Southampton complete the record signing of Bologna playmaker Gaston Ramirez
7:02pm Friday 31st August 2012 in Saints News
Gaston Ramirez
Saints have finally completed the club record signing of Bologna playmaker Gaston Ramirez.
The 21-year-old forward has agreed a four-year contract at St Mary’s, joining for a fee thought to be about £12m.
The deal for the Uruguay international smashes the previous record of £7m that Saints paid for Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez earlier this summer.
The transfer was a complicated and troublesome one that ended up going right down to the wire, with the club even requiring a successful work permit appeal.
Despite Ramirez having agreed to the terms offered to him by Saints two weeks ago, the club struggled to settle on an appropriate fee and payment structure with Bologna.
The matter was complicated further as Ramirez’s former club, Penarol, owned 30 per cent of his registration, meaning negotiations had to be conducted with them too.
The move turned into a protracted on-off saga, but all the differences were finally settled this week, with the formalities being wrapped up today.
Ramirez certainly represents one of the most exciting signings the club has made.
The 21-year-old arrives with a big reputation, which was enhanced as he starred for Uruguay in the Olympic Games this summer.
Ramirez started his career at Penarol, in Uruguay, but was snapped up by Bologna two years ago for €2.5m.
He went on to score 12 goals in 58 appearances for the Serie A side and won nine caps for Uruguay.

This evening the administrator and PKF partner issued a statement saying his firm will work with the two groups while they finalise their offers.
Mr Birch said: ‘We have held detailed discussions with both Portpin and the Pompey Supporters’ Trust over the past week.
‘As neither party is currently in a position to complete a deal we have been unable to make an informed decision as to which offer is in the best interests of creditors.
‘We have therefore decided to give both parties two weeks to finalise terms to acquire Portsmouth Football Club.
‘We will now work with Portpin and the Trust as they finalise their plans and seek to satisfy the Football League and the Professional Footballers’ Association of their respective abilities to sustain the club in the future.
‘We will also use this opportunity to request a review of the points deduction that is being held in abeyance on the club by the Football League.’

I'd also rather read posts from Southampton fans that are excited about the success that our new signings ,who by the way are all proven internationals, could bring to our club.
I say give them a chance and get behind the team which includes the great work being done behind the scenes by NC, NA and all the staff and scouts etc before you p1ss on everyones fire.
Who knows some of these players may go on to be world beaters and we may one day be competeing for major European trophies.

He obviously has 1 of 2 problems, either:
a) He doesn't understand a club actually having 70k to pay a player.
or
b) Is upset because 70k could save their club, buy fratton park and add a player or 2 from Eastleigh FC's squad.
Obviously doesn't realise that our wage structure was "limited" only by our financial limitations.
On 2nd thoughts, probably doesn't understand the phrase "financial limitations", either.

This signing not only raises our profile as a club but is a massive statement of intent.
Ooh Nigel Adkins you lucky man.
We now have pace, another midfield wizard, the other being lallana, and have gone some way to addressing the defensive problems.
All in all a very productive transfer window.

As a lifelong fan of Southampton, I too remember the signing of Keegan. I think that this indeed does at least match that. It proves the club means business. I wish Gaston all the luck in the world in the future years as a Saint.
However, this is no match for the Keegan signing.
Keegan was a European Cup winner, European player of the year (twice?),
and a household name.
I was at junior school when we signed Keegan and when it happened our headmaster at the time did a tour of the school announcing the signing to each and every class. I don't think a similar scenario would have occurred today if the signing had been made during term time.
We welcome Gaston to our great club and city, and truly hope that whilst he's with us he emulates Keegan by becoming the best player in Europe and assists us in winning the greatest club competition.
Happy days.
The future's bright.

