Rangers chief exec Charles Green says big teams can't keep subsidising likes of Saints
11:53am Friday 12th October 2012 in Saints News
Charles Green (Graham Stuart/PA Wire)
Rangers chief executive Charles Green believes the creation of a European super league is inevitable “because big teams can’t keep subsidising small teams like Southampton”.
The Ibrox chief made the comments as the club unveiled plans for admission to the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.
Rangers, who were demoted to the Scottish third division in the summer after being resurrected from financial ruin, are hoping to raise £20m from the move.
Despite their spectacular fall from grace, Green believes the club would receive an invite into any new breakaway European league.
And he is adamant that one will eventually be formed.
“There will be a European league because big teams can’t keep subsidising small teams like Southampton for the next 10 years because they will go stale.
“Arsenal don’t want to play Southampton or Swansea, but ask them if they want to play Celtic or Rangers. It’s what the fans want to see.
“Fans across the world want to see Manchester United play Barcelona, not just once every few years but every season.
“If there are two divisions of 18 clubs, how could Rangers not be a part of that?
“I’m convinced it will happen because otherwise where will the revenues for the top come from?
“These days Arsenal are struggling to sell out their game against West Ham.
“How can Manchester United’s revenues be £320million and Aston Villa, who are completely useless, get £250m?
“It all comes from Sky and it’s not decided by what a club puts in.
“What Manchester United put into world football is massive, but what they take out of it is a joke and they won’t put up with that for much longer.”

They would of course favor a European Super League when they maintain the delusion that they would be included, I would however argue that nearly all 20 Premier League clubs (with the exception of Wigan who NEVER sell their ground out) would have more merit to be included than the Glasgow clubs. In no way, unless for reasons of representation across Europe, would Celtic, let alone Rangers, be up in a list of the top 36 clubs.
I also think this is a totally pointless comment as a European super league would kill all that is great about English Football. We'd never let it happen.
Pipe down Green, keep your eyes on that next exciting home game to Queens Park!

Well we already have the megarich players living off TV money admittedly, but football in Britain is and always has been a pyramid structure with the Premier League and the SPL at the top. And just as Saints and Norwich have shown in the last couple of years, teams from the lower leagues can make it to the higher echelons.
The Champions League is the competition that allows the top teams from each country to play a variety of teams from across Europe. If the Cortese plan comes off, Saints could be there in a couple of years. That has to be the (theoretical) dream of every team, why does that need to be replaced by the American model?

The point he is missing is that Arsenal, Man U and City don't want to be playing Ranges instead of Wigan and Norwich, they want to be in a super league that consists of Madrid, Milan and Barcelona. If such a league were to exist, would there be room for a Scottish Club? Maybe for one perhaps and it would be the one wearing hoops!
Rangers are more likely to be involved in a break away league with their Swedish, Latvian and Estonian counterparts.....so good luck Green, you're only likely to become more marginalised!

Pertinent facts being,at the moment Rangers home attendance is averaging around 48k whilst Southampton's is about the 28 k mark. One would expect more from a Club which is currently playing in one of the top Leagues in the World.
Rangers are, as several people have already said, are playing at the lowest level in Scottish Pro. football yet can still attract almost double of SFC's.
Mr. Green has therefore a very marketable commodity, especially when the hundred's of RFC Supporters' Clubs throughout the World are added, something the likes of Clubs like Southampton FC can only dream of

Then the prima donnas can have 5 years reselling the game to Asian TV - the fans of those clubs would end up going down the road to Wigan or Tranmere or Orient. Good luck to them. We asre such a drain on those big clubs aren't we. They fill our stadiums and pay our wages.
How are they subsiding us?? They are in financial disarray whereas we are one of the most financially secure clubs around at the moment. As far as I'm concerned if they all want to f*ck off and form a super league I would be more than happy for them to, personally I go to watch Saints not the opposition. We might lose 10k on the gate if this happened but so be it, if 'fans' are only there because we are in the Premier League now then I'd be more than happy for them to go as well.
Oh get real - here is one CEO trying hard to create a new market that their company can participate in.
The franchise idea - sadly I think it will come - once enough foreign owners are in the prem they will all vote for it. No relegation, just a nice little cash cow. But will I be interested? Not me - fan for 42 years since my first game. But I am not going to have the P taken out of me.
Anyway - it's Rangers we are talking about here - I mean Rangers?

