Adkins refuses to alter attacking style Adkins refuses to alter attacking style

Nigel Adkins insists Saints will continue to be positive despite conceding another three goals at Everton.

Though scoring hasn’t been a problem, Saints have now shipped 18 goals in their first six games back in the Premier League .

That is easily the worst defensive record in the top flight.

However, the Saints boss is adamant he will stick by his attacking principles in a bid to win games.

He said: “You should always be positive because you’ve got to look to win games.

“We do play good passing football and that was demonstrated in good spells in the second half.

“And at home we are very effective in doing that, but it’s about winning games of football.

“You’ve got to score goals to win games of football and, likewise, you’ve got to keep them out at the other end.

“We have shipped far too many goals, it’s something we’re addressing, but likewise you’ve got to understand you’re playing against good players.”

Saints let in their three goals at Everton in the space of 13 first half minutes.

Adkins, though, was unrepentant about his team’s forward thinking and clearly believes it’s the right way to go.

Following the completion of the club’s summer transfer window business , he certainly has far more attacking options in his squad than defensive ones.

He can choose between Rickie Lambert , Jaz Rodriguez, Emmanuel Mayuka , Gaston Ramirez , Guly Do Prado and Tadanari Lee for a striking role.

But he only has four frontline centre halves – Maya Yoshida , Jos Hooiveld, Jose Fonte and Dan Seaborne .

“When we analyse all the goals you always think you can do better, but you are playing against top level players,” he reflected.

“We believe we can score and we’ve scored yet again.

“We are looking to go away from home and win games, not just have a defensive mindset.

“We want to be positive in our approach and we demonstrated that with the way we started the game.

“But, likewise, we’ve got to make sure we give ourselves an opportunity to win the game, and if we can’t win it then get a point.”

Adkins summed up: “We believe in playing football the right way, but we’ve come away from home and it’s about winning.

“We’ve got a philosophy but it’s got be effective passing.

“We can do that, as Everton did – they can pass the ball about, move with a good rotation and have that physical presence going forward, but they can play long if they need to.

“It’s about having that all round game.”

Saints took the lead after just six minutes through amirez and could have gone 2-0 up when Rodriguez got in on goal shortly afterwards before firing wide.

Everton took charge and tore Saints apart to lead 3-1 at half time.

But the hosts took their foot off the gas in the second period and gave Ramirez the chance to make things interesting, but again the chance went begging.

It left Adkins felling a little rueful.

“We’ve come away and we started very well,” he said.

“For the first 20-25 minutes we’ve taken the game to Everton, scored a good goal, and if Jay Rodriguez had scored to make it 2-0 it might have been a different final reflection.

“Goals change games and 25 minutes gone the first real passage of play, where Everton have put consecutive passes together, gives them a goal.

“The crowd at Goodison Park got right behind Everton, they upped their tempo a lot.

“The second goal was from a counter attacking phase of play after we’ve had good possession, and that changed the complexion of the game for me.

“About ten-15 minutes before half-time Everton were in the ascendency, well on the front foot and it was very challenging for us to stay in the game.

“Second half we’ve come out with a good composure about ourselves to pass the football and to be effective with our passing.

“If Gaston Ramirez’s little chip had gone inside the post rather than outside then it could have been an interesting final period.”

That's an interesting point.

However, to be fair, although he says the word 'if' twice, he also uses the word 'but' five times. I think a 'but' (with it's reference to facts) cancels out an 'if' (with it's speculative/hopeful nuance) -and as there are more 'buts' than 'ifs' then the balance is heavily towards the facing-the-facts 'but' end of things.

If there had been more ifs they would have added to the truth - and of course adding to the truth automatically subtracts from it.

I think Nige's most telling comment - astutely picked up by the Echo - was: "You've got to score goals to win a game of football and likewise you've got to keep them out at the other end."

A mathematical expression of this would be 3-1.

Pockets of naivety and inability to cope with movement will make a tough season even tougher. If NA is to remain he needs to get some top level experience into his Backroom Staff asap. We can't keep saying "never mind, we'll start our season again next week".

I'm resigned to the fact that we are going to lose games interspersed with odd wins. We must strengthen in defence in January (or before with a free agent)...I think this is why we haven't named a full squad of 25. Still certain we will get enough points.

Found the answer. In 1925/26 Man City scored 89 goals but were relegated. Todate highest number scored by a relegated club. Also 57/58 Man City scored 104 and conceded a 100. Must have been great games!

Looking ahead.....

"The fact is that after a wobbly start, the squad gradually settled and steeled and thanks to a good proportion of home wins - assisted by key signings in the January transfer window - we finished in a comfortable position and with a young side which promises even better next season.

Credit too goes to the supporters who stuck with the manager and the team through the sticky early spell. Lessers fans would certainly have groaned out load - or carped all-knowingly and negatively from the sidelines - and would have threatened the happy outcome.

Particular credit goes to quadruple season ticket holder Confucious who predicted this outcome way back on October 1st.

