Adkins: We have to be ruthless
5:49pm Saturday 25th August 2012 in Saints News
Nigel Adkins insists his players have to be more ruthless, after watching Saints lose 2-0 at home to Wigan.
Premier League football returned to St Mary’s this afternoon following a seven-year absence, but the day ended in disappointment thanks to goals from Franco Di Santo and Arouna Kone.
Adkins, whose side have now lost their opening two fixtures, admitted there are lessons that must be learned.
“It’s a relentless division,” he conceded. “We had opportunities to score and we haven’t taken them.
“You’ve got to be ruthless when you get them, and the goalkeeper’s obviously made some good saves.
“But the harsh reality is you’re going to get punished in this division. Wigan have gone and scored two good goals. Kelv’s probably not had anything else to do for the rest of the game.
“But that’s the division that we are in.”
The Saints boss added: “I think when you look at it we’ve come out with a gameplan, a formation to go and be assertive. We’ve gone and done that against a good footballing side, but the goals change games a little bit.”

Chelsea haven't speculated. They have invested.

Adkins is a premiership manager because he manages a team in the Premier League.
There are no Championship teams in the Premier League, because a Championship team has, by definition, got to be in the Championship.

Its all about opinions-mostly worthless, but heres my 2 pence worth, I think at home we are good enough to be a bit gun ho and go with 4-4-2, we have the option of lambo with J rod or sharpy who was on fire in pre season.
But were badly missing a wild card, adam was fantastic and so was davis, but not sure if others are on the same level. Ok Yawn - ramirez fits the bill, tricky, clever and can unlock a padlock on a dark night-go get him.
Clyne looks like a very good player, but needs a pacy winger in front of him
on the same wavelength.
Oh and the subs were too late for me we were chasing the game after 60 minutes.
It cant all be hearts and flowers.
Cant see us treading water until the transfer window shuts, just need to add that bit of unpredictable flair.

I don't believe it was a lack of attack that lost us this game. We hit the bar twice and had at least three other good shots saved by their keeper.
Yes we can always try to create more chances and turn them, hopefully, into goals.
But we lost this game in defence. We have to learn, and quickly, that in this division mistakes in defence are going to be punished. We saw it last week with Fox for City's 3rd goal and we saw it today with Fonte for the 2nd goal and possibly the 1st too. And if the likes of Wigan can do it against us (no disrespect to them intended), all teams that will be in the top half of the league come the end of the season will also do it to us (plus other teams fighting to stay away from the relegation zone).
We were certainly the better team in the 1st half and up until the first goal went in. Then we went flat and allowed Wigan to dictate the pace and control possession of the ball.
And my opinion about Guly, he put a good shift of hard work in today up until the last 15/20 minutes (as he did against City imo). But then he reverted to the Guly that frustrates us all. But he was no worse than the rest of the team in the fourth quarter of the match. Wigan also worked out how to control and contain Lambert midway through the 2nd half.
Clyne looks a very good buy and (midfielder) Davies looks a useful acquisition. But Rodriquez wasn't really in the game today, possibly because he was played out wide.

Today we were shown that in this league you need a strong backbone in your side with pace to counter attack. We have not got this at the moment. Jose Fonte has been good for our club but, i m o he is not up to the level of skill needed.
We need pace so that we have the option to go forward much much quicker than we did today. Today we were a Championship side playing against a Premiership side. In the first half Wigan sat back and sused us out. They let us play our football acoss the back four and keep the ball. They had a point and we were not putting them under the cosh. Their manager never left the touch line and was directing play from there. Second half they went up one gear and the game was over. J R on the wing is not in the game for long periods and i think is wasted. Fox another player like Jose, out of his depth in this league. I like the boy Davis in midfield and was surprised when taken of instead of Gully. Gully has obvious skills but not a brain to be quick enough to put them to good use. Spiderman and Lallana with Davis will get better as the season unfolds. The young ward-Prowse is good cover for any of the three i have mentioned,
We will get better and start to win games against sides like Wigan only if we strenghten and learn from the mistakes we made today. These are only my thoughts and i will still be 110% behind the team whoever plays.

I think that they stuck with gameplan to try and be patient and retain possession even when 1-0 down against a side that was happy to give saints possession as long as it was in our own half.
The last 30 minutes where agony to watch. Fox recievig the ball on the left, turning back and making the easy pass and starting again.
We need to mix it up and play more direct at times especially against a well drilled Premiership team that are happy to nick a 1-0 win

NA said that Guly worked hard Pre season so he's earnt his first team place but he's not good enough for prem. It sometimes seems as NA doesn't know where to put him. Spent alot of last season on right, and whenever he swapped him for De Ridder, the game changed.
Sharp doesn't have the pace, but will score goals.

