4:54pm

FULL-TIME: SAINTS 0, WIGAN 2

4:52pm

GOAL: SAINTS 0, WIGAN 2 (Kone 90). That seals it. Kone dispossesses Fonte on the right, drives into the area and smashes a low effort past Davis.

4:45pm

Hooiveld's looping header from Lambert's cross hit the top of the bar in the 79th minute. Kone had a great chance to finish the game off two minutes later, but slid his shot just wide of the post after exchanging passes with Gomez.

4:39pm

Couple of changes for Saints made in the 75th minute. Steven Davis and Rodriguez off, with Ward-Prowse and Sharp coming on in place of them. Lambert forced a save from Al-Habsi in the 64th minute, but it is Wigan who have been in control of the game. Davis made a good stop from Latics sub Gomez's stinging 20-yard strike in the 67th minute.

4:21pm

Danny Fox forced a good save from Al-Habsi in the 55th minute, controlling the ball 25 yards out and driving a shot back in after the Wigan keeper had punched Lallana's corner clear.

4:14pm

GOAL: SAINTS 0, WIGAN 1 (Di Santo 51). Nice move from Wigan. Boyce plays the ball into Maloney on the edge of the area. He slides a little pass through to Di Santo, who fires into the roof of the net. The goal came a minute after Lambert had tested Al-Habsi from Guly's cross.

3:49pm

HALF-TIME: Saints 0, Wigan 0. Nigel Adkins' team edged that half. Certainly the more positive of the two sides, but chances have been few and far between.

3:46pm

The game has gone very quiet since Lallana hit the bar. Clyne's through ball in the 23rd minute nearly released the midfielder, but Caldwell got across to cover. Fonte did well to deflect behind Figueroa's volleyed effort across goal just after the half hour.

3:19pm

The captain's armband looks like it has inspired Lallana. He turns 25 yards out in the 14th minute and unleashes a ferocious shot. It's heading for the top corner, but the fingertips of a flying Ali Al-Habsi do enough to tip the ball onto the crossbar.

3:14pm

A bright start from Saints. Lallana's delivery from the left wing in the third minute was just too high for any of his teammates and found the arms of Wigan keeper Ali Al-Habsi. Caldwell then did well to block Lallana's sixth-minute shot, after the captain had chested down Danny Fox's cross into the box.

2:59pm

The teams are out at St Mary's. A huge roar greets Premier League football back to the stadium. Just a few minutes until kick-off.

2:23pm

Two changes for Saints this afternoon. Rickie Lambert is restored to the starting line-up by Nigel Adkins, after coming off the bench to score at Manchester City last week. He replaces Jason Puncheon. Steven Davis, who also netted at the Etihad Stadium, takes the place of 17-year-old James Ward-Prowse in midfield.

Wigan make one change to their side, with Arouna Kone coming into the line-up in place of Victor Moses, who completed a £9m transfer to Chelsea yesterday.

2:14pm

LINE-UPS:

Saints: K Davis, Clyne, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox, S Davis, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Guly, Lambert, Rodriguez.

Subs: Gazzaniga, Richardson, Seaborne, Shaw, Ward-Prowse, Puncheon, Sharp.

Wigan: Al Habsi, Kone, Alcaraz, McCarthy, Caldwell, Di Santo, Maloney, McArthur, Boyce, Ramis, Figueroa.

Subs: Pollitt, Jones, Crusat, Watson, Gomez, Boselli, Beausejour.

Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire).

1:44pm

You know you are going to get something you don't know when you face a newly-promoted side. I think we need to look back at the experiences we had last season where we faced Norwich, Swansea and QPR in the first three games, and probably two years back when we had another newly-promoted side in Blackpool. You play a side full of energy and enthusiasm and look at Southampton – if you had any questions about how they were going to adapt at this level, look at the fact that they scored two goals at the Etihad Stadium from open play. I think that answers everything. They are going to be brave, really enthusiastic and have a very special environment, and we have to be able to cope with that. We have done in the past, and we need to make sure that we are ourselves. It is going to be a tremendous fixture.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez

1:40pm

Wigan have done magnificently over the years. Roberto Martinez is a very intelligent manager, they play a very good way and they have survived in the Premier League against all the odds. It is a club I was at myself as a player so to see them in the Premier League consistently over the last several years is amazing and great credit should go to them. We're under no illusions. It will be a tough, tough game for us. Probably the Manchester City game you're not expecting us to get anything from. The game against Wigan Athletic, we've got to look to get the three points from.

Saints manager Nigel Adkins

1:21pm

TEAM NEWS: Wigan have already suffered a blow ahead of the game, after forward Victor Moses completed his £9m transfer to Chelsea last night. Winger Jean Beausejour missed last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat against the Blues due to a hamstring problem and is a doubt today, along with James McArthur (back) and Shaun Maloney (dead leg).

