Shaw could make Premier League debut at Arsenal

Shaw could make Premier League debut at Arsenal Shaw could make Premier League debut at Arsenal

Teenage left back Luke Shaw is on standby to make a dream Premier League debut at Arsenal on Saturday.

The 17-year-old could be handed his first Saints league start at the Emirates with Danny Fox struggling to recover from a groin injury.

Scotland left back Fox has been resting the injury during the latest international break and has had an injection to try and rectify the problem in time for the weekend.

However, there are no guarantees he will be ready to face the Gunners and so Shaw is being prepared to step into the breach.

It would certainly be a baptism of fire for the youngster, who could come up against fellow former Saints academy colleagues Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in North London.

Shaw, who has long been tracked by a number of Premier League clubs and consistently linked with a move to Arsenal since he was 14, has only been brought into the first team squad this season.

He is very highly thought of at Saints but to throw him in for such a big game would be a major test for the youngster.

Shaw made a first start for Saints this season in the Capital One Cup win at Stevenage.

He only has one other senior appearance to his name, that a 13 minutes substitute appearance as Saints drew 1-1 with Millwall in the FA Cup in January.

Saints boss Nigel Adkins was looking to add to the left back department at the club in the summer, having allowed Dan Harding to move to Nottingham Forest.

However, a deal for Alexander Buttner collapsed, Martin Olsson wasn’t snared from Blackburn and nobody else was secured in that position.Saints do still have another experienced senior left back in the shape of Ryan Dickson .

He is part of the official squad list that Saints have submitted to the Premier League but could not be left out as all eligible players have to be registered unless you have more than the 25 man limit.

However, Dickson has not been handed a squad number for this season which shows just how far down the pecking order he has slipped.

The last time Dickson figured for Saints was back in September 2011.

About ****ing time if you ask me!

It goes without saying that our greatest weakness is our defence, 8 goals conceded in 3 games. Yes we played extremely well and two of those teams were the Mancs, but we desperately need to tighte up at the back. Both Fonte and Fox have been found out far too easily for me, there were early signs back in the Championship.

Ward-Prowse has stepped up to the mark so why not Luke Shaw, let the lad show his quality. Also give Jose a break and get the new Japanese lad in at CB, otherwise why did we buy him?

We have no points but are only 3 games into the season but we cant let the gap widen to the point where we'd never close it, Saturday I'll settle for a point against Arsenal or even an ugly win!

Its far too early to panic and its eay to see where our strengths and weaknesses lay, its upto NA to sort things out. And lets not forget he is also on a learning curve, okay it appeared he cocked up the subs but we should ut him some slack. After all he did have a huge part to play i our promotion to the Premier League

Interesting. Not the best game for the boy to make start his Saints career, but if needs be. We do need to solve our defensive problems quickly if we are to maintain our self belief. I doubt Shaw will be the main fix at LB for this season, but I am sure he is a good long term prospect.

Let's hope our Japanese international is ready for Saturday. Fonte is certainly not up to PL standard and I am concerned about Hooiveld. If Kelvin hadn't saved those two pens and we hadn't led against the Mancs x 2 what would we be saying now about Jos?

Two tackles from behind in the in the penalty area in the first three games. You can't do that in the PL. Plenty of room for improvement there. But I'm sure we will turn it around soon I have every confidence we make 12th-ish place come the end of the season.

Spot on.

Jos needs to watch the impulsive tackling at the edge of the penalty area. At this level they are looking to be taken out when they receive the ball just inside the box with their back to the goal. Jos has gifted two penatlies so far and needs to watch it.

It seems to me essential that we get the new signings on the pitch asap. You dont spend that kind of money and then get nervous. Be bold.

Good luck to Luke Shaw. I reckon he will step up and be rock solid. As someone once said, if they are good enough, they are old enough.

Just because he's not Danny Fox it doesn't automatically mean he's going to be better than him. His potential is enormous, by all accounts, but how many of us have seen Luke play or really know anything about him? I'm all for giving youngsters a chance (and so is Nigel given the trust he's put in JWP), but let's not run down Danny in the process - he's learning too and also carries a big threat going forward.

If it turns out Danny's injured then we've got no choice but to play Luke on Saturday, but if he isn't then I trust the management to bring him through at the right time.