Dear me, what a lot of fuss over nothing. This will turn out to be a 'good thing' - a result like this gives us a kck up the *rse and will only serve to guard against complacency and naivity in future lower table battles. If we had won today we would all have been saying how amazing we were only to go and do the same thing further down the line. It's happened and we need to learn from it, which is what Adking will do. We do need to strengthen as people say; CB/LB/ also some pace needed. It's a shame that the early fixtures almost certainly mean we'll be playing catch up for a while but that's the hand we're dealt. Two promotion in two seasons makes Adkins an amazing manager of a well run club. Don't panic, at least w're not languishing in league 1 with no money and no players. UTS.
Man City delivered one when they came from behind, and now Wigan, a town more noted for Rugby, delivered another kick today.
That's one kick delivered away from home and the second on home turf. How long before the kicks are delivered instead of being received?

My take on the game - good first half but didn't take chances and their keeper made three excellent saves. Wigan punished our mistakes because they are PL quality and last season we got away with it in the Championship. Wigan kept the ball well and played as a unit to their strengths, and deserved their win. Our defence will be exposed again and again until better players come in, with pace. Most disappointing today was the lack of support after Wigan scored, and the mass exodus after Wigan's second. Suspect it might have been first time at SMS for some of them. Some of the moaning comments and texts to Radio Solent are unbelievable.

Dear me, what a lot of fuss over nothing. UTS.

With the new OS being very difficult to navigate and little if any information on the number of tickets sold it is very off putting for last minute people to come along on the day. With 2,000 absent Wigan fans I am sure these seats could have been sold if they had been made available and advertised. The cameras are behind the crowd in the Kingsland which was nearly full but not obvious from the camera angles. You could hear a pin drop when Wigan scored their first, Saints fans in shock and Wigan fans who couldn't believe their luck, good goal though.

1. st marys holds 32689. todays attendance 29604, so can you do the maths on you fins sorry fingers, no here you are then empty seats is 3085. now wigan did not sell out so take say 1500 off of that leaves around 1500 empty saints seats.
2. so if there were around 1500 wigan fans today out of 29604 that would give a attendance by saints fans of around 28000.
28000 saints fans today thats probabley double the amount of fans at your local, pack the park, derby last week!
3. 3085 empty seats is less than 10% of capacity. half of that saints so around 4% of our allocation empty.
does that clear it up for you? i know its hard for a skate to comprehend such a large attendance but i cant help that! you might also find that some of the empty seats were brought by man utd fans as if you want tickets to see the utd game you needed to by for todays game, so utd fans would buy both and not go today! now please if you have any more questions regarding attendances and which team cant sell all its tickets for their biggest game in years, then dont bother as i cant be bothered to teach you basic maths again. and change your user name it dosent bother anyone and is not funny.

Whilst we can make individual criticisms, we just looked very lack lustre as a collective. We lacked real pace and creativity and never applied sustained pressure. Wigan just soaked us up and then taught us a lesson of how to hold and pass the ball in the second half.
RL was disappointing but I guess so were most of them save for AL. Why NA persists with Guly is a mystery.
I didnt think we needed to strengthen up front but based on yesterdays performance and based on the fact we had no impact players off the bench we certainly do. That was the alarming thing yesterday, I never had the confidence that someone could come off the bench and do a job for us. We need something like this:-
Forward - Jordan Rhodes, Gary Hooper or possibly Michael Owen.
Midfield - We need creativity. Ramirez is a must, if not Phillips or Ince.
Defence - Olsson for LB and 1/2 centre halfs. Michael Dawson would be awesome.
However, I worry about our ability in the transfer market. So many slip through the net. What was the name of that Tunisian centre half who was signing last year but was vocal in saying that he would never sign because of how NC was doing business?? So, overall, plenty to worry about.
We need a minimum of four. Now go and get them, otherwise Redknapp could be back quicker than we thought!!!!!(Joke).

Giving the ball away cheaply again as per Reading was always going to be punished...and we still cannot head the ball in defence...

But a win yesterday could have induced a little overconfidence. All this will have sharpened the quest for new signings this week and maybe loosened the cheque book - signings we needed regardless of yesterday's result.
It could well be a blessing in disguise.
In any case it's far too early for gloom - like calling a bad year on January 7th.
Full marks to the many who stayed and cheered the team at the end. Negativity makes some feel better, but overall it's a destructive trait.