I don't doubt that a European league will emerge one day. But I think it will be an overpriced, over televised monster that is completely removed from the reality of the real spine of football. i.e Local Clubs, football in parks, Sunday leagues !!
.. and when that super league arrives ..... Rangers sure as hell won't be in it.
Like that Braveheart bloke with the bad blue eyeliner, he'll end up with his head on a spike.
He mentioned Swansea too ... and what have Saints ands Swansea got in common? We are both PREMIER LEAGUE .... the finest league in the world, not some highland subbuteo league where the annual turnover trebles if half the crowd buy crisps with their half time haggis.

While I understand your natural resentment at the carpetbagger's dismissive remarks, I take issue with your arrogant dismissal of Scottish football.
Do you honestly think Southampton would have negotiated qualification into the CL group stages? I ask that question, because I firmly believe that in a competitive fixture, Celtic would beat the majority of clubs in the EPL, and certainly give the big four a game of it - lest you forget, Celtic won the head-to-head against the English champions six years ago... and didn't Hearts (not even in the top half of the SPL) only lose to Liverpool thanks to a late o.g. in the first leg?
By all means, express your anger at Green (he's from Yorkshire, btw - ask Sheffield United fans about him), but don't denigrate what you haven't seen. The fact that your club signs players of the questionable ability of Steven Davis and Jos 'Bombscare' Hooiveld says more about your club's status and ambition than league position ever will; however, in Danny Fox and Artur Boruc you have signed two quality players, particularly AB.
As for the jibe about Middlesbrough, look who manages them; we are WELL shot of him.

He's chairman of a newly created club that didn't exist 6 months who are laying claim to the history of a team with a similar name that went bust during the summer (or more accurately claiming the right to milk that now defunct team's fans for all he can)....you'd think that he'd want to win as many allies as possibly rather than insulting teams with proper history who have actually earned their position in the league they play in.
It seems like it's par for the course for him though....he's done nothing but insult the rest of Scottish football since he arrived on the scene even though the SFA, SPL & SFL have bent over backwards to try and create a space for them in Scottish football. Far from being victimised as he states they have actually been done a huge favour by Scottish footbal as a strict application of the laws would have required them to operate in non-league footbal for three years and present a full set of accounts for that period before being allowed to apply for inclusion in the bottom tier of the SFL if there was a vacancy.
Anyhoo, please don't judge Scottish footbal by this nutjob's ramblings - he's just a scavenger from Doncaster who saw an opportunity to make a quick buck buying the carcass of a dead club that he had no previous connection with.

ch, but couldn't give a stuff about them playing some unknown European team in yet another Champions League game.
I have no doubt that the big boys will try it again some time, but we should go to the mattresses to prevent it, and I will give up football if we lose.
But if they do set it up, they will invite Rangers as the whole thing will be about money, just as I suspect they will create a Dublin team with foreign mercenaries.

Our Team today consists mainly of young lads, journeymen, and 2 or 3 old pros who are past their best.
Having said that, they played the Team who were currently at the top of the Premier League only 2 weeks ago, Motherwell, and beat them fairly easily.
Compared to this time last year when Jelavic, Naismith, McGregor, Davies, all proven internationalists, were available, the team is a mere shadow of it's former self.
Add to that, the SFA did not allow the Club to even play pre-season friendlies in order to break in all the new players.
The SFA has also, illegally I may add, imposed a 2 year transfer ban as well as witholding prize money won fair and square from last season.
Mr. Green and the Club have been uhfairly pilloried continuously now for many months.
People seem to have overlooked the fact that nothing has been proved against RFC and yet we are portrayed as something akin to the anti-christ.
The EBT scheme referred to in the "tax-case" is merely similar to the same one used by many English Clubs, the BBC and many other large businesses.
Rangers enjoy a massive world wide support.
That support has given Mr. Green the confidence to move forward his plans for Rangers.
There is no doubt Mr. Green is bullish, because if he hadn't, the Celtic run SFA would have crushed the Club and put the final nail in the coffin of the already failing Scottish football.

