Adkins hails Ramirez and Lambert

Daily Echo: Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

Nigel Adkins described Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez as “mouthwatering” after the sensational 4-1 win against Aston Villa.

Adkins said: “Rickie and Gaston was a mouthwatering combination. Gaston’s been outstanding since he’s joined us. You could see the players eyes light up at his first training session.

“He’ll run back and chase, he can link up play, he has great movement and is a joy to watch. Rickie gave their centre halves all sorts of problems, we excited out supporters and Maya Yoshida had an outstanding game against the two physical presences that Villa had up front. He was calm and collected all afternoon.

“We showed great character in the second half, we put in a really good performance. Everyone has seen we want to pass the ball. We created opportunities and took opportunities we created.”

Ramirez looked a little nervous for the first half hour, then calmed down, warmed up and played superb football for the rest of the game.

If this is him after a week with the rest of the team, I simply can't wait to see how he progresses in gelling with the team.

Saints started really well for 20 mins,we were controling the game untill we started to give the ball away. This resulted in Saints conceding a goal.Saints were all at sea untill half time.
What a transformation after half time,Nigel must have really got into them.
Fox did not return Clyne took his place with Richardson at right back.
Masterstroke on Nigel's part, total change about Saints game.
It is nice to give NA a compliment for his reshuffle.
Rickie was immence.Gaston Ramires was sensational, what a buy!
Great performance OH how so good it is to have a win again.

But boy do I feel happier to-night

I thought Yoshida was solid apart from one mistake Although he did't win everything in the air he never gave anyone a free header

Ramirez has the eye and the ability to make the crucial pass and his work rate was excellent

Mayuke? looks like a positive impact sub

All that said our home grown Llannna was MotM for me

I thought our defence looked stronger today. Yoshida is solid and Fonte seems to be stepping up his game since the competition for places has been introduced.

I also thought that Clyne at left back with Richardson on the right worked well. Maybe a new defensive set up?

You have had a hellava start to the season in the teams you played now a win has come, since he left us we have been in decline, but he got us where we should not have been and for a while we lived the dream. We need stability now and I watched our game against Colchester where we ground out a much needed win and listened to local commentary on radio/MP3 as well and cheered every goal at St Marys after the first!!. Give him a chance, he is the BEST you can get up the IRON!! ( and the Saints). As he used to say up here KEEP THE FAITH!!!!!!.

First Prem win. a good time to praise the team and reflect on the absolute load of rubbish the wums and nervous negatives said and spread last week. Get over it and support the whole team under Nicola and Nigel - together we are Southampton.

Special note: I loved that Nigel acknowledged the professionalism of Kelvin Davis when told on Thursday that Gazza was to start Kelv immediately supported the young man. That takes a real man with real heart. A lot of the negative slag at the drop of a hat fans need to heed that lesson including the shiit stirring media.

Great performance today from the Saints. While Lambert, Lallana, and Ramirez were awesome, Davis had a great game in midfield. I can't pick one player (other than maybe Fox) who had a bad game. The most pleasing aspect for me today though was our defence. With Yoshida alongside Fonte, we looked solid. It seemed if they had been playing together for ages, and Fonte certainly seemed more composed than in recent games. Yoshida looks like a great signing, with raw pace, and so comfortable on the ball... As for Ramirez... he was different class.

Brilliant piece of management by NA today. Much has been said about Gazza playing in place of KD and the debuts of Ramirez and Yoshida. However, bringing Rhichardson and moving Clyne to left-back at half time was genius! We finally caught a glimpse of what he can do going forward, whilst remaining solid at the back. To those who doubted NA's ablities, does the humble pie tase nice?

I did say last week that Ramirez looked class with his movement and ability on the ball, so happy we signed him. He and Sir Rickie were a cut above anyone else on the pitch, that includes Lallana. Talking of Lallana, I wish he would just deliver an early cross or take an early shot when he has the chance rather than trying to beat the same player ten times before doing it.

Gazza seems a bit slow and reluctant to get off his line, but generally looked comfortable, but he didn't have to do. Good to see we got Boruc, we were a bit light in GK department.

I thought the whole team played well, except Fox who seemed to be having a 'mare. His replacement, Richardson showed why he was a regular last season, and should be allowed to keep that spot!

They responded in the best possible way, belief in their abilities and the teams future. It's amazing to think there were 5 new faces out there yesterday and they all started to gel. Clyne is becoming a stand out full back, he seemed to enjoy the switch to left back, he reminded me of Ashley Cole. Yoshida is finding his feet but his confidence is growing, he's my tip for the top! Gazznigga looked comfortable, and has a lot to learn, but he looks willing to learn and seems to be a bit of a character. Fonte seems to be returning to his commanding best, which is great news as we all know what he can do. Davis and Schneiderlin work their socks off, breaking down play and distributing the ball well. I'm glad we kept Puncheon his willingness to run at defenders and go past them is vital for us, Adam although amazing has stepped it up, It looks like he enjoys turning Prem defenders inside out, maybe a bit too much as he goes back to do it again, my only complaint about a future England star. Ramirez is already looking worth every penny of his £12m, what I like about him most and most surprisingly is how strong he is, he wants that ball and nobody is taking it from him! Plus the way he glides past players is beautiful to watch, let's see how he copes with cold wet and windy games! Rickie's game will come as no surprise to us faithful, he's just doing what he does week in week out, dominating defenders, holding the ball up, feeding sweet passes, and scoring plenty of goals. But I do hate the comparisons with Grant Holt, please, he's way better. We all know with smug satisfaction that he'll be among the top scorers again this season.