I just do not get it South Americans do not have a good record in the UK and we desperately need defenders. maybe Marcus did leave us £40mil in his will but we seem to be wasting it sorry to be so negative... I thought 7 mil on second rate championship striker was weird but this takes the biscuit. I so hope I am wrong and we storm this league and make a Euro spot but its just not convincing me.
It is funny how all the pundits and people in the know are saying this is a massive coup for Southampton. When you look at all the deals going through in this window there are players who are far less talented being sold for similar money.
I have seen a few games with this lad and I never dreamed we would ever be signing him.
If I am wrong then I will hold my hands up, but I think we have made some real gem signings in this window.

1. Cody Cropper - free
2. Paulo Gazzaniga - £1m
3. Nat Clyne - £2m
4. Maya Yoshida £??m
5. Steve Davies - Nominal (£2m?)
6. Manu Mayuka £??m
7. Jay Rodriguez - £8m
8. Gaston Ramirez - £12m
Not sure what the REAL total is when you include all the signing on fees etc. and don't know what sort of dent it makes in wages, but THIS is a statement, not only in the quality (something we coudn't have dreampt of a couple of years ago) but more importantly in that it builds on what we have. It's not just throwing money at anyone who comes along a la QPR.
So, without wishing to be (too) smug, where are all the moaners who doubted NA could attract top players? Where are all the moaners who said we needed to invest? Where are all the moaners who have been saying throughout this transfer window that not enough was happening?
AND the No. 3 shirt is still up for grabs.
AND we have a crop of promising youngsters, some who might just force their way into contention in the coming months and years.
AND we put out a near-reserve team on Tuesay and spanked a decent lower league side.
The times they are a changing!
Still no No. 3

Falque, well I don't think he ever arrived with any kind of expectation.
I think with all the players we have signed, due to the amount of TV coverage we can all enjoy in these times I think we all have quite a good understanding of the players we have signed, especially in no small part to some of the Olympic football.
But generally when you look at what we have signed, the players are on a different level to Delgado and Falque.

I hadn't done this before with him because most of the previous players i.e. Buttner & Lens have not come to fruition, and his signing was like an eternity.
It seems that at long last we have a player that can score goals from outside of the penalty area.
I would like to congratulate our management team on all of the time and effort they must have put into the signing of these players.

I totally agree about Lawrenson. Total 4rse, who has never had anything but bile for Saints.
I always thought Delgado was a tad unlucky. He arrived injured, got fit and looked the part. (Remember the win against Arsenal or the goal at Anfield?) But Strachan became manager and seemed to take an instant dislike to him; presumably because he wasn't his signing. So, in short, we never got the best out of him. Pity!
Finally, those knocking Hammond, get real. He was never good enough for the Prem (possibly not even the Championship) but he always gave his best and, lest we forget, was our captain during a remarkable period. Peter Rodregues and Bobby Stokes weren't the greatest players ever to wear the shirt but, rightly, we'll always adore them.

Ramirez flies in...
The star of the Uruguayan olympic team, Ramirez really is a coup for Saints, and as Nigel Adkins so succinctly put it "What we have got is one of the most exciting prospects in world football coming to St Mary’s."
One of the best sources for info on the protracted deal was Italian journalist Daniele Labanti of the Corriere di Bologna, the Corriere della Sera local issue. I was delighted when he agreed to answer some questions on Ramirez.
After a long drawn out transfer, Saints fans will be hoping Ramirez is worth the wait. What did you make of the transfer?
DL:- "It was a very difficult deal because too many parts were involved. Saints, Bologna, Penarol and agents all tried to get the best from the deal. Bologna needed the money and when the club understood Ramirez wanted to go, the Italian club decided to sell him. The first trouble was a interview Ramirez did with Gazzetta dello Sport, talking as a ‘Saint’, just after the agreement with Southampton: Bologna were still in talks with the Saints and the Chairman was very upset with that interview. But then all details were managed and the deal was completed."
Many Saints fans will have only seen him at the Olympics, what are his strengths and weaknesses?
DL:- "Ramirez is a great young player. As a comparison, he had more impact in Italy than Pastore had in Palermo before they sold him to PSG for €43 million. So we can say Southampton completed a good deal for ‘just’ €14 million. Ramirez can dribble, kick with both feet, is quite speedy and has good stamina. He has to improve his mentality, stop (trash) talking with opponents and referee first."
He was a big hit at Bologna, do you think he can translate his play to the English game?
DL:- "I definitely believe he could be a star in the Premier League. The English game has more ‘spacing’ than the Italian one and Gaston is quite unstoppable if he can run."
What other players would you liken him to?
DL:- "I don’t want to be irreverent, but the best case is a sort of Zinedine Zidane."
Were you surprised to see him end up at a club like Southampton?
DL:- "Yes I was. Rumours told of interest from Liverpool and Tottenham and it was supposed he would join a Champions League/Europa League team. But the Saints offer was so rich and Gaston decided to not wait for a ‘big club’ anymore."
Many thanks to Daniele for answering these questions and getting me even more excited than I already was!

