SAINTS have again been linked with a shock move for free agent Italian striker Alessandro Del Piero.
Reports in Italy claim the club have offered the former Juventus star a contract to move to St Mary’s.
The 37-year-old appeared to be joining Australian side FC Sydney last week, but that deal has yet to be formalised.
World Cup winner Del Piero is also said to be attracting interest from Celtic, Portuguese side Braga and Swiss outfit Sion.
Saints manager Nigel Adkins has already seen his attacking options significantly bolstered this summer, with the signings of Jay Rodriguez , Emmanuel Mayuka and Gaston Ramirez.
“We’re a newly-promoted football club, the chairman’s done great, we’ve just bought a few more players in the transfer window,” he said.
Adkins was understandably more concerned about defensive issues after yesterday’s dramatic 3-2 home loss to Manchester United than he was his forward line.
The Saints boss was frustrated at how his side failed to deal with two deliveries into the box in the dying minutes that led to a pair of Robin van Persie goals and a complete change in the result.
Firstly, an unmarked Rio Ferdinand was allowed to head Rafael’s cross against a post, with the rebound falling to Van Persie, who equalised with three minutes left.
Then, in the second minute of added time, the Dutchman was afforded too much room at the near post by Jose Fonte , ruthlessly punishing Saints by flicking in Nani’s corner to complete his hat-trick.
“There’s two free headers inside our penalty area,” said Adkins.
“You’ve got to defend your goal better than that.”
He added: “The last goal, we’ve got to go and defend and attack that ball better.
“At the end of the day they’ve got two first contacts on the ball from crosses into the box and that’s the annoying thing.”
Adkins insisted there were plenty of positives to take from yesterday’s defeat, despite its heartbreaking nature.
But he said Saints must now start turning performances into points.
“We’ve put ourselves in a position to pick up points again and unfortunately we haven’t done,” he said.
“Two good goals we’ve scored, played some good football at times, the atmosphere in here was bouncing, but we haven’t picked any points up.
“We knew that the opening fixtures would teach us a lot about the Premier League and they certainly have.
“To play Manchester City away and play Manchester United and go and score goals against them is the pleasing thing.
“So we know we’ve got goals in the team.
“What we’ve got to do is make sure we put ourselves in a position defensively to keep more clean sheets, because you’re going to get punished at this high a level.”

I haven't read other posts from yesterday yet but what Adkins says about defending at the end of the match was revealing. I believe that taking off Lambert and Puncheon were mistakes.

I agree about Puncheon but we know he blows hot and cold. If he can play consistently like that I agree with you.
What I can see is a very good team emerging that needs to concentrate throughout the game and above all cut out the small errors. They cost you goals at this level !!

The ref allowed both teams to play on rather than award free kicks so there weren't any lengthy stoppages throughout the whole game and especially in the second half.
One minute added on the first half and 4 for the second doesn't make sense to me either.
Having said that Fonte was about 4 minutes late to react to RVP's third!
RVP stole a yard as did the Wigan forward last week and in these league you get punished.
Let's get another narrow defeat out the way at the Gooners and then go on an unbeaten run up to Christmas.
We are playing well bar two positions and think everyone now knows what ones.
COYR FOADP...It could be worse we could be win less in League 1, have home gates of under 14000, a run down shed for a ground, players we couldn't actually call ours or pay every week, the possibility of being liquidated in a fortnight or bled dry by a previous owner, or the indignity of cheating our way through each month and knowing everyone in football despises you.

Just having experience like that around the place, in training, on the bench, 20 minute cameos at the end to hold the ball up better, being a guide for younger strikers to learn off etc
All of that is invaluable, if he raises the game of each of our centre-forwards by 5%, as well as contributing at times himself too, then it is money well spent.
Think of the future, maybe he wants to coach, maybe he will come in an unofficial player/coach capacity to bring on our youngsters.
Have faith that NC/NA aren't fools.....

Agree with the wrong players being took off and the wrong players coming on. We needed Lambert on that pitch for the full game yesturday he was playing their two centre backs superbly all afternoon. Punchy has proved he can put in a performance and should of stay on. I would of taken lallana off and brought on Tadanari Lee to play up front . That way i feel we would have had crosses coming in from the wings, knock downs in and around the box from R L and speed to reacted to the chances we could have made.
Also by keeping Ricky on he could have gave us much better cover from corners . I am not someone who is always shouting Gully out but as of yet i feel he has done very little on the pitch so far this season. Jose is really out of his depth this season . We can only hope the new C B can plug the gaps in the six yard box to stop these damaging free headers.
After saying this i feel we should not forget who we were playing and the way we played for most of the game. NIGEL will make mistakes , the real crime will be if he dont lean from them.
After our next game the start from hell will be over and i think we will be in the position most of us thought we would be in when we first saw the fixtures. We will then be playing teams that are not in the top six and on two of our performances so far and the new players to come in the points will start to come. I feel we have shown we wont do a Burnley but have enough skill and heart to stay in the PREMIERSHIP.