Fox for me is a good player, but defensively needs to step up his game. He always givers too much space to the winger and this is why he seems slow.
For me the main problem is that NA is using the players in the wrong position for the formation he used. Lallana is a winger, he's not the playmaker; Guly is a playmaker, not a winger/striker, play him behind Lambert and we'll see how well he can play (but yes, he needs to show more interest during all his time on the pitch. If he is not doing that, plat Puncheon there.)
Jay-R needs time to learn to play as a winger if he's going to play there. But Steeeeve needs to be involved more in the team. Agree that if NA think he's not good enough to be on the bench, sell him!
Yesterday, after they changed to 4-4-2, young James Ward-Prowse played on the RM, almost as a winger. Why didn't Puncheon come on for that?
Never mind, two easy matches now with two wins and and we're back on track...............

Looks like the management team may have to have words with the new ticketing company and find out what the hell is going on.
29000 divided by 3 means 9666. They must have been on the roof then?

Trying to make a positive point here, which is that the ticketing system was saying there wasn't speace when there clearly was.
If you want to fly off the handle and call me names, that's very clever, but it doesn't alter the fact that something's wrong when someone who wants to sit with his kids is incorrectly told there's no room, so three seats remain empty when there should have been a full house.
You really do need to work on your bitterness.

Think some people should take a reality check - we are very new to this Premiership lark! As fans we should accept we will not win games every so often. We did the same last season - we will this! What happened to getting behind the team?
I honestly believe although working hard behind the scenes - we will not have any new signings to cheer by Friday 11pm. Ramirez was a pipe dream (although someone has rumoured 15-million Euros has been transferred to a bank in Balogna!). The Japanese defender - Phillips are all going to have to wait - probably until January.
Let's face it we have to step up a level as individuals and a team. It may be a step too far for many - and as fans we need to do the same!
Unfortunately I won't be attending as regularly this season - the cost of The premiership is a step too far for me. I have other priorities.
I would rather have Adkins in charge for the next 10-years and be a yo-yo club than have the constant change striving to stay a Premiership side.
Good luck Nigel and the team - let's give United a taste of Southampton at it's best next Sunday.
Of all the clubs I want to beat this season - United still is the one team. Ever since that muppet Kean jestured at the game that sent us down 7-years ago...Come on lads you can do it!

It's a point that has been made before on this site that this who actually play footie get Guly. How anyone can single out Guly today for criticism is beyond me.
Seems obvious to me that NA hasn't a clue if or who we'd be signing and that is the same reason he plays Guly, NC pulls all the strings and Guly was a NC deal.
I think NC believes too much the Don Cortese persona and tries to run rough shod over other chairmen, remember this is the guy who asked NA to quit Scunthorpe so we wouldn't have to pay compensation.

We are entering the final/panic buy week and still short of quality. If I were dealing with saints I would put price up and so would the don!
More importantly we have players that will not get a game still on the books.
Dealings should have been done way before now so the squad and new members had time to gel and we wouldn't risk being held to ransom over players. And more importantly not lose must win games.

ive had enough of the moaners on here, we lost 2 games sack the manager sell all the squad panic buy in every position! we need to spend spend spend! give it a rest. i am so glad that we have nc and na in charge and not the lot on here (and i include myself in that) i have views on the squad and team but dont for 1 minute think its better than anybody else`s let alone nc and na.
and as for Kean, a player who deliberately set out to injure another player, also left his international teamates in the lurch by leaving just before a world cup because he didnt like the training facilities, and then he did that wave to the saints fans, i feel he should have been banned for life after admitting to setting out to injure another player (yes from management too). this is a man who bares a grudge for a long time. now itv see fit to employ him as a pundit! after seeing all he did above and more i cant belive he can sit in a room and criticise others in the game. so lets go stuff manure on sunday then we have Arsenal and a manager who loves our academy. 6 easy pts then

have you ever tried speaking to a real person at the TO it is a near impossible task.
NC has got to look at the way we are selling tickets because at the moment it is more touble then it is worth and this is sure to alienate the occasional supporter.
even when using the online booking system to actually find a seat you have to individualy view each block to find a spare seat. according to this EVERY seat is sold for manure next week. Even when i went to by my ST it said that the whole of block 3 was sold this is obviously not the case. when away tickets go on sale online the system crashes or it lets you buy more tickets then you are entitled to.there were tales of people by 6 or 7 tckets for the arsenal game that had not been to citeh.....this will cause problems later with distribution of the remaining tickets. when you try to ring the complaints department all you get is a recorded message saying that all operators are busy please call back later..............n
ot even a queuing system and even on constant redial it may take upto an hour to get through. Even last week at citeh according to one of the local plod because of an error at the Saints TO not all the tickets were sold or even made available to Saints fans The point i am trying to make is that Saints do not make it easy to purchase match tickets and only hav e themselves to blame for poor attendances either home or away.........RANT OVER!!!!