Seedhouse the Unrepentant says...

JWP has been picked despite having several midfielders to chose from. He is being picked ahead of them.

Fox was being picked ahead of Shaw and we tried real hard to buy another LB. Maybe Shaw isn't deemed quite ready yet? Obviously I hope he is but don't want to see him played before he's ready and get the confidence knocked out of him.

How has Fox been found out in the Premier League?? Now Im not saying he is a having the time of his life but by no means is he the scapegoat that everyone is making him about to be. out of the 8 goals concede I would say he was at fault for one of them (the nasri assist) at a push you could say uniteds second but as we have adopted zonal defending I would say it was Gulys fault for not getting tighter to his man. As for Yoshida being the answer to all our prayers by being so good we drop Fonte, and Jos up's his game and stops giving pens away all in the space of the one training session they will have before saturday- do me a favour.

Everyone seems to be an expert on this kid on here but I will put money on the fact that 90% of people have never seen him play. Unlike that manager of ours who sees him in training day in and day out and still thinks that fox is a better choice. even to the extent that he wants him to take and injection to his groin to get him on the pitch.

With our wingers pushing forward in the 4-3-3 formation our LB and RB will always suffer and it is up to our CB's to clear any balls into the area which until the last 10 of united they were doing well. I think that arsenal will struggle with our arial ability and i fancy a 2-1 win.

If Shaw does play then good luck to the lad, I think that we will need to put Lallana on the left in order to cover him though. blooding a young defender is very different to a midfielder or striker as any mistake means your opponent is at the last line of your defence and in on goal. Bale being a prime example when he first moved to tottenham.

I don't think I can take any more of Danny Fox and the way he minces around the pitch!

At the end of the day we didn't sign a new LB so I think Adkins is pretty confident in Luke Shaw.

In the last 2 home games Fox was caught ball watching way too many times, and let's be honest his forward play isn't THAT amazing. Considering he can't defend for toffee i'd be more than happy with Shaw getting a game.

Fox gets a lot of criticism but he is good going forward and delivers good crosses. He just seems to get out of position too easily and gets far too central leaving the whole wing exposed which if they have a pacey wide player means he hits the byline unchallenged.

Fox is also quite hard and I think players think twice about bullying one of our youngsters when they know there could be a bit of Danny Fox retaliation. If you're going to play kids you need one or two like him to protect them.

I guess I come from the old-fashioned view that defenders defend and attack when they can, rather than defenders attack and defend if they really have to!

Many can't. I think their job is to get up and down the wing. These days the 'proper' defenders seem to be the centre backs.

not enitrely- but a game of football is as far as the experts lead me to believe won by one team scoring more then they let in, not let offs and near misses, and im saying that a meer 1 of the 8 goals that has led to our three defeats can be pinned on fox.

I think we all need to have a bit of faith in the coaching staff...but doesnt mean i wont add my thoughts from watching on tv as i think im a good coach haha. i think we defend deep as we are not quick enough to deal with balls in behind. Loving the fact we have Clyne and his pace on the right, add the new defender and hopefully we wont park the bus like we do at times at the moment. Fox is getting Caught out with his body positioning and the pace of the inside defender but im sure the coaches can fix this with the new defender hopefully. I think the coaching is amazing from the staff with the players we have and i stole the corner vs man united with my super league team on the weekend and we scored a cracker. I think we will finish top half and i cant wait for ramirez. Have faith Pommies..stop whinging, Losses make the wins more enjoyable. COYR

There is no doubting fox is better going forward than defending and I would not want to curb his attacking play but unlike Clyde or Ashley cole he unfortunately has not got the pace to get himself out of trouble on occasions and so he needs to improve his positional sense for the extra pace of the premiership , reminds me of Ivan Golac when he first came

I played leftback in the wessex league, and even had David Peach say I had a good game a few times.. so I think I know a bit about the position.
For my money a good LB needs to be able to defend first and formost (obviously), positionally support the CB's if they are exposed and work and swap with his fellow left sided players.
So far this season Fox has been caught out positionally and his defending has often been questioniable. Yes, the best form of defence is attack but not when you are 2 goals down and your fullback keeps on getting exposed. That only pulls the CBs out of position, and Fonte cant currently cut it in this league. Give Shaw a chance I say.

