Saints hopeful of avoiding worst ever start to season

SAINTS must steer clear of defeat against Aston Villa this weekend if they are to avoid equalling their worst ever start to a season.

Nigel Adkins ’ side have lost their opening four matches of the Premier League campaign, and on Saturday will be bidding to avoid a fifth straight beating.

Since joining the Football League in 1920, only once have they ever opened up with five consecutive losses – in the 1998/99 season.

Back then, with Dave Jones as manager, Saints recovered to finish 17th and celebrate another “Great Escape”.

Francis Benali was a member of that team, and is confident the current squad will also overcome their frustrating start.

“We were traditionally fairly slow starters,” he said. “It’s disappointing when you’re not getting results and early points on the board, but by no means is it the end.

“You have got to maintain that mental toughness, resilience and belief in yourselves.

“There was a tag line we used to use, which was ‘the spirit of Southampton ’, which included the fans and everyone who pulled behind the team. “I honestly believe that support we had helped keep us up on those occasions.

“It has been evident the past few seasons the spirit that the current team have got.

“It’s a new test for them now, and they will have to show their resilience, mental toughness and strength.

“I have every confidence they will do that and will turn things round.

“I have seen a lot already this season that is very encouraging and they will be more than fine to hold their own in the Premier League .”

Saints’ first five games in 1998/99 were considerably less daunting than the fixtures Nigel Adkins’ men have had to endure.

Liverpool, Charlton, Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Newcastle were the club’s conquerors back then.

This term, Saints have suffered defeats to Manchester City, Wigan, Manchester United and Arsenal.

The club are no strangers to bad starts, though, and if anything have become specialists at overcoming them.

Four times since 1920 they have begun campaigns with four straight defeats, and they have never once been relegated in those seasons.

As well as the 1998/99 Premier League campaign, they also started with four losses in 1925/26, 1927/28 and 1938/39 – all in the old division two.

And those aren’t the only nightmare openings.

In 1993/94, Saints lost eight of their first nine matches, but recovered to finish 18th in the 22-team Premier League.

Even more amazingly, they stayed up in 1969/70 despite winning just two of their opening 25 top-flight matches.

The Arsenal defeat was bad, but Arsenal were very good. Better than the 2 Manchester clubs on the day by far.
We need more speed / agility in the middle of the defence.
Hooiveld & Yoshida or even Cork might be the answer.

However we do not want a final decider again...well unless we win it and stay up!

Depends how you look at it. You can read it as us having a solid track record of dramatic improvement after very poor starts. Which is positive!

What it doesn't say is we are are a richer club now with money to spend and Saturday will be the first time we will be able to field our maximum strength team.

Yes no doubt we all agree (including the chairman, manager, players and fans alike) that we want 'results'.

In all walks of life when things don't go according to plan, there will always be someone to proportion the blame onto someone else.

Personally speaking I reckon that NA, since he 'took over the reigns' has done a great job and I think many will agree.

But at the end of the day it is all about results and if NC considers that Nigel is not getting the best out of his squad of players then sure enough he will replace him.

Don't know as yet if it is any coincidence or not, but heard from someone that Gordon Strachan was at St.Mary's last week.

Reasons why Nigel should be worrying about nothing other than Saturday's game:

1) When Nicola sacked Pardew it was made clear in a statement that the board was well-aware that frequent manager changes are damaging to a football club. The Pardew decision, I think we were all aware, was not about football and therefore gives no indication of how willing Nicola is to axe a manager if results are sluggish.

2) Nicola spent half the summer personally trying to sign Gaston Ramirez, who accounted for about half our total spending. He'll be more aware than anyone that until Ramirez is starting in the team and on the same page as his teammates that Saints will be a work in progress.

3) Nicola believes in signing talent which is on its way up. Is there a young(ish) manager on a sharper career trajectory anywhere in the English game than Nigel?

4) Nigel has given a positive atmosphere to the whole club which you cannot put a price tag on. Without Nigel that buoyancy disappears at a stroke.

5) Nicola comes from a business culture very different to ours; one in which long term progression and financial security are the important things. A bad start or a run of losses does, in the scheme of things, mean very little.

6) Nicola is a football fan who wants us to play with a certain style. Nigel is delivering there.

7) Nigel has a long term contract. Nicola wouldn't have given him that if he didn't believe in him.

So quit yo' jibber jabber and support the man and the team.