We didn't lose on Saturday because of our defenders. We lost because Everton were able to run straight through our midfield as though they weren't there.

But Everton are a decent side and Fellani is one of the greatest players in the League - he bossed the midfield and sprayed passes around like a god. Most teams we play don't have a Fellani.

Nothing wrong with sticking to those principals if we have the ability to change our shape quickly when we give away possession, and not wait to gets the lads in at halftime to do it.
Glen hoddle was one of the best Ive seen at doing that,at times it was like watching a a chess master at work.
Its not easy though and dont evny NA the task.
Perhaps its time to sit someone in front of the back four(and stay there).
They are getting turned round far to easily. Some of the problems lie with midfield not the just the defence. Will the new midfield general step up -please.

Let's not panic just yet. The Wigan game is still the only 'bad' result in my opinion. The Villa game has proven that we can beat teams in this division, and I would hope that with the attacking options that we have that NA's tactics will get us enough results against the teams around us to keep our head above water until January at least. We've had some very tough games, which we were not really expected to take much from anyway, but just because these games have been clustered together at the start of the season, does not mean it will be the same every week. Strengthening at the back in January however, I'm sure everyone will agree, is going to be absolutely necessary.

SaintMax says...
11:57am Mon 1 Oct 12

Yes we are letting goals in, but we just cant blame the defence as the team should be adaptable to defend as a unit.
Think of the Chelsea game against Barca - relentless pressure but the team properly setup and each player knowing what their role is can make it almost impossible to be breached.
I agree the defence is extremely lightweight but when they have the top players in the league running at them they get pulled all over the place.

I cant believe the negativity on here, AGAIN, from so many people! If you expected anything other than what we have seen so far this season then you are deluded!

Saints were always going to struggle this season, and especially against the top teams. There are 19 other teams in the league, of which we can realistically expect to give 11 of them a decent game.

We shouldnt expect much from:

Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle

The other 11 teams we should be able to give a good go. That gives us 22 games to and get points from - win 10 of those (mostly at home I expect) and pick up some draws and that is where you get safety from. Anything you then get from the other 16 games is a bonus....perhaps 5 points total from those games.

That then gives us January and next summer to continue to build the squad and progress the club.

Remember that we are a year ahead of the plan, and therefore it will take us a little while longer to overhaul the entire squad, you cant do that in one summer - and we knew it had to be done for the premier league.

Consider this season a bonus, we stay up and continue to build.....patience and belief are key.

Leave Adkins and Cortese alone to get on with it. Turn up, hope, believe, sing and then dont complain if we struggle!!

Together as one!

I think we must have been sat quite near each other.

To be honest I think our only major priority is a left back. Clyne is decent defensively there but he doesn't look comfortable going forward on that flank because he's not left footed. Richardson does ok defensively on the right but his passing isn't up to Premier League standard. So what happens is we look in real danger of giving the ball away whenever it's on the flanks in our own half and this isn't ideal. We need a quality left back so we can send Clyne back to his natural position and this problem is solved.

(I'd also quite like us to buy Fellani or some similarly big bugger to run the midfield. I'd settle for Toure. Or Diaby. Or even Shelvey. I think every big club needs one.)

i think the trouble this season compared to the championship .adkins liked the team to control games,if we did not get a grip he would then change the formation during the game, but the midfields in the premier league so far are a much better class than ours .move the ball much faster than were used to ,and were just not closing down enough through midfield ,the wide players are just watching the ball go past exposing the full backs.nigel keeps playing narrow yet no one moves across to block.if your going to play narrow, you need a player to this at this level, maybe its a big ask of prowse and cork would help.but im yet to see what davis brings to the team ,that hammnond did not ,yet we sent him on loan out of the forced 25 squad ,this is a strange one to me,but im still judging davis time will tell if im wrong .he did ok in the villa game .but i expect hammonnd would of done also ,i just cant see where davis improves the squad,i would drop him for cork later ,and keep prowse in he has been better overall

I was on the very back row until I decided to move down a bit. I was the good looking one stood with a fat bloke - does that help?

I think we need another CB as well as a LB. Even if you think Jos/Jose is up to it there's no strength in depth.

I don't know how you could fit another midfielder in, we've got them coming out of our ears!

You must be actually talking about the Bombay PooPees. The team plays in the Mumbai Rubbish Tip Dwellers Premier Div, but all the players actually live in holes in the municipal sewage farm. They keep winning the league, because they are so dirty and smelly that no-one will tackle them. They also have trained rats living up their bottoms which run out, zip up opposing players' shorts and bite their todgers. sometimes anyone who paints the reality as they see it without fawning over the Saints string-pullers is pulled up for being "negative".... The reality as I see it is that yo-yo clubs aside, clubs promoted to the prem try to do one of two things. A. Kill games and try and pinch points or B. Try and outscore the oppo and survive the first season with attacking football. There is absolutely nothing wrong with either, but, along the way there is still room for mistakes and NA is learning his new trade of a manager in the top flight. A lot of neutrals think we lost points against ManU, were good for points against Wigan and fielded the wrong starting 11 against Everton. I happen to think NA is struggling to put together a solid tactic sheet for entire Prem Games and is finding it a world away from the smash-n-grab of the Championship. I am also not sure we have enough players who are good enough at keeping the ball compared to some teams... but all that said.... I would rather sink or swim with NA than have some "big name" or "big-ish name" parachuted in with the agro and risk that entails. NA has my backing for this 12/13 campaign, but that does not mean he is perfect and its perfectly reasonable to criticise. Its not "negative" for wanting the right decisions made and for the team to win points.

