Transfers show Saints mean business, says Kelvin Davis

Kelvin Davis Kelvin Davis

KELVIN Davis insists Saints’ raid for Bologna star Gaston Ramirez shows the club mean business this season.

Manager Nigel Adkins has so far added Steve Davis, Nathaniel Clyne , Paulo Gazzaniga, Jay Rodriguez and Emmanuel Mayuka to his squad.

But he hopes to bring in more players by the time the transfer window shuts at 11pm tomorrow night.

One potential signing is Bologna forward Ramirez after a protracted transfer saga.

If he signed for Saints – for a club record fee of around £11m – it would demonstrate the club are going places, according to Davis.

“Apparently Ramirez is on his way,” the keeper, pictured, said.

“I think it is (a statement of intent).

“We have done some shrewd business so far and it would be nice to add one or two more that can help us and have that little bit of magic that you need to win games.”

Adkins remained coy when asked about Ramirez, but did confirm that he will be adding new recruits to his squad before the window slams shut tomorrow.

“We will be bringing players in,” Adkins said.

“We will be working hard behind the scenes.“The chairman has been great, he has backed us. We achieved back to back promotions and now we want to push on.

“It’s fair to say that we are going to bring in new players who will push us to that next level where we need to be.”

Adkins made 11 changes to his starting XI as Saints defeated Stevenage 4-1 in the Capital One Cup in midweek.

Davis, who was given the chance to rest on the bench, thinks the performance against the League 1 club highlighted just how much strength in depth the club have.

“The manager has always rotated the squad in this competition and has looked to freshen it up and get some experience for lads if they need it,” the 35-year-old said.

“It was great to see Ben Reeves coming on and scoring a fantastic goal.

“It was good to see players who haven’t had an opportunity so far this season to stick it in there and show the manager and the club what they can do.

“Tadanari (Lee) scored, and Billy Sharp did too so that will remind everyone that we have goal scorers at the club and that is great to see.”

Southampton have shipped five goals in their first two Premier League games. And boss Adkins believes the Aussie international, 24, can add class to his backline.

Remind me again of your crowd for the "prestigious" friendly against Udinese? How many did you take to Stevenage in midweek? The crowd for that game was barely 3000, the lowest of all the League Cup games that night, and a major factor in that was the total lack of away support. Stevenage themselves are on record as being disappointed at the lack of gate revenue from "Premier League" fans. In the previous round Pompey took several hundred to Plymouth for a game we had no hope whatever of winning. THAT is real support. Still, all your plastic fairweathers will be back for the ManUre game. Anybody fancy a sweepstake on the size of the crowd remaining after 80 minutes?

Absolutely, I never would have thought we would be spending this kind of money. I know people will quote Premier Revenue etc etc, but we are spending on some good quality here, unlike some other teams in the league seem to be buying the usual candidates.
I am really pleased with what we have done so far in our transfer dealings and if we do secure the signing of Ramirez and a defender then this would be a really good transfer window for us. Great backing from the chairman for Nigel Adkins, shows he has faith in his man... Great to see.

53,000 record attendance at the new Wembley by one club.....Southampton FC...What a day that was.
I wish a few of those had gone to stevenage to boost the travelling red army.
I didn't go to Stevenage myself. Unfortunately when you work for a living it is not always possible to do all these midweek away games. I try to when possible but we all have to work.

Also, I need to be selective with the away games this year as the cost of an ST and general expense of going to football is a significant financial commitment, especially when you also have young children! So certain games, especially midweek cup games, will have to be sacrificed.

I suppose that makes me a plastic supporter does it?!!

Not at all, pretty much in line to my post above.
I'm in the same boat and have 3 season tickets but also have priorities such as my own company to run and being half way through a house extension
I'll do as many of the special away days (if able to get a ticket!!) for weekends away ie Norwich, Newcastle, Sunderland, Liverpool, Everton etc and Reading and whatever London clubs I can get a ticket for but won't be going to every game away.
Looking forward to as many as I can get to

Absolutely 100% agreed. We can't do everything unfortunately.

I am sure the Pompey supporters who post on here and criticize our away attendances go to every Portsmouth game because they are the bestest supporters in the world ever!

But unfortunately many of us fans do have other commitments like work etc.

Shouldn't the dates of the transfer windows be shifted to more sensible times. We are trying to concentrate on the small matter of Man Ure coming up this weekend, aren't we? Or is all the focus on comings and goings? I feel if the window closed at least a week BEFORE the season started, we wouldn't be talking about players settling in when important games have already been played.Saints will be half way through the season before being organised with a recognised starting line-up!! (This is probably far too much like common sense for the Football League and Association.)

didn't know pompey had that many fans, or was that the away fans your talking about.
STOP PRESS!!! In the previous round Pompey took several hundred to Plymouth. Thanks for that, I needed cheering up! You have a reputation for your fans bailing on the club in their darkest hour whereas we were still filling SMS in League One. We took about 6000 to Palace last year to give you just one example of the times we have totally filled an away end. You could learn a lot from our fans about away support. We've had massive away support for years. There are recent stats supporting this, have a little look thru the internet. Stevenage away on a midweek 2nd round cup game to watch our second 11. Seriously, being totally realistic, who would want to watch that? Not many.

For me our season rests on what players are brought in before the transfer deadline we need 2 central defenders fonts looks shaky a left back and a midfielder who can split defences open lallana has that quality but in Ramirez we would have more quality in the final third just the uncertainty of the move will it or won't it happen makes me think we are looking else where but in nige and Nicola I trust COYR
