James Beattie wants Southampton to make it a St Mary's fortress
7:00am Thursday 4th October 2012 in Saints News
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
JAMES Beattie still has the ball at home – a reminder of the day he put three goals past one of the greatest keepers of the modern era.
It was ten years ago this month that the striker hit his one and only Saints hat-trick, in a 4-2 Premier League victory against Fulham at a windswept St Mary’s.
Even the distinguished presence of Edwin van der Sar in the visitors’ goal could do nothing to stop the forward breezing through the Cottagers’ back line that day.
Lee Clark’s early strike, via a deflection off Michael Svensson’s back, and Steed Malbranque’s emphatic finish, after some rather generous defending allowed a simple low cross to slip through to him, had put Fulham well in command.
No matter, though.
It took just two minutes for Saints to pull one back, Beattie firing a trademark penalty into the top corner after Alain Goma had handled.
The match was level by half-time, as Beattie cushioned a header past Van der Sar having latched onto the end of a Fabrice Fernandes cross.
“We were two down and the fans were giving us a bit of abuse,” recalled Beattie.
“But I scored a penalty and then we got it back to 2-2. Fernandes delivered a great ball to the back post and I headed it back across Van der Sar.
“We came out in the second half and played much better.”
Within ten minutes of the restart, Saints had the lead. Anders Svensson’s free-kick from the left touchline skidded off the top of a leaping Beattie’s head and flew past Van der Sar.
“Anders put in a freekick and I just glanced it into the far corner,” said Beattie. “Then Brett (Ormerod) scored the last one.”
The match proved to be a microcosm of Saints’ season, starting badly but finishing with a flourish.
One win in their first eight games had left Gordon Strachan’s men in the relegation zone.
But the Fulham success capped a three-match winning streak that lifted the team into mid-table.
It was also a second consecutive home victory – something a win over the London side on Sunday would mean for the current team.
The game finished with Beattie catching Antti Niemi’s goal-kick as the final whistle blew. The hattrick ball was safely tucked under his shirt and now has pride of place at his house.
“It was my first hattrick,” said Beattie. “I used to get quite a few braces, but it was my first hattrick.
“It was great and I’ve still got the ball. There’s a couple of messages from Oaksey (Matt Oakley) and Bridgey (Wayne Bridge) on it saying ‘First of many’ – but obviously it wasn’t!”
Beattie’s hat-trick helped spark not only his most successful season ever – he scored 24 times across all competitions – but also one of Saints’ most memorable campaigns, with the club reaching the FA Cup final and finishing eighth in the Premier League.
The 34-year-old, currently a free agent, is keeping his fingers crossed that a positive result for Nigel Adkins’ men against Fulham this weekend will help kickstart their own campaign.
“Hopefully it will,” said Beattie. “It’s a great opportunity and a big game for them, being at home.
“But Fulham have signed some good players and they will be hoping to get a result as well.
“The key to it is the home form. That is going to be massive, as Norwich and Swansea have shown. I think Swansea is one of the hardest places to go to in the country and get a result.
“They’ve got to try and emulate teams like that.”
Saints had no trouble with results at St Mary’s in the 2002/03 campaign. They lost just two of their 19 home fixtures in the Premier League that season.
“It was just a great time in my life down in Southampton,” said Beattie, looking back on it.
“Gordon Strachan was the best manager I have worked under. He was brilliant.
“I still speak to him now. He’s a top guy.”
Beattie added: “I remember leading the goal charts all the way through that season.
“Barclaycard were giving out a trophy for the first to ten, and the first to 20, which I got.
“Then I think Van Nistelrooy scored three in his second-tolast game and Henry got one to go ahead of me.
“We were playing at Maine Road on the final day and I was just shooting from everywhere trying to get a goal.”
Rather than Beattie, it is Rickie Lambert who is now shouldering the bulk of the goalscoring responsibilities at Saints.
A hat-trick for him against the Cottagers this weekend would do Adkins’ side the world of good.
“He’s done really well,” said Beattie of the man currently leading the Saints line. “He’s been prolific in League One and the Championship, and he’s carried that on and scored a few in the Premier League now.
“Hopefully he can keep that going. He just needs the service. He’s shown that, if you give him that, he’s a great finisher.
“I’ve met him on a couple of occasions and he’s a really nice lad. You want people like that to do well in the game.
“The fans love him and he just gives the whole club a lift. The rest of the lads really respond to him being on the pitch. Look at the Manchester City game. He came on and scored within a few minutes and straight away they kicked on and found another gear.”
That is something Saints will be hoping to find again on Sunday.

I would like to think we can make St Marys in to a Fortress but not with the deffence we have at present. NA and NC should have got more deffenders in over the summer as I think must supports was saying that we needed deffenders we got two but this has been shown not to be right I just hope that by Jan we are in a possition to pick up some good deffenders COYR's win Sunday please

Personally I don't think so.
I agree with the sentiment that we need to make st Mary's a fortress, though, to do at all well from here on out. Looking forward to filament, that I'll be a good test for us.