I think Nige's most telling comment - astutely picked up by the Echo - was: "You've got to score goals to win a game of football and likewise you've got to keep them out at the other end." A mathematical expression of this would be 3-1.
I think Adkins is talking out of his "butt"!

Totally agree too. I mean if he is to remain and it's a big IF, one deserving capitals, oh yes, I repeat IF he is to remain well he needs to get some real experience in to his coaching set up like Merson or Adams or Claridge if we could only pursuade him - what a joy that would be! We have three deffence minded midfielders, Cork , Morgan and Davis.

When two of them are injured perhaps the best thing to do is attack?

Arguably when we went 1 up (yes after 6 mins!) we could have doubled up at full back, brought Jay Rod off and put Reeves on leaving Clyne to push up slightly on the left to make a midfield 5.

We have scared a couple of teams, and at some point we will get a big scalp. Everton where very strong but if Jay Rod had scored they may have panicked.

Its shaping up to be a good season IMO

Sorry but I saw fellani make Fonte look a right chump & saw LaLa desperately back tackling him.

Nigel has done wonders for the club but is now tactically out of his depth.I
mentioned Hoddle in the previous thread and he has been mentioned on this thread.Games in the Prem are won
by defenses and although we have a fair amount of talent in the team do not have the defensive ability to play all out
attacking football. If we do not improve this month then, sadly, NA will go.If
this happens then I hope a "Hoddle
type tactician" is brought in.It may not be pretty but it is effective.I am afraid we
are playing the " Southampton Way "

The reason we need more strikers is we need to score 4 to win. I want Atkins to succeed and not to be replaced, but he and his team need to wise up. Playing two centre forwards is not going to work, play Rod left winger is also not going to work. He should have started against Everton with the team that finished against Villa. Although…. We need someone or two people who can tackle in midfield, Spider, La La, Rammy cannot, hence a strong skilful team that is well balanced will pick Saints off. Atkins needs to spot weakness quicker and adjust and not leave it until we are 3 down and game over. The less skilful teams tackle harder so it will not be easier playing teams lower down the league; they are pretty good at this level. Wigan had two chances… Maybe we should bring in Chappers, you could play him with Davies and have La La, Rammy in midfiled with Mully and Lambey playing off each other. All teams defend better than us; if we can sort this out we will be a successful team.

And I'll repeat my offer to bet anyone here that NA will still be our manager at the end of the season.

Also, Fonte doesn't seem to be the problem defensively; as the new guy said, the ball came through the midfield too easily. They were coming down the wings and getting the ball into the box - if Dave Merrington can see it, anyone can!!!! And according to him, the thing we don't want to do now is lose every game until the end of the season...

Similarly, who are these out-of-work international defenders we should be signing up on loan? As far as I can see, all the good ones are already playing.

And top-rate defensive coach? As someone said above - Tony ADams?

Basically, anyone can come on here and say "we need to get half the BArcelona squad into St MArys in time for the Fulham game" - where is the substance? Who are the people you are talking about? Without actual names, it's a pointless argument.

And finally, for every name you think of as a defensive recruit, Nigel could probably name you two that they tried their best to get in during hte break, but couldn't for whatever reason (like Buttner deciding that, for reasons I can't even begin to guess, that he'd rather go and play for Manchester United in the Champion's League than come to us....

We are headed in the right direction, and with a bit of patience we will get there. And if someone has earnt a bit of breathing space before the knives come out, it's Nigel.

The Mail's reporter at the Everton match called us "good enough to be in the Prem but very naive" and I agree, hopefully the defensive naivety gets ironed out over the next few matches while we continue to spray it around and attack. Luckily its only Fulham on Sunday......oh hold on......they are 4th.....oh.

They go on about 'history and tradition' quite a bit.
Is it one of those rubbish clubs which pose as a good one? ie

Fatzio? Bumfica? Real Ale Madrid? Fiorentina Turner? Brian Munich? Parmesan Belgrade? Substandard Liege? Dyslexia Untied?

Or one of the bad "mouths" such as Badmouth, Bigmouth and Loudmouth?

Do the fans smell awful like skunks ......or something very like that?
I think their name is an amalgamation of two very discriptive words.
the second of which sums them up very nicely.
I've been through all the teams in the top divisions in Europe and S America and not just the Prem but the Championship and the top two thirds of Div 1 here and still no luck.