Adkins out? no chance, my biggest fear is Adkins for England!

I know it's only one win, and I'm not wearing rose tinted glasses, but I predicted before the season started that we'd be top ten, our play so far has not altered my opinion merely confirmed it. I actually predicted the scoreline yesterday, with odds of 50-1 a good gamble.

Thank you. The brighter of the Saints fans are aware that the biggest challenge this club will have over the months and years to come will be keeping hold of Nigel. One day he'll be at Liverpool or England and after all he's done for us we have no right to do anything other than what the gracious Scunthorpe fans did and say "Thanks and all the best," but with any luck we'll get another five years from him.

In the meantime, just enjoy him because, right now, we're stood on gold.

Then I could see just how fantastic Sir Rickie was as he was involved in all 4 goals. The commentators didn't have a good word to say about Saints at all and were truly negative even at the final whistle. Yet on MOTD even saggy chops was full of praise. I think we have the makings of a fantastic team and the new guys haven't had much time to gel yet. I am really excited even though a bit nervous.

COYR!
I also am becoming bored with the comparisons with Holt.
Rickie Lambert is on a higher plain than Holt.
Holt can hold up the ball he can run at players and head.
Yes, he,s good.
Rickie is better because he can do all these things but more importantly his ball skills and awareness is second to none.

Yesterday we saw comparisons of an existing England centreforward(Bent) and the future one.
Bent is all huff puff elbows and headers.
Rickie is quality in the air and the ground and exquisite passing.
Although Adam Lallana was called up for England last time I think Rickie will play for them first.

brilliant take back any criticisms. Still light in CB position but much better. Lambert much more complete player than Grant Holt. Puncheon is like a new signing. Nervous about Everton next week. They knew Swansea pass the ball well and strike well just like us so they pushed up the field. Our defence really need to be at their best next week against cheating Fellani. In NA and NC we trust, truly beautiful football from the saints.

The Japanese commentary team are in love with us. They hardly talked about Villa.
All the commentators made a point about Nigel being cheered towards the end of the match. Much more significantly, he was cheered at the beginning.

Having been at the match, then watching it on Football First and then on Match of the Day - all recorded to be watched yet again today - our first three Prem points feels like the arrival of a very bouncy baby after four weeks anxiously pacing the hospital corridor.

And to top it all, the Skunts must feel that PFC is our baby's nappy.

What a great day and sounds like yours was even better with a 50-1 win!!
About 15 of us got an early train down from London to go over to the Nelson in Hythe and raise a glass or 4 in memory of our old mate Clydie. He would have loved it.
Ramirez looked superb when he settled down in the second half. Gazza looked ok in goal. I love Kelvin but we do need competition in all positions, even more so now we've signed the Pole. Yoshi looked solid at the back and I think with one really class centre back either Jose or Jos will look a lot better. On this form Sir Rickie must get a chance with England, on yesterday's performance who would you think was the England player Bent or Sir Rick? and we've still got Tad Lee to come! Happy days and can't wait to get on that train to Liverpool next week.
As my old mate would have said - NICE ONE CLYDIE

Great day yesterday - thought Yoshida looked calm and composed (the opposite of Jos in recent games) and that impacted on Fonte as well.
Fox unfortunately continued his poor form this season and things really changed when Richardson came on and Clyne went to left-back, pushing Villa back with his bombing on.
Midfield did well and Morgan is maturing into a great player who can tackle now as well...Ads played well but not at his best and Punch did his usual hot-and-cold, but came good.
Up top, I'm not sure I could love Rickie anymore - he should be in the England squad (I think he will be in the next one) and agree with people on hear in that the comparisons with Hoult are an injustice to him - and pretty lazy.
Ramirez...can't believe we've got this lad as he is going to be a great 'baller. Throw in Mayuka, who looks like he could come good, Corky to come back and a new keeper with Champ League and international experience and I reckon we could get a point at Everton and will be a real game for anyone at home.
Great day out in the sun. Lots more to come (without the sun).

Great to hear. Saints could build a big fan base in Japanand have tw quality prem players for the bargain, by playing tad and Yoshi often. A globalized fan base is another cornerstone in the wall for fortress stmarys.

It's great seeing so many japanese fans at he matches as well. I haven't seen any abuse directed their way, which proves again that we are a better class of club than many.

Adam reminds me of how my son used to be. Great feet and skill but awareness of his own lack of genuine pace sometimes manifests itself in perhaps too much twisting and turning and lack of confidence to drive past the player jockeying. That can make it look as if he is trying to beat the same player twice when really Adam is just looking for space or a telling pass. The important thing is that he doesn't lose the ball. Adam is a great talent and his confidence will only grow in the premiership.

great performnce saints. i watched the game here in florida, so proud of our team and fans.it may be our 1st win but what a way to get it.staying in the prem will be a great achievement, there are no easy games and as we have found out already it seems nearly every defensive mistake has been punished with a goal.so onwards and upwards you mighty saints. on another point i find it hilarious that the fish heads down the road have been posting and gloating over saints poor start to the season , hopefully the 4-1 scoreline will encourage them to go back under the rock they swam out from. just incase there not sure about their own decline. i will remind them that the only league game they have won this season was against the mighty crawley with 9 men. saints are light years ahead of the skunts both on and off the field. red aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Good point Cpt, although I still wish he would shoot sooner when he has the opportunity.

Great to have Gaston as well as Adam to provide the creative spark to our forward play, for too long it's been all down to Adam and as a result we've missed badly him when he's been out injured.
