Matthew Le Tissier lashes out at Saints executive chairman Nicola Cortese
8:00am Thursday 18th October 2012 in Saints News
Matthew Le Tissier has hit out at Saints chairman Nicola Cortese but has promised their ongoing feud will not detract from his support of the team.
There has long been tension between the St Mary’s chairman and the man who supporters last year voted as the club’s greatest ever player.
Cortese played an integral role in the now-deceased Markus Liebherr's takeover of the debt-ridden south coast club in 2009 – a time in which Le Tissier was part of a rival bid by the Pinnacle Group.
The 44-year-old did not pinpoint that as the reason for the pair's strained relationship but made his feelings on Cortese abundantly clear.
“I suppose the only real story will probably come out when he leaves the football club,” he claimed to Press Association Sport.
“He is not a very nice human being. It's as simple as that.
“When it's not quite going so well and the spotlight starts falling on other areas of the football pitch, then that's when he'll come under a little bit of pressure.”
Le Tissier was speaking at the Tullow Oil Golf Day, which is aimed at raising more than £150,000 for CLIC Sargent – the UK's leading cancer charity for children and young people.
No-one at Saints was available for comment when contacted by Press Association Sport.

This should be an interesting comment bit. For the record i'm not on either side with regards to the argument Tiss is a legend but you cannot fault the job Nicola has done thus far with the club.

But....
Le Tiss is part of our history. Cortese is our now and the key to our near future. While it would be 'nice' if he were a very nice human being I am more interested in him being a very effective Chairman who will continue to take our club forward. If being a ruthless hard-as-nails mafia **** helps him to do that then I'm all for it.

People in the public eye shouldn't air their dirty laundry in public, especially when it could have an affect on how the fans act towards the club.
The last thing we need is negativity in the ground - it will affect players and results, guaranteed.
Silly Matt, go sit in the corner and think about what you've done.

No smoke without fire, but all successful businessmen have to have a ruthless streak and if this gives the club some sort of success then all will be good.
MLT is entitled to his opinion and to be fair he is probably spot on.

Cortese is an out of control autocratic nutjob. A horrible sad vindictive control freak.
I dont see why Matt shouldnt comment considering the grief Cortese has directed at him and his friends. Maybe some of the happy clapper fans will realise exactly what Cortese is like.
Whose the manager these days anyway ? Cortese or Adkins
Whose responsible for what players he wants to bring in ? Cortese or Adkins
Why did Cortese decide Sharp wasnt part of this seasons plans ?
Is it right that 'all' Cortese's personal bills are paid by SFC ?
Why are sunseeker a sponsor ? :)
Im more than amazed that Adkins can work with Cortese.

If he has a real issue which he thinks is affecting the club, then he should give the full story in an attempt to bring about change, not just have a little dig without explanation - don't you agree?
Also, one other related point: I don't know much about Markus, but from everything I've read in the past it seems that he was a genuine, principled, ethical businessman - I can't see why someone like that would willingly and actively entrust his finances and the running of one of his businesses to 'not a very nice human being'. Markus obviously trusted NC's business sense and ethics, so perhaps there's always two sides to every story?

To be honest with all the associated issues of running a football club i'm sure you have to be a b*****d sometimes.
However LeTiss comment is probably accurate based on two recent issues:
1.Ticket pricing this season for children in parts of the stadium.
2.Treatment of pogramme sellers and the programme shop outlet.

Cortese is doing a good job running the club, however I have also heard some rumors, that some other people employed including the academy staff are not very popular and it is not necessarily a very happy ship despite our now financial solid foundations! No matter what though, i will always support my team. 3 points this weekend please!
However so does Cortese.
This decision was made to end the 'freebies' that were going out to

Unlike many very charming people, Nicola doesn't seem to have the one fault they often conceal - a total dependence on the gushing appreciation of others.
An effective chairman makes me happy - a nice one is neither here nor there to me.

