Southampton slump to 3-1 defeat at Everton

GASTON RAMIREZ GASTON RAMIREZ

Gaston Ramirez ’s first Saints goal was not enough to save his side from defeat as they leaked three goals in 13 first half minutes to lose 3-1 at Everton.

Saints started the game brightly and sniffed an away day victory as Ramirez was left unmarked from a corner to head home from close range to give them the lead after just six minutes.

But Everton responded and in a rampant spell bagged goals through Leon Osman and a Nikica Jelavic double to bag the three points at Goodison Park.

Everton proved their threat early on as Leighton Baines whipped in a cross that Maya Yoshida was able to win in the air only for the ball to fall to Kevin Mirallas just inside the area, but he lashed a shot over the bar.

However, it was Saints who took the lead after six minutes through the simplest of routes.

Adam Lallana whipped in an inswinging corner, Gaston Ramirez lost his marker, Tim Howard got lost under the ball and the Uruguayan had the simple job of heading home in acres of space just a few yards out at the far post.

Everton claimed it should never have been a corner in the first place and the ball had in fact been put out by Rickie Lambert .

Saints allowed John Heitinga a free header from a corner four minutes later but the Everton centre half was backing away from the ball and his weak header was easily fielded by Paulo Gazzainga.

Jay Rodriguez had a great chance to double Saints’ lead on 12 minutes as he outpaced Heitinga to get in behind via a long ball up field. He superbly nodded the ball into his path to give himself the chance to finish low across Howard from inside the area but scuffed his effort wide of the far post.

As the game wore on both sides posed a real threat with Everton piling consistent pressure on Saints, who in turn looked razor sharp on the break.

But it was the Toffees who claimed the next goal to equalise on 25 minutes.

Some patient passing build-up ended with Kevin Mirallas crossing from the right, the ball deflecting back off of the sliding Nikica Jelavic and sitting up nicely for Leon Osman who side footed home into the top corner for 1-1.

And it got worse for Saints as Everton took the lead eight minutes later. Mirallas played the ball through into the path of Jelavic with the Saints defence dissected.

The striker’s first touch took him a little wide but he finished low across Gazzniga, who looked somewhat out of position in trying to cover his near post.

The Saints keeper certainly wasn’t out of position on 37 minutes as he turned away a Jelavic top corner bound header.

However, he was beaten again just a minute later.

Seamus Coleman burst through down the right, leaving two Saints players trailing in his wake, and whipped in a deep cross.

Jelavic was there to meet the ball and though Gazzaniga dived towards his near post to get both hands on the Everton man’s far post header he couldn’t stop it going in.

Everton were tearing Saints apart at will and Marouane Fellaini was the next to get a header on target, but it was straight at Gazzaniga.

In first half stoppage time Fellaini was left unmarked from a corner and slammed his header against the crossbar.

The whistle went shortly afterwards and a shell shocked Saints trudged off to try and regroup.

They had started so well but were then totally ripped to shreds and could only be grateful to be just two goals down at the break.

There was a noticeable change from both sides at the start of the second half.

Saints were trying to secure the flanks that had been so leaky in the first period, while Everton were dropping deeper and allowing Saints possession, perhaps feeling they had almost done enough to win the game already.

Everton still posed a very real threat though and Fellaini’s deflected shot went just narrowly wide.

Moments later Osman’s steered shot from outside the area went agonisingly close to creeping into the far corner.

Fellaini was on target on 61 minutes from inside the area but this time it was straight at Gazzaniga.

Saints did start to get a bit more of the game but were struggling to deliver a final ball to create a genuine chance.

It wasn’t the same problem for Everton and Mirallas was the next to prove that with a shot from outside the area that Gazzaniga dived low to his right to turn wide.

Ramirez took aim from fully 25 yards at the other end but only picked out Howard in the centre of the Everton goal.

He probably should have pulled one back on 69 minutes as Lambert put him in behind but Ramirez lifted the ball across Howard and wide of the far post.