Do I need to hunt even lower? Is hunt one of the two words? Driving me nuts this one.

but many worry that he won't have time, deserves it or not !! NC will settle for 17th but united, city, chelsea, arsenal aside, that is win, win, loose at home and win, draw, loose away from the rest..... It may take the january window to secure that 17th or higher but with some bigger clubs on the up-and-up from the lower division NC will not want us to drop. I think he could do with some advice, but the idea that that could come from Hoddle is absurd. As a squad we do lack experienced pros with premiership experience and its certainly why NC shook hands with punch. I know we are building a squad for the future but we need maybe one old head who has been around the block, be that on the pitch or off it...

He's always "looking at" or "analysing" mistakes that were made without ever actually finding a solution...ie severe defensive frailties. It sticks out like dogs balls and yet everyone seems to just accept it. We are seriously lightweight and just because we've got back to back promotions doesn't mean we're ready for the prem. The opportunity to strengthen was in the close season and both NC and NA, didn't recognise Saints defensive weaknesses and by doing so, failed their life blood, the supporters.
Bring Hoddle back NOW as advisor to NA.
Glenn is a master tactician, forget the fact that he chose Spurs over Saints, under his management Saints had their finest defensive record in my memory!
In my opinion, unless he sees sense, by his comments, NA has shown his inexperience at the top level has signed his own death warrant!

Also, Fonte doesn't seem to be the problem defensively; as the new guy said, the ball came through the midfield too easily. centre backs are not the issue in my opinion, i think the full backs are our biggest weakness as they were last season, too many teams getting the ball down the flanks too easily
a lot of people questioning Fonte but the only two penalties we have conceded this season have been fouls by Jos yet nobody questions him
definately a lot of favouritism amongst our supporters

Dropped? I thought we had a SQUAD of players out of which Nigel picks the team he thinks is right, based on who he has available and the shape he thinks has the best chance of success.

Now, we might disagree with him, but how does not starting with Punch equate to him being dropped?

It's a long season and NA's ability to maximise his squad by rotating it has proved highly successful since he arrived.

One thing for sure if punch played the score wouldn't have been worse! Pretty sure he wasn't injured. I'm behind Adkins as there is no one better out there to replace him and we need continuity, BUT he does make some confusing decision which are hard to defend.

It sticks out like dogs balls and yet everyone seems to just accept it. We are seriously lightweight and just because we've got back to back promotions doesn't mean we're ready for the prem. We can't just keep digesting this crap without some positive action....we're not stupid.
so what do you suggest he does then.
Play Puncheon for a start, been outstanding so far, can't understand why he was dropped Saturday.
neither do I but I'm sure there was a valid reason.and do you think playing punchion would have made that much difference, as he has played mostly down the right. everton scored two goals from crosses on the other flank.
Well for what ever reason, we lost that's a fact. He didn't deserve to be dropped. He played brilliant against Villa, and then gets dropped. And yes I think it would have made a difference
Do you think there's possibly even a slight chance, however small, that NA may have noticed that he played brilliant (sic) against Villa?

Perhapes there was another reason he didn't play him. Do you think there might be a possibility that that is true?
Well you'd of thought so but taking Lambert, lalllana and Puncheon off when you're 2-1 up with 10 minutes to go, I'm not so sure.
they were tired! tey had been running ragged against one of the best teams in the world
why do so many people find that hard to notice?

Well it's certainly not working this season.

I still find it quite amazing that our negs have hit the panic button. This league is a massive step up...and with the exception of Wigan, we have lost against some of the best it has to offer. We have to make the best of the squad we have (to expect that we fund a full squad of proven Prem quality players pre-season was simply unrealistic).
There are far weaker, less stable sides in this league...beat them...and we'll be fine. Rome was not built in a day. Keeping the faith here.

yeh they were if you couldnt see that you must be blind, Lambert was especially dead on his feet
with all the adrenaline at playing a team like united in the prem and leading its understandable for them to be tired, these are players that arent used to the big games yet, theyre like cup finals, had we left them on there would be a serious risk of injuries

definaltely not worried though, just look at the teams we have played and have some perspective on the situation rather than boggling at league table stats, had we played the same teams as West Ham then yes i would be worried bt we have played Arsenal, Man U, Man C and Everton who have lost only 1 in 15, not may teams are going to pick up anything against those 4 this season especially teams around us

I don't see too much negativity... quite the opposite in fact, to hear fans questioning why JP was dropped is pretty positive... anyone who is worried about NA getting the boot due to dodgy decisions are not being negative...99% of fans want him to succeed so when paying fans see decisions they do not understand its understandable that there will be unease..... Football management is tactics-heavy but its not rocket science....

Knowing which players you have that are best at keeping the ball is not as complicated as designing, building and operating a vertical launch muliple use rocket system. Thats obvious of course...... I spoke to someone who was on the coaching staff at Arsenal last year. He said for the 4th tier there are probably 500 available candidates for every management vacancy, for the 3rd tier 50, for the 2nd, 10 and for the top tier probably 4 or 5 and only a 50% chance any of them will cut the mustard.... said it all really....

