Clyne boost for Saints defence

NATHANIEL CLYNE NATHANIEL CLYNE

Saints’ beleaguered defence will receive a much-needed boost for tomorrow’s trip to West Ham, with Nathaniel Clyne likely to come back into the starting line-up.

The right-back, right, missed the club’s last game, a 2-2 draw with Fulham prior to the international break, after suffering a dead leg in the 3-1 defeat at Everton a week previously.

Saints have conceded 20 goals already this season in just seven Premier League games – easily the worst in the top flight – but Clyne has arguably been the brightest spot in defence.

The 21-year-old returned to training this week and the club are hopeful he will play at Upton Park tomorrow, as they bid to earn a first clean sheet of the league campaign.

His return would certainly be a timely one, as Saints must contend with the threat of West Ham’s record signing, £10m winger Matt Jarvis.

The former Wolves man operates mainly down the left-hand side and is likely to be the main source of supply for on-loan Liverpool and England striker Andy Carroll.

Saints manager Nigel Adkins had taken to using Clyne at left-back in recent matches, in place of Danny Fox, who has struggled this season.

But with the danger of Jarvis, and the absence of fellow right-backs Frazer Richardson and Danny Butterfield through injury, it would seem likely for Clyne to start in his natural position.

Maya Yoshida played most of the game against Fulham in that role, after Richardson was forced off with a thigh problem in the early stages.

However, the Japan international struggled there, and is expected to revert back to centre-half alongside Jose Fonte, with Jos Hooiveld on the bench.

Should Clyne slot back in on the right-hand-side, Fox is likely to continue on the left.

Shame they didn't clone Clyne while he was off. It might help with the clean sheets.

Seriously, I agree with swesaint, play 5 at the back with Fox and Clyne as wingbacks.

Clean sheet is a must tomorrow.
Is Cork fit yet? Would be good to see him as our holding midfielder, which would mean sacrificing J Rod.
Use Lallana in the hole behind Lambert.
COYR..... A draw at the very least.

Yup - Jos is brilliant at getting the ball in the back of the net - trouble is we are never sure at which end!

Reminds me of Chis Nicholl scoring all 4 goals in a 2-2 draw for Aston Villa in 1976. The Villa keeper at the time said 'we knew he was going for his hat-trick but we didn't know which end'!

Be a difficult one this! Agree that Jack Cork would be a big boost when he comes back. The team can't afford to switch off at any stage of the game. West Ham will want to get us on the break with the big man getting on the end of it. I'd like to see Mayuka given a go at some point.

We've absolutely battered both Fulham and Arsenal in terms of goals scored by Saints players. When we perfect the small detail of getting the ball in the right net we'll be unplayable.

Good news is going to be a top player , think we have missed cork so hope he is close to fitness, read a few crazy suggestions yesterday about Ramirez injury being deliberate or what are we doing in training ? Most dead legs are caused by knees and accidents happen even in training , nowadays coaches want training to be realistic at match tempo, so injuries unfortunately will occur .
We know that west ham will lump it forward so it's important the full backs get tight on the wingers to stop the supply into the box and with the longer ball from deep we must be alert to the second ball , knockdowns and bits and pieces . Going to need to be strong from set pieces but most of all we can't get involved in a kick and rush game with them, play our own passing game and get our influential players on the ball

If we start with Clyne and Fox as wingbacks, Hooi (the higher the defence the fewer conceded) and Lallana in the hole feeding Rickie we'll win 5-4. Start with Puncheon as well and it'll be a more comfortable 7-5 win. Of course my plan contains more detail, but that's not for here as Spam spies will watching out for my posts.

However, I can spare this coded message to my close pals in the know: "Big Sam would rather see a purple cow than be one and neither a tin of condensed milk nor a mad dog can ride a bike."

My plan is we start with the defence up front and attack at the back. This means Hoi is likely to get 4 goals, 2 of which wll be penalties with more from Jose, Rickie playing at the back as he's been defending with his life all season thus far, stopping Carroll and can come up for corners. Big Sam will be lulled into a false state of security thinking we have no strikers and not realising that our centre backs hit the net more times than an Icelandic fishing boat!!. Result 6-0 to the Mighty Southampton. If whu score a goal we'll sub the goalie and put Adkins on!!
Plan B is for the players to wear matching names on the shirts and just keep subbing them all without the refs noticing (you know, secretly at throw-ins and corners)... this way no one gets tired.

As many will know to their cost...Don't mess with The Warrens.

My worry is with all our influx, we have changed too soon, rather than trusting the old school on the steep learning curve. Too many personnel changes can affect continuity and morale, and clouds judgement for team selection criteria and formula. We seem to be following a worrying PL trend of buying in more hands who get injured and demand more money etc.
Our opponents tomorrow have been doing this for a bit longer than us, which adds extra interest to this fixture. Still, bring it on, time to gel you mighty Saints.

Meanwhile, down the road, looks like the lunatics have taken over the asylum, then?

The Villa result does seem a long time ago but that's because you haven't played them since you got relegated from the Premier League two years ago.