Everton made their first change on 75 minutes with Victor Anichebe replacing Jelavic up front.

They followed it up four minutes later with Bryan Oviedo coming on for Mirallas.

Saints made a double switch of their own with ten minutes remaining with Emmanuel Mayuka and Ben Reeves replacing Rodriguez and Clyne.

The second half had been something on a non event with Everton showing little attacking intent.

But Saints knew if they could just fashion a chance and bag themselves a goal then they might yet be able to rescue something from the match.

Ramirez tried to conjure something up with a shot from just outside the area but fired over the bar.

Lambert was the next to have a go with a header from Steven Davis ’ right wing cross but Howard beat it away.

Both sides made their final changes in the dying moments as Richard Chaplow replaced Adam Lallana for Saints and Sylvain Distin came on for Osman for Everton.

However, it was too late for them to make any impact as the game finished 3-1 thanks to Everton’s rampant first half spell.

How many tams are going to score at Goodison let alone come away with any points this season give how well they are playing? This was a lesson from a very good Prem League club.

There are still a lot of positives but work on defence needs done. We are striggling at full back and cant let a centre half run out of defence...

But one thing.. where was their crowd? Th Oldham fans made more noise and we had put 6 past them.. thought they were pathetic..

Thought we would be more aware in this league than we seem to be at the moment. Was not at the game but listen on the airwaves and it was mention long before they scored that we were allowing them to much space down the wings. This proved our undoing in just 13 minutes out of the whole 90.

I am not a master tactition but we got caught playing the Diamond in a few away games last season. Yes we do create chances playing this way but we have to take them when they present themselves. I noticed they excepted the chances we presented to them. The score could of quite easy have been 3-3 with chances.

We must soon stop giving away chances and taking ours or it will be more heads in hands than fists punching the air. Still think we will be here next season but we will not make it easy for ourselves it's not the Southampton way.

Not being negative just realistic , have faith and kept behind the manager, he can see what's not quite right and i'm sure it will be fixed. If we finish as low as 16th that wilL do, but that's not what i would want.

The view was appalling. Old Everton mate of mine got us into Everton supporters club and had beers bought for us, friendly lot. They said we were the noisiest away support so far this season.

For my money we took the risk of giving Jay Rod a run out at the expense of a wideman to supply Rickie - Puncheon - or a player to break up their play - Chappers. That's fair enough but he therefore had to take his chances and he didn't, he missed two sitters. He wont start next week.

It's early days and we can't really tell yet. Many say, including him, that he's an 'out and out' striker and doesn't like playing wide right. Well Rickie dropped deep a few times and Jay found himself in the centre forwards position. And surely strikers should revel in 1 on 1 situations? I just think he was given a chance to make a mark and failed to take it. At 2-0 up who knows?

I thought Jay WAS played up front yesterday, wasn't he?

Anyway, that's immaterial. Jay's misses were NA's fault for coughing from the sideline as Jay was about to shoot. Shear tactical naivety, if you ask me. He's not up to the task and should be sacked.

As for that Rickie Lambert bloke, call me a reactionary but he didn't score, so he's clearly past it and should retire NOW.

But, of course, the real problem yesterday was the ease with which Everton carved Saints open and scored three goals and THAT is completely and utterly the fault of Fox and Guly.

And if anyone wants to disagree with me, they can't. I saw at least 5 mins of the match, so I MUST be right.

My first visit to Everton...Goodison is like a bigger version of the Fratton shed...(except bigger and full of supporters!). Superb away support...great day...poor result. I'm beginning to think that we should continue to go all out attack at SMS (our season will be defined by our home games)...but we will need to consider a more defensive line up for away fixtures. In my opinion, we have the defenders to cope...but they are overloaded when our midfield don't provide cover when we are under the cosh.
Keep the faith..keep up the support...and we wil be fine COYR

Does anyone else think lallana is probably not the man for us to be captain?

