Dean Hammond thinks it was the right time for him to leave Southampton
8:58am Thursday 6th September 2012 in Saints News
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Dean Hammond at the Amex Stadium in Brighton
DEAN Hammond admitted the time was right to leave Saints after signing for his old club Brighton on a season- long loan deal.
The midfielder moved back to the Seagulls in the final moments of transfer deadline day, rejoining the team he started his career with.
While the deal is only a temporary one for now, it appears unlikely that the 29-year-old will be seen in a Saints shirt again.
Hammond certainly played an important role in the club’s rise from the depths of League One to the Premier League .
But, after helping them back into the top-flight, it became clear he would have to look elsewhere for regular first-team football.
“The three years I have been there I have played 85 to 90 per cent of the games and captained the team as well,” he said.
“We just came back and the club made the decision they were going to bring some more midfield players in.
“I am the type of player who wants to play football. I don’t want to just be within a 25-man squad in the Premier League.
“As soon as I knew of Brighton’s interest I jumped at the chance. “I could quite easily have stayed at Southampton , but once the opportunity came there was no turning back.
“When I first went to Southampton the ambition was to get back in the Championship and once we did that the ambition was to get in the Premier League and we achieved it, with a similar squad of players.
“Southampton are probably going down a different route now. They are investing heavily in the squad and they have got the financial backing to do it.”
Hammond, who has made 145 appearances and scored 11 goals at Saints following his move from Colchester in 2009, doesn’t believe his Premier League dream is over, though.
He is confident that at Brighton, with manager Gus Poyet in charge, he can get back into the top division.
“It’s everyone’s dream to play in the Premier League but I cannot see why Brighton can’t do that, the way the club is now,” he said.
“It’s fantastic the way they play football and the facilities. I would say Brighton have got as much chance as we had last year with Southampton.
“The squad here is very similar, the type of player, the way the football is played, so I can’t see why not. The Championship is a very tough league and there are a lot of good teams in it.
“Probably 15 teams will be saying the same thing I’m saying, but it’s just getting a bit of momentum going.
“Once you are winning games – and the boys have started the season really well – you never know what can happen.”

Just disappointed he apologiesed to the Brighton fans for his celebrations at their place the season before last. No need to apologise - their players would have done the same!

Will certainly be welcomed back at SMS, did a great job and left in the right way (unlike AOC who can expect boos on his return).
I was sorry to see him go but i dont think many young men with the ambition to play a higher standard of football would of turned down the same chance. I for one will not be booing him but quietly hoping he gets beat.

He was not a free transfer we paid a fee for him. I wish him well, I think he served us well but never thought of him as a premiership player. As for the comments about AOC who can blame a player for wanting to play at the highest level possible. At the time we were still a million miles from where we are now. Bale, Walcott and AOC all took the opportunity to better themselves, who hand on heart would turn down the oportunity of a job which probably quadruplied your salary and allow you to work in a better environment. Fans sem to think that players should show the same loyalty as fans. Why? The chances are they are not playing for the team that they supported as a boy, and even if they are if someone offers them the opportunity to earn a considerable amount of money in what could be a very short career then surely they have every right to consider it. Footballers are one tackle away from ending their career, so why not earn as much as you can when you can.

All clubs poach players, so to be poached goes with the territory. Even with some of our 'homegrown' players they came from other places, e.g. Walcott was from Berkshire and had an association with Swindon, if my memory is correct? Being lower down the 'food chain' is just more frustrating!
As well as the understandable desire to try a big step forward like was presented to AOC, and the "one tackle away from a career end", players are also a few poor perfomances away from being booed, irrespective of their loyalty!

With the situation at the time with Puncheon it left us very weak wide right - remember all the different players trying to play out there without much effect? Personally I believe it cost us the title.
The rumour in the club was very strong that NC offered to match the Arsenal wage offer.
I still think 12m was cheap. Time will tell. I bet Nicola would gladly hand the trasfer fee back right now to have him back. After all are we not trying to build a young exciting team with half of them from the youth academy? If he doesn't fit that mould then I really don't know who does.

His ability to achieve visual elegance on the pitch and his long term wider marketabilty will always be hindered by his fat @rse - a factor which Wenger overlooked.
I know for a fact that the man who takes the Arsenal kit to the laundry was taken aback when Oxo's pants were returned unwashed with a note saying: "We don't do curtains."