Am a bit disappointed weve not bought anyone with premier league experience apart from Davis and I thought at the time of Rodrigues arrival "where was he going to play him" To me we have too many faces for the same shirt" but what do I know. NA is a diamond and performed wonders for the club as has NC although if im honest I dont like his style of management. Maybe he ruffles a few feathers but I warrant he will not settle for 17th. NA will need to produce or he'll be gone i reckon. I also reckon he will produce, the man has a terrific record is well respected by all who work with him. Give him and the team a chance. They'll be ok, we all have our opinions on who should play and how we should play but he's the man in the hot seat, trust him, he's done nothing wrong since he came here, he's learning, as is the team. We'll be ok, one or two signings maybe, maybe even back to 442 who knows but keep the faith, we'll be alright, I've got a small wager on a top ten finish and I'd rather start poor and finish well. Give the players a chance and the manager. They will come good and we will be among em. COYr

listening on telly the second goal was taken off of Fox & Kone scored well that's one defender who should go. why after last week are we chasing attackers?
I know the best form of defence is attack but last week we had all eleven men in defence which usually means the attack doesn't have faith in the defence so please tell me I'm wrong if you were there but we need a better defence don't we?

you can see it Adkins must see it but will he change it?
I played for Northwick in defence but I openly admit I love Rugby playing & watching but I like to see how Saints are doing.
Last season I said Saints need to strengthen the defence they haven't.
I was willing to give the goalie a go but after Man City I feel he could/should go.
Fox isn't premiership class & must go.
at Man.C we had 11men in defence why? no faith in the defence by the attack?
I could quite easily sit back & watch Saints go back down & get more youth into Rugby but I want to see this city do well at all sports but come on fans let's be honest about it

So here’s what I saw, I thought we looked in charge in the first half but you have to take your chances. The crossings into their box looked mustard, but we didn’t get on the end of it.
Lallana is our general, what a refreshing touch of local class.
Second half, Wigan showed us what the Prem is all about. We seemed to be just chasing shadows. I’m sure most of us expected a win, but there you have it, every game will be a scrap.
We will be fine, as there are many points still to win and we will continue on our destiny of greatness.
Ps. How did the skunts get on?

In any case it's far too early for gloom - like calling a bad year on January 7th.
Full marks to the many who stayed and cheered the team at the end. Negativity makes some feel better, but overall it's a destructive trait.

Anyway back to the Premier League Forum.
Yesterday was a disappointment there's no denying but as other more clued up supporters have already stated, we are only two games into the season and we all knew this League was not going to be easy.
Silly mistakes by certain players have undoubtedly cost us in both games and need addressing sooner rather than later.
I agree with several posters that experienced "help" is required at centre back, left back and possibly in the creative area of midfield/winger.
If the Ramirez transfer is now a dead duck which I feel probably is and was a tad over ambitious in the first place, I'd prefer Saints to look a bit closer to home and see if they could do a double swoop for Ince and Phillips from Blackpool.
The Japanese centre half could be a bit of a gamble in this league so I'd prefer someone with PL experience.
I'm sure NA and the team will add a couple of new faces before Manure come to St Marys and the place will be a full house and rocking.
We normally play well against Manure and they aren't exactly firing on all cylinders and have a few injury problems.
A point against them would be decent return but I feel this could be the best time to play them and get a result that will ignite our season.
Here's hoping for a busy week of signings and a cracking game next week

Seems obvious to me that NA hasn't a clue if or who we'd be signing and that is the same reason he plays Guly, NC pulls all the strings and Guly was a NC deal.
I think NC believes too much the Don Cortese persona and tries to run rough shod over other chairmen, remember this is the guy who asked NA to quit Scunthorpe so we wouldn't have to pay compensation.

St.Yorkie wrote:I think what gets some fans goat' is that its blatantly obvious we need signings and they're not being made.
I streamed it in Yorkshire and I thought we were a bit unlucky - but as I predicted pre-season if we don't convert our chances, we are prone at the back and Premiership strikers won't miss!