As a matter of fact I do, but that's besides the point.

You, sir, are a silly boy. Can I not express my opinion on a open forum? Christ knows you do enough. I believe that Fox has been the biggest defensive liability this season (even taking into account Jos's two penalties and Fonte's dodgy moments) - may I have your permission to say that?

If Shaw is good enough, he’s old enough, the coaching staff will know when that moment is.
Fox is taking a lot of heat at the moment but I believe he is big enough and ugly enough to handle it and improve as a player in the prem.

Are you in the know with Craig Levein? Has he told you personally he rates Fox? Or does he pick him because there isn't really anyone else? Christ, why should people accept your opinion on stuff any more than mine, oh wise one?
can you explain why he is our biggest defensive liability? When amoungst other things Jos has given away two pens, fonte got mugged off against Kone, both failed to pick up van persie late on. Cygne slipped for uniteds first. no-one has been solid and I think what people are getting narked about is that people are pointing the finger at negatives rather then the positives. This could quite easily have been a forum about how good our academy is but instead it has turned into everyone slating Fox.

I think Fox will play this weekend and I would be very suprised if either Walcott or Diaby make an appearance- arsenal have games thick and fast now and i think they will believe at of there games they could do without them in this one! think again!!

Because I dont spout stupid comments like "Fox IS a liability" On that basis, so is the whole of our defence.

He did well for Scotland actually, and has also played well for us. Still, I guess I will have to bow to your superior knowledge and accept that after just 3 games you have written him off.

We've lost three in a row and whilst I am always for encorouging, I also think blindly slapping the whole team on the back just in case their heads go down is wrong.
We are collectively trying to identify where we need to improve and based upon the opening three games if we had not conceaded at key moments we would have won all three (no sht sherlock). So far this season, the players that need to either be improved or replaced are Guly, Fox and Fonte - and I dont think I am sticking my neck out much here.

I think if he bloods Shaw he'll only have Ramirez on the bench with AL taking more responsibility and kjnowing the ropes better than Ramon. He won't play Fox if he's unfit and couple that with the fact that he and NC are probably budgeting null points from this game suggest it's a perfect one for Shaw to try.
Plus Arsenal play football and aren't like Stoke which will suit a 17 yr old defender better.
I'd also like to see Jos partner Yoshida and give Jose a break. In for a penny ...

morning glory,
you are an idiot! you think any saints fan on here cares what drivel you post?
no we dont! but just for you!
you claim that we are `obsessed with body parts` wrong! 1 post out of 50 odd. you though are constantly posting about saints not having any `home town boys` in the squad, well as saints has one of the best academys in the country, no world, kids and their parents want to come here to learn, the best of these then have a chance of playing for the first team,no mater where they have been born, how is that poaching players? and how can you poach anyone who has not signed a contract? i know it must be hard for a skate to comprehend how a decent club works and how the academy system aids in the running of the club by getting in those youngsters, playing the best and then selling if needed for big fees. thats the saints way!
the poopey way, spend huge fees and wages (you cant afford) on over rated players to `win` 1 fa cup! and dont bother investing in the youth or stadium. thats not worked out too well has it? so now you are so much debt that if some one turns up at the training ground with some boots, they might get a game! thats why you have `local home town boys` in your squad! not cause you want to but because you have no choice numbnuts! and as for turds sinking after a while you are right look how far poopey have sunk!

Good luck to the lad.He is certainly well rated by those supposedly in the know.In the last few months i have read articles proclaiming him to be a future Manchester Disunited player and a natural successor to MR Cheryl Cole in the nimber 3 shirt for England. However the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.I rember six seasons or so back the Saints Martin Crainie was being lauded as a future England international but after a life changing career move to a club called portsmouth it has been a bit of a downhill ride for his football career.Arsenal will be no easy game to make a premiership debut.Afterall the gunners are the holders of the prestigious Marcus Lieberman trophy. So i expect that secretly Mr Adkins is regretting letting Dan Harding go to Forest without getting an experienced left back to sign on the dotted line.
In the match against Stevenage Luke Shaw's passing could have been better and whilst he looked good going forward he didn't look the finished article when put under pressure when Stevenage were attacking. As for Danny Fox

Good post! If you go back to last season when we played Reading Fox was guilty of not closing down Jimi Kebe correctly. Stood 2.5 yards off of him. Result two crosses, two goals.