There are far weaker, less stable sides in this league...beat them...and we'll be fine. Rome was not built in a day. Keeping the faith here.
Sorry MGRA...fooball management on a budget IS rocket science. That is why successful managers progress and get to earn £7mill with the big clubs isn't it? If it is so easy, perhaps we all ought to get our CV's in to NC. Is yours in yet?
Knowing which players you have that are best at keeping the ball is not as complicated as designing, building and operating a vertical launch muliple use rocket system. Thats obvious of course...... Candidates for Prem Management also dont have to have CVs.... they would be laughed at !! :0) I just think footy fans like to question in detail, its always been the case,,, I just don't see it always as "negative".
They design, build and operate muliple use rocket systems?..wow...I bow to you superior knowledge...I thought it took a whole NASA type set up to do that! :O)

can't really argue with that ....... except to say that if it comes off it's inspired , if it don't then it's inept ......not "rocket science" but not as easy as some may think .
I spoke to someone who was on the coaching staff at Arsenal last year. He said for the 4th tier there are probably 500 available candidates for every management vacancy, for the 3rd tier 50, for the 2nd, 10 and for the top tier probably 4 or 5 and only a 50% chance any of them will cut the mustard.... said it all really....
but at what point do you consider that a manager can "cut the mustard".I can understand why fans want to know the goings on at their club, but adkins is being hammered by some already.how long will he get until it's deemed a success or failure.six games, ten, half a season I think he's earned a proper tilt at this and we should get behind him.
then see what happens,

we might all be suprised!!

Fair play to you skunts. Despite facing oblivion, or worse still Chainrai, you still come on here giving it the large one suggesting the manager who got back to backs for us is suddenly not capable of rising to a new level.

The clever logins (sic) you use dont fool us because they (you) havent been on here in the last few years of strife. Had you spent months and months establishing yourselves then we might listen. That is why I have a voice on the News. Sorry but you arent in the same league. Or the one below.

Well it's certainly not working this season.
I love patience, it is such a vital attribute in football or any walk of life..

No sh1t Sherlock. I seem to remember you had us down for being doomed last season. We got promoted...then you disappeared for a while. Do you only post when we lose?
Hold my hands up to that one, admit I was wrong but it was a lot closer than it needed to be. As for being negative I've simply questioned Adkins tactics, as a season ticket holder I think I have a right to my opinion, the same as you do. I do keep the faith because I'm there every week.

But we are scoring a lot and our goal difference is not the worst, after playing the teams we have it may well have been worse. Yes, we are conceding a lot, but we are scoring as well. I woukd be worried if we couldnt score. I would have taken a position out of the bottom three at this stage after the fixtures we have had.

I think a sense of realism is needed, there are 3 teams below us who have yet to face the number of top teams we have done so far.

Overall I'm not too disappointed. I have a lot of faith that we will grow in this league and stay up.

Yes and look at David Moyes, been at Everton for ten years, I can't remember the last time they were in a relegation fight.

But hey, I think it's boring keeping faith in a manager and building a stable club. I too long for the days when we can bring in more managers than my local Tesco seem to have.

Oh how I want saggy chops back, he saved us last time!
Before the doom merchants think this is FACT, please note the tiniest bit of sarcasm in both of these posts!!!
Sarcasm, Rande? Mention that word to some of the doom merchants on here, and they'll think you're talking about a North African defender that Nigel failed to sign in the transfer window.
It is criminal that NA and NC failed to pull that signing off. Even my next door neighbours pet hamster could see we needed him in our back four. NA should Hang his head in shame.

Now NC fix it, bring in a manager with defensive sensibilities, I want to see 10 in defence and a 1-0 or 0-0 score line every week. Where's George (my team won't score more than 1) Graham when we need him.

norwich only tottenham away currently 5th for a draw
wigan.. man u away lose, chelsea home lose, fullham home lose and stoke home lose

so by my calculations we have played 4 of the big 5 , 3 of those 4 were away, and we were in front of 2 of them (2-1 up at a stages in game) but simple lapses cost us

so by my calculations we have played 4 of the big 5 , 3 of those 4 were away, and we were in front of 2 of them (2-1 up at a stages in game) but simple lapses cost us
simple learn from it , move on and be positive...we are going alright
C O Y R from sydney oz
lets not be saying this all season though..... " well we have played x y and z and they are in the top 10 " . We need to find our spirit again.

Think the attacking style - getting numbers forward is great at Home where the expectation is to score plenty of goals and WIN well.

Next up are two winnable games and a minimum of 4 / 6 points.