I wish Matt had given some detail as to his obvious dislike of NC. However I suspect there is a great deal of truth behind his comments. NC may be an experienced businessman but lets not forget that it was MARCUS who saved our Club. I am not sure that even he would approve of some of the changes that have taken place since his death. The Club in my view is not the family friendly club it was before NC arrived. Too little appreciation of the bread and butter of any club - its supporters. Too much emphasis on the Corporates. Still thats business. And is he running the Club that well? We started this all important season totally unprepared after months of dithering over who might or might not join us. Finally bought a motley collection of players and have yet to field a settled side. Hence we are in a precarious situation with no way out until January and relegation looking a distinct possibility. And why the veil of secrecy over the Club. Are the supporters not entitled to know what goes on and not rely on speculation from the Echo?
As for our precarious position after 7 games and 3 of those against the top 3 teams in the country and 1 against a team who have had their best start to a league campaign, we are where most punters would of said we would be after the teams we have faced.
Also our motley collection of players! £30million worth of cr@p? one of the most exciting players out of Europe and an International, Golden boot winner from the last ACN and an International, England under 21 right back, one of the best strikers in the Championship last year and another International defender, just cant please some people.

I think Le Tiss is still upset that a lot of his mates from his glory days at Saints have been kicked off the Southampton gravy train, and they probably weren't done so in a particularly ceremonious way. Cortese wanted a clean break from past pratices and brought in a new era without free tickets and free bars for past players and this has left a bit of a sour taste.

Le Tiss is a Saints legend. A great player, a genius on the pitch. Without him our descent to the lower leagues would have occurred much much sooner. However, he has his own personal flaws.
But....
Le Tiss is part of our history. Cortese is our now and the key to our near future. While it would be 'nice' if he were a very nice human being I am more interested in him being a very effective Chairman who will continue to take our club forward. Unfortunately he's not that hard, francis benali did have him up against a wall in tears for trashing his house when he rented it....

Speak to almost ANY member of the staff at St Mary's, and they will have stories about Cortese and how, as Matt puts it, "He is not a very nice human being. It's as simple as that."
I know several members of staff, including those involved with the playing staff, and they have all said something along the same lines.
He may have been involved in saving Saints, As with Rupert Lowe, he is getting too involved in the playing side, and it will go wrong somewhere for someone.
Both Cortese and Lowe are excellent at running a business - No-one can deny that.
Rupert got burnt because he didn't understand how to run a football club within the 'business', and tried to get involved in the playing side.
Other than that, from what I hear from my friends at SMS, he was actually a decent bloke - just a bit of a wally.
I don't hear anything like those compliments when they mention Cortese.

Matt either needs to tell the whole story or just shut up. Revealing the truth, from his perspective, will at least allow the general public to understand why he is so often quoted as making this type of comment.
But then he may also think that revealing the truth would show him in bad light, hence his all to often snide comments.
If, as others suggest, the anger relates to the renting and "trashing" of a co-joined property, I would assume financial recompense was sought and received, and in all probability, a confidential clause inserted into the agreement, stopping full disclosure. The Club was really fortunate to have ML & NC succeed not only with the takeover but with two successive promotions.
Running a successful business and being a great player are two separate functions.and MLT would be far better to keep his opinions to himsel.f Unfortunately his comments take away the great memories so many of us remember rather than stirring it up and losing some of the respect we all have many for his playing ability . It almost sounds vindictive as the current Management could not have achieved more than has been accomplished over the past 4 years.

I try and hold a balanced view in life.
Was NC instrumental in saving our club from oblivion? Without a doubt. Has he made much needed changes? Many.
I have never met him. I do know several people who report/reported directly to him and several senior business people who have had dealings with him. It is true to say that none speak well of him. What surprises me is that the criticism is all the same - that he is indecisive, changes his mind and denies previous statements/agreement
s. This is the exact opposite to what I would have expected from his image as 'The Don".
On balance I am pro NC and do worry that if he left the Liebherrs would quickly follow. However, I look at Pompey and say how obvious their demise was, yet none questioned at the time. The whole horrible Jimmy Savile thing now looks so blatent it's unbelievable, but no one questioned, at least not in a meaningful way.
It is right to question. Questioning reveals both good and bad things before it's too late.