Despite being quite quick he lacks defensive nous and appears to stand off the wide players because he is afraid of getting turned. In this league that is asking for trouble. Give Shaw a go. But even if he is up to it, 17 is very young to expect a player to play for virtually a whole season at this level, especially at full back.

Like I said the other day. The posters on these message boards do have hidden undercurrents ie " reminds me of Ivan Golac when he first came" or "what happens if young Shaw gets done over by the arse" or " "so if we are not bashing guly"...and I've only looked at ten posts or so..
Size of a skunt micro pen1s .... Rozan Kobar!!! Keep looking, you may find other gems to brighten and educate your day. Talking of undercurrents you turd, float on before the tide goes out
Thanks. You have just illustrated my point about obsessing about bodily parts. By the way ; turds all generally sink after a short duration; and I think if you can get some flying carpets in, it would really help out with the teams abysmal defence this year.
Glad to help. Sinking turds and flying carpets, ah yes. Does that mean you are a fan of the Fake Sheik re-taking over the skint scummers at Farton? Anyway, I’m bored of you already as I suspect you are just an attention seeker rather than a footy fan.
See that's your problem. You are bore of me already, and yet I may be able to really give you an alternative view on things as an outsider. I hear this "I am bored" thing quite a bit ; and I fear that this overwhelming quick surge into boredom from your township means that you get bored too quickly with your footy team, thus ensuring that you then turn on the team and continually make the team nervous and then ultimately "also rans". It's only my observation, but I do think I could be onto something here.
morning glory, you are an idiot! you think any saints fan on here cares what drivel you post? no we dont! but just for you! you claim that we are `obsessed with body parts` wrong!
You obviously don't follow football matters. All the homegrown lads were in place well before the administration. Nice to see some passion though. Most fans want an academy and to get rid of the crooks; so as usual for a deck chair you are out of touch with the real Pompey fans. It is a serious point though in't it? Your best young players will keep leaving beacuse they have no real allegiance to the club or the town. That is my point and none of you guys have acknowledged it..

Oh wow! Lets hope NC takes on board your fantastic football knowledge, does he have your mob number? Cos for sure he will be in touch to get you in to replace NA (and maybe the Scottish FA will offer you the managers job) cos both mangers rate Fox. Do you have all of the required coaching badges?
As a matter of fact I do, but that's besides the point.

You, sir, are a silly boy. Can I not express my opinion on a open forum? Christ knows you do enough. I believe that Fox has been the biggest defensive liability this season (even taking into account Jos's two penalties and Fonte's dodgy moments) - may I have your permission to say that?

Are you in the know with Craig Levein? Has he told you personally he rates Fox? Or does he pick him because there isn't really anyone else?

Christ, why should people accept your opinion on stuff any more than mine, oh wise one?
Christ, why should people accept your opinion on stuff any more than mine, oh wise one?

Because I dont spout stupid comments like "Fox IS a liability" On that basis, so is the whole of our defence.

He did well for Scotland actually, and has also played well for us. Still, I guess I will have to bow to your superior knowledge and accept that after just 3 games you have written him off.
Oh jesus, we're talking semantics here. Perhaps I should have worded it "Fox HAS BEEN a liability in the first 3 games" so as not to offend your delicate sensibilities.

I have not written him off, I just meant to express that it is my opinion that he has been the weakest defensive link thusfar in the three premiership games we have played. I just couldn't be bothered to write a long post originally.

Get over yourself.

