Southampton pair Nathaniel Clyne and Maya Yoshida set for international action

SAINTS boss Nigel Adkins will be hoping his players come through a series of international games unscathed over the next few days.

Two of the club’s stars are due to be in action today, with defender Maya Yoshida in the Japan squad for the home friendly against UAE and Nathaniel Clyne part of the England Under-21 group that will play a Euro 2013 qualifier in Azerbaijan.

Yoshida also has a 2014 World Cup qualifier at home to Iraq to look forward to next Tuesday, while Clyne has another Euro qualifier, at home to Norway, on Monday.

Record signing Gaston Ramirez is part of the Uruguay squad that will play a pair of World Cup qualifiers, away to Colombia tomorrow and home to Ecuador on Tuesday.

Zambian forward Emmanuel Mayuka is with his national team for their African Cup of Nations qualifier at home to Uganda on Saturday.

Midfielder Steven Davis will feature for Northern Ireland in their World Cup qualifiers, away to Russia tomorrow and home to Luxembourg on Tuesday.

Danny Fox was due to play for Scotland, but is unavailable with a groin strain.

Is Danny Fox's groin strain a real one or an Alex Ferguson type of injury?
One that clears up in time for the next league match.

No disrespect lets hope it's a bad one, forcing Adkins to bring in a lb on loan or give the nipper a chance
Don't wish fox any harm but he needs to step up big time

keep wishing for Cole!

(yes I know its cloud cuckoo land but Cole becoming a free agent just when Saints need a quality defender is dreamland stuff for me)

I am hoping fox's injury is at least a couple of games, would like to see Luke Shaw be given a chance at LB. He can't do much worse could he. Danny's duties at set pieces will have been lifted due to gastons arrival hence he won't be needed. JWP seems to manage very well at this level and it was my understanding 6 months ago that Luke Shaw looks our most promising youngster? I'm sure we won't leak as many goals then, can't imagine the damage theo would cause to Danny at the emirates.

You can't loan in premiership once window is closed but our only hope is to sign a LB who's out of contract

Are any of our boys off to Bestival this weekend? Remember Rob Da Bank offered everyone at the club free tickets if we got promoted? I'd be genuinely interested to know if anyone's taken him up.

Who doesn't love a bit of Stevie Wonder and New Order?

Nasty post.... he is a Saint giving his best and you hope that the injury is a bad one.

Fox in the Championship had most assists of anyone in that league.
I also saw Shaw in Evian and he did not look as good as Fox.
Fox I think tries going forward too much ( a bit like Johnson of Liverpool ). He needs to defend more and go forward when cover is in place. I thinks some of his problems are the 2 centre backs we have are not that mobile to cover him.

That is disrespect, as is said there are no loans available, there is always Ryan Dixon who is still with us, not Premiership obviously but would give his all if asked I have no doubt.

I like Fox - but he must start to defend. So often he is not even close to the winger. However would give Shaw a go - if you are good enough..............

@devonsaint2

Fox did not have the most assists in the league and not even the most at Southampton.

That was Lambert!

Ps. Fox is the reason our Rodriguez has been so negative at Left wing and why our centre backs have to defend so many crosses.

I hope Shaw is introduced whether or not Fox recovers. Many others have commented on Fox's performances which I would agree with.

If Shaw is worse than him, we are in trouble!!!

The time has come to try something different at left back.

Chill out boys it was said tongue in cheek. Of coarse I don't hope it's a bad one,he's a saint
I do suggest he spends some time looking at footage of the likes of Ashley cole etc over the next week or 2,as when he does return he needs to up his game on the defending side

Haha - I can't remember him actually doing anything. Imagine how mental they'll go if he scores.

And were 4.9 bn people REALLY watching the game? I mean, it was a good match and everything but did more than half the population of earth tune in?

St Retford you are clearly underestimating Nicolas plans for world domination. I believe the plan started by getting out of the football league and then signing players from across the globe this then brings the support with it look out Barcelona and Madrid we are coming for you once we've got to grips with beating the likes og Wigan at home ;)

Luke Shaw is a great talent in waiting but he needs to be introduced gradually..Againast Stevenage he looked dodgy defensively.a spell on loan somewhere in the championship or even div 1 would stand him in good stead.

Dickson or Fox, Fox or Dickson...... OMG that is like a choice between Obama and Romney, or maybe a poo and a turd. I would not recall Dickson after he clearly chose the pay check over playing football and was so crass about it.

In the absence of a really talented unsigned left back waiting in the wings I go for Fox, but would like to see Shaw get a few games. I also heard Shaw was dodgy against Stevenage but such a hot prospect should improve with playing time under his belt.

Very rarely do you get a full back who is the complete package, they are generally lacking something. The good attackers are usually ex wingers and the good defenders are usually ex centre backs.

Ashley Cole is regarded as one of the best but he can't win anything in the air and often relies on his pace to get him out of trouble.
I'd personally take a good attacking full back over a good defensive one any day but you do then have to except they will often make errors when defending. Tough choice though I guess!

Agree with you Bpl.

Ashley Cole wouldn't have been able to stop the first 2 Utd goals, last Sunday.

As you say he needs a midfielder in front of him to help block the crosses.

In my opinion, if we line up 433, we should become 451, when we don't have the ball. This would mean the two wide forwards, Lallana & Puncheon, providing the cover for the full backs.

Bottom line though is that if Guly isn't starting, there always has to be (in some fans eyes) a scapegoat.

Looks like it's Fox's turn.

Thornhill Saint says...
8:06pm Thu 6 Sep 12

That is not strictly true. Even (in some fans eyes) if Guly does not start he is still the scapegoat.

We need to get behind the team and as long as Fox wears the shirt we should get behind him..... or maybe slaughter Rodrigues instead for not supporting him!!

Seriously though fair point about scapegoats.

All comments about the United match, seem to mainly concentrate on Fox, Guly and Fonte. While I think Fonte struggled a bit. Remember who they were playing. My personal gripe would be with Mayuka. Considering he was only going to be playing for a very short period. He really didn't put himself about enough. For a young fit man, he should have been all over the defenders like a rash. I certainly hope he puts a bit more effort in, in future, or he will not even make the bench. A lot of posters go on about pace, but work rate is far more important.

Even after Lambert went off and he came on, the team were playing the high long balls to Mayuka like was Lambert. I don't think it was so much to do with work rate as to being thrown in the deep end without a clue to what was going on.