At 2-1 up in the 90th minute against one of the best teams in world, he probably thought he was about to be hailed a genius.
But of course many, if not most of us, could see that 2-3 was in fact the inevitable outcome. Most also knew that the subs brought on with their fresh legs would mess things up.
Thankfully Nigel did listen pre-season and kept fans' long-time favourite Puncheon on board and played him yesterday. If only the fans had yelled out their so familiar cry "Keep Punch on!" before the substitution was made.
We should get rid of Nigel now and hire one of the 'Match of the Day' pundits. Like most of us, they always seem to know exactly why a team lost.

His name is Scholes, he came on and totally dictated play.
I like many of the posters on here have an issue withour subs.
Rickie was knacke@, not surprising carrying 2 defenders on his back most of the game.Had to come off.
Lee should have come on to get behind their defence.
J Rod should have replaced Rickie up the middle.
Our new signing should have gone wide.
Nigel knows football and should have put Steve Davis on Scholes and made him stay with him.
Some may say it's easy in hind sight but I watched the game at SMS and to me it was obvious at the time.
Unfortunately once again we leaked the first goal from our left back positon.I accept Nat Clyne should have been wearing the correct studs but the cross should have been prevented.
Again prior to Scholes arrival, Man U's most effective player was Valencia.
I take no delight in reminding those that read and post on this sight that I made a statement last season at my concern that Dan Fox will be found out this season, deffencively against such names as Nanni,Valencia,Lenno
n,Young.ETC.
Something has to stop this leek we have conceded goals from this position in all 3 games and it has to stop NOW.
All this said overall Saints were deserving of at least a point.
It's a very hard league and the games last 94 minutes.

We all offer our opinions, merely as concerned fans and in some cases rightfully so, but we need to learn, it's been a long time since we had an opportunity to play in this league and I for one am loving every second! We're favourites for relegation, so why not enjoy and I'm pretty sure we'll surprise everyone.

we have so far been better than the top 2 teams in the league (for most of the game) and will go on to pick up loads of points. i am not worried by the the arse and think we might get a result against them.
as for the wigan game i think that we all expected to win that and were dissapointed that we didnt, maybe we should have won, i do know that our new signings are going to scare some defenders witless, and i cant wait!

It's a shame Wigan came too early for us. We have found our feet a little bit now, and the new signings should be settled enough by the end of the month to contribute effetcively from October onwards.
Meanwhile, bring on Tadanari! He looks the business last season for a game or two, and we have so many Japanese fans showing up at St Mary's that it cant hurt to try him out when Lambert wanes after the 65th minute.

When we played 442 the wide players tracked back and helped cut out crosses, leaving the full backs to pick up knock downs etc.
Yesterday the Utd wide players had too much time to pick out their crosses, enabling them to find the unmarked players in the box.
Yesterday was not a disaster. What will be a disaster is if, when we play Arsenal, their wide players have as much time to cross the ball as Utd's did.
Being positive, this is a relatively simple problem to solve.
When we don't have the ball Lallana and Puncheon MUST fall back and sit in front of the full backs.
This allows the back four to remain more compact, when crosses do come in, hopefully meaning no more unmarked players.

i always thought the manager and director of football sat down with the scouting team and they all selected the players they thought were best. It was then handed over to the chairman to broker the deal....but wait, your way makes so much more sense! Not only does the chairman run the club he also scouts the player, chooses the player and buys the players...tough job!

I'm ambivalent about Derek Peters. On the one hand it would contradict the philosophy of bringing in hungry youngsters but, equally, it would be a buzz to see him in a Saints shirt and would raise our profile to prospective new recruits from around Europe. He could also probably do a job against tiring defenders for the last 20 minutes. So if he's looked after himself, as most Italians seem to, then why not take a punt?

Anyway, NC may well be a control freak, I don't care. He controls the most important thing .. the money. And he has turned the tap on when needed. Nigel knows where the weaknesses are but top class CBs do not grow on trees.
I certainly don't think Nigel is the coach for Nicolas players. I think we have cast the net wide and simply been more fortunate in getting strikers over defenders.
They are both doing just fine.
Remember - We are long past the days of Voldemort when an underfinded city boy borrowed too much money and sank the ship.
How can people be so critical of a team that has returned to the top flight years ahead of expectations and now has a squad of players that is the envy of the Premiership. We may be bottom, but WE KNOW that won't last long ... the Saints are coming and there isn't a team in this league that is looking forward to playing us. Fact.