It is a fact that most clubs in the SPL operate on tight budgets; however if SKY were to divert the money it takes from Scottish subscribers back into the Scottish game, it might a different story. IMO, it's a disgrace that failure - i.e. relegation from the EPL - is rewarded with a £30m 'parachute.
As for the proclamation that the EPL is 'the best in Europe': do any of you watch La Liga or the Bundesliga? Your champions got taken apart by the Borussia Dortmund within the last fortnight; only the goalkeeper saved them from a hiding.

Good luck for the rest of the season.

But honestly,do Rangers really need this kind of publicity at the moment ?
One poster has already pointed out that it is hardly suprising the rangers have a large fanbase, what choice do scottish supporters have ? How many people live in Glasgow(great city) compared to Arbroath ?
It takes a bit more than that for Rangers to declare "big club" status now.
And anyway Mr Green, feel free to meet Mr Cortese and discuss your small club theory.
Were aware we are a club on the rise, striving to build a secure base for the future,it will take time and were succeeding ,are you ?.

Would like to correct a few points above, though -
"The SFA did not allow the Club to even play pre-season friendlies in order to break in all the new players"
Nope. As a new club rangers had no membership of a Football Association. Fifa regs therefore prevented them from playing games and charging punters. Rangers were free to play closed door games.
"The SFA has also, illegally I may add, imposed a 2 year transfer ban"
Nope. The transfer ban imposed by the SPL was ultra vires (outwith their powers). Not illegal. The SFA regs give them the power to set any conditions they like when awarding membership. Not illegal or ultra vires.
"As well as witholding prize money won fair and square from last season."
Nope. That money belonged to the soon-to-be-liquidate
d oldco, and therefore to its creditors. Do you think it's fair that Rangers can walk away from £134million of debt, and tell the creditors you're transferring last years prize money to a new company. Seriously?
"Mr. Green and the Club have been uhfairly pilloried continuously now for many months."
£134million. Fairly pilloried, I'd say.
"People seem to have overlooked the fact that nothing has been proved against RFC."
Nope. You do understand that the upcoming tax tribunal is an APPEAL? Which means rangers have been found guilty, but are disagreeing with the tax assessment.
The EBT scheme referred to in the "tax-case" is merely similar to the same one used by many English Clubs, the BBC and many other large businesses.
Nope. Rangers are accused of using EBTs in lieu of contractual payments, which is illegal. EBTs must be discretionary to be legal. The side-letters which have come to light recently prove this.
Hope that helps.

Since he bought Rangers assets, Charles Green has caused nothing but controversy. Every day there is a report in our newspapers and on radio about his views. No one outside Newco even cares what he thinks. We all laugh at him up here.
He has a poor team, in a poor league with no success, titles or any club history. Judging by his comments he is still trying to pass this off as the Old "glorious" Rangers and if that is the case then they are due creditors £135M , £100m of that belonging to the public purse.

The perfect example of that is the SPL.
Money has gravitated to two clubs to the point that Celtic where worried about the finacial effect of losing competition with Rangers
Long since gone are the days where Aberdeen grace the European stage
Saints came a narrow second to Liverpool once upton a time. The chances of that happening are tbh slim. I find myself hoping that Everton or Spurs break into the top 5 for a change.
Let them have a European "Super League" for all I care. I dont buy sky and wont go to any of the matches because im not from Manchester,London or Barcalona.

They are still Rangers and your biggest nemesis and you need them. Forget about the business bolllocks, look at the fans still turning up each week for their fixtures.
It’s a similar scenario to our Skunt neighbours Portsmouth. Admittedly they can’t pack their park but they too could be liquidised any time soon. They may then go under another name for business reasons, but their fans will remain the same. The Blue Few as they are known in Hampshire

Hi; I'm a Celtic fan. Good luck for the rest of the season.
If I were the owner of Man City, I would definitely think that I wasn't getting bang for my buck with that kind of performance.

City struggling in one game isn't really indicative of the quality of European leagues in general.
P.S. Sky broadcast whatever reaps the best viewing figures for their advertisers. I think it is safe to assume that the large payments made to EPL clubs relies on the ability to negotiate based on those figures.

