Latest
- Manchester United beat Saints 3-2 with added-time winner.
- Robin van Persie scores a hat-trick.
- Saints had twice led, through Lambert and Schneiderlin.
- Kelvin Davis saved a Van Persie penalty.
5:54pm
FULL-TIME: Saints 2 Manchester United 3.
5:53pm
GOAL: Saints 2 Manchester United 3 (Van Persie 90+2): Nani's corner picks out Van Persie at the near post and he flicks a brilliant header past Kelvin Davis. That's harsh on Saints, who have been excellent today. Classic United, though, turning the game on its head late on.
5:49pm
GOAL: Saints 2 Manchester United 2 (Van Persie 87): Rafael's cross from the right picks out an unmarked Ferdinand. His downward header hits the post, but falls kindly to Van Persie inside the six-yard box and he puts the chance away.
5:41pm
Nigel Adkins makes his final substitution, withdrawing Lallana for Jay Rodriguez in the 79th minute.
5:37pm
Emmanuel Mayuka, who signed from BSC Young Boys earlier in the week, is on for his Saints debut, replacing Puncheon in the 74th minute. Guly do Prado is also on in place of Lambert.
5:31pm
PENALTY SAVE: Kelvin Davis gifts the ball to Nani with a misplaced pass. He works it to Van Persie, who is fouled in the area by Hooiveld. A clear penalty, but Davis redeems himself as he tips Van Persie's chipped penalty away.
5:25pm
A double substitution for United in the 61st minute. Cleverley and Kagawa come off to be replaced by Scholes and Nani. The changes nearly had an instant impact, as Scholes immediately played in Van Persie with a sublime ball, but Davis did well to save the striker's angled shot.
5:20pm
Puncheon nearly extended the lead for Saints in the 58th minute, tricking his way past Evra in the box , but Lindegaard kept out his shot at the near post.
5:18pm
GOAL: Saints 2 Manchester United 1 (Schneiderlin 55): St Mary's goes wild. This time it's a slip in the United defence that leads to a goal. Evra loses his footing, allowing Schneiderlin to race in and plant a brilliant header past Lindegaard from Lambert's cross.
5:11pm
No changes from either manager at the break. Kagawa goes close to nudging United ahead in the 49th minute, but plants his left-foot shot from the edge of the area just wide, following nice interplay between himself and Van Persie.
4:48pm
HALF-TIME: Saints 1 Manchester United 1.
4:45pm
Valencia picks out Evra at the far post, as Clyne slips again, but Kelvin Davis is on hand to push away the left-back's downward header in the 40th minute. Ward-Prowse and Lallana both saw earlier shots drift wide, as Saints continue to show they pose a threat.
4:34pm
Fantastic game so far. Rickie Lambert hit a stinging half-volley wide moments after Van Persie's equaliser, while the Dutchman curled a shot over the bar from the edge of the area at the other end in the 27th minute. The ex-Arsenal frontman had another opportunity two minutes later, with a free-kick just outside the area, following Fonte's trip on Welbeck, but he floated his effort wide.
4:28pm
GOAL: Saints 1 Manchester United 1 (Van Persie 23): Clyne slips as he tries to cut out Valencia's cross to the back post from the right wing, allowing Van Persie to chest the ball down and emphatically power it past Kelvin Davis.
4:22pm
GOAL: Saints 1 Manchester United 0 (Lambert 16): Schneiderlin pounces on the ball in midfield, plays it into Steven Davis, who in turn knocks it wide to Puncheon. He floats a lovely cross in towards the back post, where Lambert outjumps Rafael to head past Lindegaard.
4:12pm
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Manchester United have pinned Saints back in their own half in the early stages. Robin van Persie has come closest to scoring so far, chesting down Michael Carrick's deep pass in the sixth minute before hitting a first-time volley wide of the far post.
4:01pm
The teams are out on the pitch at St Mary's. Kick-off now just moments away.
3:50pm
New signing Gaston Ramirez has been paraded on the pitch to a great reception from the home fans. We should see him in action for the first time in a Saints shirt at Arsenal in just under two weeks' time.
3:26pm
Two changes for Saints from the side that lost 2-0 to Wigan last weekend at St Mary's. Guly do Prado and Jay Rodriguez drop to the bench, with teenager James Ward-Prowse and Jason Puncheon recalled to the starting line-up. That looks like being a midfield three of Schneiderlin, Ward-Prowse and Davis, with Puncheon and Lallana providing wide support to Lambert. Zambia striker Emmanuel Mayuka gets a place on the bench.
For United, the big news is that Rio Ferdinand makes a surprise return to the team, having recovered from a groin injury. Goalkeeper David de Gea is dropped in favour of Anders Lindegaard. Ashley Young is out injured, meaning Danny Welbeck is handed a start.
3:18pm
LINE-UPS:
Saints: K Davis, Clyne, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox, Ward-Prowse, Schneiderlin, S Davis, Puncheon, Lambert, Lallana.
Subs: Gazzaniga, Seaborne, Richardson, Rodriguez, Lee, Guly, Mayuka.
Manchester United: Lindegaard, Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Cleverley, Valencia, Kagawa, Welbeck, Van Persie.
Subs: De Gea, Evans, Giggs, Chicharito, Nani, Scholes, Powell.
Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral)
2:55pm
Nigel Adkins gives his views on the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson, who today takes charge of his 1,000th league game as Manchester United manager:
"I think it is going to be a one-off when you look at it realistically. Demands are placed in the modern game now for someone to stay at a football club for so long. But if you look at the
success they have had and the stability it has provided – the successful clubs probably have a consistent basis so maybe it is possible and that is the way to go. I had a good conversation with him
a few years ago and I asked him about the longevity of management and it was “move with the times” and if you surround yourself with younger people you probably act a bit younger as well. I think
he is a great example of how to do things. Obviously, at the time you think it is a long way away and very unrealistic I suppose for a Premier League club to go and bring a young manager in. So the
only way you are going to get there is to get a club promoted and we are delighted we have been able to do that at Southampton. "
2:49pm
Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck on what he is expecting from Saints:
"I have watched both their games so far. They have played some really good football and have a few players to watch out for. Adam Lallana in particular is excellent. But the most important
thing is to concentrate on our own team and make sure we play the right way."
2:47pm
Adam Lallana on how Saints plan to attack Manchester United today:
"You look around the pitch and they have got strength in every area, obviously Rooney was injured but Van Persie comes in. The experience they have got – Scholes, Giggs and Ferdinand, the list
is endless really. I think if we concentrate on what we are good at, we are at home I think we have got a chance of getting a result. I think Everton proved the other week that if you come out of
the traps and press them and get the fans behind you then you can create chances and go on to win games. I think we will play our own game…create chances and get crosses in the box and we have a
good chance."
2:34pm
Good luck to the lads today will be tough game.hopefully we will get 3 points.@Persie_Official to score 1st
— @WayneRooney 02 September 2012
2:14pm
EARLY TEAM NEWS: Manchester United’s main absentee this afternoon will be Wayne Rooney, after he sustained a nasty cut to his leg during last week’s game with Fulham. Ashley Young is also injured and set to miss out. There is better news at the back for Sir Alex Ferguson, though, with Jonny Evans fit to partner Nemanja Vidic in the centre of defence, meaning Michael Carrick can return to his normal midfield role. Phil Jones and Rio Ferdinand are both back in training, but are unlikely to be risked.
2:11pm
EARLY TEAM NEWS: Southampton will be without club record signing Gaston Ramirez, who did not complete his £12m move from Bologna in time to be eligible for this afternoon’s match. He should be unveiled to supporters before kick-off, though. Saints have also said that new centre half Maya Yoshida will not link up with the squad until after next week’s international break. However, Zambia striker Emmanuel Mayuka could make his debut, after joining from Swiss outfit BSC Young Boys earlier in the week. Midfielder Jack Cork is still likely to be out with an ankle injury.
2:00pm
Good afternoon everyone and welcome along to the Daily Echo’s blog covering today’s meeting between Saints and Manchester United, at St Mary’s (kick-off 4pm). Nigel Adkins’ team are still searching for their first point of the Premier League campaign, and it will be some achievement if they can get off the mark today, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men coming to town. However, there is hope for Saints, as United haven’t experienced the best of starts either, losing 1-0 at Everton in their opening game before scraping past Fulham 3-2 at Old Trafford last week. These contests are normally entertaining, and Saints have some fond memories to call on, notably the 6-3 victory at the Dell in October 1996, as well as the 3-1 win the season beforehand, when United wore (at least for some of the match) their infamous grey shirts. But United have been successful on their last four visits to St Mary’s, and will be desperate to give Ferguson a result to remember in his 1,000th league game in charge of the club. We will have the teams and updates for you throughout the afternoon.

