Southampton looking to extend home record against Fulham

Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins

Saints are hoping to extend one of their finest home records when they take on Fulham at St Mary’s on Sunday.

Nigel Adkins’ team are desperate for another home victory to go alongside their 4-1 demolition of Aston Villa as they aim to go into the next international break with six points on the board.

To do that they have to get past Martin Jol’s Fulham side – but the omens are very good.

Saints have amassed a quite remarkable home record against the Cottagers down the years, losing just once in 27 league meetings on the south coast – and that in the pre-war era.

It was 1935 the last time Fulham actually beat Saints on their own patch and Adkins and his team will certainly be aiming to extend that run still further.

An even better omen for the three points is that of the 27 meetings, Saints have actually won 19 and drawn just seven.

As he prepares for the game Adkins has some major decisions to make with his team.

He tinkered with the side that defeated Villa and saw the team lose 3-1 at Everton last weekend.

Among his biggest dilemmas is whether to stick with Paulo Gazzaniga in goal, draft in new signing Artur Boruc or recall Kelvin Davis.

In the centre half department Adkins partnered Maya Yoshida with Jose Fonte at Goodison Park but Jos Hooiveld is now considered fully fit and is hoping for a recall.

In the left back slot Danny Fox should be available but at Everton it was Nathaniel Clyne moved across the back line with Frazer Richardson at right back.

Jason Puncheon is also pushing for a recall after being left out at Everton despite some impressive recent displays.

Morgan Schneiderlin still appears unlikely to be fit for the game after injuring his knee ligaments while Jack Cork also remains on the sidelines.

Well done Echo - can just see Martin Jol cutting out this headline and using it to motivate his side, without referring to the rest of the article. Typical Echo sensationalist headline to try and sell more copy, and to hell with the consequences

Cos Martin Jol is an avid Echo reader isnt he? Of course a local rag is going to be positive about its home side, thats hardly going to motivate the away team more.
They will know the stats, and Jol will use the facts to motivate anyway.
Good positive piece Echo, and I'm confident after we bed ourselves into the game we will command it and get what we need.

It will be interesting to see how many fans Fulham take with them - they've always struck me as one of those teams for people who live in affluent West London and like to go to football to show how 'authentic' they are, but wouldn't dream of leaving the delis on the Kings Road if their team were playing away.

Maybe this is why their away record is so rubbish?

Fulham have sold just over 2,000 tickets for the game.

I remember when Fulham last played at SMS back in 2005.
During that game, just into the 2nd half, when Jamie Redknapp was blatantly fouled and the ref didnt give anything.

From that incident, Fulham gained possession and went on to score their 3rd goal.

It turned out to be 2points 'lost' in our relegation fight.

We don't have to restrict our choice to someone actually from the area (Fulham didn't, which is why it's such genius).

We should try and out-random them by going for someone like Chad Kroeger from Nickelback or Alf Fisher from Home & Away. It would blow their minds.

If you want that go and support Chelsea or man utd ? We definitely have to tighten up the system especially away from home , not sure that the we will score more goals than the opposition way is going to keep us up , have to grind out the odd 1-0 but think it's harsh to blame just the goalkeeper and defence .

Our tactics have been poor defensively; Fox has been good going forward and dead ball stuff, our goalkeeper position now shows promise and we will improve in this area. Midfield is still an issue, we have only Davies who can tackle, Spiderman is good to watch, good passer, but we need more steel. I also tink the balance is not right, which is why we play pretty stuff going forward, while leaking goals as teams walk through our midfield poring onto our defence unchallenged. Arsenal had the same problem when Wenger first went there, so he put Petie and Veria in front of the back four. I like the option of Mululu and Lambert, maybe starting will be a bit risky, but this guy running onto Lamberts flicks and passes could scare the bits off a defence. My team Borat, Dicky, Jos, Japan guy, Clyde, Davis, Chappers, Spider or Lala, Ramy, Lambert, Malulu

refreshing honesy from Brendan Rogers saying Liverpools defence were lazy, and they cant keep having to score 3 or 5 goals to win a game.
Or a realisation that he made selection and tactical errors and is starting to feel the pressure. Rodgers has had a pop at the FA, referees and now his own players since he's taken over at Liverpool. He's trying to do what Ferguson Snr. does but lacks the 19 titles to back up his opinions.

Say what you want about Nigel but he never blames a third party for his own mistakes and remains upbeat and positive even when others are faltering. I admire that.

On a different subject, have you seen that Michael Appleton is not happy with the FA because they wouldn't let him cancel the home game against Crewe next week.