I'm not hitting the panic button, but the fact is we have won one game and are conceding a lot of goals.
This obsession that being a ST holder gives you some kind of power over the way the Club is run is a bit strange, you of course have a right to an opinion, it's a free country, you also have a tendency to be wrong on quite a few of your posts, you only seem to appear when things are not going right. You are at your happiest when you come on here with a "I told you so" message, well if that is what turns you on, fair enough, but don't expect us happy clappers, plastics, and optimists to join your club, we too want what you want, but just look at it from a different angle.

It certainly has been a baptism of fire but I still would not want to be in any other league. We have got used to winning over the last three years and I optimistically thought we could stroll into the Premier League and bully a few of the big boys. But they are where they are for a very good reason and when we do start knocking them off of their pedestals it will feel even better. We have found out where we are lacking and I trust in NA and NC to put that right. With what we have I sill believe we are good enough to finish mid table. The next five games will give a good indication. . . Winning four out of five is very possible and our run in at the end of the season looks good. Nigel is definitely the right man to take our great club to the next level. COYRs !!

we won't win 4 but 7 or 9 points would set us on course. If you look at the history of premier league relegations there are two things that stick out above all else.... you HAVE to win 50% of your home games and you HAVE be able to keep a clean sheet 1-in-3.... There simply is no history of a team out-scoring their way to safety at the expense of goals going in every game..... Nigel Knows this I am sure...

Blimey, it looks like Portsmouth have not changed their ways at all.

Am I the only one that finds it incredible that a business (i.e. Portsmouth FC) are allowed to continue to keep operating their on going revolving door recruitment policy? How can a business in administration be allowed to compete and ultimately beat well financed and stable sides to bringing in players?

If I were one of the players that had taken a deal to leave the club, like Kitson etc, I would be looking at this situation seriously with a degree of doubt as to what is going on. It is funny how Portsmouth can't pay the tax bill, charities, businesses and players that are owed money, but they are allowed to continue to recruit players on what seems to be good wages. They should be forced to use the development squad. This has turned into a farce.

Before the doomsayers next complain about NC or NA, they should look at Portsmouth and what a ludicrous situation they have been allowed to create. The proof in the pudding is that every other club can see them for what they are as well, it is not just a biased view point from a Saints supporter. Many fans are saying the same thing about them.

Anyway, I'm really proud of the Saints, whatever happens this season. Who agrees?

I'm interested in Saints staying in the Premiership, nothing more nothing less!
I admire NA for what he has done but he has yet to realise that the Premiership is a different world.
No one likes to admit that they are struggling , NA clearly is and his statement that he is not changing styles after conceding 18 in 6 confirms that.
I have always said the NC should back NA and not sack him.
My suggestion to bring in Hoddle as an advisor was a constructive one.
I don't see many other intelligent comments unless of course calling people skate and skunk is considered intelligent, which come to think of it it may be to a cretin.

Fair and reasoned comment ghk.

I must admit, and this is possibly a fault in my makeup as a human being, but I love to see Portsmouth in the mire as their bestest of the best ever fans were so quick to laud it over us when things were going wrong. Let's face it, the less intelligent of them still try to argue that they are a better club even now, after all their rotten history and sad sorrowful current state. They still boast about their proud history, although who was it that said "A history is only proud when the present and the future has solid foundations"... Mmm, that may have been me, but good quote anyway!

Otherwise ghk I do agree with much of your sentiment.

If I'm honest I couldn't give a flying f11ck about Pompey, never could. Even when we had our problems I looked around at what we have, new stadium and training facilities and thought there was too much there for any one to let go to waste. Pompey have sweet fa, they even have to train in Southampton.
I see us as a half descent mid table premier league team. To move further would take adding to the attendance to St Marys which at the moment is not warranted due to fan base/ popularity.
We are possibly 5-7 years behind the power 4 as are many clubs, but top 10 or little lower and playing attractive football simular under wgs reign and that's me happy.
So when we aren't quite achieving that there is a little discontent but at the moment I appreciate this season is a learning curve. A few concerns about planning in last 2 transfer windows but getting the right players in at the right price is not easy. Adkins has my backing but is not without faults, as a paying saints fan I'm allowed to air that and will
Fair and reasoned comment ghk.

I've always managed to have a friendly banter with Pompey fans, but I wouldn't go out of my way to log on to their website and antagonise them.
It's a shame we can't play them every season, the atmosphere at St Mary in 2-2 draw still brings a shiver to my spine.
Even when they won the f.a. Cup and we were struggling I never wished that was us, still felt better than them as we had the stadium and training facilities.

Sorry to say if NA is serious about not changing tactics and sticks his head in the sand like an ostrich, he is likely to get a huge kick up the *ss!

You are not interested in knocking other teams, but you spend an excessive time on here knocking the Saints, why can you not see, that is what is getting you so much stick? Wake up and smell the coffee, every time you post a negative opinion, your reputation takes another knock, try posting an occasional positive thought, and you may save your soul, other wise it will be a request to burn in hell because you are not a true believer.

totaly agree.NA and his back staff are out of their depth at this level.guess thats why NC wanted to get someone different in at the end of last season.silly what if question.what if chelsea never beat bayern in the champions league and abramovich sacked Roberto D.
Totally agree too. I mean if he is to remain and it's a big IF, one deserving capitals, oh yes, I repeat IF he is to remain well he needs to get some real experience in to his coaching set up like Merson or Adams or Claridge if we could only pursuade him - what a joy that would be! Proper TOP LEVEL. If only we could have had Roberto D, he wouldn't be out of his depth, he's got at least a bronze survival badge.