Should Utd win it is better to lose at home against one of the best teams in Europe than to Oldham, don't you think?

The concern remains a defence which gives it all but just cannot last 90 minutes. Our best players are substituted because we have no defenders to come on.

We do not seem to learn a game lasts 90+ minutes. If my memory serves me correctly we seem to regularly ship late goals that prove costly and Man Utd are past masters at scoring late goals. With Arsenal finding their scoring touch after the next game we could be playing catch-up after just 4 games. It has to be said this was predicted by many pundits. We may be glad of the International break to allow time for the new boys to settle in. The next 2 home games - Villa & Fulham - have become must win games.
Apologies for the pessimism but I suspect most fans were expecting at least 3 points from the Wigan game. To have none and having conceded more goals than QPR and having lead both Man. City & Man. Utd only to lose shows a frialty that must be addressed.

1. Proud, very proud.
I was surprised by the starting line up (again) and (again) Nigel got it right.
2. My Man of the match was Spiderman (edged out Punch, because he scored).
3. Having praised Nigel, I must say, I totally agree with those questioning the subs. I was a bit surprised with the bench, to be honest. So many attacking options and no Luke Shaw!
But, I was sure Tad Lee would be the first on and Mayuka (being so new) wouldn't be risked. Re: Guly, I even said to my neighbour he wouldn't get on today because we needed players with pace and endless energy and that wasn't what he offered.
In saying all that, the problems remain at the back. Clyne aside (who had the wrong boots on), I thought they all coped well, given that it wss Manure. However, we gifted 3 poor goals - at any level. From the corner which led to the last goal, why did JWP have to mark two players at such a crucial moment, allowing RVP so much free space?
BUT, going back to my first point, any criticism of Nigel comes on the back of getting the starting line up right and, had we won (or drawn) we wouldn't be spending too long this PM questioning the subs.
Harsh lessons are being learnt and there are a lot of positives to take into the break.

On todays game, I think we were excellent apart from a few niggling traits that we need to shake off. We need to work on giving this kind of display against teams that will be in and around us; Fulham, Aston Villa and Stoke are all coming up relatively soon, and a couple of wins there (with todays mentality) will soon see us marching on. Ward-Prowse looks to be one heck of a prospect and I'm sure that we'll kick on after getting that first, imminent, victory out of the way. COYR.

Very disappointing. Will read with interest the comments of those who were there. Have a nasty feeling the substitutions will give rise to criticism (not for the first time) and also how the defence performed, this being the subject of concern over the past couple of weeks.

You refer to ,"pundits predictions" as if in some sadistic way to try and reinforce your own doubts.
Nigel Adkins, yes he is a newbie, who needs to get with the program ASAP, in my opinion,he slipped up today ,his best side on the day was on the pitch, but just pause for a minute, what if we had ramirez available ? OK we didnt, but we will have, cut the guy a bit of slack-please.
As regards the next two games being "must win",change that mindset to "will win".
Yep I was hoping for points against Wigan, but lets be honest to get Man C,Man U and Arsenal in the first 4 games back to the prem-we,ll be Ok,give the boys a chance, they wont let you down.

For a lot of the squad and the management it is a steep learning curve. As a manager substitutions can make you look great or sometimes a muppet – the reality is that you need good enough players on the field who can hold onto the ball (preferably by generating a goal threat) and see out the game. Unfortunately, in both today’s game and the city game at 2-1 I did not feel that was going to happen. Oh well on to Arsenal for what I suspect will be another severe test although at least their strikers are not in the class of RVP. Looking forward to seeing our new Uruguayan!

I would be be more inclined to blame the players that came on rather than Adkins, did they have the impact they should of? No!
Still very proud of the way we played for 80 mins and I believe once we get those first 3 points and close a game out we will be flying. Morgan and the front 3 were awesome and once again we have proved we can compete with the best in this league! Onwards and upwards I say.
I'm also quite glad the skanks from down the road come on here, your a joke and you know it some keep it coming boys!

A few from people I've seen before, but the minority.
Lambert himself has said that after 70 mins or so he's absolutely knackered these days (he is 30, remember). I'm prepared to bet that all the work with the GPS tracking over the close season backed that up, which is why they aren't playing him for 90 mins. Wenger used to get stick for not playing Bergkamp for full games until he showed Bergkamp the stats that showed he slowed down in the last 20 mins of every game. I'm sure something similar's happening with SRL.
Give NA some credit for knowing a little bit about what he's doing.
I do wonder whether you'd all be complaining about them if we'd held on.