The teacher looks at the girl with surprise and says: "Mary, why didn't you raise your hand?"
"Because I'm not a Gers fan," she replied.
The teacher, still shocked, asked: "Well if you're not a Gers fan, then who are you a fan of?"
"I'm a Southampton fan, and proud of it," Mary replied.
The teacher could not believe her ears.
"Mary, why, pray tell, are you a Southampton fan?"
"Because my mum and dad are from Southampton, and my mum is a Southampton fan and my dad is a Southampton fan, so I'm a Southampton fan too!"
"Well," said the teacher, in an annoyed tone, "that's no reason for you to be a Southampton fan. You don't have to be just like your parents all the time. What if your mum was a prostitute and you dad was a drug dealer and car thief, what would you be then?"
"Then," Mary smiled, "I'd be a Gers fan!

Many of the previous respondents either have a closed mind or are ignorant of several facts.

All the while Celtic get richer (well done them qualifying for the Champions League - I mean that) able to build their squad and profile and financial clout, the world forgets about your "big club" so you rail against it by shouting loud, stamping your feet trying to get rules changed, keep yourself noticed.
Sorry mate you saw a bargain (I believe you paid £5m? what do they say about a fool and money?) and that aint the pot of gold you thought it was hence the cap in hand to the fans because you realise you need more as yor team isn't as good as you thought and you need to invest.

There’s no shortage of takers on here that express the opinion that neither team has any real competition, myself included. You are entitled to your opinions but I think Steven Davis is a very good player, Danny Fox not so much! You may have opened a can of worms there. Can't say I agree with your Celtic in the premier league theory either. Very rare European cup ties between Scottish and English sides and the hype and pressure they evoke are a great leveller. I can't believe you use your European exploits to prove this point when Scottish sides are generally so abysmal in Europe even against some very small teams. I'd like to see Celtic in the Premier league, why not, we accommodate welsh teams, have done for decades. Then we could really see how our respective club football measures up. Good luck to you too.
Hi; I'm a Celtic fan. While I understand your natural resentment at the carpetbagger's dismissive remarks, I take issue with your arrogant dismissal of Scottish football. The deliberate confusion over names will give you a taste for a man who needs to obfuscate and confuse. It's even caught the Echo out. Rangers were not 'demoted'. They ceased to be an SPL club because they had a ground but no team and were therefore dead. The company originally known as Sevco 5088 then got into the SFL in contravention of most of the League's rules, and changed its name, leaving us with the current unhealthy situation.
It was Saints Mr Green insulted, but it could have been any club - as his need is to pile rhetoric upon nonsense so that the Rangers fans won't know whether it's New York or New Year.
I support both Celtic and Saints and will not change that position this side of the day of Judgement. And don't be fooled into thinking that both teams are sectarian. Only one club was reinvented in the 1890s as a specifically anti-Catholic, anti-Irish institution. On a night when we remember Celtic and Scotland's greatest manager - the protestant Jock Stein - don't let Mr Green wind any Saint up. As the Mafia might say: it's just business.

Please people realise that Green is a Yorshireman and Not a Scotsman. We up here in Scotland are just as angry at his comments than people south of the border. This in no way represents the general thought of anyone outside Rangers Newco.
I completely refute the accusation of being naive. Afterall we up here have seen first hand exactly what Rangers have been through. The only ones at fault for Rangers predicament is Rangers. Yes they have a massive crowd etc but they bring nothing but shame to oiur game and i quite frankly would love for them to leave and join a super league.
We were warned of a doomsday scenario if Rangers didnt get back in the SPL and yet that hasnt happened. We are all coping very well . We dont need Rangers in Scotland and they **** well know it. The Old Firm dominated us for years and created a duopoly. Now this gives other teams a chance for success and a crack at wiinning the league and in turn making some money.
rangers have been completely isolated since this happened and they want to punish everyone for it. They deserved to dissapear off the face of the earth but they still exist. In their existance they will be hell bent on taking down anyone along the way. Greens comments on Saints is another ploy to get his fickle followers to spend money on his share issue and in return he will TRY get them into a superleague. Its all sad really!
As for doomsday scenarios, we will see.
How many clubs fold due to the fall out will be evident by the end of the season and not by the first few weeks.