Anyway, got to go. See you Saturday, usual place, back of the fratton end. Oh yes!
Now Tony Adams would be a half decent defensive coach.Paul Merson would only be any use in the bar and Steve Clarridge is being head hunted by Michael Appleton to lead the porpoisemouth attack in their fight against relegation to the bottom tier. The last time i was at the back of the fratton end Ron Davies was doing his stuff for porpoisemouth and they had a guy from Southampton -John Deacon- as owner.the last decent owner that club had.since then its been dodgy cockneys, dodgy yugoslavs, russian spivs and pauper stricken arabs in charge.

The next 5 games will point the way and wins are needed soon both for the fans and players.
2 new centrebacks are a must and defenders that are in the prem would be nice ,but we may have to shop abroad.
I think the team is coming along nicely but might take a month or more before the team starts to gel and get results. The premiership now isnt about playing games and having a nice time ,its the money league and when you get there just staying is in it is hard.I think by mid jan we will start to have solid performances and hang in there. to be honest its not what you 2 say (however stupid some of your comments are), its the way you say it!
everyone has an opinion and is entitled to say it, season ticket holder or not, but when you post rubbish about NA and how bad a manager he is and how we need to change NOW, that is when you will get short shirft from me.
the boorer keeps bringing up how intellegent he is and how dumb everyone else is! but when questioned about his level of intellegence, he never responds, why is that i wonder.
to constantly state that NC should bring in hoddle is just ridiculous, what makes you think that NC or NA want or need an advisor? we are not and i say this again NOT in the relegation zone and now is not the time to panic! qpr have spent a fortune over the last 2 years, and look where thats got them, bringing in a whole squad of new players will not work, it never has! what will work is leaving a highly skilled manager to get on with his job with the players he has got. yes we will strengthen in jan, but that is jan not now! if you must criticize then thats fine, but try doing it in a positive manner, like most do, and dont think that you are better and above others! oh and dont keep saying the same thing over and over again.

To be fair, you didn't ask why Punchy didn't play.

To do that, you might say "I wonder why Puncheon didn't play". That's how you ask a question.

Saying "Play Puncheon for a start, been outstanding so far, can't understand why he was dropped Saturday." is not asking a question, it's rather closer to making an accusation.

So, coming over all innocent as though you just asked a harmless question rather than forcing a point is more than a little disingenuous.

I think the problem here is that your points and the way you make them boarder on assassination of the club and all that has been achieved, Both you and Tebourba have the same faults in the way you state with a "matter of fact" attitude with absolutely no balance of support and praise for what has so far been achieved at this great club.

Maybe you take it for granted the monumental achievement that Nigel Adkins, Nicola Cortese and all the other hard working individuals that have made fantastic achievements over the last two years. I see absolutely no benefit in continually criticizing the manager and chairman, I find it obscene that you do so without any balance of positive cogitation.

We all have our moments where we possibly don't agree with certain tactical decisions during a game, but then we are all world class football managers when we are sat / stood in the stands. The truth is none of us know the players as well as the manager, none of us would have achieved two promotions. None of us would have taken over a team who were in relegation trouble to the Premier League in two years. If any person deserves some respect and support, I believe Nigel Adkins does.

Now, according to you anyone who shows a partisan view point means they are a happy clappy fool who blindly follows and believes everything in the garden is rosy, you are wrong. I think we are just a little bit more reasoned in our thinking of how fortunate we have been and find a little gratitude and support is the least we should do.

It's all so easy to sit and support a team who win week in week out, but a real supporter is somebody who will give that little bit extra when things are not going so well. Our club has been good to us, now as a supporter I feel it is my duty to be a small part of a backbone to help our team when things are not so good, in any way possible. It is with this amazing backbone that most Saints fans have that help put in such great foundations for our club, for that I relish the opportunity to support the people who have got us where we are. If that makes me a happy clappy fool, then so be it.

Just read this and it just oozes balance, reason and sound judgement. A Nobel prize winning post.

If there was an Echo poll for most boring self opinionated smug pessimistic posts then both Tebourba and ThomasUpton would be clear winners. They are indeed entitled to their opinion, as are we all, but they put a slant in their comments that seems to suggest they think their view is from Mount Olympus rather than Mount Mole Hill.

Still - it livens things up a bit now and then.

Thank you Alicesdad, very kind of you to say so.

I must say you have added to this post with equal measure of reasoned thought and a viewpoint I feel many share about the posts often made by Tebourba & Thomasupton.