1:19pm

TEAM NEWS: Midfielder Jack Cork continues to be sidelined for Saints, following the ankle injury he sustained in a pre-season friendly at Bristol City. Tadanari Lee is continuing his recovery from a long-term foot injury and could earn a place on the bench.

1:03pm

Good afternoon and welcome to the Daily Echo 's blog for this afternoon’s Premier League contest between Saints and Wigan, at St Mary’s Stadium (kick-off 3pm). This is the opening home fixture of the season for Nigel Adkins’ men, who began their campaign last weekend with a memorable performance in a 3-2 defeat at defending champions Manchester City. The pressure is on a bit more today, though, with this looking like the club’s best chance on paper of picking up a win in their first four games. Wigan are also coming off an opening day loss, after Chelsea beat them 2-0 at the DW Stadium.

We will have the teams for you as soon as they becomes available, as well as updates throughout the match.

i still think ramirez will sign, hes been left out of his bologna side this weekend, hes on strike as him and his agent are pushing for a move to saints,

matt phillips and tom ince would also be useful and a much better option than guly.

We need more signings and I'm sure they will come.

Stras, If you can get to Arsenal, let's try to arrange something.

Kings Lynn Saint says...
5:02pm Sat 25 Aug 12

We didn't play badly. We created chances again, just needed to be a bit ruthless in front of goal and a bit more luck was needed and we could have scored.

At the back, a couple of defensive frailties and a foul on Jose and we end up on a 0-2 reversal.

I know people will say it was only Wigan, and against better teams we'll struggle, but this is their 8th season in the Prem and are no mugs.

It's going to be a long hard season, but I'm confident we'll get the right players in over the next few days (and no panic buys) and we'll be OK.

My prediction is finish 15th.

And look on the bright side, the Skunts got stuffed!

PATHETIC display in midfield! Wigan kept that ball control as if they were in training in the second half. ENOUGH with Guly already, the guy is good but not Premiership quality! Reality check (not reaction)-
Fonte- not good enough
Ward Prowse - need to be "blooded" over time, still a boy, too much too soon!
Midfield was not dominant- need a dominant game changer.
Wingers were weak, especially Guly.

Shopping list:
Goalkeeper (better than Davis)
2 Central Defenders (one who can play all across the back
1-2 wingers
and
1 Central midfield player
oh sure... and a high quality striker!

Thoughts?

mastershot100 says...
5:10pm Sat 25 Aug 12

WHY ALL THE EMPTY SEATS?

Strasbourg Saint says...
5:10pm Sat 25 Aug 12

Note to moaners:
Please, take a balanced view.

This was frustrating and annoying, and, as others have said, it's a wake up call, but we move on - as one..

Wigan used their knowledge of this level to show us how to win ugly away. Their first was top draw, their second ....... well, we all saw it.

Yes, we all know we need more quality and that will come. Spam think they've bought quality and maybe they have, but they got thrashed today. So, those wanting lots of signings and changes, take heed, that route won't build a team.

As for moaning about certain players, as frustrating as Guly can be, he was as good - and as bad - as several others, so leave it out.

Wigan had three moments of class in the second half and scored the first. We had no luck today and will play worse and win. But, yes, more quality at the back and more creativity up front is needed.

Three positives:
We controlled large parts of the game.
We learnt a lesson and that will be taken on board.
The signings will come and the team will improve.

One negative:
There are no easy games up here.

Now off to pray to St Odile, patron saint of Alsace. :)

Have a good evening (morning/afternoon) all.

It was dreadful. If they are seasoned Premiership veterans, as you state, please bear in mind that based on last season's outcome, there are 16 other better premiership teams than them in this league.
I admire your optimism, but we have to seriously bolster this squad and complete signings.

Lambert didn't start the Man City game as we wanted to bring him on when the City defence was tiring. He came on and scored straight away. Stop talking rubbish. We played terribly today but how anyone can talk about Lambert not starting at City is beyond me. It was tactical genius. And please stop saying Atkins and making a fool of yourself.

Just home from watching match on tv - after first 20 minutes I feared for the worst - team lacks discipline and need new faces. On this performance Lambert has reached his peak and wont repeat his scoring feats from previous seasons. Not impressed with the attitude of the team once they went behind,

Stras. While I agree with keeping both positive and balanced, I really do- I get tired of us depending on "luck" a lot in our comments. Seriously, "over time" its not about luck its about quality.
Now lets face the facts- we have a great manager (I hope he stays long term I really do) and we've got some great players, and we have a great system- BUT- we don't have "enough" Great players! Those are the facts.
Atkins knows it, Nicola knows it... we just need to get them in. To say that it wont build a team to "sign" a bunch of players is not really fair on the say "5" that we need.
We dont need a "QPR", but we do need about 4-5 players.