I'm ambivalent about Derek Peters. On the one hand it would contradict the philosophy of bringing in hungry youngsters but, equally, it would be a buzz to see him in a Saints shirt and would raise our profile to prospective new recruits from around Europe. He could also probably do a job against tiring defenders for the last 20 minutes. So if he's looked after himself, as most Italians seem to, then why not take a punt?

NA should get real we want a new goalkeeper, KD is just not up to the sharpness of Premier League strikers and against Man U sold his defenders short by gifting perfectly weighted, along the ground passes to Man U strikers.
As for some of the defenders they ran around like headless chickens.
Unless NA does something about the defence he won't last long as Saints manager and Saints will be a one season wonder in the Premiership.
8 goals conceded in 3 games, a 2-0 home defeat to the likes of Wigan and looking for a striker? -- it'll soon be time for the men in white suits to carry poor Nigel away, he's lost it!!

in addition to Les Reed who is closer to Nicola than Les Reed? I guess we will never know.
I would prefer to hear about experienced defenders, rather than old Italian forwards who are thinking of playing in OZ.
I fear for Nigel. Will he have a free hand to pick the team if results don't improve rapidly. Les Reed interfered at Charlton, became manager and things went down hill from that point, until Chris Powell was appointed.

Have faith that NC/NA aren't fools.....

But can I add...Del Piero isn't an out an out striker he plays behind the striker so more of a playmaker...take Gaston off with 15-20 mins to go and replace him with experience and another world class player, PERFECT!!

I think honestly, I was expecting we'd get beaten by about 3 in each game..hence the utter nerves I felt all weekend and during both games. The problem was Saints then gave me a glimmer of hope, only to be cruelly dashed!
Anyway, we came out with alot of positives I hadn't expected, so feel actually quite good on that front. However, it's the defeat against Wigan that worries me, as we really need to be up for the games against similarly placed teams, especially at home, as that's what will build our foundations.
Agree with Seedhouse that we need to look at reality, and that, at least for this season, is that we have a large number of the team who are seriously stepping up a level, and it will take time/luck for them to get to grips with this league. That said, if we can be positive like we were for 80 minutes again yesterday, we will win enough home points, coupled with a fair return away, to keep us in the league. If we can hold our heads above water, and not press the panic button/get delirious that because we're not pushing for Europe, that Adkins must go, then it will allow us to gradually build the squad during the January window, and next summer, to have a stronger 'premiership' quality group.
Let's just do the following, please?
1. Get behind the boys/management. They want what we want-success and premier league long term survival
2. Be realistic- if we can finish in 17th place this year, it would be an incredible achievement, and lay the foundations for a long stay back where we belong
3. Ignore Skunt WUMs. Of course they're on here-just like there are supposed Saints fans on the News site. But seriously, no point getting wound up-we'll leave that to the league to do that to them.
4. Be excited-we're going to be seeing the current heroes like Adam and Rickie be joined by Gaston, as well as Yoshida+Mayuka, and a fit again Tad Lee! Get the defence better organized to save some nerves, and let the attacking make us happy!
We're in the Premier League again-waited too long for it, so let's bloody enjoy it!!

We have just played the reigning premier league champions,the champions elect ,champions league quality teams and more than held our own oh and unfortunately Wigan.(a mere blip)

Two fantastically successful seasons and then 3 games in to the third he's being tipped for the chop. I'd rather be a lumberjack in the Sahara.
So yeah, even on his happiest day as a manager, Adkins looked like he'd been told to go make snowmen in the desert.
Let's hope we stick with Adkins for a rocky forst top-flight season as man u did with fergie for his first season in charge. This won't be an easy year, but we have the best chance if we stick with Adkins,who knows this team better than anyone.