I have nothing against people voicing their opinions, but it does irritate me if the same people only ever voice their opinions when things are not going so well. I think the majority of us on this forum share a common goal that we all want Saints to succeed.

The nice thing is I do find myself nodding in agreement or at least understanding an individuals view point in the majority of the regular posters on here. So I guess on balance we have a great set of supporters who all seem to agree with what is good about the club.

Therefore, all regular posters who make contributions to this forum with reasoned and supportive posts should all pat themselves on the back (including you alicesdad, Seed, StRetford, Slugger, Angus, Strassy, Velleity..... Oh heck there are too many to mention, but you know who you are). Please add your name if you wish!!

Anyway, I would just like to say, I am proud of the majority of Saints fans, this is what makes our club great!

Even the Captain of the Costa Concordia would understand that if a liner is shipping water at the rate of 18 gallons a second and the crew are baling it out at the rate of 10 gallons a second, unless something changes, the liner will eventually sink.
Why is this simple fact lost on NA and NC?
Bring in Glenn Hoddle now, on a temporary basis, to be NA's mentor and confidant and stop us shipping so much water!
Under Hoddle Saints had the best defensive record ever!

11:27am Wed 3 Oct 12

That last line is very true TEB think we won 5 games in a row 1-0 but you also have to remember that we had Dean Richards RIP, Claus and Bridgey all in the same defence. He's not really done anything at all since leaving us

SO50 --- there isn't a Saints supporter who, right now, wouldn't settle for five , 1-0 wins on the trot!
I must confess my ignorance, which may come as a surprise to my many critics, but can anyone out there, tell me how many of the current Saints' coaching/management staff have previous experience of coaching/managing in the Premier League and if so with whom and for how long.

SO50 Saint says...

Your not wrong there the point I was getting at was back then it was a far better defence than what we have at the moment

TEBOURBA says...
2:11pm Wed 3 Oct 12

SO50 --- I completely agree with you.
I support NA who is a good coach, one of the best.
I may be wrong but I don't think there is anyone at St Mary's with Premier League experience, which everyone knows is an entirely different and challenging league than NA is used to.
I just think that NA needs and would welcome, someone like Hoddle to help him get acclimatised to life in the Premiership.
Surely that's a better proposition than allowing NA to continue struggling and then NC sacking him at Xmas if the goals against record hasn't improved?
We need NA and NA needs help NOW.

SO50 Saint says...

The problem is everyone posting on here knows our defence wasn't really strengthened to the extent it should have been during the summer. I feel that if the results don't come for Nigel unfortunately he will be out of the job come the end of this month. These next 2 months are massive if we are going to stay up and points need to be picked up on a regular basis. I really hope this does not happen as there is no-one out there I would prefer to manage our club at present than Nigel. I can't see them bringing someone in to help him either but that's just in my opinion. Sunday is massive though Berbatov was injured for their last game hope he's out of ours aswell

You think it is? I don't. I'm pretty sure that the two of them might have at least some idea about how to run a football club.

If you took a more balanced view you might be able to see it. It seems to me that you're so desperate to make things sound bad that you're trapped in flights of fantasy where NA doesn't know that having more goals scored against you than you score is not a good thing as far as football is concerned. Do you REALLY think he doesn't know? REALLY?

One thing I do notice is you all post all day, do none of you work, how on earth do you afford to buy tickets? Another thing I notice is you all post about me while I'm out working?????
We don't post all day, I have just retired and have a bit of time on my hands and find a little bit of enjoyment out of posting on here, hope that is all right with you, if it isn't I'll stick to not606.com, better class of poster on there, gomarchingin would love you to join us on there, although somehow I think you already are judging by some of the more negative comments.

I admire NA for what he has done for the Saints, he could be the best manager Saints have ever had, his record speaks for itself.
I don't think he did himself any favours by stating, after shipping 18 goals in 6 games that he wasn't changing his style of play.
I read in to that, complacency with things the way they are.
The Premier League is a world apart, as far as I am aware there is no one at St Mary's with Premier League experience, so who can NA turn to for advice? --- no one !
Hoddle had the best defensive record in Saints history, SO50 tells me that under Hoddle, Saints won 5 games on the trot 1 - 0.
I'm sure that every Saints supporter would be over the moon if Saints won their next 5 games by 1-0.
I do not want to see NA go but I fear that if we leak goals in the next 6 games the same as we have in the last 6 then NC will sack him.
I would much prefer someone like Hoddle, of proven Premier League ability, to come in now, on a temporary contract, to assist NA, help him to acclimatise to the faster and more intricate play in the Premier League and help him shore up the defence.
To my mind backing is better than sacking.
Having supported the Saints for donkey's years and having seen managers come and go, some unfairly sacked in my opinion and some I couldn't wait to see the back of, I think bringing in some experienced coaching support for NA now, is worth a try.
Surely it's better than doing nothing.

Someone did tell me yesterday that Gordon Strachan had been approached. I know he stills lives local but I didn't know this bloke so probably no truth to it.