But you should try to be 'optomistic'. I've no idea who you've got tomorrow but I'm willing to bet it's someone terrible. Keep in a dream in your heart and maybe you'll come away with a draw.

"spelt?"
In American English, spelt primarily refers to the hardy wheat grown mostly in Europe, and the verb spell makes spelled in the past tense and as a past participle. In all other main varieties of English, spelt and spelled both work as the past tense and past participle of spell, at least where spell means to form words letter by letter or (with out) to make clear. Outside the U.S., the two forms are interchangeable in these senses, and both are commonly used.

Kind of. Someone's given me a coffee machine. Not only does this instantly make me quite middle class (which is nice) but I've also just had four double espressos. It's like being on cheap speed. It's amazing!
i gotta have one ...... do you have any more friends with spare coffee machines ? ...... could save me a small fortune !
To be honest, I was all "the last thing I need is some pointless appliance taking up space in my kitchen" but three days in it's now my favourite possession. Seriously, get one in your life!

(I haven't slept since Wednesday, obviously, but nothing's perfect.)

Yes, Kent, remember that anyone who "supports" their team is, in Thomasupton/Tebourba

You're right. Anyway, Scarface is on and I feel like I can relate to it just that little bit more now I've got a coffee machine so I'm going to watch it.

(It's also the only good 80s movie which is set in the 80s. True fact.)

I've realised that I was wanting Saints to win not because it's intrinsically a good thing, more because it might just shut up the tediously negative tosspots on here.

Then posts like this remind me that NOTHING in the world will ever make people like you happy. If we won the premier league this season you would be whining about something or other.

So, thanks to you I now just want Saints to win because I love them. Thank you for giving me such a wonderful gift.

Knowing that nothing will ever make you happy has made me happy. What lovely symmetry there is in that...

I think we should start "skunt watch" on here. Ok, it will be relatively easy as we all know who they are, but it could kill some time.

Maybe we should see if The BBC could commission it as a tv series and get Anne Robinson to present? We could have a section called "Skunt Trader" where some bloke (possibly St Retford as he will be full of caffeine and will have loads of energy) to get on a motorbike and hunt down the thieving rogue traders who operate within Portsmouth FC.

Yea, although the ones that think they are really clever forget to swap their log in when commenting on their own posts with multiple user names at times!!! Not mentioning any names (Thomas Upherself, Toboreya, Kent...etc). I love the way he / she has to use multiple identities to validate what he / she says by agreeing with his / her self.

If that makes sense.... I know what I mean anyway!!!

2nd away game of the season tomorrow, really looking forward to it, even though I have to sit with Bill and Slugger. Still, better than going to Farton Park and sitting with Thomas, Theborer and ghk. I like to look on the bright side. 2-1 the Saints.

They were NOT sacked... How many times do we need to explain it.

Anyway, your efforts would be much more appreciated at Fratton, they need it far more to make the fans take over a success!

They were paid volunteers, many of whome it was deemed their services were no longer required. Whilst I feel sorry for the way it was done, it is highly unlikely any of them will lose their homes because of losing a voluntary position at the club! So I don't think you need a collection box.

Not sure if you are aware, but there are people losing full time jobs in the real world at other companies with very little notice if any, so get things into perspective.

Your club needs you Thomas... Go on PST need your donation.

just seen what that animal from leeds did to Chris Kirkland!
oh my god, leeds are known for the behavior of their fans and must be punished heavily for this! a fine just will not do. sheff wed should be fined for failing to keep fans off of the pitch and not protecting the players. however leeds must (as someone said before) be forced to play games behind closed doors and not be able to take fans to away games, i would suggest around 10 games would do the trick.
we dont want cages back at grounds so heavy punishment needs to be enforced. come on F.A. show some balls!

Trying to make a boring pointless post interesting by mentioning others, me included.
You wouldn't see me at fratton when you go there and I'm not the 1 that can't get off there news site. Oh and try and not fight with any saints fans today eh, I don't do that either

No need for a motorbike, simply walk up to the first person you meet, then the second, then third and on an...ad ifnintum.

However Watchdog is so bloody awful...

Bill Oddie is also loathsome but only his "twitching" monotone could do justice to the bizarre violent mating routines this together with cold blooded thieving to build a "nest"antics prevelent in 'Perdiforous Pompolious'....

..the Cuckoo tendancies would also need to be explained to the bemused viewers as would the specie's prediliction for incest and "benefits" gathering..

Can't see Saints' poor defence coping with Hammers very physical style of play and Carroll and Cole, so I reluctantly predict a Hammers' win by two clear goals.
Sadly, from Sunday onwards this will result in cries for NA 's head and excellent manager whose only mistake is working for the wrong Chairman.
Even Le God shares my views on NC, so I'm in good company!

Well done, Teborebore.

In the event we do lose, the cries for NA's head will come only from you and your miserable alter ego, Thomasupton, along with your soulmates ghk, MRSA, Saint2701 etc, etc.