I have never met with either Le Tissier nor Cortese so I can't comment on their 'niceness' and nor do I care. A successful and sustainable football club to support is my interest. In the context of Southampton Football Club the business abilities of both men is so publicly available you don't need to meet them to understand them. Cortese is experienced and successful and has brought us huge entertainment and undreamed of success. With no experience whatever but with a clearly huge amount of gullability and nativity Le Tissier would have taken us to the sort of farcical and bankrupt depths that Pompey currently enjoy in no time flat. Cortese is the right man for this club at this time.
One last thought. Just because you 've been a loyal servant of your employer for 17 years doesn't give you the right to privileged position and regular freebies. It rarely happens in any other form of employment so why in football? Le Tissier got hugely well paid to do his job and on the back of that continues to be well paid - on all counts way above what fans get paid. I'm a loyal fan of the club of 45 years service. It's cost me a fortune and from the likes of me Le Tissier earned a fortune. I'm still paying - so can he!

Nothing to hear or see here, move on.
Even the people alleged to have reason to 'say' something actually 'say' very little, and the others, well, they're the 'no smoke without fire' merchants who would be better employed investigating the carp on Eastenders-if only for background information for our visit to the Boleyn.
Roll on Upton PARK, stay with tradition please. What type of 3rd rate Parkie are you calling it the Boleyn?

I think Le Tiss is still upset that a lot of his mates from his glory days at Saints have been kicked off the Southampton gravy train, and they probably weren't done so in a particularly ceremonious way. Cortese wanted a clean break from past pratices and brought in a new era without free tickets and free bars for past players and this has left a bit of a sour taste.
You can argue about whether he went too far with this, but something had to be done to send out a signal that things were going to be different. We couldn't carry on leaching money like we did under previous regimes.

As a business exec myself I can tell you- Cortese simply acts like an astute business man!
So when they come up against "Football Players" they will often come off brash, harsh and so on.
But I can tell you firsthand- we are far better having him run the club than most.
The problem with so much of football is that its run by footballers.
Men with true leadership skills will take us forward. Obviously I am not saying they shouldn't have a "love for the club" but I believe that Markus and Nicola started that way and Nicola will continue it!
So "yes," Matt is entitled to his opinion, but it would be better for the morale of the club to not "Smear" the chairman from his armchair.
Nicola is a leaders leader- he is the first man in a long time who is working on building every part of this club!

It's perfectly true and very logical, yet not even worthy of consideration.
The difference between me (and most others) and the wonderful, loyal, brilliant hero that Matt the footballer will always be to me, is that I expect nothing for what I continue to give to the club.
Don't get me started on 'Matt saved us from relegation year after year ....... blah blah blah!' I'm referring to accountability. If someone isn't accountable or controls the whole think secretively then you can end up in a right royal mess - Nick Lesson brought down Barings Bank because he controlled the front office and the back office and therefore he 'monitored' or was accountable to himself and no one picked up on the situation until it was way too late.
Yes NC has handled a few things badly, but often the decision making process was logical, it was the implimentation that ruffled feathers creating enemies and that can be damaging to him and the club. It has also led to a number of scurrilous accusations aimed at him which I'm sure are without any foundation - but if you cloak everything in a veil of secrecy that's what happens.

I wish he would engage with the local community more. He could invite one or two senior business people as his guests from time to time, that might help with sales of boxes. He could attend the odd event run to support charities etc where all the local business leaders tend to gather. He could wander into his corporate suites occasionally to see how customers are doing.
He used to have dinner with a few fans draw from 'the hat' every now and then. I thought that was a great idea and certainly the majority of feedback from those attending was positive. I haven't heard of one of these for a very long time - does anyone know different?