1. Develop a time machine (how hard can it be?), pop back to the transfer window and sign the best defenders in the world. After all, they were all looking for moves and the deals would have been simple and uncomplicated. To be honest, can't see why we didn't just get them at the time.
2. Sell Guly
3. Sell Fox
4. Sell Fonte... well, in short, sell anyone who's ever been criticised on here.
5. Execute Kelvin. It's all his fault.
6. Sell J-Rod; after six games we have enough information to know that he's useless. A £7M player never takes time to find his feet in a new team in a new division.
7. Get Hoddle in to run the team in an "advisory capacity"
8. Replace NA with old Saggy Chops
9. Sack NC, as he clearly knows nothing at all about anything and is impossible to negotiate with.
10. Find loads of fantastic defenders who, mysteriously, are out of contract despite being fantastic. Sign them up and make sure they are are all playing perfectly from day one.
Oh, hang on, it's an eleven point plan
11. Bionic legs for Rickie so he never needs to be substituted ever, no matter how tired the rest of his body may be.
Oh dear, twelve.
12. Play 8-1-1. That way we'll win every game

Fortifying isn't our forte. Forty games means twenty forthcoming outside the fort ie once a fortnight. Our fortune will lie in fortitude in attack.
Otherwise, suggest forthright resigning of Forte would be fortuitous.

He's a really nice guy. Our defence however isn't just about the back four. It's about us being knocked off the ball too easily in midfield and not covering the threats out wide efficiently enough either. We know we are going to score goals from everywhere on the park. But the coaching staff need to focus on organisation when we don't have the ball. I think it's tough just blaming the back 4 only. Yes the left side full back situation is a concern but opponents have been coming through left right and centre!! However, I am confident the home form will be strong. And as the season progresses we will start to pick up points away.
Only12 more wins needed and a couple of draws to be safe. 15 Wins and 7 draws and we are top half.

But after a baptism of fire against the 4 of the top teams 3 which have been away I am sure that starting Sunday we will see a change of fortune.
Lallana Lambert Ramirez (Cork will) Scnides ...we have some class players who have already proved they can deliver in the Prem now its up to the rest of them to step up and deliver and in Fontes case concentrate for 95minutes.

Partly my fault. I saw this coming and e mailed Nige this morning. Unfortunately, I told him to watch out for a huge wooden Trojan Guly.
We're doomed!
After entering, it broke open and loads of little guys came out and really screwed everyone's day up.

Does anyone know if Berbatov has recovered from his injury because he is the one fulham player we really have to be wary of on Sunday
Andy Carroll came on as sub this weekend back from his hamstring injury so he will be ready to go against us next week.
Personally, I’d rather see us play teams with all their star players in, that’s after all what it is all about.

Any defence, especially a poor one, needs a good goalkeeper, Saints haven't fielded one so far this season, hopefully Boruc will do the business and bring some stability.
I say again, we have the players we have and that won't change until the next transfer window.
The Premier League is the toughest in the world and there is no one in the coaching squad at St Mary's with Premier League experience.
NA needs help from a coach with PL experience, Hoddle is a master tactician, Saints had their best defence ever under him, he knows the Saints and should be appointed as NA's adviser under a temporary contract.
To my mind that will bring the best out of the players we have and will take some of the pressure off NA.
Surely it would be a positive step much better than doing nothing, just hoping things will change.
If nothing is done and results don't improve, NC will sack NA before Christmas, which would be a disaster for the Club, NA has the ability to be the finest manager Saints have ever had, he just needs some short term, experienced help NOW to find his feet in the PL.
NA is a big enough man to recognise he needs help and I'm sure he would welcome someone like Glenn at his side.

They're out there but it looks like we let some slip from our fingers such as Buttner.

It cost us a point against Man U and also against Man City. Against Villa we could have been 2-0 down if Benteke had scored that header from a corner.

The London is still there, taken over the mantle of the Juniper Berry. I noticed the other day that the Juniper Berry is still open. You mention the London in Woolston but there was also a pub right down by the floating bridge, can't rememeber the name. The pubs in town you have forgotten Scullards, Park Inn, The Dorsetshire(which was the smallest pub in England) plus numerous others.
Oh, I remember, the metropolis answer to David Icke, the bloke that got the sack the day after Gordon's Saints won at White Spud Lane.
If we were taking anyone from our chequered past I'd have Wee Gordon's input anytime over your spiritual leader Tebourba, now why don't you go to Spain where he mainly trains before more people complains.
Us bring back Hoddle would be as likely as the skunts bringing back Chainrai....

My Dad eckoned in the fifties and early sixties if you started at the Sun and had a half in every pub/hotel between there and the Bargate you would be legless.
Just when I thought my mind was clear, Robbo has to put another ex Woolston pub into my inquisitive brain.

