Del Piero confirms Sydney move
12:04pm Wednesday 5th September 2012 in Saints News
Alessandro Del Piero
Alessandro Del Piero has confirmed his move to Australian club Sydney FC this lunchtime, despite interest from Saints and Liverpool.
The 37-year-old former Juventus striker told a press conference in Turin that he has joined the A-League side.
"It is a special day for me. I am happy to announce that I have signed the agreement with Sydney for the next two years," said the World Cup winner.
Del Piero's move to Sydney hit the headlines last week, however, completion of the deal was delayed after Saints and Liverpool made late offers.
In addition to those two clubs, Sydney also have reportedly also fended off interest from Champions League clubs Celtic and Braga as well as Swiss side Sion.
"This signing is a major coup for Sydney FC and marks a historic day for football in this country," said chairman Scott Barlow.
"Alessandro Del Piero is a global icon of the game and we are honoured he has chosen Sydney FC, ahead of many other options, as the club where he will begin the next chapter of his illustrious football career."
Del Piero, who turns 38 in November, made 91 appearances for Italy and is the all-time leading goalscorer for Juventus.
He joins a list of former stars to have joined the A-League late into their career that includes the likes of Robbie Fowler, Romario, Juninho and Dwight Yorke.

poor fellas seems like getting through to the next round of the paint pot trophy might have been for nothing.
by the way fishys you didnt win the game last night, that ended in a draw! you won the penalty shootout. same overall result but when you come on here shouting about winning a game think about that first!
when you see the result written down it will say the score 2-2 and then poopey won 4-3 on pens!

If this hadn't dragged on there would have been no news at all !!
The groundsman was horrified yesterday morning to find 35 separate dead grass holes on the otherwise immaculate pitch. Last night analysts said they were in fact p!ssholes caused by a single neutered dog.
But - a stray or owner encouraged - and will it be back? A 24 hour watch is in place.
Then the story really took off. An aerial photo taken by a Flybe passenger, shows the p!ssholes form the blurred shapes of the head of the Judean prophet Isaiah facing his arch enemy, the very evil Hezekiah.
This could all signal serious trouble ahead and I am far more concerned about it than I ever was about Del going to Oz.
If I was the Echo editor you can rest assured this would have been the lead story today.

When people are described as a legend it means their best is behind them.
Perhaps now, the management of SFC will face up to the real issues of surviving in the Premiership and not becoming a one season wonder.
With the money saved on DelBoy's salary the first priority is to ditch over the hill KD and sign a world class goalkeeper, remember LMcM said a great goalkeeper is worth 10 points a season and he should know what he's talking about --- maybe a poor goalkeeper costs the team 10 points a season, judging by KD's recent performances that may well be an understatement.
Second is to buy two experienced defenders and third is to dump the1970's retro Liverpool kit.
If NA doesn't wake up soon he'll be out of a job and Saints will be relegated next May!!!
This is a plea from a Saints supporter!!

We will find our feet eventually in this league, let's be honest we watched time and time again errors that we knew would be punished in the prem..suicide cross field balls being cut out, crap misdirected defensive headers, and so on......but certain players have already performed better than expected the rest will catch up or be shipped out...we will come good.....and there it is.

I would prefer to watch the Saints play football in their traditional red and white football shirts for which they are known throughout the country, rather than a tee shirt like the ones you can pick up in Asda, Primark and Tesco for a song.

I love the fact that the Echo have managed to get four stories out of one very thin tale.
As it really does take two to have an argument, I do wonder why they aren't talking to NC about getting back on the favoured list so they can give us some real news occasionally rather than just stuff scraped off other news websites.
Apologise to NC for the original leak (was it three years ago now?) for heaven's sake! You might make some progress if you do.
On the St Marys ban: I'm not sure it qualifies as a "leak" when the local newspaper reports on a publicly available planning permission request from the local football club. Even though cortese told them not to report it (they had a press release coming), the Echo was well with its rights to run the story, and Im glad they did.
Good reporting got them banned. Good reporting will get them un-banned eventually. Agreeing to be censored by a local businessman (even nc) would be a death blow to our long-term hopes of having strong local news coverage of Saints.

Isn't it time we had interviews and comments from our new Zambian, Japanese and Uruguayan players?
"We are here to get into the Champions League"
""This is the best team in the world"
"My whole life Ive dreamed of playing here"
You know.. the usual stuff we get fed when there's an international game weekend break.