I think honestly, I was expecting we'd get beaten by about 3 in each game..hence the utter nerves I felt all weekend and during both games. The problem was Saints then gave me a glimmer of hope, only to be cruelly dashed!
Anyway, we came out with alot of positives I hadn't expected, so feel actually quite good on that front. However, it's the defeat against Wigan that worries me, as we really need to be up for the games against similarly placed teams, especially at home, as that's what will build our foundations.
Agree with Seedhouse that we need to look at reality, and that, at least for this season, is that we have a large number of the team who are seriously stepping up a level, and it will take time/luck for them to get to grips with this league. That said, if we can be positive like we were for 80 minutes again yesterday, we will win enough home points, coupled with a fair return away, to keep us in the league. If we can hold our heads above water, and not press the panic button/get delirious that because we're not pushing for Europe, that Adkins must go, then it will allow us to gradually build the squad during the January window, and next summer, to have a stronger 'premiership' quality group.
Let's just do the following, please?
1. Get behind the boys/management. They want what we want-success and premier league long term survival
2. Be realistic- if we can finish in 17th place this year, it would be an incredible achievement, and lay the foundations for a long stay back where we belong
3. Ignore Skunt WUMs. Of course they're on here-just like there are supposed Saints fans on the News site. But seriously, no point getting wound up-we'll leave that to the league to do that to them.
4. Be excited-we're going to be seeing the current heroes like Adam and Rickie be joined by Gaston, as well as Yoshida+Mayuka, and a fit again Tad Lee! Get the defence better organized to save some nerves, and let the attacking make us happy!
We're in the Premier League again-waited too long for it, so let's bloody enjoy it!!

Best players news for saints in the last six weeks is that James Ward-Prowse looks like a 17 year old Scholes: the physical resemblance is passable, the playing resemblance is mind-blowing. Hugely enjoying life back in the Prem & we haven't even won yet.
We are gaining more & more respect wherever we go, doing things the right way from top to bottom.
The whingers & moaners should take note & respect what has been, is & will be achieved in the future.
We are on a mission, it's so early in the season & we have seen a lot of positives already.
There are new signings who haven't even had time to play yet, & players coming back from injury.
So, be patient, respectful & keep supporting the team (after all, as fans, isn't that what we're meant to do)?

firstly did we not pretty much outplay united up to the point of the substitutions.we lost not because of the substitutions but because fergie introduced probably the best passer of a football ever to grace the prem in scholes.he single handely grabbed hold of midfield and they slowly cranked up the pressure by keeping the ball and we slowly got deeper and deeper.this would have happened had adkins made any subs or not
lallana and lambert were knackered so getting them off and fresh legs on was a good ploy but the gap between front and back got too big an as united pressed higher and higher up the pitch we got more and more defensive.the pressure told in the end, but how many teams have a pass master as good as scholsey. we will have to face midfields nowhere near as good as uniteds so I'm fairly confident that we will get on the winning trail soon.arsenal will be another tough one but that will be three of the harder games out of the way.and how anybody could even think of calling for nigels head,well that is the most ridiculous thing I think I'v ever heard
get off gullys back and support the boys
ramirez will take gullys spot anyway but lets not give him a load of abuse when or if he comes off the bench

Secretly I was expecting to get turned over by both Manc clubs. We performed brilliantly and all my 'neutral' friends (ie not Saints or skunts) are really impressed with us so far. The fixture draw was what it was and gave us an incredibly tough start and we have really competed.
Half those that played yesterday played for us in league 1. I think many have lost the plot in the expectations department. The new signings have yet to train with the squad yet alone adapt to the EPL.
If we do get relegated, and I don't think we will, the parachute payments mean we don't need to break the team up and can continue to develop for the long term. Many clubs yoyo before stabilising.
I think honestly, I was expecting we'd get beaten by about 3 in each game..hence the utter nerves I felt all weekend and during both games. The problem was Saints then gave me a glimmer of hope, only to be cruelly dashed!
Anyway, we came out with alot of positives I hadn't expected, so feel actually quite good on that front. However, it's the defeat against Wigan that worries me, as we really need to be up for the games against similarly placed teams, especially at home, as that's what will build our foundations.
Agree with Seedhouse that we need to look at reality, and that, at least for this season, is that we have a large number of the team who are seriously stepping up a level, and it will take time/luck for them to get to grips with this league. That said, if we can be positive like we were for 80 minutes again yesterday, we will win enough home points, coupled with a fair return away, to keep us in the league. If we can hold our heads above water, and not press the panic button/get delirious that because we're not pushing for Europe, that Adkins must go, then it will allow us to gradually build the squad during the January window, and next summer, to have a stronger 'premiership' quality group.
Let's just do the following, please?
1. Get behind the boys/management. They want what we want-success and premier league long term survival
2. Be realistic- if we can finish in 17th place this year, it would be an incredible achievement, and lay the foundations for a long stay back where we belong
3. Ignore Skunt WUMs. Of course they're on here-just like there are supposed Saints fans on the News site. But seriously, no point getting wound up-we'll leave that to the league to do that to them.
4. Be excited-we're going to be seeing the current heroes like Adam and Rickie be joined by Gaston, as well as Yoshida+Mayuka, and a fit again Tad Lee! Get the defence better organized to save some nerves, and let the attacking make us happy!
We're in the Premier League again-waited too long for it, so let's bloody enjoy it!!

its all good.... just don't expect NA to still be in a job automatically whatever happens..... the Prem is a big step up for all, players, staff, supporters too. Its not a negative/positive thing... its a realistic thing. we need points in the next 10 games..
What you and I don't know is how hard NA may have been pushing for LB and CB signings. Maybe he kept being presented with another attacking player! Without that knowledge we can't really judge his transfer policy.