Perhaps we'll go 3511. Then Fox can play a bit further up the pitch. Playing in a 433 he doesn't have the cover that previous LBs had. Who wouldn't look a great player with Marsden ahead.

no how could i forget those 2 heroes of 76 but i was talking fullbacks.Other heroic scots who took no prisoners were Jimmy Gabriel and Hughie Fisher- the latter being sub at Wembley in 76.What was it that the great Scottish manager Bill Shankley said about the Saints style of football-ALEHOUSE He called it.In those days when mice were men and men were lions every team feared a trip to play against Ted Bates Alehouse brawlers.

you are so wrong! talk about not following football matters!
in the past we had to sell most of our academy players to keep afloat! you see selling players instead of buying keeps a club in the black! especially when you get huge offers for players! though a few players have stayed with the club through loyalty! le tiss, lallana are 2 for you. if however all you care about in football, which is more like a business these days, is loyalty and having hometown players then you will enjoy poopey being in the blue square! just a quick question, how many of the players in the starting line up for your fa cup `win` were from poopey?
i dont care where a player is from, as soon as he puts on the red and white he is a saints player!

morning glory, you are an idiot! you think any saints fan on here cares what drivel you post? no we dont! but just for you! you claim that we are `obsessed with body parts` wrong!
That is my point and none of you guys have acknowledged it..
you are so wrong! talk about not following football matters!
in the past we had to sell most of our academy players to keep afloat! you see selling players instead of buying keeps a club in the black! especially when you get huge offers for players! though a few players have stayed with the club through loyalty! le tiss, lallana are 2 for you. if however all you care about in football, which is more like a business these days, is loyalty and having hometown players then you will enjoy poopey being in the blue square! just a quick question, how many of the players in the starting line up for your fa cup `win` were from poopey?
i dont care where a player is from, as soon as he puts on the red and white he is a saints player!
i do think you need to more out of the 60`s, which being form poopey must be hard!

Sorry, Sainty Saint Saint, but no, you can't write, 'Fox HAS BEEN a liability in the first 3 matches'. Given that those matches have finished and are in the past, you have to use the past simple, which in this case would be, 'was'.

So, you could write, 'Fox WAS a liability in the first 3 matches' or (using the present perfect) 'Fox HAS BEEN a liability this season/since he signed/throughout his career' etc. because none of those have yet finished.

While I do tend to agree with you about Fox, personally, I'd write, 'Fox and Shaw are both Saints players and, while both may be liable to error or be inexperience at this level, I will trust the manager to pick the right team from the players that are available and will trust the players to sweat their collective nuts off for the cause'. :)

Sorry, you're right, I for one should get over myself.

Bring on the Gooners!

Nick Holmes was Southampton born and bred.Mick Channon and Bobby Stokes came through the Youth team. Both Channon and Stokes ended up at Fratton Park as did Paul Gilchrist.Broght a bit of class to the place no doubt.

Nick Holmes was born in Southampton and educated at St. Mary’s College! local enough for you?
Mick Channon was born in Orcheston, Wiltshire and made his debut for Southampton as a 17 year old in 1966, that quite close!
and of course Bobby Stokes was born down the road, and thats quite close as well!
is that good enough for you?

Terry Paine, Winchester
John Sydenham, Southampton
Wayne Bridge, Oliver's Battery
Nathan Dyer, Trowbridge
Drew Surman, Johannesburg .......

......... and Hedge End Rangers, of course.

So, on behalf of all Saints fans and the whole club, may I apologise to Hedge End Rangers for this blatant and despicable act of poaching.

You're doing well, Morning Glory.

After an unfortunate but entertaining first post where you thought that Lallana, Livermore and Sterling were all Saint players, you have managed in a mere three days to become one of the dullest posters ever on this site.

Your desperate attempts to hide the fact that you were from Portsmouth did have a moment or two of slightly pathetic humour (we laughing AT not WITh you) but since then you've been on a downward spiral.

The reason you hear the word "boring" a great deal is because, well, frankly, you're just a little bit tedious, old chap.

Let's hope the dressing room attitude is win as a team lose as a team and they do not single out individual players mistakes like we all do on here . Hopefully we can go to the arsenal get something from the game to kick start our season and give the fantastic club and fantastic supporters something positive to talk about on here . Coyr

dont even try to compare the fews site to this site! go back to the fews and look at the posters names. scumstomper, scumhater, wheres liebherr to name a few. now look at the names on this site, they are mostly fun names or saint..... or where people are. says it all about the mentality of the two sets of fans, we are concerned about the saints as are your lot!
oh yes the banter on your site is better is it???
a poopey fan is more than welcome to post on this site, and for the most part they do not get abuse (just a bit of teasing), they (you) just get FACTS shoved back down your hate filled faces!
if a saints fans posts on the fews site he will get all sorts of abuse! some of our fans offered to go to the cowshed to help the "pack the park" campaign (what a success that was/is), they were told if they did they would have their heads kicked in! as i said sums your bestest ever best bestest fans ever in the world (tm) up dosent it! vile hate filled animals who hate us more than they like their own team! your envy of saints is clear to see in your posts! keep posting though as i enjoy a good laugh and it saves me reading the fews! funniest thing i ever saw was "appy(voldemort) is the best young manager in England!" oh how i laughed and laughed, didnt stop for days, even now it gives me such a chuckle.