I think Le Tiss is still upset that a lot of his mates from his glory days at Saints have been kicked off the Southampton gravy train, and they probably weren't done so in a particularly ceremonious way. Cortese wanted a clean break from past pratices and brought in a new era without free tickets and free bars for past players and this has left a bit of a sour taste.
You can argue about whether he went too far with this, but something had to be done to send out a signal that things were going to be different. We couldn't carry on leaching money like we did under previous regimes.

If rumor has it that le Tiss has to pay and watch the team at St Mary's, this I think is wrong, after all unlike most modern day players he was 100% loyal and a massive asset to our club over many years. Cortese is doing a good job running the club, however I have also heard some rumors, that some other people employed including the academy staff are not very popular and it is not necessarily a very happy ship despite our now financial solid foundations! No matter what though, i will always support my team. 3 points this weekend please!
Strange how, when a player who was idolised when playing, gets criticised by those who idolised him when he hangs up his boots.
Matt has showed Loyalty to the club over a number of years.
What a shame that he is begrudged a free seat now.
Please can you replace the word MATT with the words STRASBOURG SAINT and repeat that sentence to yourself several times in a mirror.
It's perfectly true and very logical, yet not even worthy of consideration.
The difference between me (and most others) and the wonderful, loyal, brilliant hero that Matt the footballer will always be to me, is that I expect nothing for what I continue to give to the club.
Don't get me started on 'Matt saved us from relegation year after year ....... blah blah blah!' He was instrumental in us being where we were then, are now and will be tomorrow as were, are and will be many others, players and others. The club owes us all one thing ..... 'a big thank you for our support'. Nothing more, nothing less.
Oh, and it's 'shown' (past participle after HAVE/HAS in the present perfect), not 'showed' (past simple).
But all this is completely spoiled when one is caused by you to wonder what parts of all this giggle/giggled/giggl
er/gigglingstuff are past and present participles - and then consider all the simple participles and any potentially perfect ones to boot.
I will always be grateful to you Stras for putting me right for all time on the less/fewer thing, but come on mate, lay off the participles.
If, like me, you had ever been treated for a painful dangling participle, I think you'd be fewer likely to keep going on about them now.

He is certainly not doing himself any favours in the way he's handling some things. Perhaps he should acquire a PR rep or sack the one he has, if indeed he has one. It may be that his people skills are just not his forte. On the other hand it could be the pressure of running the business in the public eye, certainly not easy when you know every decision you take is likely to be questioned, especally given the fact that he comes from a secretive working environment.
All I know is he is producing the results, he is talking the talk and walking the walk at the present time. His interview in the Telegraph earlier in the year demonstrated his passion and ambition for the club. If he succeeds then glory awaits us al!!!
It is not for me to tell him how to run his business and I would't expect him to tell me how to run mine.

The trouble is that Mr Le Tissier has a BIG MOUTH and it runs away with him.
OK Mr Le Tissier has done good for the club, but got paid to do that, that was his job, it don't give him the right to slag off the club personal.

Schwi's work is still on going. At present I think he has missed a trick with ticket pricing and charges as the stadium has yet to be sold out. I think already a few fans are voting with their feet. Corporate sales are a joke with only 2 boxes occupied. Where schwi's legacy is going to lie is any ones guess.
And a quick note........ Without the fans there is no club! Without the money men there is no premier league football but still a club.

This, along with the loyalty he showed and the glorious performances he gave us entitles him to a free ticket or 2 at the club he served (and saved many times)
How any saints fan can have a pop at possibly our greatest ever player is beyond me.
It's only his opinion (and he has probably been misquoted) and we are all entitled to that aren't we.

Not with me he isn't.
Not with most of the blokes I talk to in the pub.
Not with most of the blokes who sit near me in the ground.
He appears to be unpopular with people who find fault with everyone and anyone who dares to disagree with them.
Matt was a legend as a player.
I met him several times in town on nights out and he was a bit arrogant at times but I forgave him that because it aint easy being a living legend.
This was not an interview , a conversation reported by somebody who wants a headline and a story.
As for all these people who are executives of multi-national companies on here. Really?
I am a Saints fan and supporter and a STH.
Have been for quite a long time.