I really think we need some perspective here. We have played the two top teams in the league and have given them both a huge fright and we can be justifiably proud of the team. Rickie has shown he is going to be a big force as usual and he is a natural goalscorer - unplayable in the air and with a terrifc touch for a big man. Adam likewise looks instantly comfortable and hanging on to him will be our biggest cause of concern. The rest of the team have all raised their games and the next few weeks are going to be the real test as to if we can keep this level of intensity against the less fancied sides. Give Nigel Adkins a break - he has worked miracles the last two years and is on as big a learning curve as a number of our players. He will get it right and we are playing some brilliant football that is earning rave reviews from our peers and the press alike. Every game is going to have to be a mini cup final and we need to treat them as such. I am looking forward to the extra depth that the new boys will bring and as long as its not much money then what the hell - Del Piero would be worth having just for the experience for the rest of the team. Lets not panic and lets get behind the guys for the rest of the season. We need sensible heads - the last thing we want is for panic and for Nigel to be sacked for some over paid ex big time manager with an overrated record to be brought in. I last came over in Nov 2010 when we beat posh 4-0 and drew with Brighton 1-1.. there were "fans yelling at Rickie and other calling him a lazy **** and some calling alan pardew a clueless fwit. One in front of me left his 4 year old and 2 year old for the best part of the match alone while he was in the bar...
SMS and the massive core of fans are brilliant.. the atmosphere was great.. great to be there but it's good to remember that the fans should never be judged by the negative boo brigade that slag the second we lose a few..
All the pundits agree Saints have surprised with their start and have a lot more to offer.. we'll be on the up very soon.

One thing is for certain, we are ahead of the game as far as investing in young talent is concerned and other big time clubs are playing catch up. NC and the team have done an outstanding job in rebuilding our club and regardless of the fact we dont have any points, I have never seen Saints as exciting as they are now. We have so much to be proud of, its early days and hopefully everythng will come good. Devastated that we lost but so so proud of the boys, at least we dont have the debt that Liverpool have, taste of reality for them. For us...onward and upward

As a result the ones with the triple brain cells will try and infiltrate masquerading as Saints to create disharmony and disunity.
I fear the worst for them and have asked Marwell Zoo to build a shack and chuck hippo **** everywhere to closely replicate their natural habitat in preparation to house a brother sister breeding pair as they are in such low numbers now they are officially on the endangered list. It's a sad state of affairs.
Anyway, to become champions of Europe I think we need a new LB and CB.

His record is exemplary, the critics say he has no top level experience, that is true .. but all premiership managers had to have a first season in a top job no matter where. Adkins time is now and I wish him well and support him completely.
We had possibly the hardest fixture list for the first five games, only swapping Chelsea for Wigan would have made it harder.
The club has made money available, players have been purchased, some have yet to play. We have lost against the two Manchester clubs but played extremely well .. certainly no cause for any sackings.
The rumour is almost certainly because the press always lie to pick on someone. Usually they go for higher profile names like AVB, the only sacred name seems to be Ferguson (and possibly Moyes).
I have faith in NA and I have faith in NC. I know that he will show his absolute professionalism and let the man he employed do his job.
With the players Adkins now has we have the opprtunity to make the season an outright success.
As for the suggestions that Harry is a candidate, how ridiculous can you get. Would the Liebherr family representative really employ a man who's dog has a bank account and who was the luckiest man since OJ Simpson to be acquitted of a crime.
I am content that good sense will prevail and that all this nonsense will drift away like a bad smell on the wind.

What you and I don't know is how hard NA may have been pushing for LB and CB signings. Maybe he kept being presented with another attacking player! Without that knowledge we can't really judge his transfer policy.

His results speak for themselves and so I am happy to give him my support until, if it became apparent, he gets out of his depth. That time may be here by Christmas or may never come, either way he has earnt our backing so far. The money we spent in the transfer market was unbelievable ! Somr things need attention but Saints football has never been better, the future has never been brighter. I have never been prouder than I am now and my history goes wayyyyyyy back
