Gaston Ramirez's move to Southampton balances on how payments will be made

Gaston Ramirez Gaston Ramirez

GASTON Ramirez’s potential record move to Saints has taken another twist.

The protracted transfer saga is still not complete despite more talks between Saints and his Italian side Bologna.

Sources in Italy maintain that the clubs are more or less in agreement over a fee – but cannot agree terms on the schedule of it being paid.

Saints are believed to be prepared to meet Bolgona’s demand of 15m euros for the Uruguayan winger, pictured left, which is about £12m.

Ramirez’s former club Penarol, who still own 30 per cent of the player, are also understood to have agreed a deal with Saints to sell their share in him.

The sticking point remains a payment schedule, with the clubs struggling to find common ground. Bologna are insistent that they want the vast majority of the cash – as much as 10m euros – up front to allow them to go and buy replacements, with the rest of the cash coming within a year.

Most clubs though do try to follow the path that Saints wish to take which is to spread the payment over a longer period, often the length of a player’s contract, which in this instance would be four years.

The player himself is understood to still be very keen to come to St Mary’s, become the club’s record signing and highest ever paid player on wages estimated to be £60,000-£70,000 a week.

It is understood that other potential suitors for Ramirez in the shape of Tottenham, Liverpool and Inter Milan are looking elsewhere at this moment in time.

Saints are keen to get the deal done having put so much work into it and with time ticking down until the close of the transfer window, but will only complete the transfer if they can come to what they regard as acceptable terms.

The 21-year-old Ramirez would fit into Nigel Adkins ’ squad as an attacking talent, and would probably occupy one of the wide positions supporting the main striker in the new 4-3- 3 style formation.

Ramirez started his career at Penarol in Uruguay but was snapped up by Bologna two years ago for 2.5m euros.

He has gone on to score 12 goals in 58 appearances for the Italian side and won nine caps for Uruguay.

He was most recently seen playing for his country in the Olympics .

Sorry about that last post, I had one of those strange moments I now realise we all suffer on here from time to time. You know, like when fellow Saints fans say that NA isn't up to it, NC doesn't have a clue or the Leibherrs will pull out soon, or when skates say they have a proud history, the bestest fans in the world or will be back in the prem in a couple of years.

I'd always assumed it was people talking b0ll0cks, now I realise it's just one of those strange, 'tales of the unexpected' moments that only Confucious can properly explain.

Anyway, just to really get up certain people's noses early in the day, in NC/NA we trust!

Plus, didn’t we demand a massive chunk up front for your AOC. Bologna will want to re-invest so can understand where they’re coming from.

The salary quoted is way off the mark. We have a wage structure at SFC and it is unlikely he will be offered significantly more than Lallana or Lambert. Based on more accurate reports elsewhere, this is likely to be around £28,000 pw.

We also have a policy of not borrowing money to fund transfers (from the bank or the Leibherrs). It could potentially be commercially suicide for the club to pay the fee up front. Either Bologna wise up and compromise or we move on to other targets.

Notice they also no longer have names on the players shirts too, as its first come first serve. Did you see their winger last night with huge shorts on, and the full back had to wear his own socks.

No way we're in the £60-70k leagues - too much boat rocking if we start heading that way.

However, i suspect the wage structure is a bit spurious when it comes to the bonus structure that we layer on top of the salary.

I expect once won transfer goes through then they will all start to move. We are still in the hunt of Phillips but if he isnt going to go for £6m then that limits us on what we can pay upfront for Ramirez.

If we had bought Scott Dann and then had seen Dawson go for 2.5m more I would have been fuming.

Although all of this is taking its time- and as long as we get some names in before the end of the month- I have been happy with the way Saints have conducted themselves so far with our targets.

Phillips:
was on my wish list at the end of last season- along with Zaha who we have also been linked with, but not going to happen.

Jay Rod: scored some great goals last season in an average team and offers us a bit of airial threat if Ricky is injured which we were seriously lacking.

Clyne: appears to be a great signing and we beat of some major teams to get him in.