Absolutely spot on !! Too many negative comments and moaners amongst so called supporters ? NA has delivered us back to back promotions and restored our pride in our club. NC has stabilised the club invested in the infrastructure, continued the work ML started and let's not forget we spent 33 million in the transfer window .
2 years ago I watched us play out a 0-0 draw at Hartlepool in a midweek fixture, we have just played 3 of the biggest clubs in the country and spent
12 million pound on a player, we have come along way

We could do with a scrapper like Franny Benali in the team today.Dave Jones was a good manager for Saints and got the rough end of the pineapple from that public school twerp Rupert Lowe.
His Sheffield Wednesday team should give us a good runout in the League Cup.Whatever the XI we put out we should beat them but Villa on Saturday will be no roll over.Remember the Wigan match. We were going to do all sorts of things to them and ended up with egg on our Mushes.I think we will beat Villa.Even a draw will be a step in the right direction but i fear another defeat will be disastrous not so much for the club and the players but for Nigel Adkins.Come on you SAINTS you owe your boss man a good result.

Heh - I know I shouldn't but I do really like Michael Appleton. He's got this blind loyalty to Pompey that makes him seem like some great big puppy dog who sticks by its owners despite the fact they live in a caravan and feed him crisps for tea. It's quite endearing, really.

I don't think any of the above posts are negative. We're not going to agree on everything.

Some fans want to talk about what will happen to Adkins if we lose, and other fans are super positive and can't see anything but 3 points for the mighty Saints this Saturday.

I personally think Adkins has until the West Ham game to turn things around. Whatever happens against Villa I think he will be ok, for now.

Obviously I will be supporting the team and manager 100%, because just like eveyone else I want to see Saints challenging for Europe just like Nige said before the season kicked off.

Where there is Poopey there is also Saints.
Where there is John Terry there is also Fabrice Muamba.

On this theme I have been Yanged up all week knowing that I will be seeing Del Piero in the A-League this season.
Alas, I have just been slapped by a large dose of Yin, that old Villa lump of lard Emile Heskey has just joined Newcastle Jets.

Balance is restored.

2 years ago I watched us play out a 0-0 draw at Hartlepool in a midweek fixture, we have just played 3 of the biggest clubs in the country and spent 12 million pound on a player, we have come along way
"Negative comments" don't make those of us who are fearful for Nige's future "so-called" supporters. We are supporters, full stop.

Retford makes good points here and they make a lot of sense to me. I hope he's right. I still imagine we'll end up with Mark Hughes in time to panic buy through the January transfer window if things don't start turning around from Villa onwards.

The false war is over, the real war now starts.

So quit yo' jibber jabber and support the man and the team.[/p]
Absolutely spot on !! Too many negative comments and moaners amongst so called supporters ? NA has delivered us back to back promotions and restored our pride in our club. NC has stabilised the club invested in the infrastructure, continued the work ML started and let's not forget we spent 33 million in the transfer window . 2 years ago I watched us play out a 0-0 draw at Hartlepool in a midweek fixture, we have just played 3 of the biggest clubs in the country and spent 12 million pound on a player, we have come along way[/p]
Coyr. City Saint

Let's be honest, few of us really expected any points from those three ultra-tough games against Citeh, Manure and Arsenil. Though instead of three respectable defeats, we got two sensational near-wins and one absolute hammering! The only result that has really hurt us so far is Wigan. So, we are "only" three points behind schedule, but morale is suffering. That makes two things absolutely essential on Saturday against a side that only narrowly escaped relegation last season:

THREE points - even a draw would be a disaster.

A full stadium, to show NC, NA and the players that we are right behind them. And I mean FULL - every single seat taken, no empty spaces to signal a downturn in attendances and bring the WUMs on here to burble about "empty seats" again.

Odd that. Within the past couple of weeks you posted: " I wish I was joking but two promotions in consecutive seasons is a great achievement by any standard, not even the great Ted Bates or LMcM achieved that. Losing NA would be a catastrophe" Will the real Walter K please step forward?

Saints history shows that instead of dumping manager after manager, we should have dumped the Chairman Rupert Lowe years before we did. Had we done that, we would probably not have been relegated from the Premiership.
NC is at the helm and has all the clout, NA is a very good coach but with no clout when it comes to spending the Company's money.
NC had about 5 months to recognise, what most of Saints supporters had already recognised, that we needed to sign a Premiership class goalkeeper and two defenders,he didn't.
Failing to plan is planning to fail and that is exactly what NC has done.
His arrogance will prevent him from doing the decent thing and resigning, NA will be the sacrificial lamb, which will be travesty..
Until NC replaces the numpty over the hill KD and signs two experienced defenders Saints will languish at the bottom of the league.
It may already be too late ! --- what is the precedent ? --- no team has lost its first 3 games and survived in the Premiership well, thanks to tightwad, blinkered NC, Saints have lost their first 4!!
Writing's on the wall I'm afraid, miracles do happen but the last one was 2,000 years ago in JC's time -- let's all pray, with NC at the helm it's our only hope!
