New signing Emmanuel Mayuka will bring star quality to Southampton

Emmanuel Mayuka Emmanuel Mayuka

“I just wanted to finish what they failed to finished,” said an emotional Emmanuel Mayuka.

It is a mark of the young man that in his greatest moment of triumph and glory, the significance of what he and his teammates had achieved was not lost on him.

Zambia – nicknamed ‘The Copper Bullets’ – had just stunned the footballing world by beating the megastar Ivory Coast team to win the African Cup of Nations for the first time ever earlier this year.

They returned home to a hero’s welcome, jet fighters screaming overhead, army trucks waiting to transport the players to huge public events and thousands upon thousands of fans there to greet them.

Some had walked for as long as 15 hours to pay tribute to their idols.

But, in amongst all that joy, was an outpouring of emotion expressed by Mayuka.

It was back in 1993 that a Zambian military plane crashed into the ocean, killing 25 players and officials on board.

This achievement was for them, a tribute, as Mayuka put it, to something they were robbed of the chance of doing themselves.

Mayuka was the undisputed Zambian star of the tournament, taking the Golden Boot as joint top scorer with three goals and also netting in the nerve-wracking penalty shootout that settled the final.

Manchester City defender Kolo Toure and Arsenal forward Gervinho both missed their penalties for Ivory Coast.

Mayuka started his footballing career by joining the Lusaka Academy in Zambia aged 11 before joining one of the country’s biggest club sides, Kabwe Warriors.

It didn’t take long for his goalscoring prowess to attract attention from elsewhere and he switched to Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2008.

After two seasons there he moved to Swiss side Young Boys, where he really made his name as a prolific, pacy striker.

In two campaigns in Switzerland he plundered 32 league and cup goals which brought him to the attention of numerous clubs around Europe, including Saints, who tied up a £3.5m deal to bring him to England.

Mayuka, pictured, shouldn’t be short of match fitness as he has already played seven Swiss League games in 2012/13, their season having started back in mid-July.

He netted twice in his first three games, but did not score in his last four prior to joining Saints.

Last season he netted eight league goals for Young Boys, who finished third in the Swiss League.

In 2010/11, he had Europa League experience, netting three goals for Young Boys.

Having travelled so much at just 21- years-old, moving to England holds no fears for Mayuka.

He has already said: “No matter where you move as a player, you always have to adapt to different cultures.

“It’s part and parcel of being a footballer.”

With a work permit secured and a five-year contract agreed, there is speculation he could even figure for Saints against Manchester United this Sunday.

Bringing in an African player with pace and passion can never be a bad thing.

Sounds like a nice guy too.

Sort of the opposite of Guly...

Guly, fox and fonte have all served the club well , wether they are premiership quality is subject to opinion but they give 100% which is all we as fans can ask for , good luck Emmanuel sure you will bring some much needed pace to the team and the proposed other transfers can only strengthen the squad

On his day he is one of the better players at this club. You are probably the same "fans" that used to criticise Le Tiss for "not tackling back".

Just follow the team and stop moaning, FFS!

Spot on.

These are quality players who have delivered what was expected and served this club well. If for any reason (and it is far too soon to say) they cant do it in the premiership then they will move on. Thats how it works.
No discredit to them just maximum respect for being part of the greatest recovery a south coast football team has seen in donkeys years.

It's part of being a football fan to banter and complain from time to time but when it becomes just a flock of sheep baaaaing because they have nothing original to say then its just mindless babble.

Anyway - I'm just beaming with these latest signings. Once the CB is signed you all need to take a moment and look at our squad... AWESOME .. in the true sense of the word. Soon we will recover from the cruelty of the early fixtures being against the top clubs and we will rise up the table like an Apollo rocket.

Before anyone jumps in I know we lost against Wigan..These things happen..... but its all a learning experience.

With this squad we are going to learn again what its like to support a top flight premiership team!!

Get behind these new faces, have belief, have faith. The club is delivering on its promises ... we all need to reciprocate !!!!

I think to add to the Guly point, perhaps those 'fans' should have some faith in NA. He picks the team and has led us back to the promised land after so much pain - if he feels Guly deserves to play then lets trust him hey?
I imagine if we let any of you lose on team selection we would not be once more a Premier League team so stick to your day jobs.

I like what I have just read and feel that this is the kind of player we want, I also feel that Ramirez could be the opposite, his refusal to play even though he is still under contract to another club worries me as he could be using us as a stepping stone and could do the same to Southampton

In a sense I agree. But we really don't know the complete circumstances behind Ramirez.

If we look at the events as they have unfolded (throughout the media) and take into consideration on how frustrated we have become over all of this as fans, imagine how the player must feel.

By all accounts a deal was struck between Southampton and Bologna (I assume this may be close to the truth as the club allowed the player to talk to Saints). Ramirez agrees a deal with Saints, with NA & NC selling the ambition of the club to the young lad he is now in a position where he has set his heart on coming to Saints... The lad can't wait to play for his new team and show what he can do, mentally he has left Bologna and is looking at the new chapter in his life.

Then, the president of Bologna suddenly announces that there are still points to be settled before the transfer goes through. It then appears he has moved the goal posts and shortly after it seems that the deal may be off (our Cortese is not to be messed with).

Now, put yourself in to the shoes of the player... He has been sold the idea and ambition of Saints, he then sets his heart on joining Saints because of the ambition of the club and to be able to play in the Premier League. Then, in a sudden twist you find out that the deal may not go through due to deal changes by the selling club. All that you thought was going to happen is now in danger of collapsing... You know Saints want you and you know they have told you that you will be a key part to their team. You are emotionally sold on the idea and now it seems that this will all be taken away from you... after all the talks and developments, the move collapses...

How do you react?

I am not saying this is right, but we need to often see various sides to a story, football is after all, a very emotional sport.

He may well use us as a stepping stone, but if he does well and we do sell him on in future then I am sure it will be for beneficial profit for Saints.

Lets hope whatever happens we are all together as one and start picking up points soon.

Good post.

A further point to add, I feel, is that we should keep in mind the psychology of the club president. After all, it is he that accused Ramirez of threatening not to train.

Gualdi (sp?) has already sold several of the team's most talented players (they aren't in the best place financially) and is unpopular with the fans. There have been protests outside the club over the Ramirez signing. The President stands to benefit from directing some of the angst towards 'traitor' Ramirez and away from himself.

What we have heard about this saga suggests to me that el presidente isn't entirely trustworthy, so I could believe this...

I have used Player for a number of years now. Initially it was fraught with technical issues which have improved quite considerably over the years. Load times are always a problem though with Player, as is logging in. To be honest I have not noticed any difference with the upgrade, which has left me wondering why the price increase.

On the other hand, I think the new official site layout is absolute shyte - it's all over the place, difficult to navigate, stats are not updated... not user friendly at all.