Fickle fans seem to remember the fantastic goals from the past...but forget how close we were to having no Club to support.

MLT never earned more than 4k /wk at Saints whilst the like of Haslan Kachoul was on £26,000/wk.

Seriously, people make these accusations and then chicken out of saying anything to back it up, thus rendering their point completely meaningless.
Maybe he meant end of, But to me that basically states he does not have a clue what he is on about and so does not want to be questioned about it, hence "end of(f)".

Now, as a person that manages other staff within the company I work for, I like to think I treat people fair and with a kind manner. To me it is the way I do things, but I would not say that it is either right or wrong, it is just my way of managing. But if employees have got problems with NC and can't cope with the way he does things and with what he demands from within the company he is paid to run, then they should go and find another job.
I personally have always demanded I work hard for my own gains, in my experience it is only ever the lazy people that begrudge earning their wage that ever have serious grievances with their bosses. This just may be the reason some people who have worked with NC do not like him, not on whole with his persona but maybe due to a lack of work ethic from their side maybe. Just my opinion!

Oh well, the LOWER the MUCHER, perhaps.
Oh, and Wiki reminded me that, as well as Little Miss Dotty, there's a Little Miss Giggles. It says:
"Little Miss Giggles can't stop giggling.Once during her daily walk she is unable to giggle; she meets Mr. Happy, and they go to Dr. Makeyouwell. To solve the problem, Mr. Happy gives Little Miss Giggles a 'giggle'."
So, we now know what 'giggle' is a euphemism for, don't we?
Furthermore, I guess if Le God and Le Don met, one would tell the other to giggle off.

The last thing we need is negativity in the ground - it will affect players and results, guaranteed.
Silly Matt, go sit in the corner and think about what you've done.
My betting is that you were not.
It's my belief that one of the major reasons we fell so hard is that fans stopped supporting the team as they should inside the ground, and were too busy complaining and moaning about the chairman.
So, yes, I think I was saying that.
Its my belief that those of us who were moaning and complaining about the chairman was the major reason that facilitated our eventual return to top flight football and the course we are now on.

Did you stand outside the stadium and cheer?
If you support your team, you are IN the ground, cheering them when they are winning, and cheering even louder when they are losing, so giving them encouragement.

I don’t know what Le Tissier is trying to do. He’s clearly using Sky and the Echo as a platform for stirring up ill feeling against Cortese. Perhaps it’s time he shut his mouth and perhaps we’re seeing why he never got the England caps he should have done and why no big clubs bought him.
As for the people who are posting on here talking about Cortese as if they know him they are just idiots. Calling him a horrible, sad, vindictive, control freak and saying things like who’s managing the team anyway Cortese or Adkins just demonstrates what sad ignorant people they are who can only repeat what others say without thinking for themselves.
Whether you agree with MLT or not the question you’ve got to ask yourself is what is he trying to achieve?
He will divide the fans and destabilise the club. There will be the thick morons who will boo Cortese but if Cortese decides he's not staying where he's not appreciated the money will go with him so I hope MLT has a multi billionaire investor willing to take his place and one that has a clear vision for the club to become self sufficiant like Nicola has and not some fly-by-night that will leave us in the same position as Pompey.

However, we was a well paid professional footballer, and I am not in favour of the club wasting money providing perks to previous players, particularly when such players were VERY well paid.
If perks are available I dont blame him for taking advantage of them, but if they are withdrawn, I do not think it is acceptable for him and others to speak out against the club and management in the way that has been happening.
I am glad that the previous management have gone. I am glad that Le Tissier no longer has anything to do with the club if he is going to be rude about it or its management, and I am very happy that Southampton came under the wing of Liebherr and Cortese.
Liebherr and Cortese have been the saviours of the club.
Once Matt Le Tissier was seen as a saviour of the club, but no longer by me, his outbursts seem mean and unprofessional, and I want to hear no more about it from him. A wise man once said, if you havent got anything nice to say, best to say nothing at all.