I'm sorry to say but I thought the sub changes made led to the end result. Really thought Lee would be brought on. Also at that stage of such an important fixture (I know every fixture is important though) I was hoping that Mayuka wouldn't be risked as not having much training time as yet. And Guly. I know we'd be running out of subs on the bench but deep down I was really hoping Guly wouldn't be used at that stage either. I had a sick feeling in my stomach when he came on that this wouldn't end well.
(Now here's my big) BUT.
In Saints we have a team who will be feared in the Premier League. They should take great pride from their performance today. I feel proud to be one of their supporters. In Nigel Adkins we have a great Manager. He will know what went right today and where things went wrong. And if mistakes were made you can be sure they won't be made again. I just pray that Nicola still believes that in Nigel we have the best man for the job and that he doesn't make any rash decisions. This is a work in progress and at the moment it's progressing well and will only improve. Together as one. Bring on the Gooners.

For me, Lambert was a class above today...he gave Ferdinand a torrid time and "out bullied" Vidic's attempted bully-boy tactics. Easy to say now, but I think taking him and Puncheon off changed the game (Adam looked out on his feet imo....he'd given all).
All in all...we deserved more from the game, but United in the last 10 mins of any game are a machine.
If we can only put this level of effort in for the lessor games (and benefit from the newbies), I'm quite sure we'll be more than safe this season.

Blaming Guly for all three defeats is ridiculous. Considering how certain sections of the fans have treated him and Puncheon in the past it is seems a bit on the racist side. Our White players do not get panned with the same vitriol when they screw up. Guly's contributions are either ignored or quickly forgotten. When facts have been given illustrating his contribution they have been dismissed as irrelevant. It is disturbing how some seem to revel in self importance and assume we all moan or chuckle along when they get on their high horse and start the same old Guly bashing mantra. I hope more of the same

They won't win a game wearing the Liverpool look-a-like rubbish, adopted just to make money out of the fans.

Understandable perhaps against Man C and Man U, but Wigan at home?? AP had a much better record when he was bombed out.

1. The crowd. As the game was oh so totally utterly sold out to capacity, just 1000 empty seats is a very good performance.
2. The crowd. Most of them stayed until the 89th minute this time!! Good, they are learning.
3. The substitutions. Pure genius from Twadkins. A winning position against the champions-elect, turned into a loss within a few minutes. Arry will not make mistakes like that when he is manager next week.
4. The League position. Only 1 point behind Liverpool after 3 games. You'd certainly have taken that 2 weeks ago if it had been offered to you.

we had this game won our front three had Man U at sixes & sevens he took them off for faster players to break out of defence? surely having the ball up there end was the best form of defence?

Derby were officially relegated on 29 March after their 2–2 home draw with fellow strugglers Fulham and Birmingham City's 3–1 victory over Manchester City left them 19 points away from safety with only 6 games left. This made Derby the first club in Premiership history to be relegated in March and only the second in post-war English Football league history. They also accumulated the league's lowest points total since the introduction of 3 points for a win with just 11 points, as well as the record for the fewest wins in a Premier League season with just 1 victory in 38 games

We played a blinder today and every one of our players gave his all, each one making a number of telling contributions throughout the game.
It was a case of fine margins for how we lost today and it wasn't the fault of any of the subs or any of our players in particular and it was certainly nothing to do with our manager's decision making.
We were on the back foot before the subs were made for reasons that are more than things within Saints control. Ferguson knows a few things about winning games too, or do all the know alls on here think his team didn't come into the equation?
It might be easier to try and pin the blame on a specific player or on a specific decision, but it isn't like that and that is why I am eternally grateful that Adkins is our manager rather than any of you posters on here.
Adkins was imploring the team to push out towards the end, before the substitutions, and not get pegged into their area but they couldn't do it. He had to change something and freshen up the attack. Sadly, it wasn't quite enough, but we will learn from it and we will get better at dominating the best teams in the land, which we demonstrated we can do today.
The fans of the most successful clubs get behind their team no matter what. Perhaps if more Saints fans could get some perspective and not want to throw the baby out with the bath water just because we tired and made a few mistakes in the closing stages of the game, there is a chance that we could join that elite. I bet if Man Utd had lost today, their fans wouldn't have gone straight on to the fan sites berating Ferguson and his team, because they know one blip does not make a season.
It takes more than a good team, a good manager and a good chairman to be successful. It takes committed supportive fans to make it work. So perhaps you could all try and remember that next time things don't go our way or you don't agree with a decision or an action. Reserve your judgement until the end of the season and until then, zip it, find the positives and get behind the team.