He wanted to cancel it because they have one international player away and another on standby, so one player or possibly two not available!

How many times do they want to bend the rules?

They surely can't afford international players anyway... Surely that money should be used to pay the tax!!

To be fair, if we keep progressing up the leagues until after we've won the Champions League, the World Cup and then end up playing in an intergallactic space league when we're getting stuffed each week by 20ft tall aliens with nine legs then he will be able to point back to this post and say he was the first to warn us that NC and NA might be out of their depth. He told us YEARS ago. And as he sits alone wheezing his last in a secure unit, that will make it all worth it.

Of course no one will know how Saints would have done had AP not been sacked or how much better they may have done, if they had strengthened last January, they may have even won the Championship last season instead of falling away near the end.
In his scrapbook of my quotes Velleity may also turn up my view that NA could well become the most successful manager Saints have ever had but in my opinion until he finds his feet in the PL he needs support from a coach with PL experience.
The Geordies seem to agree with my view of AP, giving him an 8 year contract, perhaps NC will do the same for NA, for all the Saints fans to see, thus backing him to the hilt and showing his tremendous confidence in NA,during these difficult times ---- but I wouldn't bet on it.

second option is to revert to 4-4-2
sometimes think Adkins is trying to adjust to the premier league a little too much. Don't get me wrong, I know he knows better than I or any of us, what he's doing; just sometimes think we should stick with what we used to destroy every team last year!

Thoughts?

Why doesn't NC show the same faith in Nigel that the Geordies have done in AP and grant him an 8 year contract.
After two promos in successive years NC could have easily put his arm round Nigel's shoulder and tell him your'e here for keeps kid --- here's your contract to confirm it.
He didn't and why not ? because if
(and it may now be getting very close to when, in NC's mind) he sacks Nigel he would have to stump up 8 years of NA's contract instead of the 10 months left on his present one.
Which Club, Magpies or Saints has shown most confidence in their manager?
In my book if you want loyalty you have to first show it.
I think NC may be warming up for the sacking by dumping the programme sellers.

the skate boorer, you still havent answered my question about what qualifications you have! whats the problem? you claim to have great intellegence, so why not answer a simple question? i know being able to count to 14 using just your fingers looks clever compared to the usual 12 in skateland, but its not! it just means your more inbred.

i have a second question for you;
do you know the difference between a Paedophile and a Pediatrician?

So, Theborebore is off the "Puncheon at Everton"/"Hoddle for manager"/"Not enough signings in transfer window" rants. How many times will we hear the all-new "why no 8 year contract" argument repeated?

I predict 50 repeats minimum.

Oh, by the way, you are factually incorrect, despite your massive intellect. NA was given a long-term contract when Saints were promoted to the Championship.

May 2011 plus four and a half years = November 2015

If you were a Southampton fan, you'd remember that Adkins dorted out a long-term deal only after promotion.

Interesting,4-4-2 is so adaptable that it is in fact 4-3-3 when a midfielder pushes on,its just the ability to change shape when not in control that we seem to have a problem with,in reality it should switch to 4-5 -1 to win the ball back . But it takes bags of energy and a leader on the pitch and in my humble opinion thats what were lacking,I thought Davis was the kiddy but we need another jimmy case to set the tempo and attitude when we lose the ball. Its all very well going for the obvious culprits, the keeper or the CB,s but defending starts from the front.
Im praying for a clean sheet or at least an indication that we have the ability to win the ball back in midfield.
Is Boruc vocal ? perhaps thats what we need, did you see the utube clip of him throttling naismith ,for not shouldering his responsibility to the back line-loved it.

I am big enough to admit that I got it wrong about the length of NA's contract.
On the day the new contract was announced I must have been reading something much more important in the Beano or was it the Dandy?
It seems as if NC will have to cough up more when he sacks NA, I'm really pleased about that for Nigel's sake.
Maybe that's why weasel NC has sacked the programme sellers, the money he's saved can go towards Nigel's payoff.
Anyone who sacks people who have worked 25 years for a company, by text with no notice, is a scumbag.

Oh Thomasupton/Tebourba
, you really ought to research our club before you come on here trying to wind us up. You'll always be found out as you're just not tuned in enough.

Your double sign on has been outed on another thread, so why not just do the decent thing and get a third identity? We'll soon spot you and welcome you back with open arms.

I'm kinda flattered that Velleity has hung on to my words of wisdom, he has certainly gone up in my estimation.
I don't claim superior knowledge, I once thought I made a mistake but I was wrong!