Oxlade Chamberlaine misbehaved by going to the press and got fined two weeks wages. The thing that made it worse was the article after article after articel which came out letting us know it was going to happen. It was commented at the time that it was almost as though the Daily Echo were trying to engineer the move. I don't really agree with that (A paper will print what people want to read) but the speculation was a bit overwhelming.
What we paid for him was undisclosed, but he gave us experience where we really needed it in the leagues we were in.
Good luck to Dean Hammond! Your contribution over the past two seasons has been brilliant. Nice to see him leave on a high and for the right reasons!

Im not a fan of booing any players and to a degree if people like Guly, Fox and Puncheon are put on the pitch they can only do there best, if anything it is the managers fault for playing them when out of form, in the wrong position or not getting a replacement in.
as for AOC i have to agree with Seedhouse and Thornhill- the press specualtion was a massive distraction and really took the shine off what we were trying to achieve. He was in our academy since he was eight years old, not for him to give us one season for the seniors in league one and then jog on elsewhere. complete lack on service shown to southampton fc and all the staff that, as we know, 'work ever so hard behind the scenes'. Two seasons later and we are still struggling to find a replacement for him. it makes be laugh hearing all the arsenal fans complain that theo has got no loyalty! loyalty to what...?

Good Luck Deano!! I actually thought he would do well in the prem but that was before we splashed out of £30 million on players. His ability to control the pace of the game and his passing ability will be an asset to any team in the lower leagues. Unfortunately with the new formation meaning we are dropping centre mids and forwards in place of pacey wingers it means a few people are going to be put out of joint.

On the question of emergency loans think that would usually only apply to goalkeepers. If you have a squad of 25 over aged players and as many as you want under the age of 21 then as a premeirship club except for the specialist position of goalkeeper I think it is fair to assume you have enough players. If they are not the right players then that is down to the club.

Red just looks better on the ball..Leeds changed years ago to Real Madrids all white which is also rather fetching....as Liverpool clearly are in decline we simply must become the new reds...and there it is.
We must though fine players two weeks wages everytime they wear bloody dancing class coloured boots, it is simply not on, particularly when the brightest flourescent Brighton boots are nearly always worn by crap players trying to take our eye of their inability.
Adidas black boots with three serrated stripes..there it is again.

Will certainly be welcomed back at SMS, did a great job and left in the right way (unlike AOC who can expect boos on his return).
Talking of booing, i was disgusted that some supporters booed Guly when he came on...great way to motivate the player! I don't rate the guy but we should NEVER boo our own players, no matter what they have done!!

Yesterday posts referred to the new kit "I like it, I like it" as in are are you being served..
We always sing come on you reds when we should as before the war sing come on you stripes..as with Celtic's come on yer hooops..
Pink boots.

ToastyTea wrote: Will certainly be welcomed back at SMS, did a great job and left in the right way (unlike AOC who can expect boos on his return).Dont quite agree with you there. Alex was offered a higher paid job working with other players better than we had at the time, which could only make him a better player. He has not sat on his backside since his move and is selected to play as a first team player. I was sorry to see him go but i dont think many young men with the ambition to play a higher standard of football would of turned down the same chance. I for one will not be booing him but quietly hoping he gets beat.
But if you were his dad, would you have advised differently? Not so sure.
AOC is a brilliant advertisement for the academy. May he do well, everywhere except St Mary's!

One of the best free transfers saints have had in a long time , served the club well both on and off the field but don't think quite premiership quality but will do a good job in the championship with Brighton , AOL had only played in the 1st division before moving to the premiership , playing in the best league in the world, improved wages and playing for a manager with a reputation for getting the best out of young players no brainer really !!! Saints were hardly going to turn down 12 million for an eighteen year old unproven in the top 2 divisions : would like to thing we will not be listening to offers for young Shaw, now we in the premier league . Good luck Deano
Meanwhile: best of luck Deano. The Second Saint to have the nickname, ad a first class Championship player.
Pleased to see him back with his hometown club. That's a solid outcome for an honorary Saint.

Could he handle the step up at theis eary stage and could it ruin him? All said and done I would chuck him in and see how he does.
We have still produced one best examples of a striker (Doble)who can't score goals but still made it to the international scene (no not San Marino) For me this amazing for striker. Still baffles me.

Compare that to the faggots and peas on offer at Brighton and the Aldi burgers at Fratton "Park" ..now park is a rather euphamistic name for a piece of slum wasteland dont you think...indeed Websters defines it as a tranquil, natural setting utilizing the attributes of nature...can you think of anywere less park like..it's a mental blur..sorry that's parklife..