Buttner: althought the man couldnt even get on the bench for a team dubbed by their nationals as 'the team with no left back', i'll let Sir Alex pull rank and ill concede there must be something decent about him.

now I know the bullets amongst you are going to point out we haven't signed all of these but they are all plays that I would want at our club. Id prefer that then the graveyard shift at QPR.

For all those saying just pay the cash and get on with it, well maybe we can't?

The family bankrolled our promotion and converted 30m debt to equity. They may have said to NC he can spend the income from the Prem but there will be no more cash from them. That income comes in during the course of the season and not as a big chunk. It maybe we simply don't have the cash to pay up front and can only pay as and when we receive Prem money ourselves. We also have to allow enough cash-flow for the other players we are after who won't be cheap either.

To everyone that is moaning about transfers we've already brought in a few and promoted from within . . .

I don't remember a summer when we've added 7 new faces too the team and spent so much money.

I see Danny N'Guessen is being linked with his 6 monthly transfer movement again! Poor Guy no-one wants him! (Not that I blame them)

Also what about Dale Jenning, went to Bayern last summer (or the year before) he must have learned a few more skills by now and was pretty fast, would be a good bench warmer with some pace to burn against tired legs with 10 minutes to go - loan?

SaintJD says...
11:01am Wed 22 Aug 12

Whether this signing comes off or not, I think Saints fans can feel pretty comfortable that NA and NC will do the right thing for the club. I do think defensive signings are needed, but elsewhere I think we have enough, anything else is just a bonus. My gut instinct is that we should stick firmly to our policy of buying players who are happy for the opportunity to play in the premier league - young and a good fit in the dressing room. Clyne is a great example, which is why I think Phillips is a safer bet. Both Buttner and now Ramirez seem a bit too self obsessed and quick to go public for me. Team spirit and togetherness will keep us up this season, not individuals. Yes, if his wages fit in, fantastic, but I would never risk creating a two-tier dressing room, especially when we have built such a tight unit.

I think what we all have to remember is that these transfer deals, and the contractual negotiations that take place along with them are a lot more complicated than they sound. Anyone who had worked (as I have) in trying to negotiate contracts and large business deals knows that there are a lot of influencing factors outside of just the four parties (player, agent, and two clubs) being broadly in agreement on the value of the deal.

With regard to some of the people we have missed out on, us simply wanting to sign them doesnt alway mean that they want to come to us (foolish for them, but true!).

Buttner - Looks good, but sounds like they were waiting for Utd to decide on making an offer and we were put on hold.

Michu - Good player, but I am not sure he didnt choose Swansea over Saints, due to the Laudrup factor?

Phillips - I like this guy and it seems he wants to come to Saints. It depends on the Blackpool Chairman, but hopefully we will get him in the next week.

Ramirez - Trying to bridge finance payment schedules with upfront loans is commonplace, but nevertheless harder to do in Italy than it is here. They will be wanting to get upfront fees to sign the player to replace him. I actually think this signing will happen, unless it is a ruse by Bologna to delay until a club offers a higher upfront fee i.e. Liverpool.

The real business that we need to do is sign a quality centre-half, or two. I am not sure 9m for Dawson is good value given his perpetual injuries, and we dont need to bring in 1 year journeymen like Carvalho either.

I suspect that the transfer market is stuck a little at the moment, once a couple of the big deals go through i.e. Modric, Hulk, etc that usually frees up the market as there is then the money in motion, clubs wont sell until they know the player they want to buy is available, and likewise his club will feel the same.....it's chicken and egg!

This will all happen over the final 3-4 days of the window, it always does, as that is when something has to give in negotiations - until then it is a staring game!

I await the fun and games, come on Saints!!!

They do need money, but they need cash rather than payment plans. Is we have offered 3m upfront with further payments staggered over the 4 year contract then you can see that doesnt get them over their current issue.

They have been trying to take out a bank loan, using the payment plan from Saints as collateral against that loan.

So that way they get 12m upfront from the bank, with saints only paying as per the payment plan.