Thought Lallana, Rickie and Puncheon were class today, JWP has come of age and S Davis was solid. My biggest concern is Fonte - he was beaten to the ball for the 3rd and doesn't seem to have the confidence. Kelvin makes me nervous too, but what can you say about a keeper that's saved 2 penalties already.
I'm not concerned about 0 points yet - today showed we can compete in this division. I can't wait to see Ramirez and Yoshida in the team. I think (hope) the performance against Wigan is the exception and not the norm.

Scholes made the difference for them when he came on – wonder if we should have man marked him. Was surprised we had no midfielders on the bench – would have been handy for exactly that role.
Nonsense to think that you can leave the same 11 on the field in the Premiership but I didn’t get putting Rodriguez out wide and Mayuka through the middle – surely it should have been the other way round if that is who he wanted to put on. Nothing wrong with Gully for Puncheon either if the latter was knackered but, again, where was the midfielder on the bench if the intention was to go more defensive.
But no complaints, we played well and could have gone on and won if we took some of the chances at 2-1. But we didn’t and they had Van Persie – what a player he is.
Overall I am encouraged that we can compete at this level and Ward-Prowse was a revelation – the complete midfield player at such an early age.
Fascinating that 7 of those who played today were playing for us in the third tier 2 years ago. Pardew and Adkins have done very well to buy and/or bring on these players.

A lot of my fellow Saints fans posting on here make me ashamed to be classed in the same bracket with you. Your narrow vision and selective viewing from today's game is appalling.
Remember In Adkins we Trust? I do and if you don't, go and watch the Skates instead, it would do us all a favour.

I will watch the rest of the season with interest and without further comment (not deluded enough to believe they will be missed) apart from as long as the effort and skill (both are important) that we showed today is repeated for the rest of the season (and this is the Premiership so what else would we do?) then we will be OK.

if you have any evidence of racist abuse then report it with my full backing, i would do the same.
you can disscus any concerns you like here thats why i like this site, however i said you should apologise because of the nature of your accusation. you cant just go around calling people racist without proof. that is almost as bad as racism itself.
you should read a few more of the post around this site about how fox and fonte are carp and should not play either, they take about the same abuse as guly. abusing any player is wrong imo, lets get behind the team and cheer them all on.
i am not having a go at you personally it was just the acusation of racist abuse that i didnt like and still feel should be retracted but as you said thats my opinion. if you dont agree then that is your opinion and we will have to agree to disagree, i just hope you can see that from some of the points i made you can see my point of view.

I honestly believe the ref gifted the game to Sir Alec as a 1000th game present. However we must ask was there a problem with the turf in that one slippery patch or was it just stud selection... slips cost two goals

Can't believe the criticism of NA's substitutions. How many times have we sung his praises for superb timing, remember Rickie and S Davis coming on and scoring a couple of weeks ago?
Also how many wanted Punch sold off yet today they moan because he came off!

you can disscus any concerns you like here thats why i like this site, however i said you should apologise because of the nature of your accusation. you cant just go around calling people racist without proof. that is almost as bad as racism itself.
you should read a few more of the post around this site about how fox and fonte are carp and should not play either, they take about the same abuse as guly. abusing any player is wrong imo, lets get behind the team and cheer them all on.
i am not having a go at you personally it was just the acusation of racist abuse that i didnt like and still feel should be retracted but as you said thats my opinion. if you dont agree then that is your opinion and we will have to agree to disagree, i just hope you can see that from some of the points i made you can see my point of view.
Fox and Fonte have been panned but not with the same vitriol or personal element as Guly. People have put forward stats to show Guly's pass completion rate was second to none over the first two matches and actually Lallana was more guilty of giving the ball away. and the reaction was "I don't care I hate Guly"
I did not acuse people who hate Guly of being racist, I just said the way Guly and Puncheon have been treated "appeared a bit on the racist side".
The personal nature of the comments and the blind hatred which comes through (despite evidence to the contrary), is in excess of other players. As such, though I am not accusing of anybody specific of racism, I would stand by the observation that an argument can be made that it can come across that way.
I respect your position and will happily agree to disagree.

Barney played as soon as he was fit so can't really see him as a paralell. also Seabourne was out partying as well when he got clocked, and hasn't faced sanction. I am not sure you can punish Guly for partying as it would be a tad unfair, but the drink driving and his response (role model for youngsters) he should be answerable for,

Also not too sure you mean about what I am "up against", but Ibet it's really really scary or something.