We can't employ new players so we have to employ new tactics.
If we don't and the next 6 games are like our last 6, Saints will be down and out, NC will sack NA and Saints will be in turmoil.
There's no one at St Mary's with PL experience.
All I am suggesting, instead of just hoping and praying things will change is that NC brings someone in with PL experience to assist NA.
NA ihas fund himself in totally different ball game in the PL and hasn't the experience to turn things around on his own, that's not just my view, look at the many other posters criticising his team selections and substitiutions.
It needn't be Hoddle, I just recall he built the best defence Saints have ever had.
At least I'm suggesting something positive, if things don't change then we can only assume that NC and NA are happy with the current situation.
Maybe they are kneeling on their prayer mats as I write!

I think that there is a simple ten step solution:

I'm a A licence coach and own my own coaching company but I never come on here spouting tactical crap! I'll leave that to the guy who is more qualified and experienced than all if us put together.
He has got us back to back promotions playing the game in style and if that style means we go down this season then so be it.
The alternative is to play the type of football that Stoke and West Ham do and I know what I'd prefer!
Up the Saints!

He said..... Swansea started a 5 year plan with spanish bloke who's name I forget(Wigan manager) and he was followed by Sousa who was followed by Rodgers and they all played the game the same way.
That plan has finally borne fruit and now current manager is still playing to the same guidelines and everyone thinks it happened overnight.
Saints have embarked on a similar scheme and are 3 years in to it and have just had their first hiccup .
This immediately brings out the doomngloomtebourba telling us to get Hoddle in.
He did not have our best ever defence.
We were 11th when he joined, we were 11th when he left.
Big Lawrie was the only manager who employed a sweeper, Reuben Agboola, and was crucified when he first used it. We finished 2nd!

So I agree he needs help, that is obvious because yes some of his tactical decisions have been short-sighted.... but then again, lets take a step back and look at the strategic plan, this year we simply need to stay up so the mission is just peg above the three worse teams... NC/NA are more than capable of steering us into the final phaze of the grand plan, from season 2013/14 and onwards.

I think that there is a simple ten step solution:

The idea that Hoddle comes in to 'advise' NA is plain daft. If we don't improve nothing is gained and if we do there will then be a minority pushing for him to replace NA as manager saying he has shown he is better! It's a lose lose situation.
Whether you like NA or not there is no doubt he has achieved a unity and spirit amongst the team that we haven't seen for a very long time and in any organisation that is a massive benefit.
You knock him for not signing defenders. Well we know we agreed transfer fee and wages with Buttner. We know he said he wanted to come here. We know his chairman said we behaved impeccibly. Maybe just maybe NC pulled out over the bad publicity over the '3rd party' and maybe just maybe NA had no say whatsoever about it.

He experimented with Jay Rod last week and if he hadn't have missed a couple of sitters it could have come off. As it was Puncheon supplying Lambo may have been better. Also no Morgan didn't help.

And the central defenders are too easy for opposition forwards to lose. I don't understand how we managed to sign so many forwards and midfielders but not defenders. They're out there but it looks like we let some slip from our fingers such as Buttner.
Southampton boy wrote:I think what we struggled to do was find these 'good' defenders. Most of the names mentioned over the summer were average and no better than what we have. Yoshida looked good against Villa and will be even better once he's settled properly and clyne is looking good aswell. Personally I think our problem with defending is our zonal marking from corners. It cost us a point against Man U and also against Man City. Against Villa we could have been 2-0 down if Benteke had scored that header from a corner.

The idea that Hoddle comes in to 'advise' NA is plain daft. If we don't improve nothing is gained and if we do there will then be a minority pushing for him to replace NA as manager saying he has shown he is better! It's a lose lose situation.

TEBOURBA wrote:tebourba, will you stop using words like "us" in your posts.
I hope Boruc pays in goal on Sunday, Gazzaniga was a bundle of nerves against Everton, showing his youth and inexperience and unsettling the defence.
NA is a big enough man to recognise he needs help and I'm sure he would welcome someone like Glenn at his side.
your a skunt and we all know it.
and hoddle dosen't know saints as you put it. we have a completely different set to the one hoddle knew, and deserted when spurs came calling
or are you eileen drewery in disguise, old glens spiritual advisor and agony aunt
perhaps saints fans should be asking you for advice on a personal level.
so come on boys, let tebourba solve your personal problems while he solves all our tactical problems
You might or might not be a supporter (and I don't care either way) but you're a very deliberate wind up merchant.
Banging on incessantly on the same two points "Puncheon at Everton" and "Hoddle" is the work of a wind-up merchant, not someone who cares.
Do you have any real friends? I bet you don't have many sitting near you at the ground if you're this tediously negative when you're there. You are so BORING.