More glory. you don't really do facts do you ?
No locals in the team?
OK , not exactly from the road outside the ground.
The point we make about our youth scheme is that we do encourage young players to come here and improve.
This point is proved by the heading of this particular article, we are hoping to bring a very good left back through from our youth team and give him a game in the premiership.
When PFC were in the Prem they bought wholesale, we have purchased for the positions that we need better players in. We have a young left back. a centre back and another out on loan to gain experience.
On the News site your manager has publicly said that he doesn't have enough good players and needs to borrow money to get some more players, not a good idea with the current situation resulting from borrowing money.
You are more than welcome to post on here, please do make sure that what you say is true though,
The News site is somewhere that I also post, I post sensible comments and observations and some of the responses I get are similar, but most are just knuckle draggers making ugly noises . I must presume that jealousy is making them irate.
Alternatively you could just join up with Pompey Phil who posts garbage and insult and thinks it is witty. It ain't!

More glory. you don't really do facts do you ? You are more than welcome to post on here, please do make sure that what you say is true though, The News site is somewhere that I also post, I post sensible comments and observations and some of the responses I get are similar, but most are just knuckle draggers making ugly noises . I must presume that jealousy is making them irate. Alternatively you could just join up with Pompey Phil who posts garbage and insult and thinks it is witty. It ain't!
you see its happend again. a skate hit with facts has gone away!
for those who say ignore a skate and it will go away, i say NO, hit it with facts and they dont know what to do! they throw the word fact around as if they know what it means, however they dont really understand it, look at morning glory and his "we have local hometown players you dont " facts, when informed that they are only playing for skate because they are skint he changed subject, when challenged over poopeys hometown policy when they brought the cup he admited they had none but he then went on to make that assumption with our 76 team (little bit of research would of helped him there) 2 players were quite close and 1 from Southampton.
hit them with facts and they go away, they cant handle the truth!

No - you know a bit about how left backs played in YOUR day. Its a differeng game now. Left backs are largely wing backs and are used to get the ball up and down the pitch and put in crosses. Hence Fox rated highly in 'assists' last season. They are expected to track back (as are Punch and J Rod when the wing back is overlapping) but the defence largely conmes from Fonte and Jos. Notice also that those tracknig back will always come on the inside forcing the cross which is arguably something we are more capable of defending.

Fox is OK although he and J Rod still need to develop a better understanding as Punch and clyne have done already.

agreed
That is my point and none of you guys have acknowledged it..
you are so wrong! talk about not following football matters! in the past we had to sell most of our academy players to keep afloat! you see selling players instead of buying keeps a club in the black! especially when you get huge offers for players! though a few players have stayed with the club through loyalty! le tiss, lallana are 2 for you. if however all you care about in football, which is more like a business these days, is loyalty and having hometown players then you will enjoy poopey being in the blue square! just a quick question, how many of the players in the starting line up for your fa cup `win` were from poopey? i dont care where a player is from, as soon as he puts on the red and white he is a saints player! i do think you need to more out of the 60`s, which being form poopey must be hard!
...Not wrong about the majority of decks incorrect assumption that Pompey fans don't want a well run club. Le Tiss was just too scared to go to a bigger club...He should have gone to Chelsea but didn't..I fear Lallana will go at the end of this season, and your club will probably get a good whack for him..More out of the sixties? you mean move on? Pompey has been developing youngsters for a while now, and that is good for progress - quite right..no local lads for the FA win..but we are now improving on that...As a matter of interest how many local lads were in your 76 team?
Another Bitter is called Pompey Royal, they used to put lemonade or other hand(y) shandy ingredients in it- it then became known locally as 'Pipe Dream' or 'Pompey Top'
Not surprising and nearly Quite Interesting.
