Adkins still on the hunt for new faces
12:00pm Friday 14th September 2012 in Saints News
Nigel Adkins
NIGEL Adkins has not ruled out bringing even more new faces into St Mary’s.
Premier League clubs are allowed to acquire free agents following the closure of the summer transfer window.
“What we’ve got to do is quickly get the players we’ve got to become a group,” he said.
“There was mass speculation on the transfer window shutting and then it shuts and within a few hours the phone is going again.
“(People say) ‘Oh, this player is now a free agent, do you want him?’ - this, that and the other.
“It is never-ending.
“The important thing is you can’t underestimate the value of team spirit.
“Winning teams have great team spirit but, likewise, you’ve got to keep improving all the time.”

Sorry, but where in that does it say Adkins wants to bring in any more players. Can't see us panic buying to be honest. Think we'll go with what we have until January, the players that got us there deserve a chance, and lets not forget that we have played Man Utd and Man City!
Top teams play an open style because they know they have the best players and can always pull it out of the bag when they are in trouble. That suits Saints and we play well against that style of play because we play in a similar way, but with lesser players.
The middle of the road teams won't be as open as the top teams and we will find it harder to score against them.
So we need to solve our defensive problems ASAP. Or we could be in trouble. It is not a given we will start to pick up points immediately after the Arsenal game just because all of our new signings will be available. They won't improve the defence.

I don't think there will be panic buying though. Remember, anyone who is free now must be in that position for a reason.
If only we could find a seasoned pro looking to do a good job in his final couple of seasons. .. Yes I know .. dream on.
What I would like to see is Fonte being mentored by someone who can bring him up a level. I think he has it in him. Apart from the occasional error I thought he was pretty solid over the last two years, he is now up agaisnt the worlds best and it takes time to adapt.
Fox is different, I am not sure if he is just finding his feet at a higher level or whether he will learn from experience. We don't have a lot of time to find out but he must not become a whipping boy as he has done us proud. His service to Lambert has been first rate in the not too distant past.
This article does not have much substance other than to say that Adkins phone is till working and that team spirit is important. Whooa stop the front page!

Ok, so you want to play reverse psychology as a visiting Skunt.
So Walsall this weekend. Another honest team turning up to Farton with their squad on long term contracts to keep their club in the BLACK. Who have you signed on the sympathy vote from the football league this month? The country is feeling uncomfortable about how far you scummers can push the integrity of your opponents.
Rangers are a team 20 times the size of you, follow their lead and do the honourable thing.
You never know, The Footy fans of Britain might start to stop hating you so much

The week after we gained promotion I went through the squad and thought we needed 9 new players to stay away from the relegation zone. That was to include a back 4 and cover for Kelvin Davies. I think we are still 3 short. I have watched at least 2 PL matches on TV for the past 7 years, that's what I based my 9 players on.

Well done to the U21s beating the Toon 1-0. It's fantastic to have a real development system in place at SFC..
Glad Jack Cork came through the 90mins well. It will be good to get him back challenging for a place in the firsts.
Looking forward to beating Arsin's ArseNil 3-0 and having him sacked on Monday - That's worth a good punt!!

I think his back room staff are a bit naive at premiership level too. Now maybe if dean wilkins metamorphosised into RAY WILKINS Saints might get a bit of premiership savy in the coaching ranks.
What Southampton team would i pick against Arsenal well i've won a few quid over the years at fantasy football from both national and local newspapers so here goes with my fantasy team to beat the gunners.
PETER SHILTON,ALF RAMSEY,IVAN GOLAC,STEVE WILLIAMS,DAVE WATSON,CLIFF HUXFORD,TERRY PAINE,MICK CHANNON,RON DAVIES,MATT LE TISSIER,ALAN BALL..as for the subs well back in my day there was no such animal if you weren't good enough or fit enough you shouldn't have started the match. oh by the way modesty did not permit me to pick the great CB FRY.in todays starting xi
Getting back to reality and Nigel's quest for new faces how about HARRY KEWELL the aussie who is out of contract.OK his best days are behind him but he would help the shirt sales down under and that seems to be an important strategy in NC'S masterplan to rule the soccer universe.
One last point about the problematic left back berth.why wasn't Wayne Bridge lured back to ST MARYS in pre-season.he has the neccessary top flight experience which our back 4 seem to lack and he can bang in the odd goal.he has already scored a couple for the seagulls who are sitting pretty at the top of the championship as i type this dismal dirge.