I thought we played very well today but I am starting to notice a pattern in the way we fade in the second half, it has happened in all three games now and makes me wonder if we have a stamina issue. Man City, Wigan and Utd all overpowered us in the last 20 minutes and the results speak for themselves, its not just physical tiredness but mental aswell when players switch off and lose their markers and we concede goals that are more gifts from us than the other teams brilliance. I'm not a Guly fan and have made that clear in other posts but he was'nt the problem today, our problem was a slip by Clyne which effectively gave VP a free shot at goal, we never made one blocking tackle on the left today because Fox is too far away from the winger and instead of closing down and preventing any crosses coming in he almost encourages them to put the crosses in, his positional play is alarming at times. Fonte did look nervous today and gave it the big hoof far more than he usually does. A good coach will always tell you to stand tall in the box and dont dive in which is exactly what Jos did'nt do and gave away the needless penalty. But my biggest concern today was Kelvin Davies, he just causes panic at every opportunity, his kicking and distribution for a professional footballer are woeful considering he is practising this seven days a week. Please NA give Gazzaniga a go and really cant be any worse, but I will finish on a positive as NA would say, we will kick on from today and I am confident our first win is not far away. What he did in his car will be handled by the club and the law. He'll get his punishment and probably deserve it.
As for his play, he is frustrating, we all know that. Others are also frustrating but don't get the same abuse. To say otherwise would be rubbish. The question is, given that on occasions he has won us matches, contributed through some great performances and, on bad days, been no worse than others, why does he get singled out? When he is one of the worst players on the pitch, it's fair to point that out, but your arguements are watered down because, no matter what the facts, you pick on Guly. Racist? No, I doubt it. Biased? Yes, very.

We lost because we didn't stop Paul Scholes playing. He drops off and occupies no man's land sprays passes about everywhere and dictates the tempo of the game. While at the same time United push up their back four and we drop off into our own half. Scholes took the initiative off of us, beat the drum and changed the rhythm of the game. He should have been closed down and turned round to face his own back four.
The three substitutions within four minutes were a tactical mistake. You can't do that against great teams. We are playing in the Premier League not the Championship. When Lambert went off Ferdinand and Vidic were able to move up the pitch. Perhaps Jay Rod should have been in the central striking position?
Everything is easy in retrospect. We played superbly at times. The defence needs to be strengthened. But our pattern of play is encouraging. COYR.

Removing the excellent trio of Jason Puncheon, Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana (for Emmanuel Mayuka, Guly Do Prado and Jay Rodriguez between the 72nd and 80th minutes) represented a collection of gambles. The idea was to bring on fresh legs but they simply replaced the main men who had been troubling United. Southampton’s cutting edge disappeared, United pushed on even more and Ferguson was treated to that grandstand finish.

as for being gulys pr agent etc. i have said on many occasions that i am no big fan of guly. i think he is an ok player, i feel he has been played out of position too often which doesn`t help. i have seen guly have some shocking games for saints, as have most players, what happens to guly though is wrong, singling out him for criticism all the time. he has been blamed for every loss this season (and at the end of last). when he did ok in the first 2 and had very little to do with yesterdays, i also said i wouldnt have played him yesterday, i would have brought lee on instead hitting a tired utd back 4 with pace, though that might have led to us losing by more who knows, i do know that i am glad i am not the manager and i dont have to make these choices.

Guly gets singled out because he is just not good enough. Look at the difference in Saints performance yesterday without him in the team. Guly never attacks the fullback like Puncheon did. Everything that is wrong with Guly was shown when he came on as sub and showed absolutely no desire at all just strolled around like always and no impact as always. He plays lots of nice on the eye passes in areas where threr is no danger but nothing where it counts.
To cite 20 minutes yesterday as your case is laughable. Puncheon was great yesterday but if you want to compare commitment guile and contribution to the team it's Guly by a mile. As always. You're a judge of football and you seriously think
he's come on in the best game at SMS in years with Saints 2-1 up v Utd live on Sky and strolled around and showed no desire? Yeh right.

One good thing, three games in and not many premiership teams can boast thrilling and pulsating in their most of their BBC match reports.

Yeh right.

Terrific game if a gut wrenching end. Ward-Prowse and Morgan our top two for me, although I thought only Fox was poor – haven’t seen the TV coverage yet so don’t know what role Fonte played in their last two goals.