i reckon that by the end of october they will have settled in to being a league one side with gates that the average 7 year old could count.

But the banter with City fans was fun. With the United fans we need to really, really rip the p1ss. They're in the same position as Liverpool fans were 20 years ago and face a long, long spell without winning anything. Which is a shame, as this is the only reason 99% of their fans support them.

Looking forward to the scummers getting thrashed today. Should be relatively easy going for the visitors against the winless and going no place scummers.

"Flashin the pan" (which I assume is something to do with toilet behaviour by the KrapNottarf few) continues to amuse in much the same way that Pompey Phyliss and her two chums do. I must say, I owe them a debt of gratitude (if they know what that means) for giving me so much to laugh at for so many months now. Please, please, continue to venture forth with such wisdom whenever you feel like it. These days we could all do with something to put a smile on our faces. Thank you and keep up the good work girls!!

It really is quite sad that the only thing the poor devils have left to bolster their (false) pride at being the best of all possible fans is that a few saints fans sometimes leave the ground a few minutes before the end of a game in order to get a good start on their homeward journeys. Talk about clutching at straws. Give the lad a break. I mean, they are only getting 12k crowds compared to our 29-35K. He is too thick to realise just how pathetic he is. Have some sympathy. Don't leave him floundering on the shore flapping about the poor legless beastie. Chuck him back. Better still; use the priest and put him out of his misery.

Hope the new signings have pacified some of the doom and gloom contributors to this sight , the signing of Ramirez is not far off being as sensational as the deal to bring king Kev to the Dell . Mayaku and Yoshida , along with gaston are experienced internationals who will give NA options both defensively and attacking alongside the fact that Lee looked sharp on Tuesday means he has 4 more options for the coming season . Unlike most of the clubs around us we have paid fees for these players , how many of you feel the same as me that premiership clubs should not be able to loan players to other premiership clubs , west ham for instance have loaned a player who they would not of been willing to pay 30 million for cos they have not got that sort of money but his goals could relegate a club who were prepared to invest in their squad ?
I am delighted that the players we signed are our players and not a player that we are borrowing in order to increase the sell on value on behalf of the owner. Our philosophy shows long term planning for the club.

Our season needs to start.
It's a pity we will be unable to play our new signings but never mind.
Today is the day that those players who are selected need to step up to the plate.
No slacking,100% concentration.
Prove to all the doubters we are not here just for the ride.
We now have massive competition for places and that is how it should be.
We owe Man U big time.
Remember the relegation game from the Prem and the delight that certain Man U players got from that.
Remember all of the hurt we have had to endure since that time.
Remember the continuous mocking from our neighbours down the road.
Come on you Saints this now needs to be treated as the first cup final of the remaining 36 cup finals this season and we will WIN.
WE NEED TO SHOUT OUR SELVES HOARSE TODAY, GIVE OUR PLAYERS THE RESPECT THAT THEY DESERVE AFTER DRIVING THIS CLUB TO THE PINNICAL OF FOOTBALL IN THIS COUNTRY.
THE PREMIER LEAGUE.
Remember we are there on merit.