No offence taken. I was expecting us to win as games against teams like Wigan are matches we should be wining, especially at home. That's where the majority of our points will come from. Getting anything off the Mancs, Chelsea etc will be a bonus.

I still believe we'll be OK. I've said this season our aim should be to consolidate and build and improve with each season.

I'm confident we'll see some new signings before the window closes, but as I mentioned earlier, I don't want us to simply splash the cash and panic buy players ( a la QPR).

Adkins knows where he needs to strengthen and has identified his targets, and I'm sure he's identified 2 or maybe 3 players for those positions if we can't get our first target.

And surely signing a football player has a bit more to it then "Can we sign your player?" "How much are you offering for him?" "£6 million?" "He's worth £10 million" "How about £8 million?" "OK, sold"

Well, the first win has gone down the tubes so I will have to wait 3 or 4 weeks to get a line on what we might achieve.

For sure, Saints will lose the next 2 games and then will be BOTTOM, just like the Daily Mail said.

I didn't expect to get anything at Man City, but thought we could beat Wigan. So much for that MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON silly slogan.

Best wishes to all my readers!!

Went to the game,on chances Saints should have murdered Wigan.
Reality check needed though if you don't take your chances at this level you get beaten.
We had a football lesson second half they toyed with us at times.
Saints laboured the whole half.
What has happened to our pinged passes that we were able to do last season?
We have to replace Danny Fox, his defensive display again was poor.
His advantages in set plays and attacking are outwayed by his poor defending.
As was Fonte's, albeit possibly fouled for their second goal.
Jay Rod huffed and puffed but looked like a little boy lost at times.

Any way next week will be the true test to see that Saints can learn from this lesson today, I am sure they will.
We need to retain the ball better and move it quicker.
Dissapointed today, but optomistic we can turn it around.

So we've lost two games, one was against City. We were very poor today but there's only room for improvement i guess. Anyway, there's still under a week of the transfer window left and I'm sure NC and NA will take note of this defeat and realise we need to sort the defence out and also need a bit of creativity on the wings. You skate fans can say what you want. I just scroll past your jealous and arrogant comments. Nothing worth reading. It's actually really sad. First half, I couldn't see our losing this game.

After the first ten minutes of the second half we were definitely not going to win it.

I'm ambivalent towards Guly but I thought he did just fine today, enough that I had words with the guy behind me who was on his back for not getting to a pass from Lambert that was far out of Guly's reach.

I thought Lallana was seriously under the weather today and I think that he's such a cornerstone of the team that if he's underperforming then the team gets their head down a little.

I suspect NA has a CB in his list for the last week of the window - most deals get done now, so it's not unexpected still to be waiting.

The general tone on here is pitiful. We've lost one game that we might have hoped to win and you're all giving up hope...

finally a well balanced report.
i am getting fed up with all the moaners and whingers that post inane comments on here.
for 1 i was there and i thought that guly did ok today, wasnt our best player that imho would be clyne, but he wasnt our worst player either. you can hear a sigh and moan when he gets the ball, so he must hear this aswell and must be off putting.
2. i dont think that fonte did much wrong either.
a few people moan about these players and then others feel the need to jump on the band wagon.
we were unlucky today and had some good efforts. we hit the crossbar twice, 1 from a good save. their keeper made some good saves aswell.
the 1 problem i saw was that we were not getting the ball into ricky quickly enough, and you could see him getting frustrated. he was calling and calling for crosses to be made yet the ball keep being passed short through midfield.
comming home and listening to solent i have to wonder if half the texts sent in were from our fishy fiddling friends, some calling for adkins to be sacked! 1 even said that redkrap should be brought in! the obvious moans at gulyand fonte and even jos, 1 person stated that j-rod should be dropped and sold as hes not up to it. oh and lots of `thats it we are going down, we are going to be a yo yo club`. i do love how people can say this after 2 yes only 2 games!
if we had been more clinical we might well have won today. oh and can we try and get behind the team instead of just moaning all the time.

Can you answer my question, please?

When was the last time that many people went to watch Pompey at home?

Are you on Prozac???
It was dreadful. If they are seasoned Premiership veterans, as you state, please bear in mind that based on last season's outcome, there are 16 other better premiership teams than them in this league.
I admire your optimism, but we have to seriously bolster this squad and complete signings.
Wow, I don't know about that, 'loving feeling'. I have sure lost that winning feeling..
No offence, KLS. Just really peeved.

