatest.com:

"Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton are ready to go head to head for the signature of Saint-Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the 23-year old Gabon international ready to make a move away from the Ligue 1 club.

Both clubs had their scouts watch Aubameyang during Saint-Etienne’s 2-1 loss at the hands of Toulouse on Saturday, and impressed by what they saw of the youngster, could be ready to make formal bids by the next week.

Clubs get angry when they fear losing their best players like we did with Wenger when he took Walcott and then later Oxo who we had repeatedly said was not for sale. Wenger chose not to listen and constantly undermined the player until he finally left. It's the old story of if a player wants away he goes despite having a contract - Holloway is about to learn that lesson, it cuts both ways.