Hi; I'm a Celtic fan. While I understand your natural resentment at the carpetbagger's dismissive remarks, I take issue with your arrogant dismissal of Scottish football. Good luck for the rest of the season.
City struggling in one game isn't really indicative of the quality of European leagues in general.
P.S. Sky broadcast whatever reaps the best viewing figures for their advertisers. I think it is safe to assume that the large payments made to EPL clubs relies on the ability to negotiate based on those figures.
Abramovich has now proved that personal wealth can buy the CL title, provided you can wait long enough. I just hope that Platini's Financial Fair Play rules deliver their intended kick in the stones to 'Sugar Daddy' teams and those with disproportionate debt... i.e. most of the EPL and the teams from the former Soviet bloc funded by post 1989 'entrepeneurs'.
I've always had a fondness for Southampton because of their attitude to playing the game. I think you've got a decent manager in Adkins. It's ironic that Strachan - I love his 'gallusness' - took Celtic to 210 minutes over two legs against the eventual winners of the CL in 2007.
As for SKY, IMO they divert subscriptions from other countries - not to mention other packages - to privatise the broadcasting rights of sports events without regard for the average fan or the development of sport. In case you hadn't noticed, I hate Rupert Murdoch: more than I hated what Rangers (RIP) stood for and silently encouraged, but less than I despise the Tories.

Except your crappy wee club won't be in the Premier if we decided to honour it with our presence.......
I personally wish that more fans in Scotland would follow their local sides - FWIW, Celtic were founded in my primary school hall, so I was kinda destined to support them.
I want a stronger and more competitive league in Scotland; the fact it has not been so since the mid-1980's is solely down to the now defunct Rangers FC and their underhand financial practices. Not only were they guilty of tax evasion, but they cheated every other team in Scotland by purchasing players they could not possibly have afforded had they relied solely on their income stream... financial 'doping', if you will.

This has to be a prime candidate for the next one of those TV specials "Fifty Greatest ****ing idiots in charge of third division jock football teams" ....
How often could fans could travel to away games if a euro league were to be formed.
True fans support their local teams and watch them, not bigger clubs.
Set up a European league let the big boys sod off and when it goes tits up don't let them back in.

Confucious is spot on - Scotland is a net contributor, given the natural resources in territories - the same as any independent nation state would enjoy.
Seedhouse (did you really call someone else "You arrogant tw@t"?) - why would the English have any say in a referendum on the self-determination of another country's citizens? In the last throes of British empire even the Colonel Blimps didn't insist on that.
I have always despised Rangers as a club, as someone who grew up in Scotland in the 60s and 70s when they still refused to sign Catholics, treated the Ibrox disaster victims' families shamefully despite damning evidence of cover-up and negligence, and had a supine press, SFA and referees in their pocket.
But Rangers and Celtic are massive clubs, certainly in the UK's top five, if the got the Premiership money. In sheer passion, volume, and rivalry the Old Firm derbies have no equal anywhere in the world, because no other rivalry - even Real and Barca - cuts alongs sectarian lines like they do.
The slight to Saints wasn't personal, it was just the boasts of a once great club in straitened times.
One other thing. Why can't you Southerners pronounce your "r"s and speak the Queen's English like the Scots and the Northern English?

There are pompous little men from all districts including Yorkshire and my point was that he is trying to appear as if he on some high ground podium when in fact he is is knee high to a match box as things stand today.
That can change I suppose but I really doubt we will ever see Rangers in a European super league. I would expect tradition and maybe some wealthy entrepreneurs to one day see Rangers back in the SPL. They have a strong supporter franchise and a lot of history. That in itself won't do it though. It takes money. And the lack of it is what put them where they are now. When that changes then we'll see.

This is a master stroke by Cameron. He knows they will lose. He woant want to be the PM that lost Scotland. He knows it won't happen. So he gets the popular vote for allowing it to happen and the comfort of knowing its no problem.
There's more at stake here than Scottish independence. Labour traditionally have big support in Scotland. If they get independence Labours chances in future elections will be significantly reduced. So they will hardly throw their support into a yes vote.
The Scottish people are a passionate bunch, but they are not stupid. Their prosperity and well being will always guide them over the the fanatics who parade around waving flags and demanding they be allowed to rule themselves. The nearer we get to the election the more they will be looking at Greece, Portugal and all the other dominos waiting to fall. They will not want to be in that queue.
.. and getting back on thread. Green is still a pompous little man.