To argue the toss and with reference to the latter half of your argument; Adkins and the team know where they need to strengthen the squad. However, gaining the efforts of flair players, for eg Michu was lost due to Laudrop knowing him from his time in Spain.
Have you noticed since Pardew left that we have only signed ex Scunthorpe or players from around that vicinity (Tad Lee isn't from t'up North granted) .
Please, please, please prove me wrong but we have to be bold; and to be honest, if I was an 21 yo Uruguayan international watching that today,I would pledge my allegiance elsewhere.
I love the Saints, but when the passing training ground, 'ole' went up from the Wigan supporters today I felt................

a quick note to any fishy fiddlers on here trying to gloat at our defeat today at a stadium that holds 32000+ fans and so was only 3000 below full, oh how you would love to have just 3000 under capacity at the cowshed. remind me did you fill notarf krap when you played bournemouth, the second biggest club on the south coast. nope thought not.
anyway i digress when you come on here to make your well thought out posts please please remember that our manager is called ADKINS not ATKINS! and also we, thats SAINTS are in the premier league, we have great players and money to spend, money that is our not begged stole and borrowed off of local businesses and charities. good luck with balram chainrai! i hope he does to your despicable club what needs to be done and closes it down. every time your team of whos who of whos no one plays a game it is a shame on english football. stop crying about how you dont have enough players and play your youth! you got rid of every player you had cause you couldnt afford them! tough luck not our fault or anybody elses either! now go back to bed with your sisterauntmum its way past your bedtime.

Saints Alive: "Have you noticed since Pardew left that we have only signed ex Scunthorpe or players from around that vicinity"

Thought you might like to know that Southampton is closer to Watford than Burnley (Jay Rod) is to Scunthorpe.

Nathan Clyne came from London, which is daaahn sarf and Steve Davis came from Glasgow. Gazzaniga came from Gillingham.

You're talking tripe of the highest order, old son.

It does seem to me odd to me that the blue few seem to think you calculate the size of the crowd, by counting the number of empthy seats, not the ones with bums on them.

Not a fair question. Compare the capacity of St Marys with the capacity of Fratton Park.

It would have been the same if someone from Pompey had asked the same question when Saints were at The Dell.

I do know that, before it 'all seater stadiums' was introduced, Fratton Park once had more than 52,000 at a match. Unlikely to be beaten by either club.

No one is really doubting what happened in the past, sadly you have fallen on hard times, I hope in time that the whole sorry mess is sorted so that we can get back to the old gladiatorial scraps of old, and give us chance to gain revenge on a level playing field. I cannot see that happening in the near future, and probably not in my lifetime mores the pity.

The Dell had 31,044 for the Manchester United game 8/10/69, they reckon the crowd for Mike Channons Testimonial was 29,508 but there could have been up to another 5,000 non paying fans in the ground! Halcyon Days, never to happen again.

A few threads ago I reckoned we needed 42 points for safety and about 10 wins and 12 draws.

Sorry just seen what you have said on other post's, goodbye and good riddance to you "SCUNTS" hope you are out of the football league very very soon, so off you pop, get back to what you are good at, dreaming that you lived 15 miles west

the 1st club to suffer successive relegation's and to disappear from the football league altogether. where they will end up is anyone's guess.
now that would be an achievement.

bluewhiteandred is a bit if a schizo when it comes to Saints, I am sure it is all bluff and he is just having a tease at our expense, plenty of our numpties doing the same on the News site. I like banter, I don't like some of the sheer nastiness that goes on, it's pointless, and I absolutely abhor personation.

Just seen a friend off after a dinner party. He spent the best part of Monday trying to book three seats for today's game but couldn't get three seats together in any section, so he ended up not going.

Looking round the ground today there were any number of sets of three seats. The first section in the Itchen was about 1/3 empty.

Looks like the management team may have to have words with the new ticketing company and find out what the hell is going on.

Couldn't agree more.
When I bought our season tickets, all of block 3 was sold out, yet today there were rows of empty seats unoccupied,
including my row.
I hope this doesn't mean I will have the pleasure of some winging plastics who hardly ever turns up, sitting next to me.
I also tried getting extra tickets for my Bro, (Manure fan, but never seen them play, except on TV, like most Utd fans) As the Wigan game was linked with Manure, I had no joy either

No one player was bad. It's all to do with possesion. We gave up the ball too easily. Look at Spain in the Euro's, boring but effective. We have guys that can score, we have guys that can cover in defense but we need to keep the ball and stay in control.
I think we will need to get through these first difficult 4-5 games and then should settle down. We will have learnt a lot. We are in a tough position but Nigel will adjust, I'm convinced.
Keep the faith.