You truly are one of the most offensive foul mouthed people I have ever had the misfortune to have dealings with.
You have no respect for anybody or anything ( except it seems , your football team ), how pitiful can you get.
Virtually everybody on this site except for the likes of you, has a respect for the views of other people, even when those views are not to their liking. They certainly don't have to resort to bad language and personal insults to put across their point of view.
For heavens sake get off this forum ( a forum for football thugs, might be more to your liking ).
If I was from Southampton I would be ashamed that you come onto this forum and attack everybody including the very people who live in Southampton. You also appear to have nothing positive at all to say about Southampton, if it is that bad then Southampton would be better off if you went somewhere else ( only please don't come to Liverpool, because you won't be welcome ).
Nobody from up North has ever made nasty comments that are in anyway as bad as those made by andysaints007

I take it cortese is, but who is advising cortese of what price to go to? It should be Adkins as his ar5e is on the line.
I appreciate that transfers are complicated But they are an important part of the job. I don't think it's good from a footballing or business sense to leave it so late, same as when you go to the sales in town, get in early and grab a bargain! We are now in panic buy country, clubs know of our desperation and will add a couple of noughts on the end of any deals. Every man and his dog were shouting 'defender, fail to plan, plan to fail.
Also have to say our clip on motd made our ground look empty,I was there and I know it wasn't but seats must be sold. I've been saying this for months now that we must make sure every seat has an ar5e on it. Sales team or ticket pricing needs time spent on it.

So: "With such a bright future, the Southampton fans' faces all have smiles on them." (well, most of them!)
But: "He travelled the length of the country and saw his team lose 4-2, so the skunt's face looked as long as the M6 on a wet saturday evening."
Eeeeezzzzy!

Most disapointing thing yesterday was the the epty seats. Everyone at the club has done a remarkable job and invested so much to get us back and look how are they rewarded. It really is pathetic and there are no excuses. They'llall be there next game though! If you watched matches on TV you wil not have seen so any vacant seats at anywhere else. Embarassing and shamefull.
Also I have never seen so many people leave games early as they do at our place. No matter whether we are winning, loosing or even drawing as soon as that clock hits 80 off they go. Idiots!! There is no need to. If you stayed you would see ther is no real difficulty getting away. I have never left before the end and nor will I. Do you leave the cinema 10 mins before the end!
Some of you so called fans do not deserve this club and they don't deserve you!

Shame to hear the Northam singing that tired old Pompey anthem within 5 mins of the start! Change the record lads, try supporting the Saints throughout the game instead of singing about a League 1 side!!!!
No denying portsmuff do volume better than us...but would you live there?

Squad of League 1 and Championship signings, not up to PL standard.
Spending 7 mill on your most expensive player is nothing at this level.
I hope they don't, but Saints look like they are going to struggle.
WE'VE GOTTA GET BETTER AND NOW !!!
Every effort must be made. treat each game as a must win Cup Final and get the goals hitting the back of the net. We have talented players who can score goals.
Yesterday was not good enough - but next week it must be
BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS.
The Players must give everything on the pitch - for themselves and the supporters,
Red Army is linked to the success of the Club.
WE MUST DO EVERYTHING TO WIN OUR NEXT GAME.

How come there are suddenly so many new names on here posting negative shitte? Ok, some are your skunts obviously, but the others? Where were you in Div1 and the Championship? Bloody JCLs.
And for god sake can we please get the mans name right - Adkins with a D.
For whats it worth my opinion is Adkins is doing a great job BUT we can not and must not let the strange decisions go unnoticed and unmentioned. For example why play Guly and Jay out of position. Why only make a substitution yesterday with only 20 mins to go when the 28k Saints fans could see changes were required earlier. And the biggy lack of action in key areas in transfer market. Yes I fully understand it's not the same as signing players on computer games but Adkins does seem to be revelling in the fact he's left it late this season. This does not mean all his good points suddenly vanish but we can't all be as positive as you are Seedhouse but in my opinion just because someones opinion doesn't match yours doesn't make the view unimportant. And they may well have been supporting the club in League 1 etc just not posted here
I am a regular viewer but an occasional poster (although I used to post uner the psydonym of Saint Ted until I moved).
I never say my views are correct, but they are my views, and I'm also open minded enough to read other fans opinions (is it opinions or opinion's) and tend to agree with them (unless they're from a skunt!!!!)
Thank you for your time

Most of the teachers at the comp I went to probably couldn't spell 'Dunlop', even the ones who liked to thrash the odd pupil or two. There was even one who threw a desk half way across the room at a naughty pupil, so that poor lad has probably still got splinters in his harris.