I think he is a fantastic player and servant to the club andvunderstand why NA gave him the role, but when times are tough i think we need more of a stronger character who can rally and organise the troops, and someone who can see whats going on all over the pitch.

I think it is clear by the way we have conceeded several goals in a short period of time and caved in under the pressure that lallana is not that man.

We cant underestimate the importance of having a good captain and leader on the field, particularly when heads drop.
Steve Davis might fit the bill

Sure, dont disagree with any of that but i still think he might not be the leader vocally that we are missing and no premiership experience. I havent managed to go to any games this season as yet, but id be interested to hear who is there encouraging the team on the pitch when we concede that first goal and then another and then another.

The thing with captain is you need to be virtually ever present. At the moment only Lallana, Lambert and Ramirez are more or less guaranteed their place. I agree with Bill the defensive frailities yesterday were more to do with being ripped apart in midfield than the back four having a bad game. I think Davis has to show he can stiffen up the middle as Lallana and Ramirez go romping forward. We missed Morgan.

That may be true, but has he leadership qualities?

The captain takes over from the manager once the game starts and whilst he works well, I question whether he sees what is required of those around him, and is able to get them to respond.

For my money we took the risk of giving Jay Rod a run out at the expense of a wideman to supply Rickie - Puncheon - or a player to break up their play - Chappers. That's fair enough but he therefore had to take his chances and he didn't, he missed two sitters. He wont start next week.
Round pegs for square holes.
J rod is a centre forward, play him there or not at all.
Yep. As I said he did take up that position sometimes when Rickie dropped deep and left. Centre forwards need to score when presented with those two chances.
I appreciate Adkins may be playing him to keep him match fit should lambert get injured but I do worry his confidence could be taking a knock.
Was always going to be a tough game, everton are an established premier side capable of beating most on their day and after the Leeds defeat had something to prove.
Roll on fulham at St Marys and hopefully a better performance (when not in possession) and result.
Ps can u let strass know where j rod played :)
Good to read that there was some fun banter with the Evertonians. At the end of the '84 semi-final, after we had lost 1-0, I recall a bunch of Saints fans going up to some Evertonians at a pub and singing, 'YOU'RE GOING TO WEMBLEY, YOU'RE GOING TO WEMBLEY, WE'RE NOT, WE'RE NOT!'

Haha - football fans are amazing.

The funny thing is that, like most blokes, I'd sooner lose the use of my legs than go to a musical, and yet I can't get enough of people communicating through song when football is involved. At the end yesterday when the stewards came on one fan started singing "We're going on the pitch" to which another sang "You're gonna get us nicked". Amazing - this is one of many reasons why football is better than rugby.

Anyway, COME ON EUROPE!

It's never really mentioned in the pantheon of great sporting comebacks. I think it's probably down to the media's anti-Saints bias.

I only watched it on the Beeb but once again Fonte looked wanting surely if people on these posts can see he's not up to it so can Adkins?
He did state we're an attacking team but the attackers need to have confidence in the defence if they don't they will sit back instead of out & out attack.
Any good defenders fallen out with their clubs & the club's happy to put them out on loan with an eye to buy?
If there are any grab them & then let's see how we do.
Can't leave it until January windows as they might not want to come to a club at the bottom

I agree.just because JAY ROD got a couple of goals against the Owls shouldn't have meant that he got a start ahead of Punch.Mind you if Jay had put away his chance when we were already 1-0 up i think we would have gone on to get at least 1 if not all 3 points.the everton crowd were starting to get frustrated with their team but alas it wasn't to be.Everton looked a class act and could get a top 4 finish.lets hope if we get a bottom 4 finish it is 4th from bottom.another if only.if only NA had went in for Jelavic last january when he was offereng celtic daft money for his ex scunny player gary hooper..celtic knocked him back over hooper .so he goes and signs another of his ex scunny pals Billy Sharp.ok a slight improvement on our other ex scunny signing Jon Forte but certainly no Jelavic.if only.
